Here's another review of the Cayman GTS from a normal person, not some giant publication. Pretty good production values!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79fgFlzF5po

It also unanimously won best driver's car from Drive's Australian division. Love the quote from the last few seconds. He mentions the different tiers they use when ranking cars and says "there's adequate, there's competent, there's brilliant, and THEN there's the Cayman GTS."

The GT4 is going to be godly. :D

It'll be a great track car. But I think it'll be a horrible DD. The GTS is freaking stiff and loud as is.

...So umm...the M235i may be out of the equation right now per the news I got yesterday. I'll know more on Monday.

What does a Cayman's depreciation curve look like. Only way I can afford one of these is if the curve is steep.

Older Caymans (987/987.2) are cheap. They've depreciated rather quickly. You can get one less than 10 years old with decent mileage for like $20k-$25k

But limited trim lines like the Cayman R have held their value well. GTS is limited too. Most U.S. dealers got 1, maybe 2... Some got 0. There's like maybe ~50 new ones for sale in the U.S. right now. The GT4 should be even more limited.

But you could pick up a used 981 base model or S easily and rather cheaply. The GTS might become even more rare if Porsche go with turbos for their 981.2 mid-life refresh which is supposed to start with the GT4.

Not issues or news with the car. Hahaha.

News that affects me purchasing the car.

Jaguar offering you free escorts etc if you ride it out and get the XE? Lol

I'd love to see an XE-R with the supercharged V8 from the F Type R... that'd be an insanely fun sedan.

???

edit:

So yeah the P85D is faaaaaaast. It does sort of have that luxury barge feeling though. Not a sports car. I feel like I'd rather buy a cayman GTS (or 911) in that price range. Which is kinda out of my price range lol. Makes the M235 seem like a bargain!

IDK I might start seriously looking at used caymans... but my sister already has one* that I can drive whenever I want.

*sadly its the 250hp base engine with an auto =/

That is very good to know, thanks. So looking at those historical numbers, finding a GTS for ~45k at the 3 year point will be difficult. But an Cayman S will fall along the more standard depreciation.

Looking to buy a decent all weather suv and get rid of my rwd sled I drive now. Friend recommended the RAV4. Reviews were mixed. Anyone have first hand experience with these? Are they good?

CliffyB is convinced they get in front of him on purpose to go slow. However, if you're in the market for a RAV 4 what you ACTUALLY need is a Mazda CX 5. It is known.

Bahahaha this thread just got funny... congrats Alpha? lol

Oh btw, does anybody have any experience with the Jeep Wranglers of yore? Like the the YJ and the TJ's?

I've somehow developed a fondness of them recently, I'm probably gonna start looking once summer rolls around, that way I can just garage my Miata whenever the winter hits this year.

I drove a Caravan for like 4 days (I mentioned it many pages back) when my cousins were visiting from out of town and they got one as a rental (they had two kids with them).

And my God, what an excruciating experience. I made a joke about a minivan and my wife said "she'd rather walk the 20 miles to work". She's actually saying it's okay to have one sports car and one sedan. So we'll see. But I don't know how I feel about having a child in a smaller car.

....I sound like a girl, I know. I'm freaking out, if I have to be honest. I won't know 100% until Monday, but the pregnancy test was positive almost instantly. It says wait 3 minutes. But within 15 seconds...bam, positive.

I can't wait, but I'm also scared as all hell. We've only told our parents thus far.

Cayman (just the base model, since you know, Australian Auto Tax and all) is what l'll be looking to replace my current car with before the end of the year.

Eh, SUVs being "safer" just seems psychological to me. Just the ride height puts me off.
I would be more comfortable driving a wagon if I needed the extra space. Maybe the XF Sportbrake?

AutoGAF baby shower for Alpha!!

Good advice. CX-5's are solid SUVs with some pretty good gas mileage.
The direct inject turbo models had issues with oil seals blowing out back in ~2010-2011 though, so watch out for that.

Yes. are total shit in a way that only a vehicle assigned to the lowest bidder and then actually DOWNGRADED for public use over a series of terrible decades could be. Imagine a VW Beetle that got outsourced to Yugo in the sixties and you have an idea of the fit, finish and features. However, as unreliable and poor as they are, they are capable offroaders and 90% of problems can be fixed with a mallet, a rubber gasket and a quart of cooking oil. And they look cool.

