Bannable Catchphrases

Alright guys, here's the deal. It's getting to the point where these catchphrases are being overused, so it's time to put them out to pasture. It's not cute, it's not funny and it's not furthering the discussion. And yes, before you ask, this includes pictures that make use of said phrases.

Without further ado, the banned list of catchphrases for the summer of 2005:

1) NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
2) Any form of Reirom speak, included, but not limited to, GAFFERS AM CRY, AM ROSEBUDDED TOTAL, BOMB BOMB, BOMBA and so forth and so on.

Against my better judgement, I'll leave this thread open for legitimate points and questions only. Think before you post.

Seriously, before replying, you need to ask yourself if you're bringing forth a legitimate point or question.

I'll state this, one more time.

Before replying in this thread, you need to ask yourself if you're bringing forth a legitimate point or question.

Damn, that was quick.

Number 2 is obvious, but Im gonna miss Number 1.

it's the opposite for me...

the whole noooo thing was old a LONG time ago.

I didn't really find reiromspeak to be all that annoying except for 'bomba.'

to clarify,

____ am ____ is banned, or just GAFFERS AM CRY?
ex. Ecro am sad

thanks

I second this inquiry.

Acceptable: "I am sad, I had a rough day."

Not acceptable: Ecro am sad. GAFFERS AM CRY.

Does this help?

Why don't you go for the jugular then, Matlock? "Matlock", in your world, has been popularized by you -- thus time for banning.

I'd have no qualms with that. :lol

Jesus Christ man. This bannable phrase stuff has to end eventually. There's a reason these phrases become popular and "overused" for a reason. It's the nature of things on a discussion forum. I understand you don't want this place to become OA, but wtf? When does a phrase become overused? When one of the mods finds it unpleasant? Why are some of these phrases banned, but other phrases used by many people on here forever not? Bannable phrases is the most idiotic, Draconian shit ever. Ban me for saying that if you like, it's the truth. It's the equivalent of the teacher giving you a detention for high-fiving b/c they consider slapping hands the lowest form of communication.

Man, and the way you threaten discussion of this with a ban is also pretty weaksauce IMO. I don't use any of those retarded catchphrases, but I'm not obnoxious enough to think they warrant being banned. I know this isn't technically an open forum, but shouldn't you respect the wishes of the community here? It's not a matter of putting it to a vote, but I bet most people here find this behavior rather overbearing...to say the least. We're not fucking children. But we should be allowed to enjoy some of life's simple pleasures. Believe it or not, Reirom and his joke character speak is one of them.

Now I get to sit back and ponder whether what I've said here is contructive or banworthy. Then again, I don't give a shit. PEACE.

When I see three threads posted by Wario in the span of a few hours all with Reirom's stupid Engrish being used in the subjects, it gets REALLY god damn annoying and retarded.

There's nothing cool about using bad english. It's as cool as 1337 speak is (in other words, not cool at all.)

It just makes you look like a retard.

If two kids kept high fiving each other dozens of times a day in my class I'd ban them from the fucking school and throw pumpkins at their house. Seriously, what the fuck kind of analogy is that.

People complain that the majority of users wouldn't want overused (your word, not mine. well, and mine) catchphrases to be banned, and that we're not children. I'm certain the majority of posters would like to be able to post porn, torrents to recently released movies, and so forth as well. You have to accept that while you make up a very small part of a large community, these forums are not yours. If you were to stop posting tomorrow, or any day, it wouldn't affect the forum one bit. This goes for pretty much everyone.

As for the "we're not fucking children" retort, there's a reason why the ban thread in the Mod Forum is nearing triple digits in regards to number of pages.

I could explain (yet again) why initially funny catchphrases that get overused on web forums need to get squashed, but it's just easier to point out how it's not your decision, so fucking live with it.

