Avowed |OT| Is an oath worth the weight of a crown?

One of the few games I finished in recent years. The exploration was just so rewarding. The graphics were also fantastic as was the combat. The loot kind of sucked, but that was my only real issue with the game. Hopefully there will be a sequel. Or at least some expansions.

Lol, Marius is pretty hilarious sometimes.

I am totally hooked and looking forward to playing this every day now - it is so easy to pick up and rewards you so quickly each session with fun exploration and combat
VERY oldschool fun, and it just looks SO good. By far the best use of UE5 imo - at least for the environments and lightning

Also, having played Pillars of Eternity 1/2 I really enjoy the worldbuilding the games does too - However I can understand it being a bit confusing with all the name of gods etc being dropped all over the place if you never played the CPRG:s

This game will def will be a cult classic in the future

Ugh, I played over the time allowed for refund and deeply regret my choice to 'give it a chance.'

I must be playing a different game to you guys, this shit is dull as dishwater despite being an explosion of rainbow colours. It's just not clicking for me at all. The world is so stiff and unimersive, and combat reminds me of a mobile-first mmorpg or something. I cant stand the bland story / characters either :/

Can you elaborate on this? No idea how you come to that conclusion.

I dunno it just 'feels' off... I guess it just feels like there is no impact, you really don't feel like you are hitting or getting hit. The AI isn't great either.. I just feel like I'm spamming the spacebar whenever an enemy has a glowing symbol over their head over and over again makes me think of mobile games, I have no idea why, but I don't like it

the worse offender though is the fuckind gen/z redditesque humour cringe stuff, I just want to stab forks into my ears when these npc's crack jokes. It's not quite as bad as Veilguard but its up there.

I'm glad for people enjoying this, truly, just not for me. I'm stuffed and cant refund it now either, would have loved to roll that cash into something else, but oh well. is what it is

Yeah, I mean, fair - you don't have to like it. I just found the combat interactions to be some of the more enjoyable components of the game myself.

NPC stuff isn't awful for me, but not ideal either. I do wish we could go back to writing from 20 years ago on the whole.

But yeah, sorry to hear you're stuck with it now and didn't like it :(.

I'd just came to it after finishing Atomfall, which has giant leaps ahead in terms of writing quality, voice acting, immersion, and despite that game having quite servicable combat as well I was able to look past it since everything together was high quality.

I long for the day we get a game written as well as say Fallout NV again...

It's funny, I played Atomfall briefly (just no time right now) after Avowed and while I enjoyed what I played, the parkour for example stood out like a sore thumb and felt just so ... bad. But Avowed has awesome parkour. I still want to play more of Atomfall when I get the time, seemed interesting if janky (I don't mind jank).

Yes, I wish we could have another New Vegas... definitely one of the best games ever made. :messenger_fire:

I finished KCD2 (230 hours) two weeks ago, took a bit of break from gaming and started playing Avowed yesterday. It is quite a whiplash! World is completely static and dead, almost nothing is interactive, combat is action arcadey nonsense, one of my first sidequests was "bring me 5 medallions" like in some 2004-era MMO. You'd never see trash quest like this in KCD or Witcher 3. And of course I am playing "chosen one" "godlike" "envoy". Lately, American games are horrible when it comes to this stuff.

HOWEVER, I did play for some 6 hours so far and I do not hate it - the world is quite pretty and it is fun to explore it, in a comfort junk food kind of way. Still, I wish Obsidian would again some day made a game of the calibre of New Vegas or KOTOR2, but that seems unlikely since 99% of the people who made their classics have left.

100% agree. About the explosion of rainbow colors, I even turned off most of the HUD and combat elements to try and mitigate the constant visual assault of colors and lights even during basic melee combat and it did nothing. That on top of the game pairing you with unlikeable/uninteresting characters right off the bat let me know immediately the game wasn't for me. Shame too, I was hoping it would be, especially after what was a somewhat intriguing opening cinematic.

I wonder why they shifted so far away from the tone of the initial reveal.

