FIRST week sales for the eagerly anticipated Halo 2 title for Xbox appear to have come close to living up to the massive pre-launch hype, with the game shifting an estimated 104,000 units.

The original Halo had sold around 100,000 units on a stand-alone basis, or around 350,000 copies once copies bundled with Xbox consoles were factored in, Xbox product marketing manager Nick Segger said.

The estimate for Halo 2, based on figures from market analyst GfK, gave it the record for the fastest selling game for any platform in Australia, Mr Segger said.

Halo took the record from PlayStation 2 title Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which sold 58,000 copies in its first weekend on sale and will be the platform's standard bearer for Christmas.

...

Microsoft reported sales of its Xbox live online gaming package also increased 10-fold in the week beginning November 8, driven largely by sales of the new Halo.

You know what? Damn.

Halo 2 could have just released in Australia and just about broken even. That's when you know you're playing with power. Nick Segger is doing a good job.

Microsoft have turned Australia into a great market, most shops have a great range of Xbox games with awesome bundle deals!

Im supprised Australia didnt ban GTA:SA.

The problem is for some reason our video games rating system doesn’t go above 15+, a game like GTA is classified as 18+ so they have to take out the ability to pick up hookers to make it 15+.

Have you seen the top sellers at webhallen? Even though it's only one store, I thought this was somewhat surprising...they made a pretty big deal out of the Halo 2 release...and it's not even on their top 10 all formats now. Hell, Look at the Xbox only sales, it's still being beat by Need for Speed Underground 2. What's up with that!?

EDIT: Oh and...next week Half-life 2 will dominate in Sweden, especially since PC games are naturally strong here.

GTA:SA numbers are for the first weekend, not full week.

Can someone explain to me why the original poster is comparing a week of Halo 2 sales to a weekend of GTA sales? Or is that a typo in the news article?

GTA:SA getting owned across the globe by Halo 2.

Probably pissing Rockstar off too. They have to share the spotlight instead of having it all to their own when Vice City came out.

I'm sure they love that exclusivity deal now

probably because the article was written in response to a glowing MS press release.

Because it's selling at a faster pace than GTA:SA. Meaning if they were to just have Week vs Week or first weekend vs first weekend, Halo 2 would have sold more than GTA:VC.
