Can still get everything after you finish it... iirc.

I'd say from memory, it gets tricky later on just after
Killer Croc, before Poison Ivy and then onwards because of all the vines...

Still think though that it was stupid tying achievements to something that's supposed to be optional. I hate when devs do that. Like when a single player game has mp tacked on and the devs tie achievements to it just to make you play it.
I agree with you about multiplayer achievements, unless the game is MP only.

However, I absolutely despise it when games give you achievements for playing the game normally. *One* achievement for beating the game is enough. Every other achievement should be tied to optional content/goals

There isn't. I finished the game and I was missing a lot of stuff and was able to go back to the first area to pick up stuff I couldn't have picked without the later gadgets. Also, you can keep playing after the game is over.

A bit of a spoiler in regards to traversal and level design, in a way:

You will notice that some areas are closed later in the game but they will open up once you defeat certain bosses or complete certain requirements.

I love Arkham Asylum still has legs. It's my game of the generation and singlehandedly rekindled my interest in gaming.

Savor every moment of your play-through and explore every nook and cranny. The game is brilliant.

Woot. I just beat the whole game and 100% the challenges and riddles.
HOLY FUCK at the jungle rumble extreme, i had to get 20-30K on the first bunch of guys just to make sure i got the medal. pretty awesome though.
Time for hardmode and 1000gamerpoints all from my pc.

Finally have the time to savor this game. Got it on this past SE week at Steam. Too bad my gamepad is acting up with this game for some weird reason, and the polarity of the Y axis of the right stick is inverted, so KB/M for me. :(

You got a DS3 laying around to configure with motionjoy drivers? I have mine set up with a BT dongle as well. Awesome comfy couch gaming.

I am interested. I do have a couple DS3's, but no Bluetooth dongles. Can you still use that with an USB cable?

So I just finished the PC GOTY version and I'm blown away with how good this game is. I enjoy stealth action games, that's typically my play style in most games that allow an option for it, but I was very surprised with the combat. What I like most with this game is the varied types of game mechanics you're subjected to and because of that, it never got boring to me.

I followed the recommendations of many and played it through my first time in Hard difficulty and I'm glad I did. I've watched some youtube videos of combat playing on normal and it looks like slow motion to me (the actual slo-mo not withstanding) after playing it on Hard. I know many hated Too Human, but during some fights, the way you ping-pong back and forth really reminded me of the rhythm I'd get in while playing Too Human. I'll be playing all of the extra content now just to get that sensation in combat.

Anyway, I bought it during the Steam Holiday Sale and damn it was an absolute steal. It friggin looks fantastic on my rig and I locked at it a silky smooth 60 fps. I can't wait for the sequel now.

Alright, having just beaten Ivy this is overall one of the best games I've ever played. But there are a few small things that absolutely infuriate me:
-Why is the Counter prompt timed so oddly? I've noticed that you can't actually counter as soon as the blue flash appears, but only like a second later right before the attack. This has led to probably hundreds of instances of me seeing the flash, going "oh shit", hitting counter and accidentally pulling out my batarang because I'm not actually in the counter timing window yet. In the heat of the battle it makes the prompt almost useless.

-Why why why can I not cancel out of attack animations to counter? Again, plenty of times where I see the prompt in plenty of time, but because I'm pummeling some guy into the floor, or hell, even throwing a regular punch, I get whacked.

-And finally, this is especially fresh off of the Ivy fight, who decided that a good way to increase difficulty between boss phases and/or subsequent encounters was to make them exactly the same, but to throw in a dozen to a hundred henchmen who I must now focus on and who I must pummel while avoiding both all of their friends attacks and the attacks of whatever boss/Titan mutant I'm fighting?

I take it you're playing on normal? I found that countering was actually more intuitive on hard, since it removes the indicator and leaves it up to you to time it right. It helps to be experienced with the game, but it felt much more natural to time it with the enemies animation instead of waiting for the icon to pop up.

I loved the shit out of this game, but I agree that starting from the Croc fight until the finish, it did drop a bit in quality. The Ivy fight and the spores sucked too. They didn't find a good solution for increasing the challenge without just spamming the same types of enemies at you.

