Automotive Discussion Thread | OT2 | Zero to pointless fighting faster than a GT86

Nice, OnkelC, congrats!

Three and a half years! I don't feel too bad about it, though, because yeah the value has gone up and I'm a perfectionist so it feels really good to have the car running right.

At the rate those cars have gone in that exact period of time, I figure you're still well ahead ;).

Was it really 2300 euros for doing the IMS? I thought it was way cheaper than that. Did you have somebody do the work?

Yeah, something like that, maybe 2200. But everything is more expensive here in the Netherlands. And yes, I absolutely had someone do the work :D. Fitting that LN bearing requires a special tool and I'm sure that properly aligning everything, while doable maybe, is probably not as sure a thing as you'd like. Also, I don't have the room to have the transmission out for a few days, that's the biggest problem I guess. + Now I have a nice little LN sticker in my service booklet with a stamp from a reputable Porsche specialist. That'll do nicely when I sell it, if I ever sell it, to move up to a 911. Again, not likely with the way those things are appreciating.

It's only worth more when I sell it, and who knows when or if that'll ever happen.

Ooh fancy. Well good on you for getting it done and granting long life to another poor little M96 motor. :)

I need to buy new ties for my CR-V. I have never bought tires before and there are like 1,000 options. I have no idea what to choose. How do I determine what I need and what brands are good?

Its AWD, 30k miles on it. The front ones aren't too terrible but the backs are very worn and need to be replaced ASAP.

I'm probably buying them from Pep Boys - its nearby, they have a lot in stock, and they have what seem to be good offers right now.

I live in the NE so we get snow/ice throughout the winter.

Brands they have are:

Falken
Travelstar
Definity
Maxxis
Hankook
General
Cooper
Goodyear
Continental
Pirelli
BF Goodrich
Michelin

I was just updating the maintenance history for my 911 and it got me thinking, does anybody else have detailed lists of all of their repairs? I have copies of all of my receipts, but I've also listed all the repairs and parts I've purchased on an excel spreadsheet--the total of which I've labeled "THE SHAME OF IT ALL".

So if you're curious about the maintenance cost of a 30+ year old Porsche that gets about 3-5k miles per year, the answer is "more than I thought".

Real answer:
$16,827.39, but that includes a not quite necessary partial transmission rebuild with engine drop and $3,300 in fancy exhaust. I'm also a bit of a perfectionist so if all I had wanted was a running car it would have been a little over $2,500.

I have to find better things to spend money on.

But how much do you love that car? Hard to put a price on that and you are helping to preserve an undoubtedly classic car.

I also keep very detailed receipts and maintenance records in a Google doc

I've had my E46 ZHP for 4 years and 2 months now and put 33.5K miles on it.

Parts, repairs, maintenance, paint work non insurance: $5182.26
Insurance repair and work: $8125.94 - including "new" motor and clutch. Thanks insurance!
Mods: $1326.73

I've probably bought around $700-800 in tools and equipment to work on it, most of which work on other cars.

It really adds up over time but nothing like the previous owner:

PO took it to a dealer for work and spent $6800 over 2.5 years and 12K miles.

Yay, I'm back in Southern California! It was negative 19 degrees with windchill when I left Chicago so definitely glad to GTFO of there.

Some bad news though. The Sharkwerks GT4 is back in their NorCal headquarters for further testing and development so doesn't look like I'll get a chance to drive it unless I make my way up there.

I'll still try to find some interesting automotive stuff to check out here though. Been a while since I did some canyon carving. :)

I started keeping a spreadsheet when I started to do more of my own maintenance on my cars a few years back. Makes it easy to track when fluids have to be changed and what not. And it does make you far more aware that you're spending too much on mods :p

some of you may (probably not) remember that my evo has thrown a p2096 code since getting tuned (with high flow cat, exhaust, upper intercooler piping, high flow air filter drop in, and boost controller). Code P2096 means post catalyst system fuel trim too lean on bank 1. from what i've researched, this is a tricky code with evo's and is often a result of a boost leak or bad o2 sensor. just prior to the cel triggering i'd notice my AFR drop a bit and begin to fluctuate more wildly. after disconnecting the battery i'd be good to go for about 2 weeks before it would happen again.

now that its winter though, its been an unheard of 6 weeks or so with no cel and a rock solid AFR. which got me thinking that the air temperature and more specifically air density may be playing a role in my issue.

could p2096 be triggering throughout most of the year because i'm at 4500' and the air is significantly thinner than where i was tuned (sea level)?

