I am cautiously optimistic. If they get 2 RJ-caliber years from him, I'll like the trade. If the Yanks win a WS or 3 while he's here, I'll like the trade. But Javy...too young, too potentially great. Still wish we hung on to him. :(

Anyway, enough of this hot stove, goddammit! I want the season to start so the playoffs can come around again. That MLB playoffs thread this past October was probably the best thing ever. I registered here for that shit. :p

Yeah it was awesome. Best thread on the forum!

2005 playoff thread is gonna be even sweeter. Cubs winning the pennant and then winning the World Series it is going to be so awesome. Watching the White Sox go nowhere in 2005 will be cool too. :D

Now that Bears have disappointed us again with another lackluster losing season it is time to renew our Cubs/White Sox rivalry!

4-2 never forget! :D White Sox need to worry about beating Minnesota before winning the Al Central!

No worries about the Cardinals. Like I mentioned before their pitching staff will tank in 2005. Disastros will be dismantled by the time 2005 starts. No Beltran, no clemens. It is going to be a tough rebuilding year for them. Rest of the central teams are a non factor. This leaves the Central wide open for the Cubbies and after the 2004 debacle the Cubs are coming back with a vengeance. Remember, too, that despite how piss poor the Cubs were at times during 2004, if they had a decent closer the Cubs are in the playoffs. Dempster will shut them down in 2005! :D

that's all well and good, but our only competition is the twins. who had made no changes this off-season.

he now have beuhrle/garcia/duque/contreras/garland with no more shitty jose valentin, and we got rid of the 40 year old mike "i only give up the longball" jackson

The Twins could take the Arizona Diamondbacks current roster of players -instead of their own- and still finish ahead of the White Sox in the Al Central!

Anyone have any rumours on the BlueJays?
I can't wait until they start playing on new turf.
I can't wait to see the new Jumbotron.
Only 4 more months...

We got a new Jumbotron? What's the new turf? I've totally been out the skydome loop, since I didn't go to many games last year.

I haven't heard any new rumors yet. Still talk about getting a new pitcher, trading Batista even to get one..That's all I've really been hearing. The names change, but the idea doesn't.

(Yankees fight for Beltran, we fight for a new big screen TV! ;p)

I just got a 10 game flex pack, so I'm certainly going to be at a bunch of games this year. I'm debating whether or not to buy another.

Yeah, right.

Personally, I don't like the way ESPN does their fantasy sports. I like the customizable and easy to use Yahoo interface. Of course, I haven't fucked around with ESPN fantasy shit in like 2 years, so it might have changed.

IMHO, though, if we're gonna pay to keep people interested, we might as well all throw in $10 to a paypal account and play for the pot. THAT will keep people interested, and if it doesn't? You're out $10. Far better than just throwing money at ESPN, who doesn't need it.

i like that idea better because we'd at least be playing for something. or take the money and turn it into a mlb.com shop gift certificate.

I read from somewhere that the turf would be similar to the Twin's stadium. I guess anything is better than the bright green rug :D

I hope none of our resident Yankee fans take this the wrong way, but the day that Steinbrenner kicks it will be a good day for the competitive balance of baseball.

I disagree. He is far from the richest owner and always puts money back into his team whereas other much richer owners merely pocket his luxury tax donations and field crappy baseball teams year after year. :)

Whoo!

Congratulations to Wade Boggs for getting into the HOF on his first year of eligibility, and also to Ryne Sandberg, who finally got in after getting the shaft the last couple of years.

Boggs got 91.86% of the vote, Sandberg got 76.2%, while former great reliever Bruce Sutter got 66.7%, just 43 votes shy of HOF admission.

It will be interesting to see if Boggs goes in as a D-Ray. I think he's mentioned it before. Obivously he should be a Red Sox (as should Clemens) but they'll kiss his ass and let him do what he wants.

Statistically, his best years were spent as a Red Sox. But the uniform most people remember him in is pinstripes. He won that championship with the Yankees too.

Thats how it should be but I think Dave Winfield screwed that up when he chose his cap from the 1,532 teams he played for.

I know Clemens has stated he will only go in as a Yankee. He said he won't show up if he has any other team. I'd LOVE for them to call his bluff and make him a Sox. But, you know they'll bow to those wishes. I thought I heard Boggs wanted to go in as a D-Ray when he retired.

Like Boggs, Clemens won rings with the Yankees and I think that matters more than statistics. Most people will remember Clemens as a Yankee for all his times in the postseason, not that great pitcher in Boston.