The best thing the sequel can improve is the boss fights. They're the weak link in an otherwise fantastic game.

Yeah, it felt like they were running out of ideas after the Croc fight. There was one good take-em-out room in the sewers, and then its just kinda been "run from here to there, beat up whatever's in the way"

I'm about ready to play through this again, the game is so great.

Worst combat challenge is the stupid Shock and Awe extreme, hands down.

Just finished Arkham Asylum, and I'm kicking myself for not playing it sooner. It's not just a good Batman game, it's a good video game, period. Everybody needs to play this. There's no other way to put it. Bought it this past Saturday afternoon and finished it just tonight. No game in years has managed to suck me in like Arkham did. I could go on, but everything's pretty much been said already.

Arkham City is day-fucking-one.

Recently started playing this. Awesome! It's a mix of Metroid Prime with the Platforming of AC or POP games. Works great. Gives me awesome Prime flashbacks =O!

How far in before you get to the PoP style platforming? Because I'm not seeing any.

Nah I meant like hanging in corners, jumping, stuff like that. Not real.. wall run stuff if you know what I mean. Maybe POP was a bit too much =P.

Just had my first encounter with The Scarecrow. Man was that some epic stuff. It also sounded amazing in my 7.1 setup when you get to the morgue area. That was a very awesome experience dammit =P.

Hows does the Playstation 3 version run? I've played and beat it on the 360, but never have played it on the Playstation 3. I've only had the system about 6 months now. I'm getting really hyped for Arkham City! I just want trophies now. :p

Does it have any screen tearing? That's a big no-no for me in games and will greatly hinder my purchase decision.

I can't say for sure about whether or not there is screen tearing, but the game run's perfectly fine on the PS3 to me. Definitely one of the better performing UE3 games.

Okay, thanks. I just watched the comparison video on Gametrailers, and I really couldn't see any. I wish there was a demo I could try.

There was. I dunno whether it's still available though. The demo doesn't give a proper idea of the game though. I didn't like the demo so much, but bought the game when it was on sale, and ended up loving it.

I got this in the Steam Summer Sale, and have put about 11-12 hours into it now, just got past the Killer Croc boss 'battle' and am moving onto Poison Ivy now.

I have to admit I have never been much of a fan of comic books, and the only superhero movie I have ever seen is The Dark Knight. Wherever I got my idea of what Batman should be like, this game seems to capture that perfectly. Although admittedly quite linear, the extra passageways strewn about, the 200+ Riddler challenges to find, all the interview tapes to find, and the absence of a 'go this way' arrow or icon gave me the feeling that I was playing a much more 'open' game than it really is. Every encounter I came to always felt like Batman would come out on top, regardless of the circumstances, which actually makes sense in a superhero game.

The stealth mechanics are easy enough but still worthwhile, and the stealth sequences with the multiple armed guards in a room never felt like a chore or overly frustrating. Later on with the inverted takedown, the batclaw, and the sonic batarang, along with the floor grates (which I haven't really used to this point), and the numerous vents, you are given so many options with how to tackle an encounter that it stays fresh and fun no matter how many armed guards you have to take down sneakily. If none of that works and you are discovered, the hand to hand combat feels absolutely sublime. Again, although pretty simple, (with a 360 controller, X to attack, Y to counter, B to stun, and A to jump/evade) it is still great fun to take down a group of 5-8 thugs without taking a hit. I also must admit that when you are about to knock a dude out and it goes into slow-motion, it's hilarious when the actual contact doesn't make much sense and the enemy gets clipped into a wall or another already knocked-out thug and goes crazy with his physics calculations.

Overall I think it definitely lives up so far to the pretty big hype that surrounded this game shortly after release, when people realized it was an actually good 'branded' game and was in the running for quite a few GOTY awards, including being voted voted 2nd throughout all of GAF in 2009. (incidentally I have the GOTY version on Steam) I think the best thing it does is make you 'feel' as though it's more open and complex than it really is, and make you feel as though you are the damn Batman. Almost every encounter or room so far has seemingly given me the option to just take fools out out in the open if I want, or take each dude out stealthily and listen to the rest of them get nervous and yell at each other because Batman is in the room with them taking guys out 1 by 1. I am looking forward to Arkham City in mid-October and seeing what they do with an open city that is "five times larger than the first game". I like the island aesthetic where Joker has control of everything, and want to see how a active city can work for Batman.