I'm no expert, but I would think that with less dense air would result in a richer air:fuel mixture if your car doesn't properly adjust. Lower temps would give you more dense air and do the opposite.

just ordered a Fiesta ST, delivery scheduled mid-march 2017 :)

Congrats! Are you planning to keep it stock or mod it?

Go to the Tire Rack website and enter in your car. That'll get you a list of tires for your CRV and you'll be able to see reviews and ratings for the tires. Go with the more highly rated/reviewed ones for your price range.

I swear they get their ass kicked out on the road to and from work everyday. If you can't cut it, hire someone who can. Don't wish everyone off the road.

Fuck that makes me mad. I said my piece in the thread.

GAF is in a bubble though... ever since after the election I've learned to never trust the OT for serious matters.

It's all doom and gloom this and darkest timeline that. The current negativity going on there is mind-numbingly painful, I'd rather watch paint dry than read those threads or thread titles. It's like we're all going to die come January.... smh.

OT GAF is a fucking see-saw
"Self driving cars are great"
"Actually cars shouldnt drive themselves"
"Cant wait until I dont need to drive"
"Muh freedom"

Bottom point is, we are still years away from a fully autonomous future, as these systems wont be retrofitted to older cars and everybody cant splash out 100k just to get a new self driving car. In itself getting through traffic jams while reading a book or watching videos on youtube seems great. But I doubt human drivers will be banned anytime soon.

Anyone got an Xdrive 3-series (or other BMW)? Does it actually do much good?

My finance deal on my current 3-series runs out in the not too distant future so I'll be looking to get another and was wondering if Xdrive was actually worth it. I've surprisingly never felt like I would lose much traction in my current RWD, so I assume it'll only be useful on the couple of days a year it happens to snow (UK), which doesn't seem worth the extra cost to me.

Everyone's got they own opinion on it. My 2 cents is that 4wd systems are good for when the surface is loose or slick. Or sometimes when a car has a lot of power in comparison to it's tire size. Outside of these conditions, the benefit is marginal, imo.

The nice thing tho, is that permanent 4wd systems like the xdrive or subaru all wheel drive are for the most part non-intrusive once you have them. Two more axles and a diff or two depending but those are not high maintenance parts.

There are differences in handling but I would say that is subjective and a test drive would tell you more there. Some people will be more partial the the rwd feel and some to the 4wd feel.

I've tried an Xdrive before and I couldn't really tell the difference. It was a wet day and didn't feel like I had any more confidence in the corners and under acceleration. BMW have done a really good job on the grip in RWD, I just know they're a non-starter in thick snow.

I like the idea of permanent 4x4, but it's nearly £2000 more and it'll probably cost me half that again over the 3 years in tyres and fuel.

I would say if you only get a few days of snow you can skip the xdrive for sure. Bmw's chassis are usually so good in the standard rwd that the xdrive option becomes strictly a snow thing.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. That money could go towards a really nice add-on pack. M Sport Plus has my eye.

For £2K I would say no, but it depends on what part of the country you're in come winter. Most of us have fairly mild ones and nothing a solid set of winter tyres can't handle.

Although the xDrive models are desireable and will hold it's value well from having looked at used ones before.

I always get on PCP so resale is obviously important. However, I've never found adding something that in theory should improve residuals do anything other than significantly bump up the PCM cost.

I'm in the south midlands, so if we have a couple of days of snow I'd be surprised.

AUDI/APPLE UPDATE YOUR GODDAMNED FIRMWARE/APPLE UPDATE YOUR GODDAMNED CARPLAY!

I have these niggling issues with MMI//Carplay when using USB (ostensibly FAR superiror to Bluetooth which MUCH more functionality)

1. Can't program radio buttons since Sirius trial ended (Audi)
2. Carplay connection can just stop if you perform connection in wrong sequence (Carplay/Audi)
3. Carplay can stop working until you do a full restart of the MMI - and an engine cycle isn't enough. Needs two minutes or so. (Carplay/Audi)
4. Some Apple Carplay apps just stop working, like Pandora, iheartradio and so on - intemrinable "loading" (Apple Carplay for sure)
5. Activating Audi nav instead of Apple nav may boot Carplay functionality for driving session (Audi - maybe Carplay)

Most of my issues are conflicts between Audi MMS and Carplay - some of them are straight Carplay bugs and other drivers experience them in different brands.

But here's the most bonkers thing about it - I have two SD card slots and a DVD drive. I can use either to update maps - but to do it via SD card, I have to download, install and use a freaking. Java client with what I'd call intermerdiate level of knowledge. Which translates to ADVANCED PROGRAMMING DEGREE for the avergae person. BTW, this is infinitely harder if you use a Mac by the way. And THAT is the manual/consumer facing solution.

