Clemens would be ahead of Anyone in this fucking league except maybe Randy Johnson.

I love how the top 2 pitchers in the MLB right now are probably a combined 83 years old. :lol

goddamit, Griese!
Sox just signed the next Japanese superstar: Tadahito Iguchi

Iguchi won the Pacific League stolen base title in 2001 and 2003, earned three Gold Gloves and was named an All-Star four times.

Although Iguchi began his career as a shortstop, a right shoulder injury moved him to second base. He has thrived during the past two seasons in Japan, including a .333 effort with 24 home runs and 89 RBIs last year.

=D

Delgado a Marlin!

Just kidding, getting it ready though. :D Mets have offered him 4 years $51 million, Marlins offered 4 years $50 million. Oh and the Orioles have an offer for 4 years $48 million.

If the numbers are indeed true, he should be a Marlin VERY soon.

Again, as a Met fan, I'm saying this before it happens/doesn't happen: I think the money for Delgado is better spent elsewhere. I'd rather they dealt for a defensive stud in Doug Typo from Boston to deal with Wright, Reyes and Matsui, and go after Maggs for less money and fewer years and gulp, possibly, Sosa. Before anyone jumps down my throat on Sosa I will give you my reasons if you want, I used to be 110% against it but now that we have Beltran, I think it might work.

Delgado a Marlin- 4 year 52 million

"ESPN reports that free agent slugger Carlos Delgado has agreed in principle to a four-year contract with the Florida Marlins worth $52 million US. The deal includes a vesting option for a fifth year that could push the contract to $64 million US."

http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/news_story.asp?id=112575

Well I am thinking the mets are gonna go after Magglio Ordonez now. Perhaps maybe a John Olerud for 1st.

Either way, as a mets fan, I am very happy with this off-season so far.

Good move Delgado...

But 13 million a season?

They Jays should have been able to re-sign him for that much

Ah well
Marlins are gonna win the NL East!

I'm very disappointed with his decision, especially when he was so vocal about possibly joining the Mets if they signed Beltran.

Oh well I hope he enjoys playing in that empty stadium for the next four years (not that shea has been filled to capacity much the last few years but it's better...)

Marlins attendance is up thank you very much, in fact it's way up. I think Delgado alone will put more butts in those seats. Either way, he wanted to play for a contender and the Mets are definitely not that.

Juan Pierre
Luis Castillo
Miguel Cabrera
Carlos Delgado
Mike Lowell
Paul Lo Duca
Juan Encarnacion(will most likely be traded now, thank God!)

Are you a Marlins fan?

I think Dan LeBastard said it best when he spouted "Marlins attendance just went from 8000 on a Tuesday against Pittsburght to 8026 thanks to Delgado's large latin family".

I hope Sosa stays with the Cubs, because I want to see the Wrigley reaction when he comes up to bat for the first time in the home opener. And to see where Dusty bats him. Anything above 5th and you know there's still going to be trouble.

Damn, the Mets move one step closer to making me waste roto picks on 'em. I just keep thinking "you know, this year I bet they can actually pull it together". Thank god they didn't get Carlos or else I'd have lost all perspective and drafted half their starting roster.

I'm really happy for Delgado...dude was nothing but a class act here, as well as being a terrific slugger and run producer. Hopefully the Marlins will be a contender for the remainder of his career.

Wasn't he making 18 million a year on his deal here? Sure it's nice to play in Florida, but this guy hit the jackpot ages ago.

Yeah, but some figured he wouldn't get more then 10 mill a year for this deal. Others also questioned the wisdom of him waiting so long to sign a new deal. But he obviously made out better then expected, and gets to play as close to home as possible (well, unless Tampa is further south).

MIAMI -- Carlos Delgado and the Florida Marlins finalized their $52 million, four-year contract Thursday, a move that could change the balance of power in the NL East.

Delgado, who hit at least 30 home runs each of the past eight seasons with Toronto, passed his physical Wednesday and was introduced at a news conference.

"I want to put myself on a team that has a chance to win, and that's the Florida Marlins," Delgado said. "I can't wait to meet the guys."

Florida won out over the New York Mets, who also offered $52 million, and Baltimore and Toronto, which each offered $48 million.

Delgado has already started to earn his keep. The Marlins sold $150,000 worth of season tickets Wednesday, five times their daily norm.

"It shows my desire to win. Everybody knows how I hate to lose," Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria said. "This signing makes perfect sense for this team at this time."

Florida is trying to end Atlanta's record streak of 13 consecutive division titles.

"I still think they're the team to beat," Marlins manager Jack McKeon said. "They find a way to come up with the players. Everybody gave the Braves a goodbye last year, and look what happened."

There's no assurance the Marlins will be better than last year after losing ace Carl Pavano (18-8) and closer Armando Benitez (47 saves) to free agency.

General manager Larry Beinfest signed Al Leiter to take Pavano's spot in the rotation. Guillermo Mota is slated to become a first-time closer as part of a revamped bullpen.

A left-handed power hitter has topped McKeon's wish list ever since he became manager in 2003. Delgado's one of the best.

"Jack, I guess now you know you've got the left-handed bat that you want," Loria told McKeon, seated near him at Thursday's hiring press conference.

