Her Dad caught them having sex and it just ruined the family dynamic permanently.
They were parked out by the tracks, they're sitting in the back and they just started getting busy when she whispered "What was that?"
"The wind? I think, cuz' no one else knows where we are!" And that was was when she started screaming "That's my Dad outside the car! Oh please, the keys, they're not in the ignition! Must've wound up on the floor while we were switching our positions!"
I guess they knew that she was missing, Chad tried telling her Dad it was her mouth that he was kissin'.

I believe this. She's still close to Deryck Whibley (he even worked on her album after their divorce).
The disease might have helped keep them together a bit longer. It forced both of them to stay together more. Or he was just a gentleman and didn't want to leave her when she needed his help.
But sum 41 is great
to be honest, I'm happy the guy came back from the brink of death. He looks much healthier now, hope he has a nice life from now onwards.
