Batman v Superman Ultimate Cut |OT| - Men are still good (out now)

Seen the UC two times now and I'm surprised at the change of heart I know have, I really enjoyed both viewings (didn't enjoy the TC) there's still some issues but I like it overall, some of the things that were cut though, man the TC is a mess.

Finally gave this a watch. I really appreciate some of the added scenes, helped solve the editing issues I had with the movie before and fleshed out Clark's side of the story which was welcome. Same as with the theatrical cut though, I found the first half pretty boring and the second half solid popcorn entertainment. A consistent energy and tighter script would've done wonders. As it is, the UC is a definite improvement overall though.

Managed to finally watch the Ultimate Edition, it definitely improves the movie significantly and fills in a lot of plot holes from the theatrical version. The movie still has some flaws but they are now much smaller I feel. Superman
dying at the hands of Doomsday and we're only in the second movie
is still rubbish and a bad story decision in my opinion.

Jena Malone's character is somewhat wasted, but certainly helps to clean up that particular storyline. I think the little extra bits of story added here and there like fleshing out the desert scene, Lex's motivations, Superman rescuing victims from the bombings and so on really fill out the movie a bit more instead of just jumping from scene to scene.

I think I agree with some other posters in this thread is that this is what should have been released to cinemas.

Men might be good. But Snyder is not.

It's the same fucking movie. Those 30 added minutes change nothing about it for me. So if you didn't like it and are wondering about this cut, I suggest you forget about it.

Watching it again really cemented how awful most/all of this movie's ideas are to me. On a story level I really don't like anything about it.The actual SuperBat fight is probably what I hate the most. This Batman is the antithesis of what he's supposed to be. What a garbage character. It's a mystery to me that people praise Batffleck. I've never felt this strongly against an interpretation of Batman. And by the time Doomsday rolls around, I had mentally half-checked out, again, just like in the theaters.

Anyway, movie is still shit, and my expectations for Justice League and the rest of the DC movies are at an all time low. I actually wish I hadn't seen it, I was actually getting a bit hyped from the positive feedback JL was getting.

Okay, my two cents; I thought the TC was garbage and I agreed with Mark Kermode that watching it was a chore, rather than relaxing. So I decided to give it another chance with the UC, hearing that it makes it better, it's the version that should've been in theaters.

Yes, it's the better movie of the two. There were things cut from the TC that would've helped flesh out a lot of elements at play in the movie. Everything gets better in the UC; Lex Luthor, Superman hell even Batman and Alfred who were beyond superb in the TC, even THEY are better as characters in the UC. Everything, except the third act, which still feels like a race to getting the Trinity and JL-tease on screen as soon as possible.

That said, the UC is still a mess. There's no reason for Batman to go chasing the badguys after he tags them with the tracking device, Superman's personality is still about as deep as the cardboard displays they got in movie theatres of him, Lois Lane is still the damsel in distress trope and Cooper Anderson still sounds silly for mentioning that downtown Metropolis is empty because it's after business hours. The dream-sequence followed by Timetravel Flash is still confusing as hell and the infamous "Martha"-bit still feels forced, unnatural and silly.

Because the UC improves on a lot, it makes those elements that are not improved, a lot more bearable. It's still not a good movie, not by a long shot, but it's better than the TC and mostly on par with Man of Steel.

I have never it understood the complaint lois is a damsel in distress when she's the only character who doesn't have either a metric fuck tonne of money or superpowers. Plus they actually had her doing stuff other than juar get captured and had her be a competent investigative journalist. Thats more than other Lois Lanes did, or Mary Janes but at least Pepper Potts did stuff in Iron Man 3

Gets captured in Africa, gets captured and tossed off a building by Lex Luthor, gets trapped underneath the rubble when diving for the Spear of Destiny. 3 instances where Supes has to swoop in and save her. That's an average of once an hour. Even Liam Neeson's family doesn't get captured that often!
Yes, she's an actual investigative journalist in the UC, the bullet-storyline actually helped Lois Lane get some depth and also explains the lengths at which Lexcorp is going to setup Superman, but her main role in these movies is eye-candy and damsel-in-distress.

And it's not because of her lack of superpowers, Batman has no superpowers, Black Widow has no superpowers, Hawkeye has no superpowers, and they get by just fine without getting trapped in the damsel-in-distress-trope.

1) Batman is rich as fuck and has a lifetime of martial arts training
2) see above but remove rich
3) see above. Also didn't she get captured in Age of Ultron? Though to be fair they had to do that cos Scatlett Johannson was pregnant. Also regarding the spear, she risked her life to retrieve it. A lot of people criticised her for throwing it away and then retrieving it but if you found out your bf had one hell of an allergy to it it's not surprising she threw it away in hope of it being lost in the current forever.

I also like how you ignore my MaryJane example which would be the most 1-1 comparison and had to bring up Avengers. Better examples would be whoever the fuck Natalie Portman played in Thor, Agent Carter, Betty Ross, Karen Page

BW gets captured ONCE in 3 films. LL gets captured three times in 1. That's hardly comparitive is it? And yes, MJ is a useless tool only used for being the damsel in distress, but at least her capture in the first movie confronted Peter with a moral choice; save a traincart full of people or the woman he loves. And I'd like to reiterate; she doesn't get captured THREE TIMES in the same movie.

