I got this in the Steam Summer Sale, and have put about 11-12 hours into it now, just got past the Killer Croc boss 'battle' and am moving onto Poison Ivy now.
I have to admit I have never been much of a fan of comic books, and the only superhero movie I have ever seen is The Dark Knight. Wherever I got my idea of what Batman should be like, this game seems to capture that perfectly. Although admittedly quite linear, the extra passageways strewn about, the 200+ Riddler challenges to find, all the interview tapes to find, and the absence of a 'go this way' arrow or icon gave me the feeling that I was playing a much more 'open' game than it really is. Every encounter I came to always felt like Batman would come out on top, regardless of the circumstances, which actually makes sense in a superhero game.
The stealth mechanics are easy enough but still worthwhile, and the stealth sequences with the multiple armed guards in a room never felt like a chore or overly frustrating. Later on with the inverted takedown, the batclaw, and the sonic batarang, along with the floor grates (which I haven't really used to this point), and the numerous vents, you are given so many options with how to tackle an encounter that it stays fresh and fun no matter how many armed guards you have to take down sneakily. If none of that works and you are discovered, the hand to hand combat feels absolutely sublime. Again, although pretty simple, (with a 360 controller, X to attack, Y to counter, B to stun, and A to jump/evade) it is still great fun to take down a group of 5-8 thugs without taking a hit. I also must admit that when you are about to knock a dude out and it goes into slow-motion, it's hilarious when the actual contact doesn't make much sense and the enemy gets clipped into a wall or another already knocked-out thug and goes crazy with his physics calculations.
Overall I think it definitely lives up so far to the pretty big hype that surrounded this game shortly after release, when people realized it was an actually good 'branded' game and was in the running for quite a few GOTY awards, including being voted
voted 2nd throughout all of GAF in 2009. (incidentally I have the GOTY version on Steam) I think the best thing it does is make you 'feel' as though it's more open and complex than it really is, and make you feel as though you are the damn Batman. Almost every encounter or room so far has seemingly given me the option to just take fools out out in the open if I want, or take each dude out stealthily and listen to the rest of them get nervous and yell at each other because Batman is in the room with them taking guys out 1 by 1. I am looking forward to
Arkham City in mid-October and seeing what they do with an open city that is "five times larger than the first game". I like the island aesthetic where Joker has control of everything, and want to see how a active city can work for Batman.
Also,
Joker's voice actor is fantastic, which is the first thing I noticed in the game when bringing him into the asylum.
Sorry for the month-old bump.
