Yankees are now out of the running for Beltran. Only a matter of days before Wrigley Field is his new home

Why are the Yankees out of the running now? Randy Johnson is a nice starter gift, but we still need a big present, Beltran will be it. There's always a chance that RJ gets injured, we need insurance that if our pitching isn't great, we will still score enough runs to win.

Cubsfan needs a new tag too:

Sorry. Survey says....Sosa is still a Cub, and Chicago is no where near on Beltran's radar. January 8th, Carlos Beltran will either be a Yankee, or an Astro. If he's not, I'll sacrifice my tag to MrBob or Cubsfan.

Cubs are looking into getting Maggs :lol :lol :lol

That's right Wrigley, take our trash. Before last year we should have just traded Ordonez for Clement =(

:D

Man. Maggs (His European surgery healed him! We'll take him for another 10 years or so before he becomes total shite like another south sider we stole years ago!), Beltran, and Patterson running our outfield! We are gonna be STACKED in 2005!

IF you somehow(and we both know it wont happen) got Beltran and Maggs...your OF would be the best I've ever personally seen.

LeBron loves his girlfriend. There is no other woman in the world he’d rather have. The problem is, Dwyane’s not a woman.

that was the philosophy last year and it didnt exactly work out. the unit (if he is indeed a yankee) is the pitching insurance they need. glad to see tino back. he'll show jason how to play a real drugs-free first base.

Reds fan here, and I think we are going to be very competitive in the NL Central - just watch. We were 10 games under .500 even with:

1) A shitload of injuries to Griffey, Kearns, Dunn, Casey, etc.

2) Worst pitching in the majors, almost record breaking amount of homeruns given up. I think we were only a couple away from breaking the NL record for homeruns given up.

3) One of the league's worst team batting averages, and one of the leagues worst fielding percentages.

Actually looking it up - here is where we were in stats last year (out of 30 teams):

27th in league batting average
29th in team ERA with a 5.19 (only ahead of the perpetually Coors Field doomed Rockies)
29th in the league with 30, count em, 30 blown saves by the worst bullpen in all of MLB (only ahead of the Rockies, again)
22nd in the league in fielding percentage

And we were STILL only 10 games from .500. That's 5 blown saves if we coulda held onto, would have been .500.

I think we will finish 2nd or 3rd in the NL Central this year. We get rid of super terrible pitchers like Phil Norton, Todd Van Popple, and Gabe White - add decent starters like Milton, Ramon Ortiz, and add Mercker, Weathers, and Ben Weber to the bullpen. I'm not saying any of these guys are anywhere near Cy Young candidates, but lets be honest - with how many terrible pitchers we had last year, these guys are gold compared to the shit we had. If we could improve just a little bit of the terribleness we had, and if a few of our guys stay reasonably healthy - we could surprise a lot of people.

Beltran is beyond overrated at this point. His addition to the Yankees offense will be marginal, except for a stolen base here and there. He will have a lot more range on the field than Bernie, though.

beltran has always been overrated but he's still an amazing player and a superstar waiting to happen.

he alone would make the yankees a good defensive team and a very speedy team.

So I was reading about Roberto Alomar and decided to check his stats on ESPN (wondering why anyone would sign him at this point,)

So I click his name and there's his stats...

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?statsId=4189

Check out 1999 when Roberto Alomar hit 96 HR's and had 480 RBI's. What a season, and I missed it! Of course, he played in 636 games that year, so I'm sure he'll have a *.

:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

and the white sox made an offer to Pierzynski, woooo
better than sandy "i'm 67 years old and still cant hit" alomar

Yeah, the Reds aren't going anywhere. They have some nice bats, but not enough pitching. And we're not talking a Texas or Cleveland offense here either, so there's no way they're going to hit enough to make up for their starters. Milton, Wilson, Ortiz? Those guys are all #4 starters. You aren't going to win with a rotation of fourth and fifth starters. If healthy, Dunn, Griffey, and Kearns is a nice middle of a lineup, but Casey should come back to reality and the rest of the guys they have are pretty mediocre.

Then again, I'm an overly optimistic Pirates fan. From my standpoint, after the Cards and the Cubs, the rest of the NL Central is up for grabs, assuming Houston doesn't get Beltran or Clemens back.

and in the WHAT THE FUCK department the anaheim angels changed their names to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1958082

is this real?

yeah it's real. anaheim (the city or suburb or whatever) will try to get a court injunction or something. i think they should stay as anaheim. the city of los angeles is broken up into like a million fiefdoms anyway so what difference does it make?

Maybe it's the NHL lockout getting me down, but I miss my roto baseball so much. :(

Can't wait for spring training, and the Yahoo draft... got my eyes on a few sleepers. In my keeper league I have Teixiera, Hideki Matsui, and shit I can't remember my pitcher. There's a few quality SS in the AL this year who should be available in the third round, and *this* year I won't trade Eric Gagne for shitty overhyped big name guys who don't produce anymore. ;)

im hoping we can get a pay league (espn?) so maybe everyone in the league will stick thorugh it the entire season.

I'm totally down for that. I've tried to get people interested (sorry Truelize) in an ESPN league in any sport for quite some time now. Baseball would be a good start for a GA ESPN league. As we get closer to the season we can start looking for who'd be interested. I'd be glad to commish it, not that I'd want to step on anyone's toes if they had that in mind.

I feel bad saying this, because I know it'll turn people off, but I thought it was 20+ for a team there. Let me check again.

I hope this can happen. With Joe, Eminem, myself, Miguel, Astro Lad we've got a good base to start from, and with over 3 months to go I'm very confident we could fill it, even if it is the dreaded pay league.

Yankees got Unit?
I am cautiously optimistic. If they get 2 RJ-caliber years from him, I'll like the trade. If the Yanks win a WS or 3 while he's here, I'll like the trade. But Javy...too young, too potentially great. Still wish we hung on to him. :(

Anyway, enough of this hot stove, goddammit! I want the season to start so the playoffs can come around again. That MLB playoffs thread this past October was probably the best thing ever. I registered here for that shit. :p