"About time," McKeon quickly responded.

"This ballclub has a very good lineup, a very good pitching staff and a very, very good chance to make it to the playoffs," Delgado said.

Delgado is the city's newest Latin celebrity but hardly the Marlins' lone star. He'll be one of seven regulars to have played in an All-Star game. And the rotation, the team's strength the past two seasons, still includes Josh Beckett, A.J. Burnett and Dontrelle Willis.

"The Marlins were good before Delgado, and now they're a better team than they were last year," said Leiter, who pitched the past seven seasons for the Mets. "With the considerable movement of players in the NL East, it's up for grabs. No disrespect to the Braves, but there's a sense that everybody has a shot."

Looks like someone was right. :)

Figure 150,000k in sales for 81 games at an average price of say 25 bucks a game and oh my, that's a whopping +75 to attendance. Judging by the 5 times comment and you have an average of 15 season tickets being sold a day prior to the signing. Obviously, this is all fuzzy speshy-math, but I'm still not impressed.

Let's be real here, Miami is not a baseball city. If they move to the team further south to the slum known as Bayside, they'll lose even more of the fan base. For this team to succeed, they need a retrtactable roof stadium in Broward, and they need everyone to stop busting all of their sports related nuts on the Dolphins.

Shaq can't sell out a fuckin Heat game (and up until recently, they were on an absolute tear), you think Delgado's going to make this a baseball city?

It's only one days worth of sales, not to mention still playing at "Dolphins" stadium. You do know the Marlins already pretty much play in Broward, right? I mean you can't get any closer without actually being in Broward.

You're right though, Miami isn't a baseball town. Hell, all of Florida isn't. It has always been a football state. It's hard to build up a fanbase when the Marlins have had bad ownership over the years. Like I said, attendance was up last year and it will be higher this year. Fans will realize the Marlins are serious about winning, for a change.

And Dolphins stadium will have a retractable roof. Just heard Huizenga said screw you Marlins! hahaha! Where do you get Bayside from? The stadium would be by the Orange Bowl, which is also getting renovated. Going to Broward won't help, it's not helping now and it sure as hell didn't help the Panthers.

And for clarification, Heat attendance is up about 33% per game from last year. Not too bad.

its probably for the best that he didn't sign with Mets. Can you imagine the shit that would fly the first time he decides to sit through the playing of the National Anthem as a protest?

Yikes Orange Bowl is even worse. Are they try to re-create the Yankee Stadium in the Bronx motiff? I thought they were looking to do something by where the Miami Arena is. I remember playing dodge the homeless my first trip to a Heat game before they moved the AAA. That was fun. In NY, homeless folks were everywhere. In Miami, they're all on one block.

I was thinking more like Sunrise, by Sawgrass where the Panthers play. Accessible to highways, plenty of nice places to go after a game, stuff like that.

That would be insane. Personally I think we shouldn't do it, partially because he's damaged goods, and partially because aren't we supposed to be rebuilding? I doubt it'll happen, but if hell froze over and the Blue Jays actually signed a major free agent (for too much money!!) I'd be very curious as to the result.

Anyone listening to WGN Radio? They had a reporter from the Orioles on a few minutes ago and he said Sosa to Baltimore was imminent..supposedly Hairston Jr plus 2 prospects, for Sosa and cash.

If true, it must be a BOATLOAD of cash.

If Delgado had become a Yankee and done that, he'd still get cheered the moment he hits a home run. As long as you produce, no one gives a shit.

And WTF, where's all the Sosa reaction? Has he fallen that far off the radar? Not that I care myself. :lol

Heh, I was just about to post regarding Sosa, but then I saw the other thread. Now that I've been beaten to the punch, I'm protesting by not posting in that thread! Keep MLB breaking news in the baseball thread!

The Orioles... that is so where I'd put Sosa.. the seventh level of the AL East.

Honestly, why does MLB even allow other teams to play in the AL East. They should just admit there's an obvious disparity in payroll and competition and hand the Red Sox and Yankees their own division.

"The Big Unit has already made a big impact on Yankee ticket sales.

As of Thursday, the Yankees had already sold 2,313,913 tickets for 2005, nearly 300,000 more than they had sold at this point last year.

The Bombers had sold 69 individual-game Hall of Fame suites at this point last year. So far in 2005, they have sold 225. And as they were last year, all Luxury Suites and Legends Suites are sold out.

The Yankees have already sold out their 16-game home spring training schedule at Legends Field in Tampa."

Okay I guess there could be some truth in the Jays/Ordonez rumour. According to MLB.com the Jays are among the 4-5 teams interested in Ordonez. And from BlueJays.com's fan forum multiple people are indicating that Detroit and now Texas radio stations have mentioned that Toronto is the front runner.

hmm..I still think it's highly unlikely. Where would Catalanatto play? As DH? But I thought Hillenbrand was going to be DH.. someone has to go....

Why would we pay MORE money for a damaged OF than Delgado? It makes no sense. All signs point to him wanting a deal far beyond our reaches, and even if we do put up that cash, why? It's way too risky, and I don't even see why he'd want to come here. Then again, money talks, and that's why Beltran is with the Mets and not the Astros, and why Pudge left the Marlins to go to the Tigers.
