Banjo-Threeie Debut Trailer!

Everyone please watch the video that Agent Icebeezy has posted in this thread. It gives a way better perspective on the game than the trailer.

Personally I'm now on Crushed's side. Haters be damned.

Damn straight. Though I wish the guys would shut up so I can hear delicious Banjo musics.

Considering DK DS, a port of a decade year old N64 game has sold more copies than any Rare developed Xbox & 360 game, I personally find the attack on Nintendo in this trailer pretty disgusting.

It also shows a lot of nerve.....they continue to collect millions of dollars by developing for the DS, and then attack the hand that feeds them...

I personally would love it if Nintendo withdraw their licence to develop for the DS.

With Rare's history of sales flops for the Xbox & 360, I would love to see if they still think it's funny to basically disrespect the company that (1) made them the success they USED to be by giving them access to Nintendo IP's, and (2) continues to allow them to develop games on a Nintendo system.

:lol You people who take this so seriously slay me.

Who the hell cares about respecting a video game icon? They're just showing you what you can do, and they've even said a programmer just made it with the contraption tool. You can see wheels on his feet!

I'm not taking it seriously, it's just really pointless to me. I don't see the need to do something so inane when they'd be hard pressed to make a game half as well received as Super Mario Galaxy.

:lol at calling the joke "disgusting", it's a fucking joke, grow a sense of humor.

You're missing the fact that controlling a vehicle doesn't offer any of the tightness or precision of control that the previous games had, something that's reflected in the haphazard, sprawling design of the levels. That's what's missing.

I'm sure this'll be a fine game, but it's hard not to be dissappointed with this reveal given the recent dearth of platformers
Why. Why are you assuming that a vehicle has no tightness or precision. Because it's made of metal? Why are these sprawling and haphazard even though they're similar to the previous B-K levels?

You're right. And now you're controlling Banjo and Kazooie. "Primary control"? What on Earth is that supposed to mean? Oh, you're controlling Banjo and Kazooie sitting in a hovering helicopter instead of controlling Banjo with a hovering bird in his backpack? And now you shoot missiles instead of shooting eggs? My goodness, it's just totally different.

I just can't get over how many people Rare have disappointed with this game. They'll be kicking themselves to know they could have sold millions with a simple trad-platformer.

You know what? You're probably right! And what's wrong with that? Animals would be more true to the actual aesthetic of the game, but more importantly, your creations wouldn't have PROPULSION as their emphasis. Animals can do a billion different things, but all the vehicles we've seen so far have had "move forwards with varying degrees of competence and maybe shoot at the same time" as their sole characteristics.

Amen.

Not to mention, small celestial bodies, each with unique platforming challenges, harken back to the abstract, bizarre, and quick minute-by-minute gameplay of the 2D sidescrollers. Essentially, by pioneering new ground, Super Mario was more like itself than ever before in Super Mario Galaxy. To me, that's "innovation." That's what I wanted to see in BK, but I think we got instead a diversionary mechanic. But like I said, Crushed is right. There wasn't much platforming to start with in the originals.

holy shit, so awesome! :lol

Who need comics and cartoons when you can just read gaf for your funny fix.

I've never played the old Banjo games, so I don't have sense for how this looks in comparison. But it looks fun as hell, with a nice visual style and tremendous possibilities in the vehicle creation. Unless the reviews suck, I'm sold.

It just looks and sounds fun.

If the contraptions end up being all sorts of varying things that aren't just about driving or flying around, then I'll gladly eat my words, but I prefer to base my opinions on what I've actually been shown. And right now, this shit aint banjo.

You can already eat your words then. If you simply watch the other video you can see the contraptions being used for platforming, plus from everything we've heard with the thousands of combinations possible they are not used simply for transportation.

If superman used a airplane to fly instead of just flying, it would not be the same thing.

If superman used a forklift to lift heavy objects, it would not be the same thing.

If superman used a gun to shooter lasers, it would not be the same thing.

Just face it.

The vehicle creation looks like it's going to be amazing. I love being able to build things in games and from the looks of it, they've done a great job with their editing system. I'm already thinking about how I could build a flying vehicle that also works as a boat. I'm just not sure what the limitations are to certain types of parts yet (like if they have a certain block that is for floating). If the people who wanted a standard platformer aren't happy, then you shouldn't try to sell this game off to them. The game definitely has my attention, but not for the platforming aspects (the sandboxey?, build any kind of vehicle you want has me).

