To be fair, this DOES look like Beavis&Butthead ;-)

At the very least it seems this new adaptation has brought a whole new burst of exposure to people. I just happen to check Amazon and Berserk Vol. 1 is currently the 8th best selling Manga, being #1 in Horror Manga and #3 in Fantasy Manga.

This actually makes me feel pretty good. The source material deserves more attention.

I still need to complete my collection. I had my hopes and dreams dashed a few years back when a huge chunk of my collection (both English and Japanese versions) were destroyed due to a water leak.

I have some thoughts on ep 1.

Context: Been reading the manga since...2003 I think. So 13 years. I think I watched the first anime in 2002.

Good things:

-The atmosphere captures a pretty good, dark mood. It's got the right vibe.
-Soundtrack is decent so far. Not Hirasawa level, but again, captures the right type of feel (although I do feel Sagisu's best work is probably behind him).
-The 2D animation that is there is pretty decent.
-Although they're skipping tons of material, they did a decent job of coming up with a first episode that introduces Puck, Isidoro and Farnese, while illustrating the life of Guts as the black swordsman
-Voice acting is decent
-Some of the 3D modelling is alright.
-Right level of violence for a new Berserk series. I mean, you can't really do Berserk without it.

Bad Things
-The majority of the CGI animation is crappy.
-The worst moments of the CG are worse than even the movies. Puck's model on closeup is abysmal and the spider apostle thing was like a bad joke.
-Some of the music seems a bit cheesy

Overall my impressions were probably more positive than most people, but the worst moments o the CGI are definitely hard to watch. That being said, I'll probably continue to watch it for the entire season. I actually enjoyed it more than the movies, despite them being higher budget. Maybe it's just that it's finally to content I care about seeing animated, or maybe it's because I like the atmosphere more. I'm not sure, but it's at least watchable enough to have my attention.

Very fair. Your thoughts mirror mine, only thing dissimilar is I'm apathetic towards the animation.

This probably the happiest either character has ever been. Even when Guts had sex with Casca the dude was emotionally torn up over it.

I always wondered was he torn up over it because he loved Casca or because she was being taken away from him?

Yes, I've read the whole thing up to the boat part. What do you mean touch issues?
Guts goes Berserk whenever somebody touches him. It's due to him being raped as a kid so he really has severe mental duress whenever he's touched by a person so him having sex with Casca made him go nuts and he chocked her afterwards.
Yeap, Miura listens to it while he writes berserk and I'm pretty sure he personally asked Hirasawa to compose the music for the old anime and movies
Too bad Hirasawa can't come back fully for the series. Berserk just ain't the same without this song.

The more I read, the more I can't believe what I'm reading. I respect people having different opinions about anime, but this is too much even for me. I don't mind the writer actually enjoying the new 2016 version but dragging the original through the mud like this... why?

She seems like a fairweather fan of Berserk if she even knew much about the property at all before this. It just screams of someone who has gotten most of the Berserk knowledge through others and is just regurgitating a lot of tired crap that came form half assed fans in the first place. I'm surprised she didn't bitch about Miura playing IdolMaster or how they haven't gotten off the boat yet.

I'd just like to say your avatar is wonderful.

She probably doesn't even know of the boat. I don't even like how The Holy Iron Chain Knight and Isisdro were seen before Guts was.

Nah, Guts was the most happy after he made love to Casca, you can see it all over his face since she took him as he was and accepted him despite his faults and issues. True love, right there.

Thank God. Maybe they'll decide they actually like making money and finally release a digital version of the series.

Am I misremembering that part or did Guts really choke Casca? I'm not saying he didn't love her or enjoy himself, I just remember the dude chocking out Casca after having sex with her cause that dude seemed confused after it.

The phenomenon of Twin Peaks created Television as we see it now. Serial TV owes a large thanks to Twin Peaks to popularising the idea of long running storylines to the mainstream. People had a reason to tune in to every episode. Lynch and Frost and the rest of the creative talent also brought Hollywood quality film to TV, in a seemingly perfect merging of various elements: detective show, soap opera melodrama, horror, comedy and romantic all in a melting pot contrasted against Frost’s authorship and Lynch’s creative musings and directorial influence. The result is one of the best and still to this day, one of the most unique television shows out there, which has since been copied or gone on to influence other fiction both on television or in other media such as film, video games and novels.

