1995 Dodge Neon- Dad bought for $600 for me and my sister to learn to drive.
2011 Toyota Camry- Hand me down from my mom.
2001 Mazda Miata- Got into cars and wanted my first manual, so i ended up with a miata. Gave the camry to my sister so i can get this car.
1975 Celica GT- Project car for me and my dad to fix up.

Don't have any plans for the miata, maybe just lowering it from its stock ride height. Plan on getting a R32 gts-t in a couple of years when the prices go down.

Also a lurker:

2001 Toyota Celica GT-S - Sold
2005 Nissan 350Z - Sold
2006 Nissan Titan - Sold
2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR - Weekend car.
2012 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 2DR - Daily Driver and offroad it once a month.

Been struggling with my desire to trade in the Wrangler for a Raptor, I have controlled myself for the past year. There isn't anywhere in Indiana that I could even take it off road to utilize its true potential. But I still want it.

oooh got pictures of the Celica?

Yay car histories!

'97 Dodge Neon Coupe - Dead
'87 Porsche 924S - Sold
'00 Porsche 911 - Sold for the subie, I moved to downtown Cleveland and it was the worst. Didn't have a place to store it, either.
'99 Subaru Impreza - Salvaged, was a total beater and I could only jerry rig the timing so many times.
'06 Volvo S40 T5 - Sold
'83 Porsche 944 - 944 Spec car WIP, should be running soon but still need to revise the suspension
'82 Porsche 911 - My <3
'13 Nissan Xterra - I love this dumb truck. And yes I call it a truck because I do more truck shit with it than actual truck owners.

I do a lot of consulting work for GM, too, I get no end of shit for the cars I've had.

That Celica is rad, dude, have fun.

Ahh. When I was trading in my 370Z, it was E92 M3 Coupe, C63 AMG Coupe, 550i M-Sport or M56S RWD. I had no preference as to which I wanted, they were all high on my list respectively. But the 550i was quickly tossed aside after I test drove a few, what a pitiful excuse for a BMW 5-series. The E39 would be figuratively rolling in its grave, if it could. 550i base or M-Sport is just a sloppy all around car. Powerful and torquey, with a terrible open-diff that'll sway you a little sideways even on a highway at cruising speed. Brakes were adequate, but it floats like a boat...it's clear that this running on the same platform as the 7-series. The 5-series as we knew it is dead.

I liked the M3 a lot (but I'm biased because I had a 335i Coupe in NYC), but the fuel efficiency was awful - I like to take trips down to Palm Beach or Miami and prefer to do it on one tank, including the way home. And the lack of low-end kept bugging me, but dammit...they're just so fucking gorgeous, especially with the LCI tails. Still, I couldn't even find the right one with the right options:

DCT, Navi, Competition (which was the least important). I found a lot of DCTs with no navi. Or a lot of 6MTs with no navi. The ones with navi had awful interior colors, or were 2013 models that were spec'd out to be $75K. Some were too high mileage and too old. Some had poor paint. Etc. It wasn't worth it, imo. So I ruled out my M3 search.

The C63 AMGs were easier to find the way I wanted, but the Benz dealers were kidding themselves with how much they wanted for these cars used, even though they were low-mileage cars. Loved the car, the power, the handling (especially the coupes), even if the interior wasn't as grand as I liked for it to have been, it was still pleasant. Plus dat noise. Again, too costly, didn't feel like spending too much coin on a car that may potentially not be that reliable.

I got to the M56S last because I couldn't find any. I only got to test drive one M56S, because the rarity was well beyond what I expected. There were a few AWD models scattered about within Florida and Georgie, albeit still rare, but the RWD S-model is the absolute go to car because it comes with a different look, boasts a bunch of mechanical, suspension, and aesthetic enhancements. The one I test drove I didn't even bother with because it was crashed from the rear previously, so I just used it to gauge performance and I was in love. And the interior was just wonderful.

It took me a while, but finally a unicorn M56S Black/Black came up, 2013 with 5K miles on it at a Maserati-Jaguar dealer in Sarasota. It was a unicorn because this one wasn't a regular Sport, it was the extremely rare Sport-Aero (has a different front fascia). I called them up, and over the week we worked out all of the details. They gave me the trade-in I wanted on my 370Z, and took off 4-grand from the M56S. They assured me the car was 100% clean, so I bought it sight unseen (although they did send me 60 hi-res 1080p pics of it from every angle). They delivered the car to my house, and drove my Z away once I approved of their car.

I'm superbly happy with the M, the 5.6L V8 is an animal stock...and I just started tuning it with UpRev and the expectancy is another 30WHP, 35WTQ and a lot more response (nearly 500HP crank). The car is a fucking animal basically...should be running mid-12s after the tune on crappy OEM Bridgestones.

I agree with you on the 5 (and every other non-M in the BMW lineup) - they no longer inspire. The competition has caught up. I had a Kia Optima rental for a week after a week with the F30/32 BMWs; I was surprised by how close the cars were in general feel and quality. While the BMWs were still superior, the gap was much narrower than the badges suggest it should be.

Congrats on the big Infiniti - nice car.

