It's not just you. This is basically a sequels season for me. I am watching other stuff, but my interest on the new stuff isn't nearly the same as for Haikyuu, Eupho and Gundam. Working!! is fun though.

This was painful to watch considering the in-show anime's "production slog" is something I've personally experienced (although not entirely so) and I'm introspecting about various things but deadlines come closer and work just piles up with each passing day. On top of that, I just can't help but think how difficult it is for everyone working there and the author himself to deal with something like that happen to what he wrote, even if it is trash.

When making something, things probably go wrong more often than I'm assuming, there's a lot more subtlety that I might be overlooking. There's a human element I don't assume when I read about directors, animators or producers and how they make something. God damn.

Chitose you naive little girl, I love-hate you. In fact, everything about this show is something I love-hate, except for Kansai-ben girl who I love-love.

Some scenes tried to compare those involved in the making with bizarre animals for some reason. The director's obligation to work persists through all that cynicism and despressing situations like the Tardigrade's ability to survive even the most extreme conditions, I guess? Chitose on the other hand was compared with a Sloth, laid back and carefree although I think it only partially describes her.

I would like to have a Sloth cushion too.

The amount of talk ReZero generated, should I really be surprised if it wins.

I still have no clue what that show is about aside from the lead guy "suffering".

I wonder will you guys think about make a W(worst)AOTY award btw.
Like in my country's forum there is a "Mahou Sensou award(=worst show)" and "Aldnoah Zero award(=worst ending show)" in every season lol.

I don't really think that's a good idea. Last time I saw a top 10 worst anime of all time list, it had stuff like SAO and Fairy Tail on it.

But I'm sure it would please some here, but I think it would just create a negative environnement

Considering the entire forum would participate in that, I don't think it will go without discourse and a ban or two.

Say what you will about Aldnoah Zero, like the endings are dumb and that the beginning is a Sunrise, Code Geass-style show throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks, but most of that show is a fun run.

Let's just all vote for Big Order and move on with our lives.

Yeah, it would be a head to head battle with that Tattoo anime for worst of the year (that some actually watched) because I'm sure there are some niche' anime out there that are just terrible beyond comprehension.

Is Branduil okay?

The episode started rather dramatically, it was a bit hard to watch, but it ended on a happy note. So good.

You don't need to vote.

It's Berserk (2016).

And maybe it wins next year as well :(

Equally nice and refreshing to see a review for such a film on this thread. Thank you, Jexhius!

Setting aside how the movie obviously reflects on present matters afflicting Spanish society right now, most of the look into the authors' message (as explained by them before too) should be traced back to Mr. Vázquez & Mr. Rivero's roots as spectators and later participants of the counterculture born after the turmoil generated from the 80s economic depression, byproduct of the industrial re-conversion suffered on key regions for the country's secondary sector like Galicia or Euskadi (both on regions where the director and scriptwriter of the film, respectively, were born), with traumatic closures and violent workers mobilisations at shipyards on Vigo and El Ferrol, or Bilbao's metallurgical industry crisis, as examples.

Part of the counterculture was born out of a more somber and cruel representation of the mysticism already embraced on deep parts of Galicia, amplified on its isolated communities (reminder, the original voice-over of the film is in Galician language), while on the bigger cities was permeated by influences from other class-struggle based subcultures prevalent at the time. Recreational drugs as means of creating a rebellious self-image or for simple escapism became commonplace, and along this the empowered local drug barons used the coasts of the region as Europe's biggest port of entrance for heroin and cocaine smugglers (that continues to be in a great part, up to these days). This situation was obviated by many as mere means of surviving throughout the economic difficulties, corrupting with this perception all strata of regional authorities that turned a blind eye on crime syndicates, while these clans were being supported by common folk oblivious to the misery it created... folks waiting instead for ultimate redemption on a religious penance coming from the only authority they could ever trust.

The "magical" fables ('fábulas' ó 'a lendas') like this one are what marries stylistically, in the most opportune way, such view into a marginalised and simultaneously oppressive community with the ignorance of the superstitions it befits when trying to distance itself from an own heavy reality.

As I recommended before, Sangre de Unicornio is necessary to watch too as a pure look into a more personal animated work from Alberto Vázquez and his distressful vision, aside from these bigger collaborations with Pedro Rivero.
Thank you for the very important and useful background information. This knowledge deepens my appreciation and understanding of the film. Your comments lead to make two additional points about the film (have you had a chance to watch it, by the way?):

1. The movie rarely judges its characters. It merely observes. These are characters who steal, take drugs and even kill one another. Yet it still largely frames these characters as being the victims of the society that they live in.