I LOVE the OS, even some of its quirks, but this iteration has been in the wold for about 8 months without a single update - and the forums are full of folks raging about it, but raging about subtly different flavors of similar bugs.

ironically the Audi support is much more honest than Apple's which has always felt like a big silent wall to me, compounded by real users jumping in to defend apple and saying, "You're doing it wrong!" Rather than helping.

Also, scrolling the nav wheel UP should zoom out, not in. Is this a Euro/german thing?

I don't care if it's a car, a motorcycle, a camera, or a dishwasher: Germany sucks at interfaces.

Basically.

And yes, the reversed function of the MMI wheel is intentional. LOL. Bothered me from my first Audi to my last.

I drove a VW Up with the weird integrated, but standalone infotainment. It had an on/off switch like a GPS unit which was nice because a couple of times it flat out crashed :p

Is there any car with a good system? Even Tesla'a looks laggy compared to a modern tablet.

I've heard UConnect is good, but have limited experience with it. But yeah, in general these things are going to lag behind tablet technology for several reasons (longer development cycles, tougher environment requirements, etc.).

edit: Hey, here's a Consumer Reports ranking http://www.consumerreports.org/cars-infotainment-system-brand-by-brand-guide/

UConnect at the top, and...CUE at the bottom, well below GM's own MyLink/Intellilink.

I've always quite liked Audi's MMI and BMW's iDrive. Logically laid out and quick to use. Never really liked COMAND though from Merc.

1000% agree.

Hell any car forcing you to use a touch screen or touch sensitive controls(*cough* Cadillac *cough*) is doing it wrong. There's a reason why the tune and volume dials are gigantic physical round knobs(so your ass isn't looking at the thing to fiddle with it), now putting them through some shitty interface makes more distracted drivers, and that's what those car averse people should be scared about.

I agree, the Donald Trump threads are annoying as fuck, at this point. I dislike the man tremendously, but this forum is fucking littered with the same shit everyday and the same half-assed one word posts.

GAF's demographic is largely very left, borderline socialists, imo. It was a much more diverse forum when it was only about 10K members, many many years back. Also, don't forget how quickly the entire forum bagged on Evo X and assumed he was a rich braggart when posting the Tesla thread. The jealousy was through the roof and permeated in the entire thread, some disdain was basically out in the open, other was passive-aggressive. It felt (to me, at least) like a poor vs. rich divisiveness. It was extremely awkward.

The far left scares me as much as the far right does, to be honest. I dislike both factions of each party equally. But uhhh, let's not turn this into a political thread.

Nah, as weird as these problems are, they pale in comparison to prior car issues - and are accomodated by the rest of the Car's good things. This is my second Audi. I mean, you're driving an S4 and everyone I know with an S or an RS (and I just realized that's an astonishing number of people) has issues - because an S and especially an RS is a 20 gallon car in a 10 gallon pot.

Actually one friend has an S3 and hasn't had any issues at all.

I've used CUE a bunch because of rentals and it's not great, but I'd caution that Consumer Reports age demographic x Cadillac's demographic x response ratios x technology is probably a pretty bad combo - old people have been skewing their results in weird ways for decades - "The radio buttons are too small!" - "The dials are fiddly!" Yeah about those bubbles though... thinking this particular sub forum is pretty fucking loaded by most standards.

And (this coming from a pretty huge petrolhead) Trump's and his cabinet's policies on climate change (and many, many other important issues) do not exactly inspire a whole lot of confidence. I think the negativity is understandable.

Socialism, in some form or other that is updated for the 21st century (or something that at the minimum is not unfettered capitalism), is probably the only sustainable solution going forward. Also, calls for equality and sustainability, both environmentally and socially, hardline or not, should probably scare you less than the fascist-lite tendencies you've seen from the right lately.

Oh for sure. And I think they've more or less fixed the sluggishness problem at this point. I don't have a problem with it in my 2016 ATS, at least. I've mostly gotten used to the interface, but I do wonder what the base radio is like to use:
and kind of wish they'd found a place for those knobs for CUE.

My main problem isn't even the interface - it's that after driving probably thirty caddillacs, I still can't remember if the silver "buttons" are the buttons, or if the glossy surface is touch sensitive. And the haptic feedback doesn't help. Still can't remember, even looking right at it.

Doubt it's an issue for an owner, but a Stinkles specific rental problem.

For a track toy? Definitely. For a daily driver to occasionally hoon? Not for me. Even my Miata, as small and impractical as it can sometimes be, has to be able to go to the grocery store, out to eat and back and forth to work. No squeaking for me, thank you very much.

