Fuck, I didn't realise how white-washed Casca was when I watched it. Really makes me not want to watch and support this bullshit.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
That's why I said "pretty much" and not just straight "everyone", and that "pretty much" was in reference to you, since you're the only one who seems to like it.

[edit]

And even if you like it, you gotta admit this is a terrible way to introduce someone to Berserk.
lol, ok

I do agree on the second point

Maaaaan, that CGI is really jarring. It was fine and not as obvious in the Golden Age Arc films. Even Ajin and Knights of Sidonia handled the style much better by comparison. Maybe it was the attempt at an illustrated look that reminded me so much of Valkyria Chronicles that threw me off? That, and the stiffness of the characters made it hard to watch. Puck going from stiff character model to comical SD blob was just as jarring. First time it happened, I was like "Wtf is that?"

I guess other than that, it was ok. Would have liked it if they opened with a traumatized Casca in the cave, fearful of Guts, and him getting his arm/sword... Or at least mentioned kept some of the gore. Oh well... At least it's more Berserk and not a third retelling of golden arc.

That Kotaku article sure is something.
It’s no secret that, even for 1997, the original Berserk anime looked bad. Its color palate was drab, its shading lazy.
And in favor of the laconic writing of the 1997 Berserk, this year’s first episode captures the spirit of the manga, which is at times overwritten.

That Kotaku article sure is something.

Berserk 1997 is still the definitive anime adaptation of the manga. It's just too bad that the same team couldn't continue on it. Everything was perfect. :(

Yep, would have loved more of it back in the day.

Fuck, I didn't realise how white-washed Casca was when I watched it. Really makes me not want to watch and support this bullshit.

Yep, just one of the many reasons why the first Berserk anime is the best:

Also, screw Kotaku.

Saw the OP, disliked the music, disliked what it looked like, Schierke was nowhere to be found, not a good start.

Well, Schierke does appear in the episode itself for a little bit, along with Flora and Ivalera.

...not worth sitting through the episode for it, and this is coming from someone who didn't completely dislike it.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
We really need a rich berserk fan to get involved with the franchise because it keeps getting the low budget treatment.

A part of me thinks Miura either doesn't give a shit about the adaptations and the original Berserk was a lucky fluke. Apparently he was working on the Musou game in part and might have been one of the reasons for his last break. We shall see if that is any better quality. It could also be a case where Miura just isn't very good at designing and creating things outside of manga so his decisions aren't the wisest. I'm assuming a combination of all of the above.

Also be careful what you wish for, look at what Seth Rogan and crew turned the Preacher comics into.

I thought everyone liked Preacher (I know jack shit about it lol)

Heres hoping that the animation was just bad in the first few episodes like it was for the golden age movies (where that mean i gotta wait till the end for it to look good.) Casca looking white otoh needs to go asap... or is this a ploy for them to sell better BRs which actually look amazing?(kinda like toei)

Critics eat it the fuck up but its a poorly paced mess in a lot of ways that is destroying the characters and just making up huge chunks of the story because they didn't have the budget to really do the start of the comics justice amongst wanting to set things up better. Its mixed but like this anime there is a lot more bad than good. Worse its from supposed super fans who seem to have little grasp of what made the comic good. I'm going to keep watching and hope they turn it around but there were so many really poorly made decisions.

Edit: Its not just comic fans, a lot of people with no experience with the comic are pretty befuddled a lot of times over what's going on.

But there wasn’t any sexual violence. One of Berserk 1997’s first scenes features a girl openly harassed at a tavern forced to lick spilled wine off a table. Guts, predictably, saves her. It’s dull. Perhaps this series’ writers have caught up with the times–the corresponding tavern seen in this episode sees Guts saving a young, aspirant mercenary boy from a similar pack of thugs.
Seems liked she missed the scene where the one girl gets dragged into an alley.

Also not sure how Guts saving a kid is less dull. The manga did it so much better where you weren't sure if he just saved puck or if he wanted attack the thugs anyway to get information

Whitewashing Casca is just ARGH. I hope there's an outcry against this and they show her the proper way, with considerably darker skin.

Welp, I made a huge mistake rewatching the '97 anime right before this first new episode.

Ironically, while rewatching it, I thought "wow, I forgot how low budget this show was!" Quite often, the show had to resort to panning around still images to represent action scenes, and sometimes the backgrounds looked like they were watercolored on a 3x5 index card and zoomed in. 99% of the show had only shading tone for moving characters and objects.

But that show was saved by absolutely ace direction, a phenomenal soundtrack, and damn good drawing (even if the coloring or amount of animation frames weren't amazing). What was drawn was drawn well, and there were a number of striking and memorable painted still shots.