I've always found the bannable catchphrases thing strange... if someone is ONLY posting using that then I could see it... but if someone has a post that has an actual point.. and somewhere in the post they use a catchphrase... how is that damaging?

i.e. an OT thread example:

title: I got screwed today...

post:

this happened to me, this happened, to me, this happened, then I did this, this this this... But in the end it really sucked.... <sigh>darien am cry.

I don't really expect an answer, because I'm sure I won't agree with it anyway.... nor do I expect this post to change anything, GAF is a dictatorship, I know, I know...just kinda thinking out loud.

its a videogame message board. If stuff posted here really aggravates you or annoys you that much, you should probably reevaulate some things in life. Personally, i couldn't care less. Its pretty easy to adapt to the stuff mods decide is "ban worthy", but honestly, is it really that big of a deal when you see "reirom speak" or some other catchphrase that you have to spend more than 1.5 seconds of your life thinking about it?

In this case, can you think of an example where the banned catchphrases would be an integral part of the point being made, that is, the point could not be clearly made without their use? The problem stems from people just using these catchphrases to up their post counts, it accomplishes nothing else. Instead of racing to post, let's try to contribute and further discussion.

No but so what? Half the shit that is said in many posts in this forum aren't integral to the point being made. Folks ramble, get side tracked, toss childish insults at one another... and that stuff is passed over....

As I said people who just post nothing but a catchphrase in a response post.. yes I agree that's a problem, slap em down... someone who puts actual thought in to a post and just puts some slang in it? I don't see that as a problem... thanks for even deeming to share your thoughts with me on this subject, because I know normally edicts come down and there's no discussion.

So don't read or respond to it. Bad english is a part of the internet. There's bad english that's unintentional. Most people understand Reirom speak. If msot people here are fine with it, maybe you're just in the minority.

Remember when the forum was still unified and there was the big issue with swearing? The excuse at the time being that kids browse these forums, but kids fucking swear too. I see we eventually came to our senses on that and understood that prohibition was completely pointless. The same applies here. This is prohibition of slang. Internet slag that develops as a natural result of online discussions and the popular phrases that pop-up. By banning phrases, you are pissing in the wind...ice skating uphill. You are going against the natural flow of things. Things won't devolve into senseless babble as a result. New phrases pop-up all the time, and then wear off. Artificially shortening the lifespan (or trying to at least) is pointless. But whatever. What's the next bannable phrase? Something else will popup to replace these that we've now banned. What else will be made bannable?

Better yet, can we keep a lexicon of bannable phrases somewhere? Maybe isolated on a seperate server so they can't infect this one. That way n--bs can read it and know what not to say so they don't get the boot unintentionally. God knows that's never been a problem before, right? The list is growing. Why? No one can tell. Maybe PMS. But it'll keep growing unless some of you get more realistic about what you're dealing with. PEACE.

Thanks mods.

I usually appreciate a good running into the ground of a joke, but Reirom speak isnt' a joke, it's just shit.
I wish Television would ban Avril Lavigne as well, but I guess I can't have everything. 1 for 2 isn't to bad though.

I wonder if BuddyC has taped his "Hierarchy of GA" poster to the wall yet.

Why is a moderator moderating a problem? I think I saw some poppies before, they were pretty tall.

EDIT: Also the "We are not children" argument is exactly why I want some of the dumb phrases banned. Esp Reirom speak, if I wanted to talk with people like that I would go jump on a chatroom devoted to something like, I dunno. Avril Lavigne.

You'll notice that most of the catchphrases we're banning, and have banned in the past, originate from the board. At first, the bans won't be all that long and the length of a user's tenure (ie. newer folks that don't know better versus someone who does) will be taken into consideration.

yeah, but now, when a newbie or parttime poster 'accidentally' tries to be clever or funny by busting out the darthvader "NOOOO" or said "me am sad" or some shit, now threads are going to be interruppted with post after post of:

OMG BANNED!

DUDE YOU"RE SOO BANNED!

**instert picture of dude from Gladiator giving thumbs down with "banned" caption**

You better hope the mods don't see that!!!11

Hey man edit your post fast!

