Egyptian women in full veil, or niqab
The niqab has become increasingly popular among Egypt's Muslim radicals

Egypt's highest Muslim authority has said he will issue a religious edict against the growing trend for full women's veils, known as the niqab.

Sheikh Mohamed Tantawi, dean of al-Azhar university, called full-face veiling a custom that has nothing to do with the Islamic faith.

Although most Muslim women in Egypt wear the Islamic headscarf, increasing numbers are adopting the niqab as well.

The practice is widely associated with more radical trends of Islam.

The niqab question reportedly arose when Sheikh Tantawi was visiting a girls' school in Cairo at the weekend and asked one of the students to remove her niqab.

The Egyptian newspaper al-Masri al-Yom quoted him expressing surprise at the girl's attire and telling her it was merely a tradition, with no connection to religion or the Koran.

Good, I was always against the niqab and Tantawi is pretty influential so I hope a lot of people will follow his lead.

correct about everything
i can imagine that those might be pretty hot in egypt (or are they made of some special fabric?), but dressing up as a ninja (in a skirt) is still pretty cool. also, you could probably pass as a woman. swell.

Man, I can't imagine walking around in freakin' Egypt wearing that get up. It must be broiling.

Generally, large robes that are worn in hot places are designed to maximize airflow. It can actually be significantly cooler than walking around with exposed skin.

Counter intuitive, I guess. Still, I don't know if I could take being a ninja in a sea of other ninjas.

A tent is often cooler than the campsite. Shade. Which is why Arabs wear headscarves and robes.

However, making them black defeats some of that. They absorb more sunlight and heat. Anyway, I tend to think it's cruel and barbaric and mysoginistic.

I am in support of covering up fat and ugly women when they go out in public. This is something that America needs to look into as well. The burqu is definitely a step up from the disgusting stuff I see people wearing in Walmart.

Though hot and attractive women should of course be forbidden from any of that stuff.

IIRC there are two principles at work. The first one is that moving creates some airflow, but the second one is that a temperature differential creates airflow. This means that black causes the air to cycle around, cooling you down. None of the desert wear is that impractical.

This press release from Hizb ut-Tahrir is a great response..

On Monday October 5th, while visiting a girls’ high school in Cairo, Sheikh Mohamed Sayyed Tantawi, head of Al-Azhar University, Egypt, ordered a school girl to remove her niqab and stated that he would seek a ban on the face veil in all schools affiliated to Al-Azhar.

His remarks have given a ‘green light’ to efforts by various Western governments such as France, Holland, and Belgium, to ban the niqab in their own countries – an action that many Muslims recognise as just one of a cohort of desperate underhand attempts to push them towards secular values and away from Islam. The day after his comments, the Northern League – the far right political party and member of Silvio Berlusconi’s coalition - proposed legislation aimed at also banning the face veil in Italy.

Dr. Nazreen Nawaz, Women’s Media Representative of Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain commented, “Sheikh Tantawi is no stranger to playing fiddle to the tune of Western secular governments. His track record includes supporting the French hijab ban, advising Muslim girls to take off their hijabs to comply with this law, and shaking hands with Israeli President Shimon Peres – a butcher whose hands are soaked with the blood of thousands of Palestinians.”

“Against a backdrop of European governments who are attempting to stem the rise of Islam in their societies and coerce their Muslim communities to embrace Western values through laws such as hijab and niqab bans, his words have provided ammunition to their agenda. Furthermore, his latest comments have given succour to the propaganda war of Western governments against Islam and the Muslim woman’s dress. Therefore, rather than asking young Muslim girls to remove their veils, it is he who should hide his face in shame.”

“He reacts angrily to women wearing niqab but is indifferent to his government’s license for female tourists to parade half-naked in the holiday resorts of Egypt. He uses Islam to argue that Muslim women should uncover their faces but is muted over the secular rule of the tyrannical Mubarak regime that is trying its best to drive Islam out of society - including imprisoning and torturing those who advocate Islamic governance.”

“Tantawi and his likes who provide a pay-as-you-go, on-demand fatwa service to endorse and rubber stamp the actions of autocratic rulers and Western governments, have no credibility amongst the Muslim masses. Western leaders should therefore not be fooled into believing that edicts from such government scholars will convince Muslims to turn away on their deeply held Islamic beliefs and embrace corrupt, flawed, morally deficient secular values. If this is their hope – it is they, not Muslim women who need to remove that veil from their eyes.”

Actually what is the religious justification for this? I always thought it had something to do with keeping men from lusting after women, but then I moved to Indonesia and found that it was mainly fat old women who wore the hijab/jilbab, so I know that my intuition was wrong because no one would ever lust after them. Can someone explain?

What the fuck are you talking about? White reflects solar radiation. Black absorbs it.