2. Having said that, the film does negatively judge one group: the police. They seem to be callous and ruthless, an organisation that is run by people only hungry for power.

3. The movie has a largely negative outlook - it is not a happy story. But, despite that, it still makes an argument that the future can be better than the past.

Even though I think trash (yes, there's that word again) deserves to be called out I don't think there's much point to this because most people know what anime is bad (namely, nearly all anime).

The only time I like to draw attention to bad works is something like The List, which promotes only the most entertainingly and remarkable bad shows.

One of these lists is completely not like the others.

Well you might want to sit down while I tell you this....

We are all a little different in personality, gender, race, nationality, stability and taste

There, I said it. You damn bottom of the barrel Texan's fan!

Did we add Green Green and Big Order to that list yet?

Since somebody mentioned Twin Star Exorcists...

I visited Tokyo Anime Center where they had an exhibition with stuff from that show:

Euphonium S2-4

Someone give me a proper defense of this. This is such infantile shit...

Wow at Asuka though, she really is a disgusting person and her behavior was deplorable and possibly counter-productive. She's supposed to be the villain right?

Yessssssss. I didn't mind this plot thread earlier on bah I liked it but the resolution and the reasons for behaviour of certain characters was just laughable. Oboe was a mistake.

On the other hand, I don't see much to blame Asuka for. It was not her business and she couldn't have known how Oboe would react when things came to climax.

Sound Euphonium 07

These people go to the same school right. Like, in one month, no one bothered to come over to Asuka and ask her what's up ? She herself couldn't be more cryptic and hence, troublesome over the whole affair.

That was a translation mistake. Asuka was only missing a week. I believe Crunchyroll fixed it already.

For me the best anime of the year are:
Amanchu! (sleeper hit of the year)
Boku no Hero Academia
Akagami no Shirayuki-hime S2
Kiznaiver
Mob Psycho 100
Re:Zero
Planetarian
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
Thunderbolt Fantasy
Uchuu Patrol Luluco
Ushio to Tora S2

Still airing (might still change):
Shuumatsu no Izetta
Fune wo Amu
Flip Flappers

Shard

XBLAnnoyance
Hibike! Euphonium Season 2, Episode 7:

Okay, the manufactured melodrama just needs to tone down a few thousand notches, it really is become the albatross of this entire season. On the other hand this had by far my favorite concert performance thus far, what song were they playing?

Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V Episode 1 – The Tracks of Light, Pendulum Summon
CxaIo7ZWgAAsIrJ.jpg:small

Still great the third time through episode. I always loved how he just randomly called out towards the light and got the Pendulum Summon.

Given its limited number of individual showings until now, I haven't had the time to watch it yet. I've read the graphical novel it adapts though, and have been following varied information and interviews related to its release as well, so I'm familiar with the intent of the work.

The points you bring always seemed to me like parallelisms between the work of Mr. Vázquez and the trend of raw costumbrist or 'quinqui' Spanish cinema in the early-80s made by directors like Eloy de la Iglesia, which searched for empathy from the viewer displaying young drug dealers and common delinquents as survivors just fighting for whatever scraps the rest of society abandoned them with; heroes product of their times, when taking into account what little they were shown with any solid resemblance of an opportunity to escape that life.

The added fantastical and allegoric elements of using anthropomorphic animals to deliver the message, which ironically gives us a way to make the effort of humanising and subtract with easier focus the moralising content held within, connects that digestible fable approach to the disenchanted tone he has towards that desperate spiritualism as a form of escapism (like the oniric spaces Birdboy travels) that plagues even today parts of the most secluded communities of our own society.

Yeah, as you say his works give the notion that the outcome might be positive in the end, but in spite of everything else that drags down any inhabitant of the selfish worlds he creates... it is then only an inner hopeful perception his characters mentally project leaving aside their inner demons (as it happens on other of his works called El Evangelio de Judas)? It would be a sustainable outlook in the end? That struggle covered of a stylish use of grotesquely charming imagery is part of what makes Alberto Vázquez fascinating!

so what is everyone top 5 new anime for this year?

I don't think I can quantify it yet, but there's a bunch I'd put on a short list.

Rakugo
Great Passage
Flying Witch
Sweetness and Lightning
Euphonium S2
Kizumongatari
Erased
Grimgar
Pocos Udon World
Tamayura
Alderamin
Snow White with Red Hair S2
Galko-chan

I really need to see a list of shows for the year. Is there a way to sort MAL by year?
