So I went and test drove a 2006 Cayman S back to back with a loaded 2016 MX-5.

Actually really liked both of them a lot, and Mazda is really kicking ass with the interior lately. As for driving, talk about two very different feeling cars though. Other than being two-seater sports cars, wildly different experiences.

The power and sound from the Cayman though, my god.

One thing I learned this past weekend is just how far you can push a car in the wet with summer tires and it only being high 40s.
Instructor kept telling me to push and I never lost grip.
I obviously pushed it harder once the track started to dry up, but regardless, wet performance was very impressive.

Other thing I learned is that stock M3 brake pads are not sufficient for aggressive track driving. This was my first event of the year and rain was expected, so I didn't swap to the Endless track pads I ran last year with no issue.
First few sessions I immediately noticed a very light judder, but still used as much brake as needed.
By the last session I only managed to get 2 or 3 laps in before I got very, very aggressive judder. I put in one last cool down lap and called it quits. Apparently this is caused by uneven pad deposit.

Lesson learned was not to go to a track day without the car prepped every time.

Instructor had a sweet GT4 and like me, didn't want to run it while it rained to avoid having rain get all over the inside.

Did u know its a pain in the ass to have a problem fixed on a Euro car?

I learned this today from some folks on gaf

Breh didn't you know BMW stands for Break My Wallet?

I hate driving as well by the way. Not sure why considering I've only ever driven shitboxes that I treat with contempt.

I'm actually having trouble finding an independant mazda specialist in my area. All kinds of great BMW shops around but no one that works on mazdas for cheap.

The dealer isn't really that expensive being a japanese brand so I guess I will just keep taking it there for service after the warranty runs out.

Speaking for Fords, I went to a local dealer to check out a Focus RS a few days ago. They didn't have it so I took out an ST instead.

I shit you not, not a mile away from the dealership, the car broke down COMPLETELY. Overheating, no power, dead. Had to pull over to the side of the road and wait for another ride. Keep in mind, this was a brand new car with only 8 miles on the odometer.

Never had an experience like that before. Even a beat to shit 13 year old S2000 I drove last year that had issues during the test drive managed to limp back to the dealership. Not a great impression of the brand.

My general impression of fords is that they are awful and unreliable. My old boss had a Ford Edge and the engine suddenly died on him due to a water pump failure. He didn't really have a clue about cars, claimed to hate driving and asked the office on advice on what to do. I took him out to test drive a few things the following weekend and he ended up with a Mercedes c350. He now loves driving and wants to cruise around in it all the time.

I hope the new Ford GT proves to be more reliable...

Fuck pollen.

Fucking washed my car yesterday in the blazing Texas(mid 80's right after winter so yes, it is blazing until I get used to it lol) sun and I park my car at work for an hour, get out to attend a meeting and find my car covered in this yellow-green bullshit.

Ugh.

This uh, doesn't seem really good news to a potential FoST buyer.

Have you test driven the car yet?

Nah.

I've been wanting to but I've been busy with either work or life so I haven't been able to.

Though to be fair, I'm still really undecided because I really can't decide on keeping my Miata or not. It's been my daily the last 4 years and despite a few troubles, it's been an amazing experience so I'd looooove to keep it then also get a new car and have that as my daily so I can start autocross or track days with the Miata. But it might be financially irresponsible for a under 30's dude with school loans and other shit to pay so idk.

Besides, I'm not gonna be in the market until August so it's a few months out.

Coming from a Miata, there is a high chance the steering will be a deal-breaker. Try the FiST too which I hear is better in that department.

Not sure if this is the point of the thread but I picked up a 2010 e350 4Matic on Saturday. I upgraded from...
a 2004 Corolla
, obviously night and day. The car is really awesome I am just concerned about maintenance cost and my gas mileage is really low but I have been driving it like an animal. Very happy with it otherwise.

Any 2016 Miata owners here? I think I've fallen in love with the new RF and going to put in a pre-order when available. But the current soft-top looks awesomely fun as well so not sure which way I'm going yet...I'm a little worried the RF will take away too much from that open air feeling.

So our family is getting bigger and we have to give up our crossover and probably get a minivan, which is fine by me.

I went by to see a Honda Odyssey today since it frequently tops best-of lists. Man, the interior looks like it's from 15 years ago. I know blah blah family vehicle, but that's no reason not to make the dash and "infotainment" system more modern. I was honestly shocked by how dated it looks.

