Automotive Discussion Thread | OT2 | Zero to pointless fighting faster than a GT86

Hey guys, I'm thinking about buying a smaller car sometimes next year as I cannot afford to upgrade from my current SUV to a bigger one yet. I was looking around and saw the Subaru BRZ which is relatively cheap for what you get so I was wondering if its a good car, or sports car?

I've never driven a sports car, but I'm used to manual gearbox. I've driven a Civic and Corolla, which are probably the closest thing to this as I've always been an SUV guy. What are its pros and cons?

Thanks for the input.

Best wishes.

Pros: It handles great and is fun to drive.

Cons: it needs more power, specifically torque. People say it's underpowered. YMMV.

Definitely give it a test drive though. The WRX is a smidge more expensive but is a great car too. Other cars in the price range that are good are the GTI and Focus ST, but for me I'm always a bit weary about reliability, so how long you plan on keeping the car is also relevant.

Also, while it may not be the fastest car out there, and certainly not the greatest driver's car, the Civic Si is a cheap option too. I have a 2014 model, they can be had for around 21k new and are fairly well equipped as standard. Keyless entry and start, camera for lane changes and reversing, 205hp, limited slip differential, and an extremely smooth 6 speed manual. For the price it's a nice car IMO. New shapes are coming next year though.

Kipp

but I am taking tiny steps forward
IMS issues are very rare. I wouldn't loose any sleep over an IMS problem in a 987. The oil issue that The Dave spoke of generally would only rear its head in hard track use when the G forces are very high. Overall I believe the 987's are solid cars.

Great! Thanks!

The BR-Z is amazing sports car for the price. Handling and driving dynamics is so good. Yes it is down on power but it's OK because it's sub 28-30k price. I've seen on the track moderately modded BR-Zs that will hang with cars much more costly.

It's a great car.

With my friend who is test driving the all new 2016 maxima. They are nicccee. Looks much more agressive and sporty inside and out. Am impressed.

The SR has package has alcantara package with blue stitching. Really nice for the price point .

Thanks for the input lads, I'll be sure to check it out on a test drive in a few months time and also give the Civic Si a look too.

Another thing I wanted to ask is, are there any good YouTube channels or websites I can visit to get more into the world of Automobiles? While I do tire changes and oil changes myself, anything more I have to visit a service station. I would like to really get into the world of car culture before I choose to invest into a sport cars, as I do intend to do everything including tweaks or minor repairs myself.

Thanks again,

Best wishes.

There was a great show called Wheeler Dealers, not sure if still airs, but basically the premise was two guys would buy an old beat up car, fix it up, then sell it for profit. The repair sections are quite informative.

Ton of videos here: https://www.youtube.com/user/WheelerDealersTV/videos

Find a popular car forum dedicated to a particular model and search for whatever you're interested in tackling. Just a tip -- many forums have awful search functions. You are better off using google with a "site:" domain parameter. So if you end up getting a civic si, you could search: site:8thcivic.com strut replacement

More generally, Eric the car guy has a lot of super helpful stuff that's applicable to a huge swath of older hondas, for example.

If you've never driven an FR car you are in for a treat. Nothing beats rwd cars for drivability, and fun. There are no cons to the 86 twins if you are looking for a fun car to drive. Also I would heavily advise against anything front wheel drive if you are looking to get a sports car.

Even though I know it makes little sense in the UK, I often think about buying an American muscle car, specifically a fourth gen F-Body. I frequently keep an eye out for them on ebay and some specialist car sites.

just throwing it out there, but I test drove the 2016 mazda 6 gt. Everything is ok, except it has no soul. It's the most gutless car I've ever driven. That is all.

The 6 handles great but like all Mazdas could use another 20 horsepower.

If you're willing to go a little smaller, would you consider a WRX?

The car needs more power. Great chassis, but it's being held back. Needs at least 200HP for starters.

Can't afford the insurance, or more worried about the petrol costs?

Actually it's the practicality of driving a left hand drive car here, since the roads are laid out with right hand drive in mind.
Lots of people do it though with left hand drive cars they've imported, you could convert on to right hand drive if you want a 4th gen F body that much. There's also the Mustang GT coming out in the UK in right hand drive later this year if you want of those.

I know this has become a Euro / Porsche thread, but figured I would bring back a little American muscle and some oldies.

This is my daily, so much fun to drive. It is a 2013 Roush Stage 2, looking to upgrade to the Stage 3 in 2016 once the new Sync 3 comes out and a few Mustang enhancements.

This is my very first car I ever had. Drove it in high school and it belonged to my Grandfather. I am the third owner. Its a 1966 Chevy C10, fairly rare build as it is loaded with factory AC in the dash, power steering and a 327 with 202 Fuelie heads.

Right now it is about to go back into restoration from Iron Horse that has done a few spots on Velocity TV.

What? They won't and the aftermarket is HUGE for it...

Good good.

I'm not gonna lie, all weekend I really have been thinking about getting an Evo X next year.

The aftermarket support has given me faith in that I can keep it running until the chassis turns to rust(which is impossible coz Texas lol).

But the major appeal to me, besides the tuning possibilities, is that it's pretty much a unicorn car so to speak. You rarely see Evo's here in DFW, lots of modded Lancer's that want to look like an Evo, but certainly not as fast lol. On the other hand, I am gonna miss that pure RWD experience if I do get an Evo so it's still up in the air.

