Automotive Discussion Thread | OT2 | Zero to pointless fighting faster than a GT86

Good grief, I'm kinda glad I don't live where you guys live lol.

I could do so many things with $35 like valet my car at the Rangers game or get an non-synthetic oil change at my Mazda dealer.

I'd probably just take the bus or Uber instead of paying for that mess haha.

I live primarily in Florida now (outside of Orlando), but I still visit my family in NYC often enough that I have to endure its bullshit a few times a year.

I paid $19 for like 8 hours in Brooklyn a few weeks ago.

I'm guessing youre referring to Manhattan only.

Yeah. In Brooklyn, you can often find a normal parking space. I use to go to CUNY City Tech, and I'd park underneath the BQE sometimes.

Hey guys, was wondering if there are any good automotive podcasts that focus on both news and reviews of cars? I've been trying to find one so I can keep up with all the automotive news that comes out but no such luck. :( Any suggestions?
Just noticed nobody responded to me, does anybody have any suggestions?

It looks like one of those whooshy 1980s beautiful airbrush line sketches that would eventually become a horrific ford contour instead of the graceful arc the concept artist started with.
Wasn't the Mondeo rather bulbous in concept owing to the cab forward design being one of the new edge era Fords?

Unless you class these as whooshy late 80s design.

Guys. Why the fuck are diesels not more of a thing here?

The turbo diesel bug has hit me super hard. Drove a friend's lightly tuned 335D. Diesel power is almost intoxicating, it feels so different than gas power. All them torques.

What is the point? The 335D motor sucks compared to an N54/N55. I can easily make way more torque out of an N54 than the 335D can ever make AND a fuckton more horsepower.

What you're really feeling is how turbos come into play, diesel isn't really the X factor here.

Nah, plenty familiar with turbo engines. The torque produced by inline diesel engines is almost silly. Plus the MPG.

And comparing the engines, you're surely not talking about stock components to get those numbers. Because there's no way the N54 is putting out 550 wheel torque with a tune. The M57 does.

I watch YouTube reviews. Redline and a few others

This is actually what I was referring to- the feel and movement of the brushwork rather than the actual rendering

lmao I paid $30 to park in Venice Beach for about 4 hours two weeks ago. My bad though for getting there after 11AM on a Sunday.

So picked up the RS from the detail shop after it had gotten a full satin white wrap with Martini livery. Friend who owns it is out of town so he said I could drive it for the weekend. Score!

Just got back from a 20 mile jaunt in it. It's so brutal and raw.

Another friend with a GT4 dropped by to check it out so we did a little impromptu photoshoot in my driveway.

Beats me why it's taking the US so long to embrace them, although small turbo petrol engines are getting very impressive now, like the 1.4 TSI VW group has.

335d is lovely. My aunt had the coupe version of it, like shit off a shovel even at stock. Lovely big wave of torque to ride. I know very people with a petrol car nowadays/

Just installed a set of federal 595RS-R's all round, the feel on heavy cornering is significantly better, strong sidewalls for the win.
The old Toyo proxes are being relegated to the drifting pile.

Why would you buy the RS-R's when the RS-RR's are out abd much better + same price?

I used to own a 330d and that car was tons of fun. Had to trade it away for an 520d because it wasn't an xDrive and it was a bit too small for our family. A really fun car though. Didn't go for 530d because I didn't feel it was worth the 16k € premium it costs over here.

Because the 595RS-R's are better suited to impromptu drifting on wet debris covered mountain roads, and since they have been replaced by the RS-RR, they're significantly cheaper in Japan.
A full set of RR's will set you back around 80,000y here, where as I can pick up full sets of R's for 47,000, and given how long tires last me (not long) that's a handy difference.

If you're drifting on them, I'm surprised you don't go with the standard 595's. Thats what I run on my s13 most of the time, and they work well for pretty much everything. They're also cheaper, at least here in the US.

