i think minaya did the pedro deal just to get some buzz going for the mets. and the D-backs really need to decide if they are going to deal randy or not. either a team has what they want or they don't.

What's he whining about? His page shows last week's NFL picks as his last story, and he was pretty fair in that.

edit: nevermind em, I found the story in question on page 2's front page, not his page.

imo Simmons is still pretty funny. His first "behind the bench" column was fucking priceless and he's had his usual brand of pop culture references and unique sports insights. His city being such a big part of his column though, and being champions of football and baseball now, does make him lose that kind of underdog appeal that he had though.

His cartoon, however, is the worst cartoon I have ever seen in my life. I literally think they pick decent situations and then pick the worst possible jokes out of hundreds for those situations, while getting a 3-year old to do their animation. If his writing does go down in quality, the release of that cartoon will be an easy pick for his jump the shark moment.

"Baseball's D.C. return might be short-lived. The District of Columbia Council voted Tuesday to require private financing for at least half the cost of a new stadium, which might cause MLB to relocate the Nationals after 2005."

I just heard. This is such bullshit since Linda Cropp said TWENTY FOUR FUCKING HOURS AGO that she would vote in support of it due to some memo Selig sent here. Then she cockblocks the Nationals.

Tavares has cancelled the Nationals jersey unveiling tomorrow.

... Fucking asshats. D.C. doesn't deserve a team after this shit.

BIG NEWS:

Supposedly official, word is just coming in.

Braves have acquired Hudson for Dan Meyer + 2 other prospects. :) :)

NL East is way strong in pitching now with Pedro and Hudson in.

I especially like the Brave's rotation:

Hudson
Smoltz
Thomson
Hampton
Ramirez

:)

How fitting, I'm assuming Wells will have an ad deal similar to Schilling's with Dunkin Donuts.

"I play wicked hahd at the pahk"

:lol

Looks like the Sox just signed Renteria for 4 years. Nice.

Loved O-Cab but will take Renteria. Plus with the phenom Hanley Ramirez being ready as soon as 2006 we couldmove people around for a top notch middle infield (or good traid bait in Hanley Ramirez).

I've heard absolutely nothing about this, so it's bogus. Plus, the A's aren't going to trade Hudson to the Braves unless they get Giles.

I'm pretty sure all the Hudson talk is still rumor. Last I heard it was between Dodgers, Orioles, and Braves (apparantly the favorite at the moment) to get him (if a trade even happens). I was hoping for him to come to the Dodgers. Are there any other Dodgers fans here? If so, what's your take on the offseason and DePodesta's moves so far. Though it's still early, but I'm a bit worried about next season.

I have a feeling he'll probably go to the Orioles since Baltimore is willing to part with either Brian Roberts or Jerry Hairston Jr., Erik Bedard and another pitching prospect. They're overpaying for Hudson.

The Braves could easily get Hudson, but they'll have to give away Marcus Giles and a pitching prospect and I think that deal sucks. Braves can make anybody pitch well, so they don't need to give away one of the best second basemen in the game (something that is hard to come by) for a pitcher (albeit a good one!).

Why does baseball continued get owned as far as public relations go?
This Washington fiasco is just another thing MLB has fucked up on

It's not really MLB's fault as is Linda Cropp's fault, who lied after saying she'd support the vote just 24 hours ago and now introduced this goddamn ammendment to effectively kill baseball.

They cancelled the jersey unveiling today. Looks like baseball is dead.

On the other hand, how can MLB ignore a market that has already sold over 15,000 season tickets in a matter of a month for a brand new team?

goddamit, Griese!
WASHINGTON -- The deal to bring Major League Baseball back to Washington, D.C, was described by Mayor Anthony Williams as close to dead on Wednesday after the City Council changed the plan to require private financing.

"I believe the deal is broken. The dream is now close to dying," he said. "We're in great jeopardy here, and I think I'm being optimistic."

We hardly knew ye.

This is a shame and an embarrassment. I'm not going back to Baltimore, either. Angelos did his best to piss me off during this whole debacle.

Baseball, to me at least, and I've heard similar sentiments from lots of other locals, is dead in general.

let's not get ahead of ourselves now. i mean, there's still time to grease the wheels so to speak. we are talking about 15,000 seats sold already. they wouldnt ignore all that, right? RIGHT??? yeeesh, MLB just might have to kill the franchise altogheter......