I liked the previous Banjoo games, but this one doesn't look like much fun to me. The environment looks underwhelming, looks there's too much emphazis on customizing some weird vehicles, not enough platforming fun and weird creatures in this footage, animation looks bad in this video, etc.

Rare's Kameo on the 360 was good though, so I expected something far slicker and platforming fun dripping off the screen for a debut trailer.

This isn't the Banjo research thread it's the debut trailer thread.

If people are complaining about the gameplay mechanics when there are articles and interviews that explain them, they shouldn't be refuted by that information? Because this is the thread ONLY about the trailer? People have been talking pretty much exclusively about the overall gameplay of the game, not just the individual snippets of footage.

Yeah, it's just weird. Why would you basically make your characters less versatile than before?

Seems like a silly decision for an established set of characters.

Exactly, thank you. In that footage alone there are other uses.

One previewer talked about building a hook onto the bottom of helicopter so it could latch onto things and move them around. It seems like there is the ability to build non-propulsion related abilities into the vehicles to solve puzzles.

Driving a forklift doesn't seem better than being Superman. *If* the previews pan out, the vehicles in Banjo will be the same as the transformations in the previous games, but with the ability to create some of your own abilities. *IF* . I do agree that the environments look sorta flat, but I remember RARE saying in scribes that they would be remaking certain levels in previous Banjo games in Banjo 3, so hopefully those will show up.

Yeah, fully customizable abilities and hybrids sure are less versatile than a smaller amount of specific abilities.

Let's pretend this game is called

Bear and Bird: Vehicle Construction!

and Banjo Kazooie never existed.

Now, what does everyone think of the gameplay footage shown so far?

I think a lot of the problem is Rare's weird HD artstyle. Their games look REALLY CREEPY the way they are set up (VP and BK). I kinda wish they had adopted a more sophisticated WW artstyle instead.

Rare you are so lazy.
Did anyone smile (let alone laugh) while watching this trailer? Where's all the charm?
This game is soul-less.
Very very lazy boys...

The video game industry is weird. If Burger King had a commercial with The King pulling down his pants and doing a dump on the golden arches they would be sued before the commercial could make it to air. But it's okay for Rare to blow up Mario, somehow.

I just wanted a real platformer with better than Kameo (which is still really amazing looking) visuals. This seems interesting, but it should be a spinoff of a proper next-gen BK platformer... not instead of.

MisterHero said:
No. There was lots of platforming. I can't say anything for BT, but BK had plenty and was very fun.
Define "platforming." What was the "platforming" in BK that is so obviously not here. Examples. None have been given.

Well I guess I will give it a try. I'm not too into this vehicle approach but who knows? Could kick ass. Could totally suck"

The very epitome of having a completely new idea/franchise in the works, then getting pressured to slap on an existing character that's a complete mismatch with the original idea.

Star Fox Adventuritis.

Why is Kazooie even in this? Didn't seem to do jack shit the entire trailer.

Should have just called this:

"Banjo: Shooting and Building"

QFMFT. Kazooie is now useless. And to top it off, the trailer had none of the charm that was so very present in the older games :(

You've seen the whole game? Rare revealed everything today?

I don't know what's more hilarious the people trying to bash the new game play while being totally oblivious to what it actually is or the people crying about Mario getting his head blown off.

Tathanen said:
Did you even PLAY the old banjo games? The transformations were basically more severe Mario powerups. None of them actually involved DRIVING. You are vastly underestimating the difference between hopping around as a dishwasher and actually driving. A fast moving vehicle requires levels that are huge, open, and conducive to DRIVING. Levels like what we've seen in the trailer. Cars are not platforming devices. They are transportation. Nothing in this trailer indicates otherwise.

And EVEN IF THEY WERE IDENTICAL to the old transformations, those were never an EMPHASIS in the old games. You used them for maybe one or two jiggies per level. This new stuff, though, hardly looks as isolated.

Um, money van?

Mayles: People have grasped it a lot quicker than we thought. We thought there might be some kind of, 'This isn't Banjo any more, what's going on?' But this hasn't proved to be the case. People can see what we've done and how we're trying to approach the platform genre in a slightly different way.
How can they even call it a platformer anymore? Can you platform in a plane or boat or car? Or is platforming just a generic name for collectathon now?

Nintendo does it again! Day one purchase!

That video in the first post really is better than the debut trailer.

I don't think I've ever seen this much vitriol in one thread in so little time.
