Occultic;Nine 2
So I watched this a while back before it got taken down. And it was pretty good.
Honestly, I was in the camp of people who actually got some enjoyment from the first episode, and this one was a little stronger, both because it was a little less hectic, and because it didn't feature the NEET blogger protagonist as much. It actually does a really nice job here of jumping between perspectives and back and forth through time without being too confusing, finding something to tie the scene before it to what comes next.
A few of the scenes in this episode were legitimately unsettling, like the fortune-telling that opened the episode, or the reading of the curse-girl's social media timeline. The latter scene in particular used this kind of heavily-silhouetted look along with some non-traditional montage to skew the mood a lot. I wish I could take some screenshots, but... you know.
My biggest concerns lie not with the presentation, but with the writing. They're going for something really ambitious, but the LN-fiction types that populate much of the cast don't give me much confidence that the payoff will be worthwhile. One of the most prominent characters in this episode (who only showed up briefly before) is an otaku detective shocked by his colleagues' lack of doujin culture knowledge. I couldn't help rolling my eyes most of the time he was on screen.
I'd probably keep up with it regardless if life weren't keeping me so busy, but it's hard to justify it now. The hope would be that it turns out like Steins;Gate, where the tropey cast gets opportunities to show off their humanity and the plot pays off most of its mysteries in a satisfying way. But I feel like the vast majority of the contemporary mystery-driven shows I've seen these days have all let me down, like Robotics;Notes, Punchline, or Mayoiga. May as well just sit on it. I've got a friend I trust who's enjoying it, so he can take that bullet if it all turns out to be bullshit.
