So I checked some Best Buys near Portland, OR, for Bayonetta. At the Washington Square location I found a blank space with a title card for the game. I had an associate look up Bayonetta and he said there were 3 copies in stock, 10 at the Tualatin and Beaverton locations, and 7 at the Tanasbourne. This guy was good enough to check all the likely places the missing copies might have been, including the back room, but he came up empty handed. BALLS. I wasn't as disappointed as I might have been, though, because I found a nice deal on Assassin's Creed 2, which I'd planned to buy ASAP after Bayonetta.
I called all the stores the associate named and they all gave me variations of the same two answers: "Yes, we have Bayonetta in stock and you most emphatically cannot have it," and "That game isn't released until the 5th. That's all we can tell you." No one I spoke to was willing to check the shelves. After a fruitless check-in at the closest GameStop I went to the Beaverton Best Buy, figuring I might have better luck if I inquired in person. Tons of games there, in a sprawling arrangement of shelves that nearly swallows you as you walk in. I saw a lot of good stuff, but no Bayonetta. I got someone to look in the back room and he confirmed there were 10 copies of the game. He refused to sell one to me no matter how hard I pushed.
I wasn't in the mood to check the other Best Buys. For the crime of living on the west coast, I have no choice but to wait for Bayonetta's official street date. Yay. I guess Gamestop's getting my $60 on the 5th after all. At least I have a great game to keep myself occupied in the meantime.