I can go over every unpowered comicbook character if you'd like, from Catwoman to agent Carter, through Riddler to Star-Lord, that doesn't change ANYTHING about the lack of importance that Lois Lane has in this movie.

And it could easily been fixed too. Lois Lane could've provided Superman/Clark Kent with moral guidance, provide him with a new perspective on things, but that would've required Superman to become more than a mopy old sog. Consider this; Alfred, in both the Nolanverse and the Snyderverse, acts as sounding board for Bruce, someone who offers him a mental challenge to the ideas he gets, about what Batman is, who and why. Lois Lane could EASILY fill that role, especially now that we've gone past the whole awkward "will they or won't they" thing and went straight to "yeah, they together, he's tapping that.". It's what couples do. They talk, they exchange ideas, and they offer guidance and support. Instead, Snyder has Kal-El visit his dead dad on the top of a mountain.

Let's see what Lois Lane's role in this film was: she investigated the bombing that would have proven Superman's innocence and proved that Lex was behind it all. Can you honestly say that's a minor thing? She threw away a spear that her bf was allergic too. She deduced Doomsday was Kryptonian by the fact it flew and fired red beams like Superman. Something a lot of the audience missed. She then risked her life to retrieve said spear when the fate of the world depended on it.

Also regarding providing Clark with moral guidance and Lois having a larger role: what was the dream sequence with Pa Kent?
Clark's phone call with his mum?
Superman going to the Senate hearing to hold himself to account?
Lois trying to explain the lead-lined bomb and it wasn't his fault for the whole Africa incident?
Hell I could add the debate with Perry White shows Superman's opinion on moral issues considering he'd rather do investigative journalism on the unaccountable mass-murdering vigilante of Gotham that the citizens of Gotham either live in fear off or have grown frighteningly comfortable with rather than a piece on a fight that broke out at a sportsmatch that would probably sell more papers. Daredevil season 1 talked about a similar thing where Ben urich would rather do investigative journalism related to the Kingpin whilst his boss would rather he'd do a piece on some bullshit story that reliably sells papers.

Came in with an open mind, forgetting how much dislike I had for the theater version. Unfortunately the UC just proves that the problems at hand can't be fixed by adding 30 min of pretty inconsequential footage. I was surprised by how underwhelming the photography is this time around.

Are we really comparing Lois Lane to fucking Black Widow? Really? I mean really? One is an investigative journalist and the other is a trained from childhood killing machine super spy. Totally valid comparison.

So, as someone who has yet to see the film and will be watching it for the first time when it comes out on disc in a few days, should I watch the theatrical cut first or should I just dive right into the extended cut? Sorry if this has been answered already, I'm avoiding reading much of the actual thread as to not read any spoilers.

might as well just watch the ultimate edition the first time. the theatrical cut is the same movie but it makes less sense because of certain plot-stuff being cut out of it.

and also the theatrical version was far more of a mess editing wise. you can literally tell where certain scenes were hacked up

I wanna check this out but the original cut was such a mess of a film and I don't know if I want to dedicate 3 hours of my day off to it.

yeah that trailer is amazing, best one for the film easily. i like how it paints lex and batman as the villains in the story. trailer is basically Superman vs. The World.

Finally was able to watch this film this afternoon . So as someone who actually enjoyed Man of Steel it bummed me out by how this film turned out . Loved how Bruce Wayne and Batman were depicted . The sense of obsession , cynicism, and brutality in both those characters were very compelling when Affleck was on screen. I also enjoyed Gal Gadots portrayal of Wonder Women , had a nice energy and played well of the scenes she was in with Afflecks Bruce Wayne.

Everything else in the movie was straight trash IMO . The focus on Lois Lane really drew me out of the film , not only do I think the character was focused on way too much during the film , I'm not sure why she's supposed to be the focus of so much of Supermans part of the story . She's was a very annoying character and watching the interaction between Clark Kent/ Superman with her as well was like watching really bad made for tv romance story . It was fine in Man of Steel when she became caught up in Zods plans , but the idea this character is still getting involved in these insidious global plans is eye rolling . Also the way Clark Kents mother is shoved into the story line had me cracking up , haha it was so forced and bizarre I really don't understand how that survived script rewrites. Lex Luthor and Jessie Eisenbergs portrayal seemed like he was in his own movie, the overacting was just bad . I get what they were going for but it almost seemed like it belonged in Batman Forever or something lol.

Overall it was a very weird story that Batman vs Superman chose to tell. I don't get why they made the film have such a complicated narrative and why all these side characters were used in telling the story that I felt we could've gotten told just fine mainly through Batman and Superman . I felt like the film really kept taking a lot of focus off Batman and Superman in favor of showing these side characters and their boring ass relation to the plot that seemed forced into being intertwined with the overall narrative . Would've been a much better film if Batman and Superman had much clearer stories and simply just delt with them . Every time those two were on screen it was a fun and enjoyable film . They really over complicated this film for seemingly no reason other than to hamfist Lois Lane and Lex Luthers stories into the film in the worst ways .