Maybe I'm underestimating how on top of things Mazda is, but the current interior of the Mazda 3 and CX 5 are at least a decade ahead of the Odyssey's.

Anyway, just LiveJournaling my impressions. Otherwise, it drove much better than I expected and turned pretty tightly. Great safety features too.

Any recommendations on people movers?
The Sedona is very nice on the inside. Definitely check it out.

Obviously RWD oversteering isn't gonna be possible, but as long as it feels good and if it's even anywhere close to it, I think I'll be fine. Somebody here mentioned that the FoST does oversteer so I'm hoping that's the case.

Not a 2016 Miata owner, but as somebody who's driven one extensively(I'm also Auto-GAF's self-proclaimed resident Miata fanboy lol), I could probably answer a few questions if you've got some.

Coming from a soft-top NC Miata, if I had to get a ND, I'd definitely get the RF for a number of reasons... but it honestly boils down to the security and the grand touring feel it's probably gonna give. I rarely drop the top on my NC since the Texas sun can literally kill you so I really won't miss it even in targa form(I still want a coupe though, or maybe a shooting brake haha).

The soft-top ND's are perfectly fine and are definitely the better choice if you want a open top sports car instead of a grand tourer. It's probably gonna be a minimum of 100lbs lighter than the RF too so it has it's positives and negatives.

dayam, you can really tell how difficult the ring is from that video. I think I would probably crash within minutes.

Same. I honestly can't memorize the Nordschliefe no matter how much and how long I've been playing the track in GT and Forza.

I think I'll stick to the 'ring taxi's if I'm ever there. Unless of course it's a Miata, then the temptation might be hard to resist haha.

Yeah I think the RF will be better for me as well. While northern California is not Texas, summer days can still easily push 105F so we are talking top-up unless it is morning or evening. Also, keeping out road noise when necessary is a good thing as I spend a significant amount of time on busy freeways. The downside seems to be less open-ness with buttresses partially blocking both over the shoulder left and slightly behind right views. I'm also quite tall so I fit in the soft top with the seat pushed all the way back with maybe 1/2" of headroom. If the RF reduces that at all I'll be in trouble.

RF is remarkably beautiful. Looking at it, it is hard to imagine that is a 30k vehicle (assuming a club trim).

jongkookie already answered but I thought i'd share my thoughts. I have a 01 miata and I always keep my hardtop on. Last November a softball smashed my HT glass so I went awhile using my softtop. This was my first time not using my HT in my 3 years of owning it, and holy shit it was such a blast cruising around with the top down. Probably gonna sound lame, but it was like I was driving a completely different car.

I do think this would be a better question for people who have driven both a convertible and targa corvette or 911.

FWIW, I think the looks of the RF are worth it over the slightly more open air experience that the soft top offers.

For those that enjoyed the previous Nurburgring video, here's some POV helmet cam footage from earlier today of a GT4 Clubsport hauling ass on the Nordschleife.

Warning: Might cause some motion sickness for sensitive viewers.

Great video man. At first I was going to ask what kind of exhaust this guy is running on his GT4 because it was so loud and then I realised it was a track modified car. I need my coffee...

I'm pretty sure that the GT4 race car uses the same exhaust as the road car. It's just the combination of mic he used and lack of sound deadening in the Clubsport that makes it seem so loud.

I mean, I can tell you from first hand experience that the stock exhaust is loud as fuck when you get on it.

Not sure if there was a better suited car thread that is not obsolete, but here goes.

Right i guess im gonna make a long ass post about me and everything car related, hope it wont come off as weird. Just want to share with someone i guess.

Ever since i was young and dad got me a PS 1 in 1996 i have been hooked on cars, Gran Turismo i guess played somewhat of a large role in this.
That, as well as dad being in Off-Road racing and the fact that we have had a automotive repair shop and dealership for 18 years now so i guess this was something that would not escape me anyway.

I have had my license since 2007, (i did my fair share of driving before that anyway. on dirt roads in countryside what seemed like forever) just as i turned 18, the first car i had was a 2003 Mercedes Benz V220 2.2 Diesel,
i just entered University and it was just before the Recession, so money was good, and the car was for me to commute to and back, and to move stuff whenever necessary.

6e97xpgl.jpg

The car was alright for a van, the automatic gearbox was quite good IMO, soon i could downkick the gears when necessary just like driving a manual. And uphill driving was no issue because of it.(have read strange opinions about automatics and uphill driving on GAF)
The acceleration was also quite fine for the cars weight and paltry 110 or so HP it had. But by no means was it a FUN or a FAST car. So In the 6 years that i had it, i turned it in to a fine RAPCAR.