BANNED!!!!!!!!!

i don't see how that really solves anything.

You make a good point Darien, and it's one I want to discuss a bit further. It shouldn't matter if someone uses one of the banned phrases as long as they're making a point or contributing in some manner. But then we'd constantly have to reprimend junior members for using the phrases on their own, and in the end, it's just easier to get them out of everyone's vocabulary than it is to be selective about their usage. Easier to moderate too ;)

Yeah, this is a problem, catfish. :ROLLLLLLEYES The only problem is that on a forum with a bunch of idiots(myself included), a few notable posters can't stomach the occasional slang thrown around because it interrupts their idea and distorted view of this "productive and mature" forum. :lol.

I always found 'Late to the party' overused. Or 'so late to the party, blah, blah try to be funny comment' topic. Also omgwtfbbq ... put that on there too. Comeon, we need more than just two banned phrases.

Also anyone got a list of previously banned phrases?

bannable catchphrases should only be bannable when used in unfunny context. i still find a lot of them funny, depending on context.

Good to see that people who are continually posting the same drivel get a free pass while using the words "am" or "total" inappropriately gets a ban.

I support the banning.

Few things are more annoying than nerds repeating stupid phrases in a pathetic attempt to be funny.

If you really want to be funny, just put key words in italics. It works for Penny Arcade, right?

Right?

so what you are saying is you want us to ban people based on the fact if they are funny or not, in our opinion? hmmm... this might work...

It's not modding, it's powertripping. If you put it to a poll, I'd bet a ban most people in here would vote in favor of keeping these phrases. Censorship sucks. I sure hope that's not somehow a bannable phrase. :rollies:

And Reirom speak is not childish. Again, it's S-L-A-N-G. Gee, I'm a dumbass. What could I possibly mean by slang? It's a twist on the normal language developed/evolved over time b/c a large enough group has made it popular. Are we so elitist that we think we should enforce proper use of English on the internet? On a fucking gaming forum? W-O-W!!! I'm so impressed with this place now. :rolaids: No offense, but some of us have been here since the late-90's. Bannable phrases are an anomaly of the last year or two because a couple (how should I say) pretentious a-holes thought themselves judge, jury and executioner and so let the stick up their asses wag them all day long. And anything they felt crabby about would be banworthy. I've gone most of this time without a ban until last year when Hito banned me for a week for thread derailment. That I accept b/c I was out of line. But even someone like myself who doesn't use any of these bannable phrases takes major issue with censorship in any form. I took strong issue with the censorship of swearing back in the day, and was always vocal about it then. I will remain vocal about this form of censorship as well. It's nothing more than pointless dickwaving, and a slap in the face of the people who post here IMFO.

You'll notice that most of the catchphrases we're banning, and have banned in the past, originate from the board. At first, the bans won't be all that long and the length of a user's tenure (ie. newer folks that don't know better versus someone who does) will be taken into consideration.
Why not just tell the people you think are fucking up that they should start making intelligent posts or be banned? Why do a few dicks have to ruin the fun for everyone else? When the PS2 came out, we didn't ban the word "JAGGIES!!!" We didn't ban the phrase, "WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!!!" OMG!!! However did the forum survive? See what I'm getting at? Those of us here long enough to have seen the forum in its different forms know that this is bullshit, plain and simple. This has nothing to do with the quality of discussion here as a vast majority of the threads on this forum are legit. OA is a hostel to 'tards, but it doesn't mean copying some of their eccenticities will make this place the same. Again, if you got cramps, find another way of relieving your discomfort, but taking it out on the citizens of this forum is a complete disrespect. We're not children. Babytalk is performed by many adults, but it doesn't make them kids to be reprimanded. If you don't like something, by god, ignore it. PEACE.

I'm going to have to insist that we have a clause in the TOS which says I can ban someone just because I don't like them.

Not only are these questions answered in the linked thread, but you're using the acronyms that are still banned.
