Beat Feel the Magic - Impressions

Beat the game.. it took me 5 hours all the way through, but I played nonstop and died relatively little...

honestly, worth every penny.. I said it about Luigi's Mansion and I'll say it about this. It isn't about the length bu the fun.

The minigames are varied.. I mean yes it's a lot of tapping the screen, but what did you expect. :P

it would ahve been nice to have some dpad or action button involvement, but even without it there was really no repitition.

the end was great.. last boss, final boss, magic heart

overall I give this 9.1/10..

yes on the unlockables.. ala DOAXVB.. in other words you get new outfits and hairdos for the woman to wear (which is what you also get for having Sega GBA games inserted).

like 80ish lockables total it seems.. or something..

replay.. umm.. yeah, just because some of the stuff is so damn fun.. unfortunately there isn't really a "score" for the minigames, but onee you beat a game it is playable from the main menu.. I also unlocked hard mode by beating the game.

the game is very fun.. I will give hard a shot and see how hard it is.. if it is a little harder, I will definitely go through again.. if it is a ton harder, we'll have to see...

So I've been playing around with this for like an hour or so, and then went to mess around with the options.
You can choose the Japanese mode, and since I'm such a dork, I obviously did. It changes the title-screen to the Japanese version, but I thought something was weird, so I switched back to the english real quick, and sure enough, in the Japanese title-screen she's not wearing her bathing suit.
What a weird little change.

Yeah, the covers differ in the same way.

It almost makes me wonder if there are any other differences. I'm gonna have to see if I can find them.

I am up to the
nightmare
level. I guess I am close to the end, and so far I loved this game. I loved the minigames where u had to blow into the mic port to blow out the candle, or to move your sailboat. I did like the Monocycle, and I liked some of the boss battles.

Great game overall.

Yeah, the sailboat one rocked... I wasn't really impressed w/ the candle one, so it was a pleasant surprise.

Nintendo should incorporate this into Wind Waker DS. We'd all get dizzy trying to navigate. :lol

my favorite game was.. hmmmm... actually, the last one.. I won't ruin it for those who haven't gotten to it yet, but it was interesting AND really it was very endearing.. the last game is what threw the game over a 9 for me... my second favorite would be a tie between bulls and parachutes... I am a computer and handheld geek, so number pad and tapping stuff is fine by me.

I have to read the manual.. what is maniac mode? you just dress her up or something? I got sonic's head and puyo's head in maniac mode (from my GBA games). Guess I should read the manual...

and the graphics on this game are outstanding.. nightmare is extremely trippy.. the cinematics rule... GOTY (well, handheld GOTY at least).

Is
nightmare
the last level in the game??

I just finished tonight too. It's a bundle of laughs and the only complaint I have is that the difficulty is all over the place. That damned Snakes game, for example, is way harder than some of the stuff that comes later. I loved the games involving touching the girl - she makes such cute noises. You can really go to town with that later when you unlock the sound test :D

Got the Sonic, Chao, Puyo and Nights hats, but I can't unlock the Ulala hat for some reason. The hats are supposed to come from Sonic Advance 1, 2 and 3, Sonic Pinball Party and Puyo Puyo Fever, but Sonic Advance 2 didn't unlock anything for me :(

I love the whole "Love It" / "Rub It" / "Rabbit" pun going on.

It's too bad you cannot record a 60 second mix. But speaking of recording...

Everyone likes the voices that yell "Rub it!" on the title screen, but can you do better? Press down and Y to silence the music and record 1.5 seconds of whatever you want. It'll then be played with the "Rub it!" Press down and X to play it whenever, and use left and right to modify its speed. This can only be done on the title screen, and isn't saved.
Anyone try this? I can't get it to work.

It works. Hold down and you should see the microphone on the screen. Check page 29 of the manual for better written instructions.

Snakes seemed hard, until I realized that you don't play it like Goldfish or the other rub/push games -- you simply control the dude by moving him with the stick.

Nightmare was the bitch, though - stages 1 and 2 were easy and fun again, but then having to play Plant last, with its faulty controls that meant unintended deaths, and having to do the whole thing over again, that wasnt fun.

how do you get past the dancing part? I can't tell if I have the timing down or what but I can't even get past the first "dance" they have you do.

On the bottom screen, you should see a beat counter... you need to dance in time with the beat (think of it as a 4 to the floor style beat). Wait for the bar to start anew, and then go. If you've ever played Space Channel 5, it's exactly like how that game's played.

Finally beat the second unicycle stage today after about 20 tries :P And now I'm up to the Nightmare stages. I only tried it once so far, hopefully I can beat those soon and finish this game, so I can spend more time on Mario.

BTW, I'm loving Mario now that I've switched to the D-Pad controls. I started with the thumbstrap, then moved to the stylus and pressing Up to jump, Right to punch... but now I'm on the D-Pad and it's a lot better for me.

I enjoyed Feel the Magic quite a bit for a couple of days, and I especially love the visual aesthetic and the sound effects/music. Overall, though, I don't really think it holds up very well -- particularly after having spent a couple of days with Sawaru Made in Wario, which is basically the same but with 15x as many games and many cool unlockables to play with. Especially on my second (hard mode) play-through of FtM, I found myself going "oh no, not THIS game.." way too often, rather than "Yes, I LOVE this one!" After passing most of the games, I felt little to no desire to play them again. It was especially glaring to me when a couple of friends came over and wanted to check the game out. I wanted to pick out a couple mini-games for them to play, but scrolling through the list I found that the vast majority of the games conjured up memories of annoyance rather than pure fun. Obviously there are some exceptions (I especially like all of the boss battles, parachute, bus stop, and a couple others), but overall they just didn't seem that great to me after playing them once or twice.

I'm still happy that I bought and played through the game, but I think it would've made a much weaker impact on me if I'd been able to play Wario at the same time. Games like Sailboat seem really cool in Feel the Magic, but once you see that Wario Ware has about 20 creative variations on that same idea (including one that's nearly identical to it - this goes for most of FtM's games), it loses a bit of its lustre.