And this first new episode didn't have any of those saving qualities, unfortunately. It felt like a long trailer of random scenes stitched together with boring camera angles. I have not read the manga, so I'll have to watch a few more episodes to see if the show can build a good story, but I probably won't stick with it. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole season is paced like a highlights reel of the manga.

Was excpecting this to be shit. The whitewashing really cements that fact.

I'll be sticking to the manga, unless they can give this franchise an adaption it deserves. This is not it.

I'll give the series another ep or two. The hope remains this ep was only so shitty because they had to rush through a bunch of stuff because they started a new series and skipped an arc at the same time.

Guys I'm playing the lottery so that I can win and pay to have a 6 season anime created by Madhouse.
I haven't watched this new one yet. I don't think I'll be watching it either after all this negative feedback.

Kotaku are complete idiots when it comes to anime, who knew?

Richard Einbess isn't that bad, and has some pretty good insights, but this writer has taste so bad that not even Crazy Diamond can fix it. And LOL if she thinks no women are going to get kidnapped or raped in the rest of the show

Was he praising the first 13 episodes of SAO? Alot of people did at the time, and looked stupid in retrospect.

The article was written about the first half of the first season. Still, calling anything about Sword Art Online smart is... highly dubious. And to say "If there is one problem with Sword Art Online, it's that it is overly tragic." - er, really?

Oh good god stop watching this. You are going to ruin the series. At least go back and watch the 3 movies or the original anime. You are literally missing like the first quarter of the story and jumping in now, quality aside, is a bad idea as a lot of things are not going to make sense.

You should watch the '97 anime. Everyone should. I can't imagine anyone not wanting to read the manga after that.

What the heck at them making Casca even lighter (again). Really pathetic.. The fuck is with that seriously? The first episode was absolutely horrid. I question the taste of anyone that enjoyed it

Woah don't make this your entry into the series. Plus it also spoils the biggest twists in the manga

I guess I'll ignore this for now then.

I like the idea/background of the show so I'll check out the better material.

Thanks for the input.

Saw the OP, disliked the music, disliked what it looked like, Schierke was nowhere to be found, not a good start.

The I come here and all I am hearing are bad shit, like poor animation, sound, music, weird pacing, low budget, whitewashing...

Yeah I think I'll just stick to the manga.

It's even worse when I saw it.

At least it's entertaining, that's something I guess...

This is probably one of the worst adaptations I have ever seen. The CGI is so jarring. The show is actually hard to watch because of it. It's not even good CGI, it's a fucking mess. The CGI does not fit the style of Berserk and I can't stress that enough. Puck's VA is absolutely awful.

I thought this was going to be at the beginning of the manga because I don't remember this at all.

Your better off watching the 90s series than this crap. I'm so dissappointed

2/10

I might not even bother with the next episode.

How can Kotaku say there's no sexual violence when Casca's rape is in the opening? You'll see it every single week.

I feel like in a week Kotaku is going to have an article talking about how shitty the white washing is. Maybe from the same author as that article.

While the 97 anime isn't perfect, it's music is top class and drives the emotion. The lack of gore, as well as some of the characters like Puck, Skull Knight, etc I'm ok with because it told the golden age arc so well.

He gets a rushed as fuck, condensed movie trilogy that softens the impact of one of the best arcs from the manga, Tecmo Koei instead of From Software, years of being stuck on a boat, and now a shitty, amateur hour anime adaptation after decades of waiting.

Guts just can't catch a break.

I can't even meme "it's better than nothing" because at least with nothing there was always the hope that someday we might get a good adaptation that follows the manga from beginning to end with the same amount of care David Productions puts into Jojo. Now that dream is dead and all we have to show for it is this crap.

If I want to re-experience the story guess I'll just reread the manga. It's about time anyway.

I was always doubting it would turn out good but I thought I might see some cool scenes from the manga animated such as everything skull knight from the movies but even that seems unlikely. I fear how they are going to butcher the sword graveyard scene.

starting rereading Berserk and I don't remember a goddamn thing from the Blackswordsman arc, Guts can be quite the dickbag.

Watched this last night with my brother, this show does not look good visually at all lol. But I still found it to be pretty watchable. Just seeing this stuff getting animated feels a bit novel, but man do I wish it looked better. Or hell, at-least increase the framerate on the CGI, Christ. Maybe I should try watching this shit with motion interpolation on hahaha.

The whitewashing of Casca is probably my biggest gripe at this point. That shit really isn't cool at all, and is very frustrating.

The first half of the first season of Sword Art Online was still stupid as shit and was clearly written by someone who had no real understanding of video game mechanics (or really much of anything else, for that matter).

The fact that it was less stupid than what came after it doesn't really absolve that article of anything.

As for this Berserk series, I was probably going to check it out for the sake of pure curiosity, but whitewashed Casca pretty much kills any remaining ember of interest for me. I really don't understand why it's such a difficult ask for somebody to just adapt Berserk properly.
