well somebody's bitter. how do you suppose that ortiz and glauss are gonna help you overcome the dodgers and giants in that division? the D-backs have a lot more problems. way too many to have them solved by a third baseman and a so-so pitcher. randy can get them those chips to help them rebuild....... but the problem is no team out there has the money and prospects for it.

johnson a shaky year?! the tema sucked hard!! what was he supposed to do!?

Nah I don't really have anything to be bitter about (well other than 111 losses last year), but I do find it kinda funny the way the Johnson situation worked out. To be honest, if they keep Johnson they can definitely make a solid run this year. Johnson, Ortiz, Webb isn't a bad 1-2-3. As far as the Giants, Barroid will be in check, so that helps. It really just comes down to the way teams are set up now it's hard to get fair value for Johnson, but that's only b/c he'll only go to NYY. It's his choice, but don't whine when you have to play for the D-Backs again.

Also I think Gooner was referring to Vazquez.

BDD Source: Red Sox signing of both Pedro Martinez and Jason Varitek to be finalized Sunday.

Also, Red Sox sign LHP John Halama. 1 year deal worth 1 mil

That's an awful lot of people to sign for a team that suppossedly wasn't going to be spending so much. Wells, Halama, Pedro, Varitek and Renteria...

I hope Wright failing the physical is true.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Great fucking signing by the Yanks, especially having saved the extra $3 to 6 million that originally was rumored for the deal. I hope they keep Vazquez too, because then if he turns around and returns to his normal quality self, maybe we'll have a nice combo as #2 and #3 in the rotation.

Pavano 2005 = Vasquez 2004

I think this is far more likely than an ace year. Even if he's that good, that pitching staff is still a mess.

Meanwhile, Theo Epstein continues to prove he's the real deal. Also he's thirty years old and fuck him.

I won't say Pavano = Vazquez.. maybe Pavano = Leiber. Both give up a shitload of hits, just not many bad ones... like say monster grand slams to Johnny Damon in game 7 of a championship series as oppossed to barely clearing the fence, wind blown homers to second baseman that look like axe murderers in Game 6.

yankees signed korean left-hander Dae-Sung Koo a day or two ago (or was it today?)...anyways...

"The reason why the Yankees is interested in Koo is his unique pitching form and the nasty stuff that makes the ball very difficult for left-handed batters to hit. He hides the ball behind the glove until he starts a pitch, even after the wind-up, making it extremely difficult for left-handed hitters to beat. When Koo was playing in the Korean League, Lee Seung-yeop, then the best slugger in the league, was only 6-for-41, struck out 22 times, with a batting average of .146"

i think hes only costing the yankees a million so its worth a shot if some left handed batters cant hit him.

"According to agent Scott Boras, Bernie Williams isn't shutting the door on trying to play first base.

"It's something he has given some thought to trying," said Boras, whose client Carlos Beltran is expected to sign with the Yankees and replace Williams in center field."

"Cashman canceled an early afternoon meeting with Pedro Martinez's agent Fernando Cuza so he could meet with the Braves and try to create an interest for Kevin Brown. It didn't take the Braves long to say no."

"The Yanks had been one of five teams remaining in trade discussions with the A's for righty Tim Hudson — joining the Cardinals, Dodgers, Orioles and Red Sox.

But last night it appeared the Dodgers were the winner of the Hudson Derby."

^^^wow

"Cashman said the chances of free agent Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez returning are "highly unlikely."
:(

"Although nothing appears imminent, there has been considerable interest in Javier Vazquez, with one source saying that White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen has been pushing other team officials to try to bring the righthander to Chicago.

The White Sox had been mentioned in reports about a three-way deal involving Arizona that would send Randy Johnson to the Bronx, and White Sox officials are still holding out hope that such a blockbuster might come to fruition, according to a person with knowledge of the team's thinking."

"Vazquez has also been included in speculation about a deal for A's ace Tim Hudson. Oakland GM Billy Beane is shopping Hudson, and Cashman said he had met with Beane this weekend. A source said it was difficult to imagine the teams being able to work out the finances of a deal involving Hudson (Oakland is wary about taking on Vazquez's bulky contract), and several officials believe Hudson will eventually end up in Los Angeles. There also has been speculation that a third team might be involved if discussions progress further."