Finally watched the movie after a long wait. Missed the TC and only watched the EC version. I loved all the old Batmans aside from "& Robin". Hell, I even waited 8 hours+ on line to catch the imax opening of TDK. I thought the movie was just meh.

There were a lot of things I liked and didn't like. I never read the comics or graphic novels so I wasn't sure if these things were translated from the comics.

I just don't think Superman's world meshes well with Batman's. It might be because I've been so into the Nolanverse that it just didn't click with me.

I liked Affleck's take on Batman. Both as Bruce and in the cape. It wasn't the best Batman but we've had worse. A more brutal, idgaf, older, wiser Batman is something I can get behind.

Those weird bat dreams were kinda random but I thought it was a nice touch.

I'm glad they didn't completely revisit each superheroes' past. I liked the introduction of the JL guys via the Lex's videos. I never really knew anything about Superman lore so never knew Lex was so sinister.

I thought Eisenberg was good but I really have no idea what Lex is like so I'm not sure if it was an accurate performance.

I thought Gal Gadot was used well and loved the score behind her entrance and fight.

I really hated that whole Doomsday (?) arc they went into for the 2nd half of the movie. It just completely ruined it for me and seemed pretty stupid. Once again that could me not liking the superman world meshing with the more realistic setting Gotham. It just seemed silly and absolutely unnecessary. I definitely would have enjoyed it a lot more with more Batman vs Superman stuff.

New Alfred was pretty awesome.

Sad to say it just didn't do it for me. Seemed like the most forgettable Batman movie I've ever watched which is sad. Expecting the solo Batman flick to be good though.

Why would Lex give his mercenaries distinct bullets that can be easily traced back to him?

I always figured the unique bullets had something to do with framing superman, I.e. They melted away under the heat of the flamethrower or left less visible wounds or something.

So, picked up the blu ray this morning and watched it as soon as I got home. This is the definitive version of the film and really improves it more than I could've imagined (I enjoyed the theatrical cut, but the editing was jarring). Every sub plot was fleshed out, nearly every scene that was added served a purpose, it was great.

Lex Luthor is still terrible though, he really brings the film down. I loved everything else about it. Affleck is the GOAT.

WTF? I've waited to rent the Ultimate Cut legit and it's not even available to rent.

Who tf would WANT to rent the theatrical cut? Even the biggest BvS apologists aren't going to pay to watch that again. What a load of horseshit.

Watched it recently, ultimate cut that is.
There is a great movie in there, but there are too many flaws.

-Batman car chase was just too much for me to accept. Biggest issue i had with the movie.
-Superman having problem with Batman...ok?
-Knightmare was forced and... it was a dream/vision/visit from Flash? Made not sense and the Flash looked terrible with whatever he had on.
-Wondy checking email videos. Cyborg part looked like TV show, Aquaman was pure cringe. Also forced, i wish they kept it simple. Just showing logos, and not clicking on them would have been perfect in my opinion.
-Lex, i really didn`t like his take on it. Ledger`s Joker poor imitation.
-Martha moment didn`t work. The idea is good, but it needed more work on it or, maybe Snyder just could not bring it on screen properly.

Things i liked:
-Music is great, and although not fan of WW theme (maybe because of the instrument they used) it worked great when combined with Superman music. Also "beautiful lie" is..beautiful.
-The story. Part with the Superman doing different hero stuff and people on TV talking about him was perfect.
-Snyder`s vision of this world, visually and action especially.
-Action was better than i expected. Really good.

I enjoyed it, but it is another missed oportuinty for something great. Same thing like with MOS but much worsein this case.

I went 4K on the target sale for future use. One note is that the normal blu ray that comes with it is only the theater cut. The vudu code is supposed to be both versions though. So I am going to watch the Vudu ultimate version until I get a 4K player.

Pretty mad about this but it's my fault for not looking I guess. Bought the 4K one as I have a 4K tv and will be getting a 4K player soon but didn't notice the blu Ray was only theatrical. Oh well. Guess it's vudu for me

I had already ordered when I noticed, but Vudu HDX streams are pretty good quality so it will work until I can play the 4K version. Pretty stupid they did it that way though.

Ya the youtube review says it. Presumably the Warner Bros people thought that the ultimate experience of this movie would be to watch the Ultimate Cut in 4K. If somebody still wants to know how the film was presented in theaters then the 1080p Theatrical Cut is going to quench their curiosity (but that is not the ultimate experience of the film that's why it is presented in 1080p and not 2160p)

and the prequel landed in 4K today

Holy shit, that was awesome! I liked the theatrical cut (not loved, but thought it was pretty good besides the editing and lack of proper narrative and motives for character actions), but the Ultimate Cut is really, really good. Like top 5 comic book movie good.

For me, there's:

Road to Perdition
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
Dredd
And now probably this.I honestly can't think of anything else to put up there right now.

Total 180 on editing, pacing, story beats and motives, etc.