Baseball basically has to make this happen though, right?
They burnt Montreal already, and they set up DC already. This can't *not* happen, I don't think.

I don't think the O's offer for Hudson is that impressive. Roberts/Hairston are not better or younger than Mark Ellis, so what's the point? Bedard was meh last year, though I'd rather have him than the overrated Edwin Jackson. Not familiar enough with the O's organization to guess who the other prospect would be, but it would have to be a damn good one for this deal to be better than the rumored Cards/Braves packages.

Or say hello to your LAS VEGAS GAMBLERS!

I'm absolutely pissed off about this, because it could screw over the New Orleans Zephyrs, who recently signed with the Nats to be their AAA team.

The vote, I believe, is still open, but I don't think Cropp will approve anything with private financing. She's making a gamble for the mayor position. The gamble is if MLB gives in, she'll be the mayor that saved local business millions of dollars in taxes and if the Nationals fold, she'll be the person that killed baseball.

The fact that Selig and DuPoy have said nothing means they're calculating their response and by all reports, it's going to be a bad one for Washington area fans. Selig tried to extend the olive branch to Linda Cropp, who said she felt like MLB was willing to compromise and would support the vote, then she turns around and nails Selig to the wall. She just burned MLB. They won't be happy about it.

I'd like to think that the fact that over 1,000 people packed into a trailer that was the "official" Nationals merchandise store in the parking lot of RFK on its first day actually means something. Or that the Nationals have over 15,000 season tickets sold and close to 50,000 queries for regular season tickets would make MLB think twice about removing the Nationals.

But they were supposed to unveil the Nationals jerseys today and that has be cancelled, so I think that speaks volumes about where MLB is at.

It can happen and it's looking like it will happen.

You've got to be on crack. Brian Roberts has stolen over 23 bags each of the last two seasons and hits .270+, with a higher OBP than Ellis. He's a billion times better than Ellis. Hairston is also another .270+ hitter who is one of the best defensive players in the game who can also steal 20+ bags if he's healthy. Both would be a significant improvement over Ellis, man.

Bedard was decent as rookie. Harden was not that impressive in his first stint in the majors and neither was Jackson. But Bedard is a big league talent and a huge prospect that the A's want.

My guess is that the other prospect is probably Adam Loewen or John Maine, their two best pitching prospects. Loewen is really, really young, though, but highly touted.

I'm afraid that if the Dodgers trade Jackson he's going to end up becoming the next big thing in pitching, but then again, he could end up becoming a complete flop too. It'll be a tough decision for them I bet.

I think he'll be pretty good.

Career OBP:
Ellis .331
Roberts .328
Hairston .334

Highest OBP:
Ellis .359
Roberts .344
Hairston .378

Hairston has been the best of the bunch over the last two years, but he's also been injured both seasons. Second basemen who get banged up frequently tend not to stay at second base for very long. Of course, Ellis is coming off a pretty severe injury himself. As far as defense goes, the A's defensive rating system had Ellis as one of the best second basemen in the majors, so you'd need to convince Beane otherwise.

I don't think any of these guys are young enough or good enough to get Beane excited. He'd prefer to use Ellis as a supersub in the infield and get a better regular at 2B, but won't take on salary for anyone who isn't a clear upgrade.

Bedard's performance was worse than Harden's first year, and he's already 25. He does have a lot of potential, and this was his first year off Tommy John surgery. Like I said, I'd take him over Jackson.

Here you go, from MLB dot com:

Statement on D.C. Council vote

Major League Baseball President and Chief Operating Office Bob DuPuy issued the following statement today regarding the legislation passed by the D.C. Council last night:

"The legislation approved by the District of Columbia City Council last night does not reflect the agreement we signed and relied upon after being invited by District leaders to consider Washington as a home for Major League Baseball. The legislation is inconsistent with our carefully negotiated agreement and is wholly unacceptable to Major League Baseball.

"Because our stadium agreement provides for a December 31, 2004 deadline, we will not entertain offers for permanent relocation of the club until that deadline passes. In the meantime, the club's baseball operations will proceed, but its business and promotional activities will cease until further notice. We thank the fans of Washington, D.C. for their support and enthusiasm, but given the present uncertainty, any ticket purchaser who entrusted us with a deposit may request a refund through the club's ticket office."

