Automotive Discussion Thread | OT2 | Zero to pointless fighting faster than a GT86

I'm enjoying this thing way more than I thought I would.

Nice. Out of all the heavy duty trucks, the ram is my favorite.

Last time I drove one I think it was a 2012 model, and I was surprised at how quiet and comfortable it was. I was cruising at 80mph and felt like I was going 50 or so. Big change from the 90's diesels which are loud and smelly.

So that's what the broken image link was supposed to be... that's awesome!

Although I definitely did enjoy the melons as well. :p

The Motor Trend hosts have been really gelling as a group. I think they're better than the new Top Gear crew, tbh.

I saw this earlier and I really enjoyed it. MT already had good production values but now it seems like the hosts are really settling in. I'm actually starting to considering subscribing to MT on Demand now lol.

Even better is that Larlos Cago is back on MT after a failed stint at Edmunds.

Honestly, MT just need to stick Cammisa, Lieberman and Larlos together in one show... that'd probably be the best informative car show to ever exist and I'd be tuning in every single week.

Yup, the interior is quite amazing, made the GMC and Chevy feel very outdated. Definitely still a beast though. I love that the whole truck shakes somewhat violently during start/stop.

They also introduced real coils last year. They're definitely stiff unloaded, but it generally doesn't have that bounce associated with leafs. It's more one and done rather than a series when you hit a bump.

Damn Instagram links ;)

Now it's time to get this paid off so I can get my (insert Porsche/Subaru obsession in three years). But first, maybe just a few thousand on a good tune, for, the, uh more
450hp/900tq
MPG.

That was such a bullshit conclusion, but I can't blame em. lol

A lot of their thoughts mirrored my own regarding the 4C when I posted impressions here last month.

Oh shit, Lago is back? Does he have any new content yet? Never saw any of his Edmunds stuff.

That truck looks badass in black. Congrats!

I believe Horacio would respectfully disagree.

what kind of car noise do you guys prefer?

Here's the thing. I am actually an equal opportunity car sound kind of guy. One of my first cars was a 68 Mustang with a 351 Windsor and custom exhaust so I have always had a "thing" for the classic V8 sound. To this day, I still really enjoy the exhaust sound of the Coyote V8 and the older Ford 302's.

But then by college I had an Escort GT which had the same 1.8 liter DOHC motor that would eventually find it's way into the NB Miata (Mazda motor) and it was great also. Rev'ving the heck out of that car was the only way to drive it and it had a completely different sound than the V8 cars I was used to.

Superchargers, turbo whoosh, sport bikes, F1 cars, I pretty much appreciate all of them. But if I had to pick just one it would probably still have to be the V8.

I'm enjoying this thing way more than I thought I would.

Yeah man. Great truck! Enjoy it!

Here's the new machine I was talking about last week. Drives like butter on ice.
My last car was a Golf from 2003 so it's a nice upgrade. I still love my golf though :)

Gorgeous! And I knew you were overseas as soon as I saw the Audi interior with a stick shift in it. I am sad that we can no longer choose an Audi with a proper manual gearbox so you will just have to enjoy it enough for the rest of us. Congrats!

Thanks! I'm really happy with it. My GF is dying for me to drive her around in it lol.
It's still not that common here to have an automatic transmission. It has its advantages but I prefer a manual one though.

Nice, congratulations! Supposedly The A5 Sportback is finally making it's way over to the US in the near future, I'll be glad to see more of these around. Enjoy it!

I've yet to watch the later episodes, but the first New Top Gear didn't grab my attention.

Maybe not enough to buy on demand, but I've been loving Motor Trends output for a while now. That Model X vs 4C drag race in the Model X vs Bentayga head 2 head cracks me up every time. Haven't watched it lately, but the first Road Kill episodes kinda reminded me of older Top Gear.

Hey guys, I am having some difficulties parking my new Porsche Cayenne in the garage. Can you watch the video and tell me what I did wrong? Thanks.

Chalk this up to another reason why manual transmissions are still important. If a kid can figure out how to drive a manual and crashes the car, I wouldn't even be mad... I'd be impressed that he actually figured out how to use it.

Anyway, speaking of Porsches:

I'm conflicted y'all... I don't really like the Panamera but this, fnck, this looks good! More here.

I like it. Though I grew to like the old one just fine. Or rather, ignore its ugliness ("but it's got a great personality"). This one's not that different really, but the little things add up I guess.

Oh wow, that is a huge improvement. Good job, Porsche!

So with the Brexit and all that stuff going on... would it be cheaper to import a Japanese car from the UK than Japan?

Maybe the GBP keeps dropping to where we can afford an Aston Martin for $10 bucks and Chipotle?

In all seriousness though... GG Britain. Y'all screwed yourselves over.

