Just finished my first five-day observation teaching round in a Grade 3/4 class. Had a fantastic time which makes me even more confident in my career choice. Even managed to exceed all expectations on my report. Which is pretty awesome! some highlights
- Taking control of a group of students and playing a awesome game involving fractions called "Fraction Buster" some of the students kept getting distracted by the class pet near us in the room though.
- The female students getting hysterical about the health books claiming it's so INAPPRPORIATE due to having a pretty detailed account on both the birthing and reproduction process.. funniest part is while on yard duty one of the students kept going on about it and then said it's inappropriate because it has the S E X word.
- When I was working with a group of students on a mix of word shuffle and vocabulary building while brainstorming 'or" words one of the students wrote the word "porn' and then cue embarrassment, me crossing out the word, me having a bit of a smirk (shouldn't have done that) then a female student pestering me about what the word meant.. me saying "I won't tell you, you aren't meant to know that word etc".. that same student during library time afterwards even came up to me whispered to me in my ear and ASKED again about what "porn" meant, I managed to maintain a firmer stance that time around, and told her I wouldn't tell her till she was 18.;p (need to think up strategies on how to deal with sensitive issues like this)
- Lots of general stuff - such as gaining a insight in how schools are run and maintained, asking my supervisor teacher questions, attending the teacher meetings, interacting with the kids while on yard duty, building up a portfolio, helping out students with their work and reading etc.
- One of the students saying she wished she had me and the other student-teacher as their full-time teachers.. and the students generally being appreciative of my presence, one of them even hugged me aww! I'd just admit I have no expectations that it's going be ANYTHING like this when I enter full-time teaching haha.
Worst part.
- Trying to do uni work so I don't fall behind.. thank god the short assignment I had due was delayed by a week due to internet issues... and thankfully I'll have a intersemester break that will hopefully give me plenty of time to catch up on my work. The 2/3/4th years should be much better in this regard.
- The awkwardness of being a atheist in a catholic primary school when we got to anything involving religion in the school.;p thankfully my supervisor teacher was understanding when I told her I wasn't catholic, and wasn't able to do the christ sign catholics do as a result.;p
All in all it was a great 5-day experience. Looking forward to the next work placement asap.