So I guess we should all talk about the new alternate Atlanta Braves hat and jersey now, huh?

I'm torn about the whole Nationals thing...

I mean on one hand, DC needs baseball. I know it would do well there. But I don't think that necessarily means that the club gets a taxpayer financed ballpark. That's bad for the people, lots of whom will pay towards the new stadium but will never go to a game there or even care about the team. Private financing of sporting venues is the way to go, in my opinion.

Edit: if the Braves DO have new alternate unis, there's nothing on their website about it. Just a big story about how they're still in the Hudson derby.

The Braves will have alternate unis in 2005, according to a couple of sports logo message boards I frequent. However, their unveiling date is TBA. But from those who have seen the latest styleguides, it is legit.

Here it is, from the SSUR.org forums:

Major League Baseball
American League
Baltimore Orioles (alternate cap)
Tampa Bay Devil Rays (minor modifications to home and road uniforms)

National League

Atlanta Braves (alternate cap, alternate jersey)
Cincinnati Reds (minor modifications to alternate jersey)
Colorado Rockies (alternate jersey)
Los Angeles Dodgers (removal of names from uniforms)
New York Mets (new BP jersey)
Pittsburgh Pirates (alternate home jersey)
Washington Nationals (formerly the Montreal Expos)

Lots of folks think it will involve the BP logo, as do I. Perhaps using that in a style similar to the Texas Rangers' vest...minus the vest.

You might also want to check www.sportslogos.net along with www.ssur.org if you like to look at logos, like me. Their boards are a little rough though.

A couple of things people seem to be misinformed about.

DC citizens are not paying for the ballpark. DC businesses are. The money to repay the bonds will be collected off of taxes from the stadium and local businesses, many of whom agreed to it beforehand. Now that the expenses might be an extra $100 million, some of them are worried. Linda Cropp is not protecting the "average" DC citizen, she's looking out for the businesses. The same ones that'll use the stadium for clients and meetings.

Second, this is what they agreed to. And if DC doesn't agree to it, several other cities will agree to a publically financed ballpark. Sure, it's not the most fare thing in the world, but 'dems the breaks, folks.

Looks like no baseball at all now...

In other words, baseball will honor its deal, right down to the Dec. 31 deadline. After that, it will start the work of moving the team to another city. According to highly placed sources, no games will be played at RFK Stadium next season if the Washington ballpark deal dies. "It's fair to assume that's out of the question," said one source.

so it was revealed on this mornings mike and mike show (espn radio) that:

a) the yankees asked giambi before he signed if he took steroids and he said no

b) after he was sick all season long they asked him what he had taken so they can treat him better and he said nothing, he was completely clean

the league already has its own punishments in line for steroid use. The Yankees can't just come up with their own by voiding Giambi's contract, certainly not based on some halfass verbal agreement.

it would be very hard to void giambi's contract and if they fail i expect them to release him and keep him on payroll or just buy it out completely. theres just no way hes on the team next season.

"For the second time in three days yesterday the Yankees and Diamondbacks had a brief and non-productive discussion about Randy Johnson coming to The Bronx.
And while the talk didn't shed new light on the stalemated situation, many people in the industry expect the Big Unit to be a Yankee in a week to 10 days."

http://nypost.com/sports/yankees/21419.htm
"A source close to the situation said the Astros are prepared to go significantly higher than the numbers attached to a reported five-year, $70 million offer."

http://nypost.com/sports/mets/21421.htm
"The waiting is over, and so is the pursuit. Pedro Martinez is officially a Met.
Martinez passed his physical yesterday, and with it, his new four-year, $54 million contract is complete. The Mets will introduce their dazzling new ace at an 11 a.m. news conference today at Shea."

RJ was supposed to "be a Yankee in 10 days" since this past July. :lol

If he does don the pinstripes, hopefully it's not for Javy Vazquez.

As for Mets + Petey, *swoon*
Now Tom Glavine can settle down and just win games as a part of the staff rather than as the staff ace, since that's Pedro's job now. Plus, Pedro'll own up the NL pitching to pitchers. That's at least one extra K a game for him...not bad. I like how Pete Gammons and friends on ESPN are spinning the deal like it's totally not a problem for Boston, or like Pedro is washed up or something. Hilarious. :D
