Axios: Trump is pulling U.S. out of Paris climate deal

Sweet summerchild.

Trump is not the end of the fuckery in US politics but he just a symptom of a broken and sick system. And also interesting that automation will help China

Pretty much. Until we can fix this broken system, America will forever be stuck in an endless loop of Republicans fuck things up - Democrats try to fix it - Republicans fuck things up.

Economically, this couldn't be further from the truth. The US is still positioned to be the world superpower for many years to come, particularly with the incoming rise of automation which should all but destroy China's economy, at least in the short term.

And as bad as things look right now, Trump's administration is not permanent. It may take years to back out of the agreement anyway, so there's a chance that his position can be reversed before any real damage is done.

There's more than economics with regards to being a super power. For a century, the US was a country, smaller, developing nations looked up to as an example, and we just don't have that anymore. Watch how our economy starts to take a hit if we keep backing out or agreements and seem like a fickle, unreliable partner. It won't really matter how much money we have if we're ignored globally because our politics and policies are trash.

It's not just been Trump either. The entire country has been on a slide down since the 80s, with only occasional blips of decency with Obama and somewhat with Clinton. Everything Obama worked towards rebuilding the US as a country to be proud of after Bush, Trump just went ahead and actually made us more embarrassing as a country than Bush ever did. In less than 6 months. How much longer are foreign countries going to tolerate the back and forth from working with mature, decent people to the circus every few years? It's not sustainable and certainly doesn't make extremely long term, multi-decade agreements possible.

This doubly stupid for Trump/GOP

1. They could've just invested and prioritized creating jobs in alternative energy sector to make US the global leader in this area and exporting to other countries

2. Global warming is in Russia's favor since they are at/near the artic circle and would benefit from the melting. Especially at a military angle.

Depends where. In the US they are trying to put laws to restrict protesting. Then there are those that are scared that the police will kill them.

Trump is the president, because he is likable and able to lie to the people. In many parts of the US, people don't want to accept what is happening. They would rather cling to false hope, then try to figure out something. As you saw with people thinking that coal mines will open up and their way of life will return. Or those refusing to learn new trades, when there job is no longer needed.

The only way I see for them to 'change' is when they see the pendulum start to swing in the 2018 elections. Right now they are in power, and they can just ignore the signs.
Well stated.

I did read a comment, it was a brilliant insight of the future of US as mercenary country for oil rich countries. The GOP dream is make the country a mercenary country, exporting soldiers and military equipment to conflict zones.

/sad

Alternative energy sources are better for the economy in the long (actually mid) run, so GOP voters have no other excuse than it pisses off Liberals. Which is all they care about these days really.

But we won't.

You don't think American tech companies are going to seize the opportunity?

*That's* naive.

Too late, too little, to compete with countries with national agendas regarding to renewable energy.

China owns five of the six largest solar panal manufactors and now the largest wind turbine company. Yeah, can't wait how automation will kill them and provide the USA with the god given place on the top for all eternity.

At what point does this kind of thing amount to violence? An act of war? This is at least an act of hostility toward every living thing on the planet. There must be significant pushback from other countries to keep the US on track.

Germany bringing logic into this, bold move.

I'll put my faith in people like Elon Musk to ensure that better technologies are developed and adopted before I'd expect any politician to.

Republicans cut taxes, making a mess.
Democrats raise taxes back up to clean the mess.
Republicans: they just want to raise taxes and waste your money! Vote for us and we will cut your taxes!
Republicans cut taxes, making a mess.
Democrats raise ta.... etcetc.

The finger thing means the taxes.

Doesn't Russia still support the agreements?

Why a global revolution?

The only countries not in on this are Syria, Nicaragua and the US.

Even if Trump is gone in 3 1/2 years what stops the GOP from leaving again.

The problem isn't Trump but the lack of climate(or general) education in the US

This is so so soo SOO embarassing :(

Look at the next to last graph and weep oil industry. It's adapt or die time. The Republican party won't be able to save you.

It's not like they're all stupid:
Some major oil companies are reacting to this shift. Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Europe’s largest energy company, is betting on zero-emission hydrogen cars and building liquefied natural gas refuelling stations for trucks in the U.S. and ships in Europe.

Not surprising coming from a guy that campaigned on mining and manufacturing jobs in 2017. Still wonder if Pence or Cruz would have pulled out.

Is there even enough evidence that mankind contributes enough to global warming to warrant such actions? Seeing as there was global warming before we even walked the earth.

Yes: https://climate.nasa.gov/causes/

In its Fifth Assessment Report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a group of 1,300 independent scientific experts from countries all over the world under the auspices of the United Nations, concluded there's a more than 95 percent probability that human activities over the past 50 years have warmed our planet.

But several lines of evidence show that current global warming cannot be explained by changes in energy from the sun:

  • Since 1750, the average amount of energy coming from the sun either remained constant or increased slightly.
  • If the warming were caused by a more active sun, then scientists would expect to see warmer temperatures in all layers of the atmosphere. Instead, they have observed a cooling in the upper atmosphere, and a warming at the surface and in the lower parts of the atmosphere. That's because greenhouse gases are trapping heat in the lower atmosphere.
  • Climate models that include solar irradiance changes can’t reproduce the observed temperature trend over the past century or more without including a rise in greenhouse gases.

Humankind sped it up exponentially.

This is actually wrong.

We didn't speed up global warming, we literally have caused it. The Earth was in another cooling period and we completely canceled it out.

Sure, there are periods of warming/cooling, but in this case we are the only reason for such growth.

Essentially there's no bright side to allowing this to happen. If humanity survives long enough to continue history books, this era of our species will not be looked at fondly by any metric.

Did you as much as read the wiki page on the subject?

Seeing as there was global warming before we even walked the earth.

Oh wow that's even more horrifying. When was that determined we cancelled out the cooling period vs accelerated warming?

But since humans weren't dying before God created them 5000 years ago, and it was at that point that humans came into contact with quarks, it is with clear and 100% irrefutable evidence that I present to you that all human deaths have been caused by exposure to quarks.

I say we must fight this menace, build the quarkwall!

Pence, no. Cruz, probably.

Trump isn't the only one who wanted to pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement/Accord.

Here are the 22 Senators that urged him to do it.

"What if we make the world a better place for nothing!?" p much. Have your asinine views regarding how true Global Warming is, go right ahead.

But you can't deny all the other benefits this would bring, less pollution is good no matter how you twist and turn it.

There ya go

How many of these are in Coal Country?