My Automotive history:
91 Nissan Sentra - my first car that was awesome for driving to University and back. I would get scarred taking it to highways because it was so light.
99 Nissan Maxima - second car after my first car's transmission died. It was been a great car and it is almost reach 200K. Hopefully I can get a good job after I graduate to buy a new car as this one is giving a bit trouble with one or two of its pistons or sparkplugs. It doesn't accept off market spark plugs and hence the trouble. :\

How do you folks with RWD cars handle snow? Do you find that throwing on some good snow tired is adequate? I just graduated from college and started my first job, but I have a RWD car and it snows a decent amount here in the winter. I've been browsing potential replacement cars but all the interesting ones are RWD

one passat was wrecked when my mom drove it on christmas eve. that thing was a tank and held up so well. she was t-boned and the windows didn't even break.

second passat had oil sludge and i took it back to the dealer.

i kept buying passats because back then my dad bought my cars and they were pretty cheap with a bit of luxury.

then i got a good job and bought my own car 2 years ago. :D

i'd say RWD with snow tires > AWD with all seasons.

I'll add my very short list.

1991 Chevy Caprice. First car, 305 small-block Chevy, full dual exhaust with glasspacks. Thing was loud. We lived on a dirt road and I drove that Caprice hard. Drifted/power slid it all the time. Ruined many rear tires. Very good car though, never had any problems, still have it.

1979 Trans Am. 403 Oldsmobile engine (yes that is factory), WS7 suspension. My Dad and I started building it when I was 17. My pride and joy. Keeping it forever. Gotta post a picture.

Here's mine:

1992 Subaru Legacy
1986 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham
1996 Saturn SL2
1992 Geo Metro Convertible
1996 Volvo 960 wagon
1976 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight (still have)
2010 Chevy Malibu (still have)
1989 Buick Riviera (still have)

Technically speaking, the only cars I've actually owned are the ones I currently have. The rest were family cars, except for the Caddy, which my dad bought for me shortly after I turned 16.

Can you go get me some clam chowder from Boston?

Driving on a slow curvy road(Bear creek Rd, Los gatos CA) in a GT-R is both fun and uneventful at the same time...too easy but so restricted

Why not!

2003 - Peugeot 206 - my first car! was wrecked 14 days efter, it held pretty well. No damages to me nor my freinds.

Got a second one, which I traded for an old A4 (1996), you won't believe me, but 30 minutes after the trade the Peugeot caught on fire. Boy was I lucky (or was he a terrible driver).

Thanks dude.

I get comments about how giant the M is...and I have point out it's the same width as a 370Z and actually quite a bit shorter than a 5-series. It looks big because of the 20s and the bulbous arches and flares.

Now though, they started making long-wheelbase models of them that are 7-series in length, which is pretty cool.

In NY it was winter tires, or trying to avoid driving for a few days.

But now I live in Florida, so I don't give a fuuuuuh. :p

After daily driving a 350Z in lake effect snow for 3 years, the one thing I learned was don't go for the sporty winter tires, like Dunlop Winter Sports. Stick with the dedicated winter tires like Blizzaks and you won't even notice the RWD, except occasionally on hills.

Buy a beater Impreza for $1500. I had one for a couple of years and it was a hoot in the snow. I also didn't care about salt and rust because it was a POS. I actually made a hole in the side of it by kicking a rusty quarterpanel, I thought it added a touch of panache.

Buy a beater if you can. Yes, Blizzaks are awesome and would make it more capable but its still not the same as driving an AWD or FWD in snow with those tires. I drove my 350z in one winter and I hated it here in southern NY. Plus, your car goes through hell unless its always in a garage or something.

Wish I had enough money to keep two cars around but I don't think that's going to be feasible. I'm genuinely surprised by how effective you guys are saying a good set of winter tires are. How much would a really good set run me? Any specific brands? I saw Blizzaks mentioned here.

Wooo Car history...

94' Toyota Camry
99' Pontiac Sunfire
05' Mazda 3
06' Lexus RX330
99' Nissan Silvia (Weekend Fun)

Winter tires make a huge difference.

They really do! I'm in Canadaland, and I have a set of winter tires for both my daily car, and my wifes car. There's no going back to all season, after buying a set.

Random question:

What does it take to remove a supercharger and how much weight savings can be had by taking it away along with all its other components.

Since the C7Z is going to be heavier, it'd be interesting to see how much weight can be saved this way and what the NA version of the engine will produce.

The chassis, suspension, aero on that car is what I really want. The 650hp is not all that important to me. Maybe they will make a GrandSport model with that just that and 550hp?

The whole motor will be tuned around the supercharger and removing it will be way more trouble than it's "worth". I believe you can spec out a base Corvette with a suspension package that will make it similar to the C7Z's (if not exactly the same).

Why do you want to go this route? Seems...very strange.

I basically want a lighter version of the C7 Z07. The 650hp is not needed for my track duty. I'm a grand sport model will be just that.

Besides if I start doing time trials, it'll just screw me since most local classes are HP/Weight related.

Hey GAF, wondering if you can help me out here.

Last year I bought a 2013 Civic Si and I'm dabbling in maybe trading it in for the 2015 Subaru WRX limited. If I owe on the car, how does that work? Right now I have $5,000 in negative equity so I'm assuming that rolls over into the new car loan should I decide to go for it?

Yes. If you want to borrow $20000 for your new car, you will effectively be borrowing $25000.