I bought a Shark Injector tune through Turner Motorsports on a special they had a couple of weeks back. Finally got it installed last night and I'm very pleased with the much improved throttle response and it makes my car feel lighter @ 4000rpm+. Revmatch on downshifts is worlds easier and much more satisfying. First time I did a 3rd to 2nd gave me the biggest grin. Peak HP gains are supposed to be +14 @ 6400 rpm and torque +11 @4100 rpm on the ZHP. Don't know about that but there is definitely something there that wasn't before and I'm liking it.

Well I finally got my volvo 240 running again. I have it running on a microsquirt. Its still just the tune it calculates, so it needs some work. I would like to take it through emissions today and see if it will pass, but its really hot and I don't want to get heat stroke waiting in my car in line.

it lives

Stinkles

Clothed, sober, cooperative
Test drove an A4 and a C300 4 matic. Both fantastic but the A4 felt bigger. Steering was smooth but lacked feedback on the A4.

Torn.

Tried the new Q50 and it was loud, felt cheaper and is now stuck with a four cylinder two liter, losing the main differentiation it had.

Hey guys, it's not just us!

Apparently everyone on the new Top Gear team hates Chris Evans. Matt LeBlanc has apparently straight up said he will not be returning to the show if BBC doesn't get rid of him.

Reports say Evans is extremely rude and difficult to work with. That was the reason the executive producer, Lisa Clark quit. I hope that this, combined with the falling ratings and fans universally finding him annoying, is enough to boot his ass. Show would be better off without him. They can bring Harris and Reid to the main team next season. Plenty of room without Evans' ego taking up all that space.

Funny. I mean, it's no wonder, but it still feels rare to get 'inside' confirmation like that.

I'd like to see both of them leave actually. Bring in Mat Watson and Rebecca Jackson to join Harris and Reid, and that's my Top Gear dream team right there.

Where do you live? There is a V6 twin-turbo in the Q50. The 2.0T in the Q50 is the same motor as the Mercedes (just detuned), and about $8K cheaper, with more standard equipment compared base-to-base. But for the same cost as the C300 4Matic (42K MSRP), you can get a twin-turbo 300HP Q50 AWD, and again, you get a lot more standard equipment than the extremely overpriced options of the Mercedes, which doesn't even offer standard xenons (forces you to select a $3K package).

Do you notice a increase of traffic lately? even on weekends...

What are your favorite driving roads?

Yeah traffic has consistently been getting worse for the last 3+ years. As for driving roads, I'm in the south bay so there's some back roads in South San Jose that I like close to where I live. Then there's roads in Los Gatos/Saratoga near highway 9 close to where my GF is that are nice. Those roads go all the way up to Redwood Shores practically.

So, drove back home from Portland yesterday taking the much curvier, prettier, longer, but emptier route of Highway 36->26->97.

The views are fucking spectacular. First you go through the Columbia Gorge to Hood River, then head straight up towards Mt. Hood

From Mt. Hood (the town) up until merging onto 26, I see maybe 4 cars. One of those was a White Cayman GT-S that was quickly approaching me from behind. I pull over, give them a thumbs up, they continue on their very happy way.

I make my usual stop in the pass to stretch my legs, and take the dogs for a quick trail run at Frog Lake, and the same Cayman is there as well. Stop and talk with him for a bit. He says, "when I see a big black diesel truck in front of me, I just assume the guy is going to be a dick and not let me pass. Thank you!"

The drive definitely is not as fun as when I've done it in my EX35, or my old man's 535i w/ M-Sport package. But, couple things to take away from driving a 2500 Cummins to Portland and back.

1) Holy crap that engine is ridiculous. It's actually difficult to just maintain a speed, because the engine has two personalities. Pre-Boost, and Boost. The prior one will maintain speed on a flat, but lose speed on an incline. The latter one pushes the truck forward like a freight train, no matter my speed. Fortunately, that made passing easier than I thought.

2) The stiff coils for payload might make the ride a bit bumpy unloaded, but it also makes the truck super predictable and controllable (for a 7400 lb vehicle) in the twisties. I'm not pushing it hard by any means, but it's not body-stiffening-uncertainly like I've felt in my Tundra, or a few of the Silverado 2500/3500s I've driven.

3) 25 MPG, 500-600+ mile range. That feels great, psychologically.

4) The best part about this truck is that when passing lanes appear, people get the fuck out of your way. So many times I get stuck behind some asshole doing 3-4 mph faster than the super slow car/semi that is causing traffic through the pass. They act like since they are in front, they are more than welcome to hold up all those cars behind them. This is no longer an issue.

5) So comfy, it's like driving a living room.

Some automotive pics to finish up my story. Love these design bits.

I'm not one for big trucks but I'd love to just drive one in such an environment. My and my gf will be visiting Colorado for 2 weeks in August and I've rented a mustang convertible. Can't wait to just drive around and enjoy the scenic views. Last time we were in the states we drove down the big sur in CA and absolutely loved every minute of it.