Bought them as an in between, something for normal driving but easy enough to throw around corners when desired, I'd normally go with other tyres but they were out of stock, and not seen standard 595's in stock at my local place for quite a while now, though I agree they are about 3000 yen ish cheaper each when you can find them, here, but I actually only paid 35,000 for the full set of R's because the width i use doesnt sell well here (wide tires are generally hard to come by since the majority of cars are kei/wagon/suv and rarely use anything over 225) So all in all I paid a little less than I would if I had just gone with straight 595's

I did used to just buy random part worns from upgarage but it got way too hard to find a matching pair/set lately.

Quick question on car finish maintenance...

So I washed, claybar'd, removed swirls, polished, and sealed / waxed my car today.

What do I need to do to maintain the seal / wax as long as possible? (sans garaging it or putting it under a car cover).

Just the occasional wash for the next few months? or something else?

Rewax and reseal every 1-2 months.

I tend to go with a good, quality wax coating every 4 months, and a full detail once a year in spring.

Any pics or vids???

I'd love to see it man.

No I don't have any unfortunately, this was around 5 years ago when I used to mechanical work on the side. That swap was a ton of work....you can't use the stock frame on that car and it's basically the body on an older cut down corvette frame. It's not a popular swap by any means.

Martini Livery on the RS is quite good. I also like the GT4 in yellow. I think I would be quite satisfied with any of the current lineup of Porsche sports cars in that shade of yellow. Something about it just screams "Look at me I'm fast and gorgeous!"

First time posting in this OT but I seriously need help on this one.

I have a 2000 Hyundai Santamo which is giving me a big problem: car turns off and stalls like crazy while the engine is cold. It takes like 2 or 3 times or turning off and then turning on before the car stops doing that, instead the engine starts vibrating and the RPMs are quite low. Worst is if I push the acceleration pedal the RPMs go even further down and sometimes it turns off. This problem disappears after a while, when the engine gets it average temperature.

Now, we honestly don't have the slightest idea of what is happening. My mechanic changed the spark plugs, we checked the fuel injectors, we cleaned all the sensors, changed the air filter and we still have the same problem. To be honest, this is driving me crazy.

There is a thing though: when we disconnected the MAP sensor, the engine stopped stalling and the RPMs returned to normal plus the acceleration issue disappeared. We changed the MAP sensor but the problem returned as soon as we connected the new one.

Any idea what is happening?

Replace the MAP sensors lead cable that it plugs into. Sounds like it could be faulty? Maybe damaged somehow. I'll think of more ideas. Often these kind of issues are related to air flow.

Was thinking of this one after watching some Youtube videos. Will see if we can do it after I return home.

What kind of car? Is it a BMW?

98 328i.
Not the worst car in the world to do it on.
Have to remove the entire front suspension.

Also trying to sell my EVO 9 has been an exercise in frustration. Its all just kids that clearly don't have the money and just want to go for a joyride.
I'm about to trade it in on something newer for myself to daily drive.

Autoblog podcast used to be good but I haven't listened to it in a long time. Pretty dry, but if you like hearing about some of the internal dealings in the auto industry, Autoline Afterhours is informative. I can only take so much of John McElroy voice inflection though.

Crank position sensor need a clean?

At the track today. First time to see a few different cars.

Saw a Huracan for the first time I believe. Where is the sound of the V10? I almost feel like the guy was running with valves closed so not to go over the db limit.

GT350 and GT350R. The R owner didn't even run it til the last session. Rest of the time he just rev'd it in the lot to attract attention.
The GT350 was embarrassed sound wise by the Rousch he was running with. Not at all impressed by the GT350 look-wise or by its exhaust. Could have been the fact that it was gray though.
The R definitely stands out as something special where as the GT350 can easily get mixed in with other Mustang GTs.

Regarding the BMW, that's what I thought. It was the same deal on my 128i when I had the oil pan gasket replaced. I used a local BMW specialist and it was pricey because of the labor involved.

...

Your engine is running too lean at start so it's not getting any additional fuel for cold starts. Without the MAP sensor it's probably going into a sort of open control mode where it's not leaning out so much. Beyond that I'm not familiar with the car's controls so I can't guess beyond that.

I wouldn't think it has something to do with the crank sensor, that would fail in a different sort of way.

Edit: If the engine is still hot will it also stall out when you try to start?