Thanks for the updates Joe....It's nice to see the reports condensed like this. If my team had a chance at signing anyone (A miracle could happen and we might sign Clement) like the Yankees do, then I'd be more excited about the offseason...I'm still trying to keep up and your posts are rocking dude :D Actually, props to anyone who's updating this thread...it's helping one heartbroken Jays fan stay in the loop.

"Which organization stands to be hurt the most by this year's Rule 5 draft?

Without question it's the Cubs. Because of some depth in the minors and a few puzzling roster decisions, the Cubs have left a number of premium prospects unprotected. As mentioned, Andy Sisco is probably the best available talent, but the Cubs also stand to lose promising young arms like Luke Hagerty, Jon Connolly, Ricky Nolasco, Jae-Kuk Ryu and Carmen Pignatiello. In addition, power-hitting prospect Brandon Sing may also get nabbed. It doesn't figure to be a good day for Cubbie fans. Good thing Neifi Perez is hogging a spot on the 40-man."

What the hell, why throw El Duque away? Because you made him throw 140 pitches in a pointless game, turning the guys arm to swiss cheese? I hope that 's just a powerplay to get him to sign for less. Leiber and him saved the Yankees from completely tanking the second half of the season when Mussina was hurt, Vazquez was throwing fat pitches and Kevin Brown beat up a wall.

good catch by the yanks in signing pavano. now lets hope he doesnt turn into vazques part two. i still dont think the yanks can sign beltran.
the yanks seriously need to think of restocking ther farm system 'cause one of these days (if the day isnt here already) jeter will get old, bernie will get old (he already is) posada will be done, torre wqill be gone, sheffield, giambi, etc, etc..... but who's gonna listen to me right?

I just hope his arm holds up over the season. That's what I'm worried about as far as Smoltz is concerned. As for the Braves, I just hope they can make some good trades/acquistions this year. :( But with Time Warner money restrictions, I doubt it.

Hmmm...Garcia, Beuhrle, Contreras, Garland, Vazquez
Not a bad rotation at all.

The Diamondbacks, Johnson's current team, were to meet with Johnson's agents somewhere around 8:30 p.m. PT on Saturday night to discuss his situation. Arizona could broach a contract extension with the Big Unit, especially with the addition of Troy Glaus and Russ Ortiz through free agency improving their competitive nature, or a list of interested teams could be presented for Johnson's select trade approval.

One of those teams on the list will be the White Sox. Ken Williams entered the weekend believing the acquisition of Johnson was a dead issue, being told by general manager Joe Garagiola that Johnson did not want to pitch for the White Sox. But Williams saw a new chance to strike when Alan Nero, one of Johnson's agents, made it clear Friday that Johnson hadn't turned down the White Sox because he hadn't been asked about a trade to the White Sox.

Williams would not expound any further in regards to the Johnson situation.

"It's best that I don't comment on that today," Williams said during a Saturday night media briefing.

Though that would be better.

WASHINGTON UPDATE

- Nationals/Cubs in talks to bring Sosa to Washington.

... Why? Sosa is old and busted without his steroids, his contract is a nightmare and the Nationals already have a more than competitive outfield. Sosa would only be there to sell tickets.

- Nationals will announce one-year signing of Wil Cordero.

... If you can't sign Barry Larkin, I guess this is the next best thing.

- Nationals contract discussions with Odalis Perez on life support; Bowden looking to sign Loaiza, trade for Chacon.

... Jim Bowden, I am pleading to you. Perez really, really wants to play in Washington and he's delayed every other possible suitor hoping you'd fork up the cash. Backload his contract. You did it for Hernandez and Perez is a lot better. Any owner that inherits the team will undoubtedly increase payroll, so the Nats can do with Perez's contract.