If only we got those in the US. The sedan should work fine, those are mid-size, right? A coworker has a Fusion and it seems like the baby seat fits without impeding much on the front seat.

Don't worry about it, man. It's one of the greatest experiences in your life. :) My son loves my M5 and the Evo... I expect he'll love every other car I take him in too.

You're in for a real treat. Make sure to get a Recaro baby seat!!!

Y'all are jumping to conclusions.

Alpha, it might be twins. Time to upgrade.

Nah, he needs a Toyota Previa. IIRC, there was an model that had a supercharger from the MR2. If it doesn't exist, just grab a 3S-GTE and do an engine swap... instant Previa all-trac!

Hahaha damn. That's why they're hella cheap on Craigslist... so many TJ's are under $8k right now and they look pretty good from the pics. There's even a YJ just a mile away from me for $2k... listing says all it needed was an oil change, tranny oil change, and to "recharge" the AC. I drove by it today and it looked pretty good considering that it's more than 20 years old.

Oh well, I didn't really need an offroader. What I really want is a cheap beater car that I can take out when the weather has gone to shit but also something really quirky.

Ya. That's why I want a 997.1/2 911 Turbo... I can drive in any weather, get an easy 600 whp/700 wtq, get a 6 speed, get dat Porsche reliability, and put my kid in the back seat for trips to San Francisco?

Fuck yeah. Get a 911, Pregosnake.

Didn't mention any SUVs. Loading a baby and a baby seat into a small coupe is a royal pain in the ass. I might end up getting another sport sedan, but we'll see.

Well, I was gonna come back to this thread to recommend a Range Rover as a family car, but I see Jackson already has that covered.

Last page I already mentioned getting a Range Rover Sport once the Jaguar lease is over. ;)

I'm ahead of you guys.

I do believe Road and Track have also preferred the ATS over the 3-series. Car and Driver may have too. All critics have agreed that the ATS is a much better handling car too.

The one I've seen from R&T is

http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/road-tests/reviews/a5213/the-comparison-65-3-roa1013/

which has the 335i over the ATS V6. Granted, the ATS did score a little better on lateral grip. I think it has a stiffer chassis though it could also be down to the suspension tuning, the F30's sport suspension is definitely softer than the e90s.

http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/2012-bmw-328i-vs-2013-cadillac-ats-comparison-test

C&D also preferred the 328i though they did say the ATS chassis was sharper. ATS seems to really lag behind in it's powertrains. Should be fun when the refreshed 3 goes against the XE. Supposedly they're retuning the steering and suspension.

Every time I'm in my buddy's 997 carrera I chuckle when I look back at the rear seats. I'd love to hear how alpha justifies a 911 for a baby though lol

alpha got them snakes alright

i see you

rip sports cars for you!!

Breh, my snakes are alpha. January is the first month we said alright "let's make a baby". Three weeks later and we're pregnant.

I also have to say something: 9 years of pulling out and not one pregnancy scare. LMAO.

I have a 10 month old and its easy getting him in and out of the STI

Just sayin..

That's because it's not a coupe. Unless you're telling me to buy an STI, in which case I'd ask you to scroll a page back to see what my options include. Plus, I already have an M56S and the second car would be driven by my wife frequently.

I saw a nice looking 550i and considering that, as well. But probably unlikely.

CPO 2012-2013 M5? They're like $60-70k right?

I find this hard to believe personally.

- Unless people are running way to much power through the motor (very few people run stock STi's)
- MUST run 98RON fuel minimum
- Driving at fuel cut off

Do your research. Stock tune, stock motor STI's have been blowing their motors for over a decade now. Look up "Ringland STI motor" lol.

I did and not one of the people I saw on any forum that had problems ran a stock motor.

Again, can you reasonably assume these drivers were using the minimum 98ron fuel spec and weren't driving them at the cut off?

Eh it's pretty rare for a stock tuned one to get a ringland failure.

The majority of them occur from people either running a poor tune or no tune or shit gas or etc...

I won't deny the ringland issue is indeed an issue, but there are far more sti's on the road issue free than their are that suffer 1 + 3 ringland failures.
