He's shooting this before DKR.

The budget is roughly equal to the budget of John Woo's Red Cliff, and approaches the total box office take of Aftershock, now China's most successful domestically-produced film.
Zhang's film will pull in the Hollywood effects team behind Saving Private Ryan and The Dark Night. Zhang and his longtime producer Zhang Weiping (no relation) of the New Picture Film Company announced Bale's casting and the hiring of Joss Williams and Martin Asbury's Dark Side FX to a roomful of hundreds of Chinese reporters.

The Nanjing Massacre, when Japanese troops killed thousands of Chinese citizens in what was then the nation's capital in 1937, has been the subject of several recent Chinese and co-produced films, each of which has included the character of John Rabe, a German businessman who helped save hundreds of Chinese refugees.

Bale will not play Rabe but instead play an American priest called John who helps a great number of Chinese escape certain death.

The script was written by Yan and Liu Heng, who wrote the novel upon which director Zhang's early hit Ju Dou was based.

"I met Christian in America and was impressed with his serious book research for the role," director Zhang said after playing a five-minute video mash up of clips from Bale’s Hollywood films, few of which have ever played theatrically in China.
The film will be shot about 40% in English and the rest in Mandarin Chinese, sources close to the project told The Hollywood Reporter. Zhang made no other cast or crew announcements.

“There are no foreign investors,” Zhang said, noting that it was too early to confirm what company might sell the film’s international rights.

Is this his first time directing a Westerner?

I tend to like Zhang's small budget stuff--I think I once read somewhere that every other film of his now are these big budget films so that he can fund his artsy projects.

Why don't you "go away" and see The Fighter. Trolling Bale in every thread is getting kinda pathetic, even for a Bond fan.

It's not trolling. I like Yimou's films and increasingly dislike Bale, so I am voicing my opinion on an actor I don't like being cast in a filmmaker I do like's new project,

OMG TROLLZ

my bad:lol co-production at least?
I'm sure there are several western producers involved and western special effect team but as said in the article film has no foreign investors, written by Chinese writers and the main language will be mandarin chinese so it's hard to call it western film. Director is making bucks only with domestic releases so I think Hollywood people aren't making any big calls with this film.

You must like a lot of directors I presume; because every time a Bale thread crop up, you're right there to let us know how much Bale sucks.

Of course a like a lot of directors, who doesn't? :lol
Also, there is a long history of tongue in cheek trolling between myself and DM and others with respect to Bale/Batman/Bond and usually thats what is going on. However, this is not one of those times.

Saw it when it was called Rocky.

Ah, too bad. It's totally not the Rocky movie the trailers paint it to be (except the disappointing end). Bale is fantastic in it though, and I tend to agree with you that he is overrated.

I just couldn't have any less interest in it, so I won't be seeing it. Movie seems very been there, done that, and I'm lukewarm on all three of Bale, Wahlberg and Russell.

Either I made up lies about the Boston Bomber or I fell for someone else's crap. Either way, I have absolutely no credibility and you should never pay any attention to anything I say, no matter what the context. Perm me if I claim to be an insider
So this make for 2 "Japanese were bad in WW2" films for him now.

Excellent.

This is going to be the one that's anti-Japanese propaganda targeted partially at Western audiences. It'll help China get foreign support for their upcoming war with Japan.

I'm not really joking.

Considering that Zhang Yimou's Hero is a thinly veiled propaganda for the communist government, I'm not surprised at all.

I don't think you are . . . although I don't really see China and Japan going to war with each other. Don't get me wrong Nanjing was terrible, but it's not helpful to create an inverse White Man's Burden film. . . Mao killed magnitudes more people . . . just saying - not that that's relevant. . . Anyway, I'm not surprised that Zhang Yi Mou is making a nationalistic propaganda film - Hero was a celebration of the upcoming Chinese dominance after-all . . . (actually if you're interested in Hero as a pro contemporary China as a propaganda piece check out Chen Kai Ge's The Emperor and the Assassin - exactly the sane story but told from a different perspective - as a companion piece).

The last Chinese film about the Nanjing Massacre was surprisingly un-anti-Japanese. The City of Life and Death. Heck, half of the film was from the Japanese perspective!

He's good at playing certain kinds of characters, which basically boils down to yuppies and down-and-out characters, but he's by no means a complete method actor. He does have a few dozen films, the overwhelming majority of which aren't home to a performance that's worth writing home about. Most actors have a handful of films in which one could name drop and tell someone to "go away", if Nicolas Cage were cast instead of Bale, I could just as easily tell you to watch Adaptation, Lord of War or Bad Lieutenant. Doesn't mean he's a particularly good fit for this role.

I actually find this surprising. The anti-Japanese rhetoric I hear from the average Chinese netizen is truly frightening. Sometimes I can't tell if it's Communist Party plants trying to whip up the masses and extole how the "heavenly kingdom" is much better than the imperialist dogs, or if people are just truly that angry and vengeful.

Then again, the average youtube comment is just as frightening, filled with hatred, racism, and wishes of death as anything I've heard a chinese netizen say, so maybe things aren't really that bad.

really tiring to hear all these anti-jp chinese movies, they really should be making movies promoting peace and common interests ... such as a pan-asian super state the likes of which to shatter the current world order!

Imperial Japan did some nasty things in China during WWII (and all around asia for that matter) and I don't see how telling the story is anti-JP.

Errrr...like what movies? Did you see any of these Chinese movies about WWII, like DEVILS ON THE DOORSTEP and CITY OF LIFE AND DEATH? No? Then what are you basing your opinion on?

Oh wonderful another Mando-historical epic film! I can't wait till China grows up and starts making the type of movies that made Hong Kong Cinema as awesome as it is, with modern urban settings. They have such great potential.
