Banjo-Threeie Debut Trailer!

Personally.. I say the blowing up of 8-bit Mario (the archetype of all platforming characters and their functionality) is a brilliant and intentional metaphor for doing away with limiting a character to pre-defined abilities.
Nice analysis. At first I thought it was uncalled for, but the way you put it makes sense.

I agree, the less the industry as a whole takes itself seriously, the better. Gaming is all about having fun, and the people developing them should reflect this stance. Games referencing each other isn't something to be downplayed, quite the contrary.

I think its more the press not wanting to air it, because Nintendo is already very finicky with the press (as far as who they let see what and when etc).
Nintendo could care less..you don't lose sleep at the top of a mountain.

Personally.. I say the blowing up of 8-bit Mario (the archetype of all platforming characters and their functionality) is a brilliant and intentional metaphor for doing away with limiting a character to pre-defined abilities.

Media Molecule made a similar gesture when they revealed LBP, but was more subtle about it with the whole blatant 1up mushroom thing.

Stuff like that is great for the industry at this point, I think.

:lol

I thought it's already been said that it was just a tester fucking around seeing what he could make, and it ended up making the reel, to show off that very aspect. And if someone builds a giant mario car, and you're in a machine that can shoot missles....well, you can put 2 and 2 together.

A public decapitation of Mario!

Is this how the world ends?

I have been watching this thread for the last day or so...

I cannot get understand how there is so much hate for such a cute looking game. It is one thing to critique the game play and graphics etc... but some of what has gone on really baffles me...

If a developer/insider comes to talk about a game, be respectful. To do otherwise is embarrassing to yourself, and others who would like to have a reasonable discourse.

Food for thought...

Last week we had MS PR (greenberg) embraced by many as being "cool, honest, and hardcore" as the PR mouthpiece lambasted Sony for slipping release dates, and late promises etc. Basically an embarrassing fanboy rant by their head PR guy. It's sad to say, there is a form of karma going on here.

As I have said before... I considered this PR guy to be an embarrassment to himself, MS, xbox owners and gamers in general. Now, flip it and reverse it, and we have people following that lead... unreasonably hating in my opinion.

Please don't comment on the spoilered content, if something rubs you the wrong way, please PM and not derail.

Replies to this post notwithstanding, this'll be my last post on the subject. The game, as has been shown so far, is a tacky mess, whether from an aesthetic or gameplay point of view. Collecting and constructing vehicles isn't an experience I will find worthwhile, and I'm disappointed (much like in Super Mario Sunshine) that the native abilities of Banjo & Kazooie will be overlooked in favor of mechanical contraptions. I cannot express enough how apathetic I am towards vehicular gameplay and what it entails in terms of level design (the areas shown in the footage are bare and expansive). The series was already scarce in the way of platforming, and with these changes, I fear the integrity of these few platforming challenges will be just basic, like the non-platforming shown in the later videos. But enough about that. BK: Nuts and Bolts isn't a platformer. And I'm fine with that. But the changes are so... so... contrived, I guess is the word... and I don't want to be a part of it. They don't inspire a seamless sense of fun or imagination within me, and that's too bad. My favorite genre is the platformer. I'll have to look elsewhere to other consoles for my fix.

That's fine. But I don't see the point of bitching about it for 40 pages of thread. Rare made a decision that some people don't like while others do. Who cares? Move on. Hate Rare if you like, don't buy the game, whatever. It's a done deal.

I don't mean to dismiss people's feelings of betrayal or anything, but this is taking it a bit far.
Well it isn't a done deal. Developers read this and many other forums and DO take into account the feedback of us, gamers. So no, it isn't a useless effort.

Even if that Mario was made long before the trailer, I'm pretty sure that what happens in that scene is very intentional. I'm also sure that Rare wasn't trying to upset anyone.

And they meanwhile keep getting positive feedback from the major gaming sites. They aren't going to completely redevelop the game to the likings of some people on a message board. I highly doubt it at any rate.

Why not make an online petition, send Rare email, etc.?

Oh! Oh!

I have a question! It's important! And this time I don't think it's already been answered!

Will we be able to share vehicle designs? Online, or otherwise?

the game looks empty.

That's what I was looking for in my first post here but didn't quite know how to explain it. Generally in the BK games it would be a world filled with traps and enemies and weird platforming layouts but this just looks...bare-bones. But it's not the finished version so...

That is totally untrue. May I direct you to the following interview?

You're wasting your time. The fact that there have been various interviews with Rare over the past couple of years also stating a good friendship with and respect for Nintendo will also go unnoticed. The fact that you worked with Nintendo only last year on Diddy Kong DS will go unnoticed too!

back-peddling from what, exactly?

you really think they put it in their to express some sort of "hate" for mario or what?
No I don't think anyone at Rare or on the internet has any sense of humor.

All I see is back-peddling...

And all I see is a stupid post.