Well here it is, the video is just a joke, and i was bored xD Nothing much to see anyway. But it gas a GAF sunset and all. So watch it ! Minivan/rap car haters ;( 720 or 1080p obiously.

That together with the Rap car thread was a good thread for lighthearted jokes.

Basically if i had to drive a van, i might just as well have some decent audio in it, and that is what i did, had a high end Pioneer for the time BT8000 i think it was, together with Focals front and Back, a Lanzar Vibe 1800 D Class amp and a kicker Solo baric, 10 inch one.
The sound was nice, everything was leveled, the base was not too much, not overpowering.
This car did not need to be sound proofed as there was nothing that rattled, and the interior made for a good hall. And had enough power when the trunk was open to easily have enough sound for a garden party or whatever.

Early 2012 i was in an accident with it.

xQpuOGGl.jpg

After it was fixed with insurance money, half a year more i drove it, and then gave it to my parents as a car to haul cargo for the workshop, as theirs was quite old and rickety already. I off course took out the Focals and the sub with amp, left the head unit in.

That was that for the van, it is still in the service today.

The next car i had was a 2002 Ford Focus MK1 1.8 TDCI with 115 HP

BJLdn4gl.jpg

Could not find a better picture.

I loved the handling for this car, it was soft on bumps, but without monstrous amounts of sway in the corners, and being with more HP and lighter than the last car it was alright.... for a month or so. So i started again, this time i did it by the book.
All 5 doors were sound and vibration proofed, trunk bed and rear sides as well.
A new sealed enclosure was made for the sub. In the front went in the Focals, and the rear got new DLS speakers, with a Alpine 137bti unit. Sound was great, really great. I loved playing Dire straits - Money for nothing, in there, just turn it up and listen in bliss.
The quality was great, everything was leveled again, not too much base, and without any trunk rattle . I did all the work except for the Base enclosure myself. The same goes for the van.

But within half a year i was fed up with it, the only redeeming factor was the music, and that it was nice in the corners. I had no technical issues while i had it for the year or so.

But i needed more, after 8 years of driving Diesels i wanted something more explosive.
So i started to look around. Money was tight. I did not want to get a Subaru or a BMW as they are very popular around here, and i would have been one of the many, and to get a decent one i would have to pay atleast 12 K EUR + ,
as i didnt want to buy a older car than 2007.
So i started to look around in Germany, mobile.de, put in 200 HP at least, year 2007 and up, and started looking, after many Alfas, the first ST showed up. After my pleasant experience with the Chassis on the MK1, a ST MK2 could only be better i thought.
So i started looking around. A decent one started at 8000 ~ EUR up to 10 k. In the end i checked locally and there was one on sale in the whole country at that time.
So i went to the used car dealer selling it.
At first i tested a 530 bmw 3.0 Diesel automatic 2006 i think. The car was slow as balls, had to wait what feels like forever to get it accelerating.
After that i got in to the ST, before driving out of the lot, i was already in love, but once i hit the highway it was a revelation. The acceleration, the burble of the Straight five pot engine, the handling, the BMW seemed like a piece of shit in comparison, but that might be just that BMW, but still, i knew that i was done with diesels at that moment.

A few months passed after that test drive, i finally managed to sell my MK1, and it was time to buy, after a talk with dad, we decided to go for the local ST, it was on sale for 7k EUR for a couple years in the same lot. We talked to the woman owning it, and in the end she gave it up for 5 k EUR as no one will buy such a car here that uses so much petrol and aint a Subaru. I did not buy a new car, because i dont make that much, for it to be feasible, we simply dont take out loans, we save up and buy straight for the most part.

LSQtQKTl.jpg

Ford Focus ST MK2 2.5 L Turbo 2007 225HP

I have had the car for little more than a year now. it has been very reliable and just a joy to drive. Many things have been done with it already.

It has been repainted, the most of it anyway, as lacquer was peeling off everywhere, the last two owners really did not love it much from the outside, although the inside of it was, and still is pristine.

Within the next two weeks i am finishing with the repainting after the winter.

The things that have been done:
Made charging and audio completely wireless, a iottie qi charger coupled with a Kinivo BTC450 adapter. + tasker for auto Bluetooth and play upon phone insertion. The Sony sound system is decent enough, i got Bluetooth audio and voice calls, and the quality is more than adequate. Finally a car that is not boring, and any further audio stuff is in the last place for me.

