Batman: Arkham Shadow impressions videos:

The physical combat is the best I've ever experienced in VR on any platform. They must have spent ages on it.
I didn't think spider-man would be possible in VR because I didn't think you could make combat anything like the insomniac games. This game proved me wrong. I think any gameplay can be converted to VR after seeing this.

True. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts after scaling the resolution/GPU to 150% and those deeper blacks.
It might be a couple days. I'm going to opening night for an NBA game tonight, and I have two little kids so this is something I play exclusively when they are asleep. I'll report back when I can though.

Spiderman is an evolution of the Arkham games mechanics, and far ahead of this Quest version's combat. Look. I don't like the game, I'm allowed to think that, in the same way you're allowed to think it's great. That's it. Game is a 5-6 out of 10 for me. Good day to you!
But it isn't actually. The last two games I played was Spider-Man 2 and just finished a replay of Arkham Asylum. Spider-Man, Miles, and Venom are the same thing over and over. Not going to even get into how boring the Mary Jane parts are. Then the rest of traversing to the other side of the city every time. It's repetitive and twice as long as should be for the game play. Batman has multiple approaches for handling enemies. Spider-Man is faster paced but really has no extension or experience that is elevated over the Arkham games.

Now on to Shadow. This VR version is about as true as you can get to the Arkham games with current day VR. Combat makes sense within the limitations of standalone VR. Heck even the limited fov makes sense seeing that you are wearing a cowl. Is it perfect no, is it as smooth as it's 2d counterpart, no. But it's great extension into being in the VR world and is one of the best implementations of VR to date.

I did this at 150% I'll take the hit on game time for the graphics as I'm only going to be putting 1-1:30 at a time anyhow. Looks a good bit better than the default settings.

Yeah the immersion of VR obliterates the non VR batman games though.

It's crazy what this game accomplishes. The power fantasy of being Batman is not something that I thought would be possible in this way. I'm taken back to my childhood when playing this. I was a huge Batman fan when I was a young boy. I'm happy that boy got to play this game.

The combat is soooooooooo satisfying.

I'm using the Quest Optimizer. My resolution is around 150% and I have the experimental contrast set to about 25%. Game looks and performs great.

The resolution bump makes a huge difference. I'm also playing at 150%. Looks great.

I'm getting some serious Chronicles of Riddick vibes at a certain section of the game. It's not just the setting either. That's a win for me because I was huge fan of that game on the original Xbox. I just didn't expect it.

The controls just feel natural, I can't wait to play more. I'm exploring every knock and cranny. Im reading everything and picking up the phone and making the calls to the various phone numbers littered around.

This is a Batman playground where we ARE BATMAN!

I didn't call anyone... Does anything special happen or do you only hear audios!?

I only have the option to turn the black level contrast on/off

I just played a round with my family and let them try combat. Their first reaction was they couldn't stop marveling at the world and environment. That hasn't really happened with other standalone games.

Once I taught them the basics of combat they were hooked! The combat loop is simple enough for beginners to have fun, but it really ramps up at higher levels. It's just incredible that a AAA VR game can also have such engaging story and world, but also combat mechanics that are so good that they can be their own mini games and played indefinitely like superhot and others. Burning calories and not even realizing it. lol

as for me, I find Spiderman games to be a pale off-brand imitation of the Arkham franchise. I always have.

In any case, Spiderman/Sony could have easily taken the mantle first here and put their resources behind a full Spiderman VR game on PSVR2... I would pay to experience that. But they clearly didn't care enough to really fund VR experiences. So I'm with Meta on this topic, they're the only ones keeping it going with high quality.

Welp, it's official–Arkham Shadow has thoroughly convinced me that I'm too old to hang with these young whipper snappers and their VR technology.

While playing tonight, I was on the level after the sewers where you're running around the streets of Gotham beating up thugs. I was totally sucked into the fantasy. I was Batman: dropping smoke bombs, throwing batarangs, all that jazz. My fists were instruments of justice, and I was loving the power fantasy.

