I can't believe the Mets are obsessed with putting together a middle-of-the-order that would set massive new records in strikeouts with Soriano, Sosa, Sexson, Matsui and Cameron. Minaya has much better access to stats than I. Doesn't he read them? None of the folks he wants hit well with RISP, they K all the time, and are on the decline. We tried this same philosophy years ago, and got to a World Series and then paid for it every since by not building but papering over cracks.

Why be so obsessed with re-signing Benson when there are better pitchers out there for comparable money? Why decline Leiter at 4-5 mil and go after another five-inning pitcher who's guaranteed to break down for 13 per?

Unless Sosa and Pedro are foundations for the ultimate goal: Beltran for 10 yrs at 20 mil per. Maybe they believe the two former give them credibility.

minaya doesnt have a plan right now. he's just talking with anybody with a pulse and that's a mistake.

I swear I almost went blind reading that. If a deal even close to that is made by the Mets for Beltran, Queens will collectively commit suicide.

I'm not for it, mind you. I want the Mets to be players on Beltran, but not for that. I am just trying to figure out Minaya's thinking on all this, as it's baffling me.

MFY's send OF Kenny Lofton and cash to Philly for P Felix Rodriguez

Coming from a Phillies fan, yeah sure we need a CF, but we also need relievers. The fact that we had Roberto Hernandez even pitch one inning shows that we need relievers. Who knows the health of Billy Wagner? Lofton is old, and hasn't even played the past few years. God, the Phillies ownership/management annoys me...and they want to increase ticket prices? Fuck them.

I don't get that one, unless Minaya's trying to make the Mets the all hispanic team. Maybe they should see what he's asking for Glavine?

For Glavine, the astros will send them Carlos Hernandez and Tim Redding-Ramirez.

Hey, a Phils fan. Didn't know more then two of us could exist in the same place. I'm just about ready to boycott the season if they go through with the potential off-season plan of Kenny Lofton, David Wells and Sandy Alomar, Junior. Only hope is that Floyd, Madson and Hamels are worth the hype (really like Madson though). Plus, we have a ton of dead weight needing to be moved now (Marlon Byrd, Ryan Howard) along with a bunch of bums who are stealing money (Roberto Hernandez, Mike Lieberthal). I'll root for Rollins, Utley, Thome and Abreu (Da Bell is alright) but that's about it as of right now.

OH YEAH AND THEY HAVE THE NERVE TO RAISE TICKET PRICES WHILE CUTTING PAYROLL ON A TEAM THAT IS STUCK WITH THE SAME UNDERPERFORMING LINEUP FOR YEARS TO COME!!!

Were it not for the Igglez and the mediocre but entertaining 76ers my head would have imploded long ago.

what you talking about?

I'm assuming he means that with this latest steroid news, the Mets would be even more stupid than they presently are to touch Sosa in any way. Like Giambi, it seems as if the random testing and the likely subsequent cessation of use is at least partly responsible for Sosa's numbers drop-off.

"Determined to dump disgraced slugger Jason Giambi, the Yankees are assembling a murderer's row of outside lawyers to tackle his contract, several sources told the Daily News yesterday."

If the Yankees are interested, they and the Mets could have matching Japanese second basemen next season. The Mets are switching Kazuo Matsui to second base, and the Yankees, with Miguel Cairo the incumbent, have another Japanese second baseman to consider.

Tadahito Iguchi, who has played the past eight years in Japan, became a free agent last Wednesday and wants to play in the major leagues. He is 29, and in the last two years he developed into a solid hitter.

Playing for the Daiei Hawks of the Pacific League, he batted .340 and .333, has hit 27 and 24 home runs (30 is his season high), driven in 109 and 89 runs and compiled slugging percentages of .573 and .549 and on-base percentages of .438 and .394.

He has also been voted the best fielder and hitter at his position three of the last four years, winning the Gold Glove and Best Nine awards.

Say, why aren't the Giants fighting to dump Bonds? :D

I can't help but envision Giambi going, signing on somewhere for a minimal contract, and then becoming a Yankee destroyer. However, if he stays with the Yankees, he'll develop the physique of a washed up runway model and strike out swinging early on 20mph curve balls.

What if Giambi agreed with the Yankees to renegotiate his contract? Maybe 1 year, with performance bonuses and drug test req's with the Yanks getting an option year. He'd save a little face in NY, and he can't be any worse than Tony Frickin Clark. He's going to hear to roids chant wherever he winds up. I wouldn't mind a .275 hitter with 25 HR's, a shitload of doubles and 75 RBI's at 1B for a minimal contract (which is where I think he'll be if he's healthy next season.) If he proves himself worthy, all the more power to him.

they really need to make these foreign players go through the draft, like every other sport out there. but baseball is the most fucked up sport on the planet, as we've seen in the past week.

hope the MFY's are stuck with Giambi. they deserve each other.