Rallyflapz mudflaps to safeguard the car from rocks and excess asphalt stains.
A Full Cobrasport exhaust system with sports cat and downpipe.(Cost one third of the car lol, imported from UK) My comparison video is even featured in the Cobrasport homepage.

ST Exhaust sound youtube video

A Pipercross air filter, non oiled one.

I had the original rims, but they were too damaged so i sold them, and acquired newer original ford rims as seen in the pictures.

That is the stuff that is done so far.

In the future a larger inter cooler is planned. A Dreamscience mapping unit, and maybe a Quaife LSD for the gearbox, and if i am unlucky a RS Clutch.

That is it really, i dream of the new RS but that is just that a dream as i wont be able to drop 40 K on a car anytime soon.

More pics, sorry for the long and convoluted post. But i like cars.

Just to add, if you love cars and follow up on them at the time that something happens, and do regular maintenance, then for the most part they are fine. The thread yesterday really soured me. i dont know what people expect from their cars if they just treat them as they do, basically admitting that they dont care about them and then they wonder that they break down. Although not caring about your car is too much of a foreign concept to me anyway.

Guys, is it worth lowering my car 0.60" all around with Eibach springs (from UK only currently)? Concerned with how nice it'll play with my DCC in the long run. Some of the other local R Club guys have VWR springs but the 1" drop is too much for my taste.

How my car sits on stock suspension and aftermarket 18" wheels (sold stock 19"s):

Haha, you guys are killing me. The one I use is "Bring Money Weekly", which I was definitely doing there for awhile.

I don't know that Fords are any better or worse in terms of mechanical reliability that other American brands. I think they are solid, for the most part. What bugs me most about them is their interiors. They are almost all really boring, uninspired places to be in their newer cars. And so much gray plastic, which is my all time least favorite color for a car interior.

I went to the Petersen Auto Museum in LA with some friends a couple of weeks back and realized I never posted any pics.

Truncated your post a little bit for brevity but I really like your ST. Great color and the turbo 5 is a sweet little engine that we never got in the USA. Also, I like the interior in yours miles better than most of the stuff that Ford is putting out these days. Whatever happen to simple shapes and elegant lines?

Thanks, for the price i cant get anything quicker that also has a decent chassis, so i am quite happy. The extras are nice too for a 2007, rain sensor, heated windshield for winter, auto darkening rear view mirror etc.

Thanks mate, yours looks great too, and I love the orange on the ST.

Our roads are terrible here actually, and why dropping it 1" is not an option for me. The 0.60" drop would reduce the wheel gap nicely.

Yeah, I was actually very impressed with the Miata, even after having just tested the Cayman. Really, really different feel between the two, but the Miata was still very enjoyable. Very easy to see how the Miata would be fun because you can drive it harder more of the time compared to something with a lot more power.

I think the thing that struck me the most about the Cayman was how absolutely solid it feels - no impression that things are flexing anywhere, just one solid chunk of metal cruising around. Accelerating just pushes you absolutely straight forward, without any dip or lift or anything. It's the first time I'd driven a mid-engine car, so the way that changes the dynamics was just absolutely novel to me.

Such a good sounding exhaust. Porsche have really been on point with this, the GT3's and their V8 GTS's (panamera/Cayenne) exhausts.

I stopped by McLaren dealership today, because why not. Some of y'all may know, but the customer experience is very important to me when going to these dealerships. I will say that I was pleasantly surprised how nice they were considering the type of cars they sell. I got better service here than multiple Audi dealerships. The cars are beautiful in person to. Dat 650s. They had a 570 there and I did 😂 in my head when they guy said and "for the money you get supercar performance"...this was in reference to the 202k 570 in front of us. But I guess he's looking at it as it's their entry model. Overall though I was surprised . He mentioned they have McLaren track days and I have him my info. You get a chance to take them on the track with professional instructors with you.

Also test drove the M4 for the first time ever.

The difference between my 08 335 and this was ..whew. The torque. The interior. I hit 90 on feeder road with ease and like around 3k RPMs or something. I need it holy Fuk. Wanted to test drive M3 because I need 4 doors, but I mainly wanted to get a feel for the difference in power vs my current car, and I got it in spades.

...and that, kids, was the first time I sucked a dick for crack
Test drove the 2013 M3 today again (I went yesterday by myself). It's at a Nissan dealership, who purchased it from a nearby BMW dealership. Today I took my friend Shoy with me (n0shi), he's downright amazing with BMWs and has built two of his own from the ground up. After I drove the car again, we ran the car for codes, it came back clean. That's good. Unfortunately, everything else about the car was a huge red flag. The original owner of this car was clearly a colossal douche.