Are we talking about far-left being equal to alt right? Because Alt Right to me are basically nazis. So when I say far left, I don't include Alt Right, just to clear that up. But having said some of that. My ideas are pretty much right down the middle. I don't really lean towards one or the other.

I think the right's stances on immigration I can agree on, regarding border patrol and making the process more difficult and comprehensive, overall. I also prefer the lower taxes (capital gains, especially) of the right. I do not agree that raising the taxes of the rich and upper middle class is the right thing to do. I see it as a redistribution of wealth. I would much rather focus on improving the quality of life for the lower class in ways that don't force tax increases.

In fact, I'd look into probably removing income tax for any families making less than 25K a year, or 10K per individual. But only for a maximum of 5 years, in an effort to help lower income families to climb job ladders and out of poverty. A time based system like that would hopefully avoid exploitation. And furthermore, yes, I would drug test. Saving money on taxes should not give people the right to spend on drugs, though recreational marijuana usage may be an exception depending on the quantity.

Likewise, during that 5 years, social security would be suspended for the individuals, so their work and time worked would not be counted towards their retirement. That's all just a philosophy of mine, though. I like to think of all sorts of ideas, some flawed, some not as much. I majored in politics and law in college, so I just ponder stuff.

On the left, I strong agree on heavily restructuring the rights of the 2nd amendment. I'm okay with selling certain kinds of weapons, but the process for doing so needs to be on the federal level with a one-size-fits-all policy that covers the entire country, and dramatically changes the approval process for permits. I think each state determining their own gun laws is absurd.

On the left again, I agree that women should not be punished for circumstantial abortions. An unborn with no quality of life that could hurt the mother during birth should not have to suffer or be prioritized over the well being of the parent. A termination in that event should be legalized. Likewise, a pregnancy due to rape and incest should be allowed termination, if desired. A woman's choice is very important.

And on the left, 3 month partial-pay maternity leave should be the bare minimum for every job with 15 or more employees (with the final month being unpaid or allowed to work from home). And for smaller companies, 1 month paid, 2 month unpaid, with job retention.

Climate change, absolute necessity and requires the co-operation of corporations to lower their emissions, whether its industrial or automotive, etc.

Imports. Trump is a dipshit for calling out Asian imports from Japan and Korea. China, I'm a little iffy on sometimes, because I do think they use leverage against the US, often. Nonetheless, it's stupid to call this a bad thing. Manufacturers from Sony to Toyota are selling tons and tons of goods in the US. That means more tax money collected for our country. Not their, but ours. This is simply helping the domestic economy. And foreign car manufacturers are actually building cars in the US, such as Nissan and their enormous plant in TN. So aggravating them is a dumb idea, when in fact American makes such as Chrysler are building cars in Canada just a few miles out from Detroit.

Anyways, I've rambled on. I really didn't want to make it about politics. LOL. Hopefully didn't say anything that ruffled feathers.

Couple of things. Much of your post is reasonable and subjective. However. A normal family with a household income of $25k, two kids - basically doesn't pay any income tax anyway, as long as they have a "normal" life.

Taxing the very rich actually helps the very rich too, as in the US and normal world economies, tends to create more consumers for the stuff they make, build, sell or distribute (typically).

Taxes on the wealthy are already at historical lows - and taxing capital gains is also a net benefit to the economy, and that includes everyone except the retired, to a certain extent.

Now strict immigration is necessasry for all sorts of reasons, but many macro economies in the US (agriculture, housekeeping, hotels, restuarants) and so on would collapse overnight if we deported "mexican" immigrants. It would be an economic disaster. It's also conflated (politically) with terrorism as far as Mexico is concern, which is obviously nonsense.

I think we can find something more important to talk about than the fate of humanity.

How about urethane bushings? Are they worth the squeaking? Discuss.
I freaking hate squeeky bushings.
Had a TRD away bar upgrade back in the day that came with urethane bushings and a small pack of grease and no matter how well you greased them up within 50 miles they were squeeking like a wooden floor outside your girlfriend's parents room as you sneak past in the night on your first sleep over from the guest room...

The firmness is great, the resistance to ovalling too, the noise.. not so good.

Yeah, it's the black surface, and since most of them control the climate control, owners rarely have to mess with them once they have things how they like. I think I mostly only ever hit the home button (which should swap spaces with the power button because how often is anyone going to turn CUE off vs go back to the home screen?). I use the steering wheel volume buttons instead of that stupid slider thing.

Probably the easiest way to remember that it's the surface is if the car has optional features like heated and ventilated seats, those don't have the silver bits there.

With the CT6, it looks like they've done away with the silver bits, and added physical switches for changing temperature and fan speed.
I guess that's an improvement.