Mario has always been featured in anything with custom creation content. He is the most iconic video game character of all time. Look at any game with custom content and you see Mario: Unreal Tournament 3 has a Mario level. Megaman Powered Up has Mario levels. Wrestling games have Mario characters. All this is, is a homage to the greatest video game character of all time.

That people are really that upset over RARE having a bit of fun and showing they're not some soulless company afraid of doing it, is really, really pathetic.

Oh Jesus fucking Christ we got rid of one problem with the thread, now you have to argue about whether or not blowing up a Mario vehicle in the game is funny or in bad taste?

Who fucking cares!

THANK YOU, I couldn't remember what this debate is parallel to, but you've summed it up quite good in that this directly relates to the hate that a game like Mario Sunshine receives.

Well all we see so far was a couple of glimpses of some worlds and shots of vehicle mini games.

what i find funny is that super mario sunshine didn't remove abilities - fludd only added to his abilities (i personally loved sunshine). but in the much celebreated galaxy, they DID remove abilities of mario (which was one of my biggest complaints with galaxy).
hokahey said:
It shows a lack of class on Rare's part IMO.

Maybe they wanted to deflect criticism from the game itself.
just relax.

Yeah but the abilities in Sunshine kinda made the game a bit too easy.

I don't think this game is parallel with the Mario 64 - Sunshine - Galaxy. If anything it's a lot like the platformers from 2003 that all jumped on the free roaming bandwagon.

See my problem is...there is something definately symbolic about Rare making an 8-bit Mario and having it's head blown off...

If it was just for fun or hilarity then why did it have to be a head blown off?...why not something more humorously creative? Did Rare expect to have people laugh at it?

I don't see anyone laughing...but I do see Rare back-peddling...

For me personally...it's Rare taking a shot at Nintendo...basically saying Banjo is here...and he's more mean and look we can be naughty...and are not bound by you anymore. Lame.

SMS is better than SM64.
Haha, no.

By the way, they should come up with a different title. 'Nuts and Blots' sounds a little too common, too bland. I'd rather have something that sparks my imagination, just as I feel this game has the chance to do.

Or it's one of the developers messing around building a vehicle to show off the game... and just decided on the spot to make Mario.... not some huge planned attack against the great mario God.

So its not what people were expecting, doesn't mean it wont be a good game. People here aren't just expressing that they also want a regular platformer, they're basically condemning the game, when the game concept is actually quite cool. Thats really what I was responding to.

Also I'm not sure I'd say the goofiness and magic is gone. Certainly not the former, the latter is just different.

jesus christ why is it so hard for you people to understand this
The people who feel let down by the game play mechanics were most likely looking forward to playing a game that consists entirely of controlling the characters directly, rather than vehicles. We're allowed to be disappointed with the complete change in game play mechanics, and we're not biased against the game simply because we find its recent developments appalling. This "you already wanted to dislike it before you knew how it played lololololor" is fucking tardiculous.

I see loads of people laughing. Look throughout this thread for a million examples. Then people who are offended by this make me laugh even more.

If you guys really knew Rare like you say you do you would realize that this is exactly the kind of thing they would do. They made a gigantic piece of talking shit in Conkers Bad Fur Day for fucks sake. And a cow with the screaming shits.

you sound like one of those people who can't take a joke about the country they live in. lighten up. i think a lot of people do find it entertaining and aren't offended by it, even if they have a lot of respect for mario (including me).

It makes me proud to be British.

Congrats F#A#Oo, you made my ignore list. You're either a Mario fan who is geniunely upset, in which case I pity your lack of a sense of humour, or your a shitty joke character (more likely) in which case I pity you because your life must have been pretty shit to lead you to this point.

Either way. Pity.

I liked the first Banjo.

I wasn't too hot on Tooie, but admittedly I didn't get very far in it.

I don't like the look of this one. And after 10 years they still haven't fixed the framerate?

Now you got people bitching over the mario thing wow.

I think this thread has officially hit the level of the GTA4 ps3 vs 360 comparison thread. The first one where it was pretty much anything goes. That's an accomplishment

This thread is pretty much dead for anyone ACTUALLY wanting to talk about the game without stealth trolls left and right. I'll be better off ignoring banjo threads from now on and just keep up with news and media of the game on my own time. Less annoying that way :)

Later.

Oh my god, you're so right!

I was a fool.

I'm sending an angrily worded letter to RARE as we speak, this matter is much more serious than I had realized >:(

No one should be offended. In fact, this trailer is being watched right now at Nintendo's headquarters, and this is what's happening:

Miyamoto: (laughs)
Iwata: (laughs)

Even they are laughing, you should too!

Has any part of the lobbies or online functionality been explained? I would like to know.

Also, today the discussion has evolved into people expressing their disgust over Mario's decapitation....
cry moar.

Did you actually read what I wrote, or you did just randomly find a post to click reply to.

I'll let you read it again. This time, try thinking about what you read instead of just glazing your eyes by. I'm sure you can puzzle it out.

If anything, Nintendo fans should be honored that Rare thinks highly enough of Mario to consider it the main threat. I dont see Banjo attacking Ratchet anywhere.
