Automotive Discussion Thread | OT2 | Zero to pointless fighting faster than a GT86

Dat thread title.

God damn.

It's such a car of great contention and heated debate. I find it hilarious. It's the Nintendo Wii of the automotive forum world.

You guys were all discussing Hondas in peace and suddenly a GT86 is posted...and KABLAMO a wrench is thrown into the cease fire. And again, I wasn't even the one to start the flames either.

That GAF porn meme vs GAF gaming discussion meme should be applied to this thread. We can calmly discuss most other cars, but when it comes to the GT86 we're all over the place.

Also, Smokey, I agree with mkenyon...your tired Houston ass needs to learn how to drive a stick shift. Get a cheap BRZ.

Then again, idk if you want to drive an MT for a long commute, unless it's all empty highway.

The vitriol that car gets is obviously a defense mechanism. It's so cheap, that everyone really wants one. So one has to hyper focus on something like low power (which can be fixed and still have you under the price of cars that it would demolish) with such heavy hyperbole that it dissuades the person from actually buying it.

This is now irrefutably the correct advice.

Also, I think his work is close enough to walk to.

Nah, he said he needs to get rid of his 335i because he's about to start a 'new and very long commute'

I drive MT in 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 minutes of traffic...one way. And it's rush hour SF bay area traffic. Bumper to bumper. 3 hours a day *_*

I think it's annoying regardless of transmission type TBH.

the interior is supposed to be nicer, with higher quality materials. was a weak point of the 3 series. the 330i is now a 4-cylinder, the new 340i has the 6-cylinder now.

Will BMW ever stop alternating names? How many times has 28 been replaced by 25 and 30 and vice versa?

Speaking of STi's

Here us a booty shot of mine ready for trackday in the weekend.

Can't wait, never done a track day before!

Sexy butt. Enjoy the track day! Remember, you're there to learn and have fun, not be the fastest around the track. If instructors are available, get one. Try to ride along with them before they ride along with you, so you have a better feel for the track and speed of corners.

Don't drive past your skill level, either. If you start feeling like you're pushing too hard it means you are and you're going to spin in the next lap or so. I've been there, I've done it. So just keep an even keel and you'll have a great time.

Have fun!

Yep.

That's a 3 series

My thought exactly, word for word. Wow.

I had a TJ Sport with 4" lift and 32" tires. I loved that Jeep so much. Wife did too, so later on when I had my WRX, she bought a TJ Sport. Dad loved it too, and bought a CJ.

The thing about Wranglers though, is that you have to accept the fact that you're not using a comfortable device for traveling. It is a fucking Jeep. Highways become iffy, especially if weather sucks.

What do you mean by iffy on the highways?

Are you talking about how they feel like they can topple over easily?

The one I drove felt exactly like that on concrete, but I don't think I'll keep hardcore mudtires on it and just use a set of regular tires.

Haha yeah. They don't know how terrible the highways are in Houston lol.

This is how it looks like right now. And it's going to get worse once rush hour really hits.

As in, once you get over 60-70MPH, you don't feel safe. You know that if you have to react quickly to something, shit is gonna get real. When it's wet, way before then.

The next Camaro has all the aero. All of it.

DETROIT – After 350 hours of wind tunnel testing – often 24 hours a day – the new Camaro will slip more easily through the wind, and drivers of the Camaro SS will experience a marked improvement in reduced aerodynamic lift.

These changes illustrate the lengths the aerodynamics team went to for improved performance, stability, cooling and lower wind noise intrusion

“The importance of aerodynamics increases exponentially as we increase vehicle performance,” said Kirk Bennion, Exterior Design manager. “As engine output increases, we need more engine cooling. As acceleration and top speeds climb, we need to reduce lift for better high-speed stability. However, we cannot make any changes at the expense of increasing drag, which can hurt fuel economy.

“To balance these different aerodynamic targets, we tested literally hundreds of changes on the new Camaro, millimeters at a time.”

