Beer |OT|

Is 120 2012 any better than 2011? I thought it was a boozy mess of apricots and acetone. I can't really call it an Imperial IPA, but it's not good enough to be a barleywine.

Way too much hype around this beer thanks to the Brewmasters episode focusing on it.

Do you guys store your 120-minute IPA in a fridge, or at room temp?

For those of you not familiar with the competition: It's an annual competition held a couple of months before the LA County Fair, open to licensed breweries and brewpubs only (hence the "commerical" part of the title). Expert judges taste a wide variety of beers (ales, lagers, stouts, porters, pilsners, bocks, etc) and medals are handed out accordingly. Each beer may be entered in only one category. Once the winners are announced, the Fair will reach out to certain breweries/brewpubs in order to purchase some of their award winning beers to sell at the fair (that's where I come in!). These beers are not to be confused with the everyday run-of-the-mill beers on sale throughout the fair (Bud Light, Coors, MGD, etc). These award winners are only sold at the beer garden located in the Marketplace Pavilion (which also hosts a wine garden). You can purchase a single beer for a few bucks or get a sample of 4 (or so) for about $11 iirc. They have about 15 different beers on any given day and they swap them out about once a week. That's a good reason to purchase the unlimited fair pass (as I visit about 3 times every year). Thats said, if you are in Los Angeles between Aug. 31st and Sept. 30th, do yourself a favor and visit the fair. You'll be happy you did. Lastly, they also host the End Of Summer Concert Series, where you can get decent seats for as little as $25.

I can vouch for this one. Around St. Patrick's Day, my local beer stop had this on the tap wall. Ended up filling two growlers with the stuff; it's good.

I've had a number of the other mentions, and pretty much all of the Sam Adams stuff on there.

Stone's Sublimely Self-Righteous is rich and delicious.

Just finished a few bottles of carslberg export. Classy.

Anyway my favourite two beers are:

Snakes Bite
Black Sheep

Wychwood is one of my favorite breweries. I've never had their Snake's Bite (though I've made plenty of them myself - Strongbow and Harp with a dash of black currant!) but love Hobgoblin, King Goblin, and Ginger Beard.

Hobgoblin is great! I'm also a fan of Goliath. Never tried Ginger Beard though, will buy a bottle next time I'm doing a beer run.

I bought and set up a kegerator a few weeks ago. Because of my work schedule and some carbonation issues that took us a while to pin down, this is the first time I've been able to enjoy it. I've got my amber ale in there and it is so good.
740mR.jpg

We've got an IPA fermenting that should be ready in three weeks. I'm so excited to be done bottling beer. Kegs are so much easier, and they are ready to drink so much faster. This kegerator is the first big step I've taken since I started brewing this time last year. We are hoping to go all grain within the month and to start brewing a lot bigger batches.

Congrats, mate! I *love* kegging. It takes a bunch of fiddly steps out of brewing by far, even if running a keg isn't always the easiest thing in the world - I totally don't regret doing it. It's a damn nice feeling to pour a glass of *your* beer from *your* tap.

What sort of all-grain brewing setup are you aiming for? I've done a few BIAB batches & love it for its simplicity, and it's impressed my decade-long brewing buddy for how easy it is.

I've found a little liquor store here that carries 750ml bottles of lots of good stuff, including selections from Unibroue and Ommergang. They are all under $10 too, some of them as low as $5. Good stuff.

Tonight I got a 750ml bottle of Don de Dieu from Unibroue.
As with Ephemere, I feel that the smell is far better than the taste. The smell is amazingly complex and enough to make you swoon, but compared to that, the actual taste is a bit of a let down. Too heavily carbonated for me as well, but definitely not a bad beer. Very easy to drink, deceptively so at 9% ABV. I prefer Unibroue's other offerings though.

edit: the more I sit here sipping this the more it's growing on me. I generally like darker/heavier beers but this one is starting to gain my appreciation.

I'm sorta in the dark on all grain to a point where I don't know exactly which setup to go after. I'm waiting on two more paychecks to start buying the equipment to switch over.

I moved here from Georgia, so it's quite a change. I took a couple of friends to a concert in Atlanta, and they were amazed to see Stone and DFH (what they call "liquor store beer") sold at the local Kroger.
Yeah. I know Kroger here in Kentucky has Dogfish Head. Basic Stone stuff too, probably.

Wait...you can order beer? And it gets delivered to you. Teach me how to do this.
There are online shops that ship within Germany, yep! It's my first time doing that but I wouldn't know how to get those beers any other way. ;)

Great beer, but slightly expensive to drink regularly. It's a nice treat every once in a while, though.

Where do you live?

i live in orange county, calif. i mean we've got bevmo and a few other places to get some beer, but it's not really a beer mecca or anything. i tried some bitburger last night and it wasn't bad, but not overwhelmingly great. i'd drink it again.

This summer pilsner from Brutal Brewing, called Beervana - Summer Edition, was a pleasant surprise

i'll see if there's anywhere here that carries Brutal.

I needed a beer over which to reflect upon the day's events.
I planned on Three Philosophers but I saw this for $8 and have been wanting to try it for a while. At first it wouldn't ring up because the bar code is painted onto the bottle but eventually the secrets of the Duchess were revealed.

Anybody live near Champaign or Normal, Illinois? I was recently at Destihl in Normal and they had a fairly strongly dry-hopped hefeweizen that was damned good. I'm usually not all that impressed by their beers, but this one surprised me. I tried to get the recipe out of them, but they were pretty tight-lipped about it.

I don't suppose any BeerGAF has the skinny?

Picked up a growler of Twelve Bar Brews Supertonic Black IPA and a bottle of Deschutes Conflux No. 1 today. Supertonic is pretty enjoyable, I'll be saving Conflux for after the growler is done tomorrow.