Went through Ryngrim's area last night. Man it was cool as hell. Art design and color choice is absolutely off the charts. Was a lot of fun. Some areas almost reminded me a bit of Hellblade 2, with peak saturation blue right next to peak saturation red. Hellblade was still better visually, but this is an incredibly good looking game. Then went to Nabu Kubel and was floored again. The detail and view distance are pretty much unmatched in WRPGs.

Its pretty wild, the level of detail at huge distances. I dont know if thats Unreal 5, but Ive never seen anything like it before.

It's definitely an incredible looking game.. loved all the visual design.

Finished the main campaign in Diablo 4. Back to Avowed. Just did the archmage zone in Shark's Teeth and now I'm in some trial area, having fun. This supposedly mediocre game is something else.

Yeah, lately i had much fun with rather mediocre reviewed games. Civ 7, Last Epoch (more fun than D4 imo) Solasta etc.

Interesting! I need to check that out 👍
I enjoyed Diablo 4 a ton, but wrapping up the main quest was an anticlimax, end boss was too easy and no credits rolled.

In Avowed a random enemy spawn can put up a challenge and give me an entertaining fight, I like that a lot. The combat and world design is what makes it sing for me. I like how they place out loot too and the parkour. But upgrade parts as loot is the most boring type of loot reward I can think of, baffling design choice on that, the devs clearly forgot to play Elden Ring during the design phase.

Tommorrow comes Season 2 of Last Epoch with many good changes.

Cleared the game, on normal difficulty. 125 hours on the clock - but that includes a LOT of looking at pixels.

The only issue I had with the game is the voice of Sapadal, it drags the rest of the narrative down by being too pleading and obnoxious. Its funny you could literally tell them to fuck off in the dream conversations, it was tempting. It would have served the game better with a different tone for Sapadal, maybe some comedy would have worked better, to lighten up the mood sometimes. They were just annoying to deal with.

The game is a brilliant RPG and adventure game, though, Obsidian nailed the gameplay and characters and general narrative. As usual. With so much potential left for more games in the series, Id give it an 8.7/10 or so. The conversations with Sapadal dragged the game down just below a 9/10.

Still one the best RPGs Ive played in a long time.

Area 4 is super cool. I've finally perfected my ranger build. Bow / stealth is my main and decimates almost everything. Then if enemies get close, I go invisible and stealth kill the strongest one then switch to spear / gun. Spear has an effect to weaken defense 20% on power attack, and the gun has homing. Add in flurry of blows or slow with Yahtzi and nothing hardly is even touching me. Gave up the shield.

Build variety in this is pretty crazy.

I saw some very cool sorcerer builds as well.

Played a couple of hours of Oblivion and I think I'm going to go back to Avowed to play through that first.
Avowed is so much more 'streamlined' in it's mechanics.

I have a feeling the awkwardness of Oblivion will go away if I play it for more hours though.

I am playing BG3 right now and despite liking the game I feel that Dragon Age had better story and characters.

There just doesn't seem to be much progression in WRPGs.

Dragon Age Origins was done by Bioware close to its peak.

Kinda unfair to compare its writing and characters with whatever Larian does.

BG3 however is much better playground, sandbox style experience.

I'm so on the brink of buying Avowed on Steam, but is it really worth 70 euros? It looks really cool though.
I finished Avowed on Monday night after some 80+ hours (every side quest completed, fast travel unlocked, party camp, tried to do as much as I could find). I'm pretty sure I've clocked more hours into that one game since the start of March than I have in Skyrim after all these years. Amazing game and I loved my time in it, especially since Oblivion has me hooked in now, always enjoyed it over Skyrim.

If the game hooks you the way it did for me, then yes it's worth it, but 70 is a big ask regardless and my gameplay was all through Game Pass

I'm over 120 hours currently. I'm sure people could speed run it in a lot less if they wanted.

I'm biased from being a huge Bethesda fan but for me Avowed is several steps below Oblivion Remastered as a whole. Won't give it a score without finishing it. I did Marius village quest during the weekend, don't know how much more there is.

But melee combat is the best I've experienced in first person. Definitely above any The Elder Scrolls. I've played with two hand great sword during the whole playthrough. Feels great!