Also, Joker's voice actor is fantastic, which is the first thing I noticed in the game when bringing him into the asylum.

Sorry for the month-old bump.

Hard. This game is pretty easy in terms of the main campaign. It's the side missions like riddles and combat arena that are going to test your skills

Might want to play on normal for an hour or so... get used to the combat. There are helpful indicators on normal that are removed for the hard playthrough. It's the only real difference. But those indicators are quite useful in the beginning.

I played through on normal and then replayed on hard. That's what I recommend. Both times through were very fun. And those indicators will be helpful during the few difficulty spikes the game throws at you. On the second playthrough you're ready for them, but on the first they can be quite a challenge (frustration) without them.

I would also say that people who recommend hard probably played through the game twice as well... take that however you want.

I'm having such a tough time with the shock and awe, and rumble in the jungle extreme. I run out of time on shock and awe, the titans always break my combos. I just have those 2 for 100%, then I have to do a hard play through.

I read recommendations about how the game "isn't that hard on Hard" and how people should just start with Hard... and I began on Hard.

While yeah, it really isn't the most impossible game ever, in the end, god DAMN it if I didn't almost tear my hair off and do nasty things to my TV & PS3 during the first battle when I didn't know how to do shit. I had to retry that for, like, 10-15 times. I dunno why it felt so hard, after that almost nothing caused as many retries. I guess it was probably because of the fact that the game took forever to even go through the basics. It was, like, 10 minutes of me just hitting the attack button because I didn't know how to do anything else... And the battlesystem didn't really click with me until the very late battles, that's when I started getting better combos (most were 15+, a lot of 20+ and even quite a few 30-40 ones).

Oh man I wish I could play through it again for the first time. That first walk through the Asylum when you're escorting Joker was just awesome and you knew you were in for something good.

I just played through this and beat it today. I rented it when it first came out and wasn't too hot on it I think because I was playing uncharted and assassins creed at the time. I feel like those games did stealth better, but now that I bought the game and just finished it I LOVED it. I took my time and explored as I went. Im super psyched about arkham city now.

I decided to play on normal since I had already started and so far the game has been pretty easy. I'm really enjoying it, as expected after reading all of the glowing praise here and around the internet.

The riddler challenges are surprisingly addictive, and they've really sunk their teeth into me at this point.

I've made some pretty decent progress in the game so far. Right now I'm at the
Botanical Gardens.

Just beat it on normal. Towards the end of the game I noticed it had tips for countering. I know it had the tip on enemy heads, but never noticed it before. The only thing I saw before was the combo tips. Weird, anyone else just get int he flow and over look them?

Yeah you do just kind of go with it and do what you want.

You need to be all over countering and combos when doing the combat challenges tho.

I hate the QTEs in this game. There is no rumble feedback so I can't tell when I'm doing it correctly, and the visual feedback doesn't really tell me much either. Sometimes Batman will beat the shit out of that airduct after I mash A, and sometimes he will gingerly tap it with his feet as if dancing the tarantella.

Mainly, I'm talking about the end bossfight. There's a QTE in there and no matter how much I mash A,
Joker won't fall back into the pit with me
. Occasionally it works. But other times, as I'm doing it, some asshole with a knife will slash me. Or better yet, the game will latch on to the boss without me pressing the keys that should cause that to happen. The first time I tried this it didn't seem so ridiculous. Could it be a bug or is my timing off? Do you spam A or metered presses? HELP.

I'm so happy to see people still picking up this game and enjoying it.

I ran through the game first on hard. The only reason I played through it again was because I missed an achievement along the way. It's one of the few games I have 1000/1000.

Just spam the button. No timing is required.

And make sure to take out all of the henchmen first.
