Some tidbits from the interview:

Before beginning Batman: Year 100, I had a long time to think over ideas for this project - before I even had a title or a firm premise or anything, I knew I could do a good Sci-Fi Batman. I don't think there's really been one, has there? I thought it'd be interesting to fast forward 100 years ahead from when Batman first appeared to 2039. It seemed so natural - we have Batman: Year One, so I thought, how about Batman: Year One-Hundred?"

"I wanted to find an athletic approach to Batman," Pope said. "I wanted to show him as a physical person. My Batman sweats, grunts, eats, and sleeps. He gets tired. He's human. And he's also on almost every page. He doesn't just show up for the third act and tell us who did it. I approached this as how would a man like this really be the Batman? How would he pull it off? We know he's got genius level brains, he's a perfectly conditioned warrior, he's got an unlimited expense account. He'd also have to have a hell of a sense of drama of theater. He's a man with wealth and taste. I try to play Batman as Howard Hughes with the brains of Thomas Edison and the body of David Beckham, pretending he's Nosferatu."

To me, the classic Batman is the most visually interesting and the most believable - the little gloves, the gray jersey, the mask with the severe 'V' shaped design cut across his cheekbones - the strange, scary slits for eyes - that kind of thing from his original appearances.

"He has real boots on," Pope stated. "There's no generic foot shape on my guy. a Ken doll foot, you know. Generic superhero foot. Feet are hard to draw, I know. I also sometimes stick the foot off panel to avoid having to figure out how to make a realistic looking foot. I don't know how others draw Batman's boots, but mine look like actual boots."

Um.. Hello, McFly? Doesn't Batman Beyond ring a bell? Make like a tree and get with the program.

I'll save you the trouble, since I'm pretty sure you have absolutely no idea who Paul Pope is. Let's just say he's not the kind of guy who sits around making sure he's seen every DC cartoon, or read JLA issue, etc.

I believe the term you're searching for is "art fag". :p

I don't care.

The fact is that Beyond does exist, and it's pretty darn good. It may not be canon, but neither is his story. While his work may indeed be good, that admittedly out-of-context quote is kind of off-putting - it gives the impression that he isn't aware of all of the iterations of the franchise, which I hope he would be, as he's contributing to it. I don't care if he's seen all of the episodes of every incarnation of Batman, but I do think he should at least acknowledge WB Animation's work on Beyond.

Batman Beyond doesn't have crud to do with crud. That wasn't Batman, it was a kid being Batman's version of Iron Man. It was an awesome show, but Terry and The Bat are so different. Terry doesn't have genius level brains, high level martial skills, or an iron will, etc etc. Pope's sci fi world will be more detailed than the animated series was., and his Batman, will be THE Batman. I guess that's why he says Batman hasnt been done in a sci fi world.

Ah, cool. Nice pages. I've been kind of slow to get with the Paul Pope thing, but I finally got Heavy Liquid a couple months ago, and I just bought 100% yesterday... so now I'm fully converted - I'll buy basically anything with his name on it.

Between this and the new Darwyn Cooke project, DC's got some good superhero stuff going on.

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
Paul Pope or not, this theme has been presented before(Batman in a US police state)... This doesn't get me worked up in the least... but I'll at least pick up the first issue to see if it has any appeal to me.