Would Boggs be the first Devil Ray inducted into the Hall of Fame? That would be kind of neat. And it's not like he was a bad player in Tampa Bay. He was still a .300 hitter when he retired there, so it's not like some players that return to their hometown or a cellar dweller to watch their career die.

Clemens is a mystery to me as a Sox fan. His greatest accomplishments were with the Sox but is so bitter because of what Dan Duquette did to him when he left Boston. If he said he wanted to go in as a Sox, there would be no dispute.

Those were great teams and he pitched well but was his best stuff with the Yanks? NO. He won an MVP as a pitcher with the Sox! He was even better with the Blue Jays.

Look at the #s
3 CY and 1 MVP with Sox
2 CY with Bue Jays
1 CY Astros (at age 40!)
1 CY Yanks

Bluejays are supposedly after Shea Hillenbrand from Arizona. This means Hinski could be gone.

Hillenbrand : .310 AVG, 15 HR, 80 RBI's
Hinski: .249 AVG, 15 HR, 69 RBI's

..and I think Hinski played 6 more games too. Can't say I'm going to miss him at all.

I don't buy this argument. Plenty of guys win rings but don't have the stats to go into the Hall. You go in because of what you do on the field. Post-season stats don't count towards your career totals, so if you don't ever win a ring but win 300 games, does that mean you don't get into the hall? Crap.

If you're going in for what you did as a player, then you should wear the cap of the team that you had your best performance with. Is Hank Aaron a Milwaukee Brewer or an Atlanta Brave? If the Brewers had won a championship in his last year, would it have mattered? No. End of discussion.

Boooo we don't want your trash. Ah well can't say Shea is a huge loss either though he did have some good stretches (one good thing is that we got rid of Kim for him).

You're missing the point. I'm not saying winning rings makes you a better player, but your performance (this includes intagibles!) is at its peak when you're playing for the World Series. It's how you'll always remember the player.

Sorry. I don't think Boggs one championship season in NY eclipses his years of dominance as a Red Sox(Sock? eh.). If he had stuck around and won a couple more rings, well maybe. But one ring? Big deal.

Ok seriously, was I under a rock the past 3 days. METS FUCKING MADE AN OFFER?! WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKS!!!

They just fucking did the one thing the Astros couldn't afford. No fucking way in HELL that Steinboss lets the Mets outbid him on Beltran. Unless Beltran truly wants to stay in Houston, then he's going to be in NY.

I think it's a preference thing. If you were to poll the random ESPN viewer, I think the majority would remember him as a Yankee first and foremost.

Yes, but the majority of Americans that cared enough to vote also wanted George W. Bush as our President. I'm just saying, let's see how that shit turns out.

im sure steinbrenner still wants beltran, he's exactly what the yankees are looking for.

but the yankees are at the point where they might actually not be able to afford him.

Then many ESPN viewers must not know too much about baseball. :p Boggs especially being considered a Yankee? :p Now if the players insist on being put in on the team they won a championship on, I guess that's okay, though calling Clemens' bluff would make for good drama on his part.

Since the HOF is the big news of the day, I wanted to talk about pitchers and the HOF. Winning 300 games is more or less the gold standard for getting in. However it quickly seems that pitchers who have or may hit 300 wins will quickly dwindle to almost nothing after a few players like Maddox, Clemens, Johnson and Glavine retire. Take into account the 5 man pitching rotation nowadays and winning 300 games seems even harder. Do you think the standard will or should be lowered to allow pitchers who haven't won 300 or so games into the HOF? (I realize not every HOF pitcher has won 300, but many have).

It seems like just about any hitter could make it in the HOF nowadays. And they have the advantage in that it seems they get as many or more plate appearances than they used to. Whereas pitchers have less opportunties nowadays and even great ones have a hard time getting in the HOF. People complain about Sandberg being stiffed for a few years. Pfft! It's not like he would/should have gone in on his first time anyway. It took years for pitchers like Phil Niekro and Don Sutton to get in and they won over 300. As good as Bert Blyleven was, looks like Pete Rose has a better chance at the Hall than he does. :p It just seems like the standard for pitchers getting into the Hall is much higher than it is for hitters and it looks like that situation will get much worse in a decade or so.

Or should the reverse happen and the standards for hitters getting in be raised? It does seem like hitting 500 homers in a career won't have the cache it did in a decade or two.