At one point I stepped forward to beat a thug into submission and I got a little too carried away. I was punching him down into the ground, shouting, "I AM JUSTICE!! I AM THE NIGHT!!" and I must have stepped a little too far forward because my next punch to his virtual head connected with my very real FULL can of coke, and I sent it flying across the room at which point it splattered all over the wall.

My partner frantically got up from their chair and said, "holy shit, really??" to which I could only reply, "it's a great game."

10/10 VR experience, just be mindful of your surroundings. :messenger_ghost:

You might need to get a little a mat and be conservative with your guardian. I have two little ones so this is something I can't play while they are up and running around.

It really does activate that primal side when acting out the combat. Lol.

I heard quest exclusive and didn't follow this game past that when announced, is there any chance at all this comes to steam and or other platforms? Or is this another re4 situation
Sadly no chance. This is not a RE4 situation where Sony gave Capcom money to make a VR mode for the game. This is a "Nintendo First-Party" situation. It was made in-house by one of Meta's studios, WB only provided the license.
I mean, yeah, it is indeed another RE4 Quest 2 situation, which was funded, produced and published by Meta.
Nothing wrong with that, IMO. Quest is basically another console and needs first-party games.

True true, Armature did that conversion. (Funny enough, they're the Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate devs)

This is genuinely the first killer VR app since Alyx.

I agree. For me, Asgards Wrath 2 is up there too but I'm a sucker for scale and scope in VR games.

I heard the guy from the Electronic Playground saying Batman is better than Alyx. I haven't finished batman yet but that's a tall order.

In some ways yes, in some ways no. Obviously not graphically. But this is a full blown Arkham game in VR. The Arkham games are better than Half Life Alyx, so there you go.

Seriously, has anyone ever exclaimed that they really feel like they're Alyx? No, you're just playing as a pair of floating hands. It looks good and the interactivity is unmatched but at the end of the day, Alyx is just another FPS. VR already has a ton of those. Batman on the other hand translates a traditionally third person genre into VR while standing shoulder to shoulder with its greats. The immersion comes not from waving a bottle of liquid around and seeing how light passes through it but by acting as how the character would act. The gameplay translation is phenomenal.

Arkham Shadow is a good game because it's a good game - it just happens to also be in VR. That's what's needed for VR to be successful. Interesting narratives, good characterisations, exciting gameplay. Same as flat screen games.

There are endless boring, short, basic games/tech demos in VR, but very, very few legitimately good games. Certainly not what would be considered good once you strip away the fact they're in VR.

Boneworks may be a great showcase of VR tech, but its campaign is short and dull. Boneworks is even worse. And Beat Saber isn't going to make VR mainstream. It's a game that loses its lustre fast once the initial thrill of being in VR has passed.

We need more Arkham Shadows. Less Arizona Sunshines.

Does the combat only work by following on screen commands like a long qte section (for lack of better words)? Meh i don't like this style of combat, i prefer something more free style without indicators on screen.

It does, but it mimics the flow state of the flat games quite well. In those, you have to press the right buttons at the right times to counter and attack. The same thing applies here, but obviously implemented in a different way. But the same way you go from one thug to the next in the other games is recreated here as best as it can be. You can be smashing one punk into the ground while looking around for the next one to go after. It's pretty great.

Oh ok that make sense, i also hate free flow combat for the most part so it's understandable not liking this combat system aswell :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Are quest games able to be modded? I'm asking because I can fully imagine a modder attempting to de-VR this game much like HL: Alyx.

Even if you could the first issue is there are no Quest emulators are there? This game does not exist on anything but the headset itself, so you'd need to own the headset to run the game on, then I guess mod it and play it through the flat shared screen output, afaik.

Alyx is one of the best games but it's a one and done deal. I spent more time playing Pistol Whip during that time. I simply liked that game more.

I judge what my favorite games are based on the fun I had with them and time spent on it (replayability), not graphics, story or immersion. It may be reductive to some but It's what works for me.

I know after beating Arkham's campaign, I'm going to spend much more time trying to master the challenge maps. That's where the real game begins.