For example, the initial design called for the lower grille bars to be set at a 20-degree angle to the horizon. However, after meticulous testing, the team improved engine-cooling airflow by 1 percent by shifting the angle to 13 degrees – a change that achieved the airflow target while maintaining the original grille design.

And rather than a traditional front air dam to reduce aerodynamic lift, the team developed a flush belly pan that stretches from the front grille to the center of the vehicle. Paired with small “spats” forward of the front tires, the smooth underbody helps reduce total lift by 30 percent – while also reducing aerodynamic drag.

Interesting.

Could it be the tires or is it the car itself?
Oh it's definitely the car. It was in my TJ, my wife's TJ, and my Dad's CJ. Mine was the only one modified. Mine felt iffy at 50+, though the larger tires threw off the speedometer anyway.

It's a fucking brick. Not exactly the most aerodynamic thing there is :p

Plus the rather narrow wheelbase with the high center of gravity.....

We made it look like a brick to appeal to fat old guys with leather jackets, but now kids are buying them and actually going fast, which we did not expect.

Wow, that looks... exactly the same as the current one.

Nah, it borrowed some front end dumpiness from the boring-ass 5 series.

Question is how long is this new commute for Smokey? More than 50 miles?

About 47 miles.

Can't wait.

I should note this will only be for about 6 months max. But still it's enough for me to want to take the opportunity to dump my car while it's still under 100k. I'm at 90ish now. Value ain't gonna do nothing but go down even further.

Shiiieeet. 100 miles a day. :|

Well, perhaps the bright side is that you'll have to leave early enough to give yourself a lot of time to get there and avoid the thickest of morning rush hour? And when you leave work by the time you're approaching home, late rush hour should dissipate.

Houston doesn't work like that :( No matter when you leave in the afternoon there is a bottle neck somewhere. Add in a little sprinkle and traffic literally comes to a standstill. It's unbelievable.

Time to move to Michigan. No vehicle inspections. No emission tests. No toll roads. Great weather.

SF Bay Area is the same way. Today I left at FOUR to try and beat traffic and it still took me an hour and a half to do 36 miles.

I did the same in an MR2 Turbo, MT. but for 3 hours each way in the SF bay area

also who said a V6 sounds better than a perfectly balanced flat 6 ?!?!

TBH I have heard some amazing V6's and Inline 6's. I'd say for V6's the C32 (from NSX) and the J32 (Accords, TL's etc) sound absolutely gorgeous, very resonant and harmonic. For Inline 6's, I'd say the S52 takes the cake. It's beefy, mean, growls, and howls. It's so guttural and raw. Porsche's 6's sound pretty wonderful, especially the high-revving ones. I like them as much as BMW's inline 6's but they've got their own character to them for sure.

I hate to say this but the S54 is one of the worst sounding 6-cyls I've ever heard. That tinny, Honda-esque rasp is really offensive.

Interesting, I'll definitely have to give it a test drive on the highways when I finally get one.

It'll be a while 'til I get it, but it's nice to be informed way ahead of time.

This is the reason why I hate Houston... on top of the humidity lol.

But seriously, the two times I've been to H-Town I was stuck in god forsaken traffic and confusing ass highways. Dallas on the other still has god forsaken traffic but the highways are relatively straightforward.

Anyway, let's not turn this into a DFW v HOU topic lol.

From what I've seen, It's going to be the front that's going to look moderately different.
It looks totally like the 2014 facelift to me. Did this comparison a while ago, top one is the new, bottom the current 2014 facelift.

I really liked the 5th gen Camaro when it was new, but with the 6th gen just looking like another facelift it feels dated to me. there are some really close renders of the 6th gen in camaro forums.

Having to go back to the dealership this morning to finalize the order, as the jeep guy had left early yesterday. At least i got an awesome trade in value on the kia soul. I'll be driving the S2000 daily for a couple months watiing for the jeep to arrive. There are seriously maybe only 5 manual jeeps in the state, and they are all overpriced loaded sports trim.

So I went to get my car appraised at a couple of places. Got 12.5k and 12k offers. KBB has 14k down for 08 e93 @ 90k miles in good condition.

Worth it to try and sell privately or nah