It's comments like that which make me ask aloud, "Why, Mariano... Why? Did Millar have naked pictures of your pool boy?"

The Red Sox win, and yet the fans are still angry. Jesus Christ, give it up already. The Red Sox didn't exactly go through a long minor league rebuilding process to get to the top.

That's the Boston inferiority complex talking, and that will never change.

and neither did the yankees...those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

its just kicking a man while hes down, something yankee fans have done to us for generations.

as we learned from the ARod to Boston debacle from last year, the players union won't let anything remotely close to that happen. They are like a mafia, which is probably why the Yanks won't have much luck in voiding Giambi's contract.

the yankees dont want giambi. if they cant void his contract i think they'll just release him and keep him on payroll. the fact the yankees havent said a word about this says A LOT.

Theo, I fully realized that point... which is why I said what I said. I'm not stupid enough to talk about blowing youth and money on talent and be oblivious to the Yankees. I'm just sick of the evil empire bullshit. John Henry isn't exactly Mother Teresa. The Red Sox won, there's no need to be bitter about the Yanks still. It gets old. I thought the victory was suppossed to erase 80 years of sorrow?

I'm just wondering what the hell Giambi can do to save face (though I'm sure he's retarded enough to not give two shits.)

He should just disappear. Maybe play in Japan like Tom Selleck in Mr. Baseball.

these people are sick in the head. what can you expect from them?
edit: why not go after sheffield too? isn that a double standard?

Seriously, there's a chic I work with who seems to think the Red Sox wives share recipes, their kids play together, and there mothers sitting around sipping tea making quilts. It's frickin' obnoxious.

the yankees are THIS close to signing eric milton. milton recently let the yankees "inspect" his surgically repaired knee.

You can just see Steinbrenner slamming at the knee with a hammer, while Stottlemeyer sits in back of him repeating, "Who cares about the knee, I won't need a translator."

Astros offered $70 mil/5yrs for Beltran...isn't that what Vlad got?
Sweet!

Last rumor I heard was 6 years, 80 million, this seems like a good offer though. As much as I want Beltran, and if it were up to me, I'd probably go as high as 16-17 million, we can't just throw 20 million at him like Borass wants. Yankees will probably make a comparable offer, as will Anahiem and Chicago if they can get rid of Sosa. I like this offer though.

Astro's raised season ticket prices so I saw that coming a mile away. That's a good deal to start with but I don't think it'll be enough to bring in the prize catch.

I don't think it's our final offer. They offered a competative price right now, someone will out bid them (hopefully not by much) and the Astros will then come in at 15-16 million per year for 5 years, or 14mil a year for 6-7 years.

Eminem

goddamit, Griese!
meh, he'll be out half the year with injuries again

i just hope you guys get stuck with sammy, which is how it looks right now

The only good thing about keeping Sammy is that this is his contract year, so hopefully he'll tear it up and then kick his ass out the door

TORONTO (CP) - The Carlos Delgado era with the Toronto Blue Jays is over.

The Toronto Sun, citing an anonymous club source, reported in its Wednesday edition that the Jays opted against offering their veteran first baseman salary arbitration by the midnight EST deadline Tuesday. Players not offered arbitration can't sign with their former teams until May 1, meaning they will almost certainly end up elsewhere.

I don't mind this news. It would clear up a TON of space for us, and having a player like Carlos on this style of team (moneyball d00dz) wasn't really a good fit.

the yankees signed jaret wright for 3 years $21 million and tony womack for 2 years $4 million.

brad radke is staying in minnesota and matt morris is staying in st. louis.

your mariners offered him 3 years $15 million. but yeah...jaret wright?

he had a pretty good year in atlanta, let's hope it continues.

and i am very happy with the tony womack signing. him and jeter will be awesome at the top of the lineup and turning double plays.

all that can be said of Jaret Wright is that if Atlanta and their friggin magical pitching coaches passed on resigning him, he must not be THAT impressive.

The Yankees always do this. Signing pitchers who owned them in a playoff series 6 or 7 years ago is usual operation.

We should be signing Josh Beckett in 2009. Bet on it.

Back to Wright though, Leo Mazzone's magic got him to a 3.28 ERA... which still wasn't enough to keep his career ERA under 5.00. Basically, I think Jaret Wright is next year's Javier Vazquez.