Loaiza is not worth a roster spot. His career is a train wreck and any of the pitchers the Nats pull from the Rule 5 draft will easily be better than Loaiza. Chacon could be a good trade, because I think outside of Coors Field, he'll be a quality start. It'd also free up cash to sign a top-tier reliever like Steve Kline.

- Nationals will unveil their official jerseys at the ESPN Zone in D.C. this Wednesday at 2 PM, with Zach Day and Terrmel Sledge onhand to model the new duds.

... When can I buy them?

And according to TSN Corey Koskie has signed with the Toronto Blue Jays!

Exciting news...

Now if only the Jays were in the AL Central

And it's their old name. I'm glad they brought back the Nats to D.C.

It would be four years. At $14mil per. He wouldn't take three from the Mets when that's also on the table from the Sox.

I can't believe you beat Sven (8 seed v. 1 seed). Well he does have Chris Brown going today, but I doubt he'll get 26 points. Poor Sven, first place regular season down the drain by the afternoon of the first round.

Gammons said that the Sox are going to move ahead with a "Wait & See" approach of how the market shapes up. He wouldn't be surprised to see them go after a bargain bin pitcher. He also said it was unlikely they'd enter the Big Three trade-a-thon for either Hudson or Zito, but he did say it was a long ways away until the trade deadline in June and that Ben Sheets will become a hot commodity.

Washington Nationals just announced they signed Wil Cordero to a one-year deal, and offered Jeffrey Hammonds a minor league contract that will likely mean he'll make the team for the Opening Day roster.

Sources close to the team says that contract negotiations with Odalis Perez are pretty much dead, with Perez now fielding offers from other ballclubs. Some indicate Bowden is closing in on signing Esteban Loaiza and trading for Shawn Chacon.

The Nationals also released Rocky Biddle.

And the Mets have apparently cooled off of Sammy Sosa, which in turn has heated up trade talks with the Nationals. Bowden and Tavarres like the idea of Sosa in D.C. to sell tickets, but Frank Robinson hates his strikeouts and doesn't want him near his team.

Gammons just said Pedro is gone and the Sox don't really care!

They probably don't care. Get someone else. His arm will be broken down in 2 more years.
The latest buzz is that they are talking with Clement. Theo Epstein also was talking with Delgado's agent the past 2 days.

In Theo we trust!

EDIT- Looks like Petey going to the Melts is confirmed

Bye bye petey, enjoy winning 12 games a year for the rest of your career (which has 2-3 years left at best.)

goddamit, Griese!
The White Sox have finalized a deal to acquire center fielder Scott Podsednik, right-hander Luis Vizcaino and a player to be named for left fielder Carlos Lee.

FUCK YOU KENNY WILLIAMS

Eminem

goddamit, Griese!
It's a fucking miserable move. Lee is an extremely solid fielder with an above average arm, and he's a perennial 30/100 guy.

Why did they do it? Because they're fucking cheap.

Lee's salary is slotted at $8 million for 2005, with an option at $8.5 for 2006. Podsednik earned $550,000 in 2005 and earns $1.9 million in 2006, while Vizcaino had a salary of $550,000 in 2004 but should surpass $1 million through arbitration. The White Sox still have more than $6 million to work with, possibly targeting a pitcher like right-hander Matt Clement, who would like to stay in Chicago after his stint with the Cubs came to a close.

IF we can get Clement, this is a MUCH better deal. But if we don't...what a fucking waste. This pissed me off.

I know he's just itching to get rid of Konerko too. Yeah, trade ALL our goddamn offense away. Not to mention we already have a great center fielder...the fuck do we need Podsednik for? BOLLOCKS

But yeah, no matter what the AL East is like a fucking wasteland for everyone but the Yanks and Sox. The Central would sure be sweet, hell I'd almost cheer for a move to the NL.

If the O's could add another power bat and two decent pitchers, they could contend, but they haven't signed anybody. Not even Delgado. Or Perez. Or... anybody. They're working hard on trying to get Hudson, but I don't think they will. If they were to sign Hudson, another innings eater, and Degaldo... there would be trouble.

At this rate, I think the Nationals will have a better starting rotation on Opening Day than the Orioles.

Go local rivalry!