That said, I jumped head first into Oblivion last night and at this point I don't know when I'll return to Avowed to finish it. Avowed, while enjoyable, just isn't the same type of game, I don't feel as immersed in the world, the quest consequences are definitely felt but otherwise the whole thing feels paper thin compared to Oblivion.

But I'm not unbiased here. I love Bethesda's simulated living and interactive worlds more than almost anything else is gaming.

It sure was nice to hear the music during the first few hours playing the Oblivion remake.
The music in Avowed really 'tries' but it's just not hitting for me.

That said I've set Avowed down several times playing other games, but It's always easy to get back into. The game is just so quick and responsive to do what I want to do. Running around climbing on things is fun. The game in general has a more fun almost lighthearted feel, I'm going to get my wand up to legendary someday.

I'll get to Oblivion remake eventually. I already played through the game back during it's xb360 days.

mage gameplay is quite fun but I'm finding the story really uninteresting for some reason
spells look great, visuals are great and effects are nice so I will try to finish this one
I think I'm just not a fan of the art style and I find the world they've built uninteresting. quite a shame because I can see they really poured their hearts into it

like kai and marius join the group... it happens so sudden. oh you're envoy so we will journey along with you... doesn't feel natural

Finally finished. 9/10 from me. 135 hours but I took as long as possible and maxed the maps.. My only real complaints are that the side quests could have been better and there are occasionally some odd audio glitches that went away when I restarted. And the OST had some good stuff but was ultimately a bit underwhelming at times. Ultimately though its one of my favorite WRPGs. Streamlining the gameplay and elevating the combat while keeping the core WRPG experience is a novel approach and I loved it.

I actually thought the core story and lore was amazing. Reminds me of a great Final Fantasy almost more than a WRPG. The core debate at the height of the story and the big choices were all a lot of fun. I definitely got either a mid tier or bad ending but I thought it was awesome. The game ended on fun note as well as far as the fighting. By the end I was so powerful that the chance for longer combat was a ton of fun. Will absolutely replay the game again someday as a mage and on the harder difficulty mode. My ranger build was just total domination. Heavenstrike headshots 1 shotting almost everything. Stealth kills for massive damage. Dodges and handgun blasts at mid range with the Umbral Needle and attack speed up boosts with near max critical hit % meant I could rapidly shank people 30x in 6 seconds and almost every hit was a critical and healed me.

I also came around on all of the party. By the end Giatta was my favorite. Liked her voice acting and story was cool but they all had moments. Kai had great voice acting and I liked Marius' story. Yahtzi was my least favorite but still cool. I want to see how her other choices end up because I think I got the worst one.

Finally finished. 9/10 from me.

The game is flawed but I fucking hope that Obsidian sees the potential to build on this foundation. It could easily become a really beloved franchise with a sequel to removes all the wrinkles. Expand on the combat, the exploration rewards, better writers, etc.

I'm mighty interested to see what's next for that team.

I just cleared out the first map area and all the side stuff I could find, I'm now in the Emerald Stair. I'm sure others have pointed out that you leave the map going east but the area is west on the big map. Someone goofed. :)
Want to find a Unique Wand. I've been upgrading the same wand I got at the very beginning.
I think I'm in this till I see the end credits.

There's a path, although a longer one, from the east of dawnshore to emerald stair.

There's a collapsed roadway in dawnshore that would have been the logical exit on the map and actually, it's easy to miss, but your companion will say something like this would normally be main path to emerald stair:

But you do spawn at the wrong place in emerald stair map compared to over world map.

So they thought of it but I guess it was a late change in game maybe, an cancelled zone from the game to the east maybe?

The map is definitely bigger than you would think for the zones they have. I think a canceled zone is likely.

All those Oblivion vs Avowed videos that circulated during launch for drama farming, conveniently don't show the jank of this fucking engine. Remaster has the same fucking jank as the 2006 version

After playing Avowed fully and now playing oblivion remaster, I appreciate Avowed even more.

Yep, I am loving the Oblivion remaster, but one of my first thoughts were "okay, where are the comparison videos showing Oblivion Remastered's jank combat compared to Avowed and etc"?
