2 more days and this Beltran circus is over for Houstonians one way or another.

Then you guys get to see Clemens retire and your team fall apart.

I haven't seen a ballclub ruin and dismantle a Championship caliber team so quickly since the Marlins did it in 1997.

I thought the same thing the other day.

As a massive Mets fan, I want to write this now so if we don't get him, you won't thnik it's sour grapes: I think he is overrated and we're overpaying for him. Doesn't mean I wouldn't love to have him, but I won't pop junk if we get him. A bullpen and some contact hitters would be nice.

If Beltran truly "wants to win", he'll choose either the Yankees (even though they say they're not in it, I don't believe it), or the Astros. Cubs have had 1 playoff appearance in like 400 years. Mets have Ruben Stutt-tt-tt-ter taking up cap room, as well as tons of other bad contracts, and won't be able to field a good team until Beltran's 4th-5th year. Yankees are always in it, and the Astro have only had 1 losing season in the past 10 years.

Why don't you believe it? You're stupid or something?

The Yankees aren't in it. Case closed, Encyclopedia Brown.

why cant people believe that the yanks arent really interested in beltran.
THEY HAVE HAD ONLY ONE SIT DOWN MEETING IN THE PAST MONTH!!!! jeez..... you people are as paranoid as the north koreans......

Not having the Yankees in it makes it too Easy for the Astros. Nothing is ever easy for the Astros. :\

NO..... they need to show some money if tey really want to keep the kid. frankly, i dont believe he should command that kind of money but..... what do i know?

Reports are either....

5 years 70 million (no way)
6 years, 84 million (not likely)
6 years, 96 million (most likely)

For the Astros. Supposedly the Mets gave an offer "over 100 million"

That could be 100.000001 million for all we know, but it's probably more than likely at 17 mil a year deal, which puts them at about 102 mil. That's not significantly better than the Astros deal.

No, and with the difference in state taxes and Beltran's affinity for the 'Stros, the Mets must make a substantially better offer for him, which really gets into silly money. This kid ain't Alex Rodriguez. It may ultimately be the years they offer him too, like Pedro.

boras has already said that 5 teams have met his minimum offer of 7 years, 112 million dollars. the mets are the only known team to offer at least that.

Scott Boras declared yesterday there are five teams in the Carlos Beltran sweepstakes, all of which have met the agent's starting-point demand of at least seven years and $112 million.
could be bullshit, who knows.

I have a feeling the final Mets' offer may be 10 yrs and 170-180 mil. Minaya wants a new (preferably hispanic) franchise player to replace Piazza, and I think he thinks Beltran is it.

I wish we had offered these kinds of dollars to vladi dadi. Watching him hit 450-foot shots off of two-foot-outside shoetop-level sliders makes me weep.

Beltran hit over .300 in '01 and '03. His average dipped a bit this year, mostly in Houston. I'd attribute that to changing leagues in mid-season.

I'd rather have Vlad though, as long as his back holds up.

if the astros lose beltran, they'll have a legitimate shot at finishing dead last in the central.

:lol :lol :lol

at least their stadium isn't that large. that way, it won't look embarrassingly empty during the summer.

It may be nearly 100 years since our last World Series title, but at least the Cubs have made the big dance before! When is the last time the Asssssssssstros made the World Series?!! Oh wait... :lol

Wrigley Field gets packed win or lose. Tribune Company better throw us fans a fricking bone for once and splurge to get Beltran. They have the money to grab him even if they are overpaying! Spend some of that damn money!

Dude, be fair. Even minus Beltran and Clemens, the Asstros are still better than the Pirates, Brewers... and Reds. And you know this!

Eminem

goddamit, Griese!
The White Sox agreed to terms with free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski on a one-year, $2.25-million contract on Thursday. Pierzynski batted .272 with 11 home runs and 77 RBI for the Giants in 2004.

heh, wooo. now all we need is a shortstop. which we won't get.

and i dunno why, but my gut feeling is that beltran won't be in houston next season

Astros havent been around for 100 years...make fun of them in another 57 years if they havent made it :p

Then they will truly be as pathetic as the Cubs.

Without Beltran and Clemens, the Brewers definitely looked like a better team. The Reds are inconsistent, so who knows which Reds team will show up.

I could definitely see them fighting for cellar dweller space with the Pirates, though.

Huh? Seriously. If Pettitte is healthy, they still have a very good rotation with Oswalt, Pettitte, Backe and co. Not to mention Berkman, Bags and co. Seriously. The Asstros are no slouches, even without Beltran and Clemens. That said, without those two they're not in the Cards & Cubs league.

Wow, triumph really knows his shit. Well, I knew that anyway from Fantasy baseball. :\

He's one of few (AstroLad) that was pimping Rich Harden before I was. :( At least I think that was you.

I'm hoping Cy Backe can be a decent 3rd starter, possibly 4th *crosses fingers*

Anyway, I'm sitting here looking at clips of Game 4 and 5 last year. That blast by Beltran against Tavarez in game 4 was Ricockulous. It was no more than 6 inches off the ground and he pulled it to the Astros Bullpen. Insane. I love watching Tavarez flip out too afterward. :D

T minus 45 hours, 35 minutes til BeltranGate is officially over in Houston.

Pffft. Of COURSE I know my shit. Oswalt is one of my favorite pitchers, too, maybe second favorite after Tim Hudson(you really can't understand how fucking stoked I was when the Braves got Hudson. I ordered my Hudson jersey like IMMEDIATELY, here's hoping Scheurholz figures out a way to sign the man to an extension pronto).

The Astros have an above average lineup, rotation and bullpen even WITHOUT Clemens and Beltran. The problem is that the NL Central is one of the most stacked divisions in baseball.

In other news, let me be one of the first to say this: draft Joe Blanton in your fantasy leagues this year. Trust me, he's gonna be this year's Rich Harden. And in 2006, you're gonna want Dan Meyer. Billy Beane is a mad scientist, and the next couple years are going to prove this irrevocably.

Sorry man. I think all those years of being a Braves fan has made you delusional over what players make up a good team! :p

Yeah, sorry. 14 years of consistent dominance over our division has blinded me to what makes up a good team. Whereas the Cubs, with their 2 trips to the postseason in the same time frame, obviously are the epitome of consistent excellence. I bow to your superior knowledge, sir.

I mean sheesh. I even said that without Beltran and Clemens, the Asstros weren't as good as the Cubs. Am I the only sports fan that doesn't work himself into a blind, frothing fury over his team and just views it all objectively?