-He gutted the OEM exhaust and re-welded it shut. Then painted it black. Flag 1.

-The rear bumper was clearly repainted for some reason. I saw compound in crevices and it made me start inspecting the car more. The paint feel of the new paint was noticeably smoother and newer than that of the original paint, plus with very few swirls. Also, I found traces of orange peel, some light buffer marring, red paint on the exhaust tips, and little bits of clear coat drip. 99.999% of others would not have caught this. But I did. Flag 2.

-The wheels were plastidipped and then the plastidip was peeled off. But it was only peeled off from the front face of these beautiful forged BBS Competition Package wheels. The rest of the barrel was a cluster fuck of huge chunks of peeling dip. Douche flag 3.

-Yesterday I asked them to lift the car so I can inspect the exhaust (before I knew if it was OEM gut or aftermarket). I made my way toward the front of the car and noticed oil. Uhhh, that's not good. Some of it was crusty and dry (clearly been there for a while), some of it was veeery fresh and forming a drip. Huge concern for me. The exhaust I was willing to bend on. The rear bumper...eh, it looked like the OEM bumper was repainted and not replaced - probably for scratches. But what is this leak?

Well that's why I went back there today to ask my boy...I thought oil leak? Maybe a bad oil pan plug? $25 fix. No problem. Nope. It's the DCT's fluid. We're talking about a $20K dual clutch transmission here, leaking. Yeah I'd have warranty for another year. But fuck that shit. I'm out. I'm not dealing with buying a car, only to take it BMW and risk them telling me "oh it's normal, it's insignificant we can't do anything about it. They all do this". And then after warranty ends, it gets worse and worse. Apparently this is a HUUUGE issue with these cars. People have it fixed at dealers, and months later they leak again. Tons of threads. Crazy pictures.

The first image is where I caught my leak (these are not my pics). But it had even formed around the little screw/plug in the center of the picture. When the car has its undercarriage all installed, that little screw is the only thing exposed. And I'm glad I looked at it because I was not aware of this being such a huge issue on these cars. LMK if the below images display.

So yeah, walked away from the car. Went to test drive the F-Type again, and that car just clicks with me. It's what I want. It's the only sports car I care to drive or want to own. Not getting a BMW again.

I hear Chevy makes a better product for half price. ;)

On a serious note, I test drove a 6MT Camaro 2SS a couple of days ago; it truly is a fantastic car for the money. The M4 is absolutely a higher quality product, as it should be, given that it costs $20-30k more.

Yes. I've tried the 12C and 650S. The Macs surprised me; they are surprisingly well put-together given the size of the parent company and compare favorably to even the latest Italian hardware. Unfortunately, the ingress/egress due to the super wide sills is not something I'm willing to live with.

The 12C is an excellent value at current prices. I didn't perceive enough of a difference behind the wheel to justify paying 2x (at the time) for a 650S.

Still, if you have $200k to burn, I recommend that you just buy the best 458 you can find.

Yeah, that sounds like a pass.

Makes you wonder why that Nissan dealer bought it in the first place.

Wholesale buyers from Nissan dealers are idiots, in general. And I knew there had to be a great reason why Field BMW did not want this car on their lot and sold it off instead of CPO'ing the car and keeping it on the lot. Glad I spent as much time as I did poking around the car.

I'm probably in the minority but I much prefer the 570s (design wise) over the 650s. Also do you absolutely need 4 doors? You might wanna try an M2,everyone says it's the better M car.

Yes (newborn)

I also test drove the 4 series Gran Coupe and really liked it. Different experience than the M, but I liked it.

So remember that Nurburgring video I posted about the instructor in an M3 chasing a GT4 and Aventador SV?

Well, I just found that same race from the GT4's perspective. Much higher 1440P quality to boot. You can see he is running the suspension dampers in "Normal" mode, ESP systems on, and has the A/C on full blast just chilling with his shades on like he's out on a Sunday drive. Crazy that he can keep up with the Lambo with almost half the horsepower.

Yessss haha, I wished for this when I saw that M3 video

Edit: just watched it. The SV driver seems really reserved on the corners - maybe he is afraid of spinning out or something? Don't know much about tracking to comment.
But its pull from the GT4 on the straightaways is so fascinating. The car's performance barely compensated for the GT4 drivers skill though haha