Besides, lot's of interesting cars are gonna be out by this time next year. The Camaro for example, yes I called it a Genesis Coupe before, but if it can deliver the performance as well as a back window that you can actually see out of, then I might consider it as well. Then if we're gonna start looking into the used market... there's so many options out there, it's basically automotive Christmas haha. So we'll see next year, for now though, I'm just gonna enjoy the pure driving experience my Miata can offer lol.

The Mazda6 is weird tbh. The 2.5L engine feels perfectly fine in the CX-5, but on the 6, it does feel anemic for some odd reason. But it's not as bad as it used to be though. Right when the 6 came out in 2013 or whatever, it still had the 2.0L engine the 3 and new Miata uses. Now that was totally underpowered like hell.

I think it's "soulless" characteristic is YMMV imo. I've driven the 6 with the 6-speed manual and it's fantastic, not Miata great, but fantastic enough that even a loon like me can throw it around corners and have some fun.

Yeah, you'll be fine. I was VERY close to buying one myself before heading to the darkside of the AWD world.

You're right about not seeing many out in the wild (in General). It was a chore to get a test drive for one in my city. And from what I've seen in the Canadian used market, they also hold their value quite well.

Hey Jackson did you change pads and fluid for your track day?

Nah, I'll change in every 3/4 track days for fluid. Brakes maybe 2/3. Depends on how it's holding up.

The Cayman is rather light. When you're racing a a heavy car (3,500lbs and up cars like Mitsu Evo/Mustang GT500/etc.) or a straight up pig like an Audi RS4 that's 4,000lbs you need to worry a lot more about replacing brakes/fluids/tires more often because they take much more abuse due to the sheer physics behind the driving.

They say 1 track miles = 10 road miles typically. More so if the car is heavier.

Bad thing with a Porsche is you can't take your track slicks with you in the car where as in an Evo (for example) you can. I suppose you could try to roof rack them on the Cayman? Lol.

I know this has become a Euro / Porsche thread, but figured I would bring back a little American muscle and some oldies.

Porsche won the Le Mans! Got 1st/2nd with Audi 3rd. Audi has won for 5 years in a row.

It is the year of the Porsche.

Plenty of guys with tire trailers they will tow behind just for swapping to race tires.

However, I'd recommend staying on street tires until the comfort level develops. Race tires are great at masking driver errors until they give, which generally happens at a much higher threshold than street tires. People often confuse this with "race tires snap when they break loose." That is not the case.

But yeah, great job my Porsche in LMP1. However, I was curious as to why the RSR seemed not only noncompetitive but also had severe engine issues.

Guys I saw a BMW E28 in pristine condition on the road today.

I now want one over a E20 3-series.

Has anyone owned one before? I just wanna buy one and make it a nice regal car, no Euro DTM hotrodding.

It really depends on the track, how hot it is out there, how long you're running, and how hard you push the car.

At a minimum, you'll want to bleed the brakes, and depending on your cars mileage, get some fresh brake fluid.

Stock pads should be fine if they are fairly new, and you are a novice running street tires.

I like "Everyday Driver" , "Evo" and occasionally "The Smoking Tire" and "MotorTrend". Also stuff with Chris Harris (although this tends to be exotics/track oriented stuff) and Matt Farah.

"Everyday Driver" in particular is good because it focuses on how good/fun a potential car is for something that you would drive everyday.

My first car was a 68 Mustang that my dad and I restored and eventually put a hot-rodded 351 in. I will always have a soft spot for Mustangs. Your Roush is fantastic.

Nice truck also. Good to see that old guy still getting some love.

The big thing for track days is the fluid you're running. Off the shelf DOT-3 or DOT-4 generally has a pretty low boiling temp. You'll want to get a racing fluid in your lines before a track day, as with regular fluid you'll boil the fluid well before the brake pads are in any danger.

I also think it's good to point out that it's just a track day, and yeah you can make up a lot of time late braking but you're not going to win anything doing it. Better to take it easy in the braking zones but still carry good speed through the corners, your car will appreciate it, it's safer, and if you cook your brakes late braking all the time you'll eventually go for them and find your brake pedal falling to the floor.

Let me tell you, there's nothing like chasing a fast driver into a corner, having him pass another car, finding out that guy's going much slower than you and realizing you have no brakes. I had that happen once chasing an instructor and ended up putting the car into the grass at 80mph. I guess I deserved it for trying to keep up with a former F1 driver.

So yeah, take it easy on the brakes, not worth the risk.

I just know the flattering angles. :D It isn't an attractive car on the outside, mostly because of the trunk lid. The interior's been lovely, though... and that's where I spent 90% of my time.

Back on topic, Porsche. The dealership around the corner lists _three_ Cayman GT4s in their inventory. That can't be right, can it? I mean, I'm sure they're getting the cars, but they have to be long since sold or spoken for and this must just be some automated system that has them listed.

Not at all performance-related, but has anyone driven the Lexus NX (200t)? The missus has been looking at them longingly for a few months. We'd be moving up from a 4g Forester.

Should've used the 7-speed knob instead. I mean the thread does kinda backtrack sometime so we're gonna need that reverse gear lol.

Looks like a girl I used to know that's why.

Lol one of my acquaintances is a carbon copy of another Korean celebrity. First time I met her I almost fanboyed over her, keyword almost haha. Later on, we went to some Korean chain of desserts or whatever and the cashier was starting to fanboy over her, she actually had to say she wasn't the celebrity who he thought she was and it was funny as hell. You could see the utter disappointment over his face, followed by embarrassment and regret for fanboying haha.