David Lynch’s work as Writer, Director and sometimes even Sound and Music Composer on feature films starts with Eraserhead. The film propelled his career into then creating various other projects which have all since gained cult status in their own way. His work has over the years won acclaim by many and he has never strayed from creating the films he wanted to. Each film tying Lynch to being one unlike any other. If you have watched a David Lynch movie, you know about it. His movies strive to be different and often dare the viewer to stare into the abyss. His movies are a journey. Twin Peaks is an epoch.

history91u2j.png

The brief history of the main events in Twin Peaks goes like this…one night a young woman is found wandering the streets of Twin Peaks and taken back for medical attention, it turns out this lady is Ronette Pulaski, who witnessed the murder of one Laura Palmer, who was found “wrapped in plastic” by the town locals. Agent Dale Cooper of the FBI turns up to Twin Peaks quickly mystified at not just the circumstances leading to Laura’s death but also of the atmosphere, the people and the secrets of Twin Peaks. Along the way he teams up with Sheriff Truman and his team at the Sheriff’s Office along with the occasional help from fellow FBI Agent, Albert Rosenfield, FBI Regional Chief Gordon Cole & DEA Agent Denise Bryson. They soon discover a darkness found deep within Twin Peaks which reveals itself as the Red Room. Its inhabitants including the likes of a Dwarf, a Giant, a Child and a serial killer known simply as ‘Bob’. Along the way they also discover the man with the missing arm, Mike, another mysterious resident of the Red Room. Cooper continues his unorthodox way of conducting his investigation and the wheels start to turn as those who have lived in Twin Peaks experience great change in all of their lives and the terrible secrets of the small town are laid bare for all to see.

Finally the plot unravels, the killer is revealed and everything becomes compounded by the fact that another killer, former FBI agent and partner of Cooper, Windham Earle becomes trapped within the Red Room, Cooper pursues him only to find himself caught in a trap from which there is seemingly no escape. Cooper always wanted to save Laura and the people of Twin Peaks but instead becomes the small town’s next victim. Losing himself to Bob, we last see Cooper laughing at himself in the mirror with Bob’s reflection staring back. Audiences everywhere were shocked. Seemingly trapped in purgatory, 25 years later, we now see Cooper again, seemingly… free? What fate will the people of Twin Peaks meet next? And what has become of Cooper?

It is happening again.

Angel Badalamenti’s beautiful score played such a large part of enveloping its audience in the atmosphere. Thankfully for us all, he has returned working with Lynch for the first time since Mulholland Drive. As has Julee Cruise to provide more beautiful vocals to the world of Twin Peaks. Along with them Moby has been hinting at contributing to the music this time around as well.

Listen to samples from the soundtrack below:

F.A.Q:

Can I start with Season 3?

Anybody who is new to Twin Peaks should start from the beginning, Season 3 will undoubtedly confuse new viewers with such a rich history.

What is Laura Dern’s/Naomi Watts’/Robert Knepper’s etc role?

Unknown. We don’t really know anything about the new cast members.

What is the plot of Season 3?

Again, very little is known and they’re keeping a very tight lid on the events of S3.

Did the actors who died in real life get to finish their scenes?

Unknown. They may have had to rewrite some of the scenes or they did in fact finish them but little information is out there regarding this.

What happened to Donna and Sheriff Truman?

Their fate is pretty much undetermined. All we know is that their actors are not returning to Twin Peaks.

Characters:

Twin Peaks is home to the most… interesting cast of characters ever seen in a show. Below is just a small sample of the returning characters and the new additions to the main cast can also be found in the full cast list found here:

Yeah he grabbed her around the neck but didn't actually choke her I don't think.

EDIT: Looking at the manga again he lets her go right away and tries to run away due to how he reacted to sex because of his rape as a child since that's what set him off into his psychological breakdown but she comes back to him anyway to let him know it's okay and she accepts him no matter what/accepts that he is damaged like she is, so they embrace and make love. For somebody as insecure as Guts is that is what made him so deeply in love with her.

It's kinda why Guts hates himself so much after hurting Casca in her bad mental state after he let his psychological problems get the best of him and almost rape her in her weakened state since he almost became the one thing he hated most in the world (like Donovan and Griffith). People might miss the Donovan and Griffith parallel, in that one act he became the most repulsive kind of being to Guts imaginable.
Ok thanks, for some odd reason I remember that the other way around. I thought it was sex first then choke, been a couple of months since I read it and I sort of just speed read the whole thing, my fault. Guts' view of sex is way different from Griffith's, Griffith just sees it as an empowerment thing if I'm not mistaken. It took Guts a long time to see it as a mutual bond between two people.

12 episodes (make sense considering the pace the episode titles showed).
3rd episode is entirely new (considering that they can't animate Guts fucking a demon, obviously what happens here would be an heresy so they probably asked to change it heavily).

Its a bit off topic but If anyone wants to know what an actual good looking CGI animation based on an anime/manga looks like check out this clip from the Gantz CGI and see how badly they botched the Berserk anime. Using CGI is no excuse for the ugly animation or anything else when something like this exists and is fully CGI:

I don't know why they didn't go full CG like this upcoming Gantz movie (or Final Fantasy Kingsglaive) or just went with a OVA series like Hellsing Ultimate instead of this thing they are doing.

Yeah Gantz 3D looks pretty cool. I'd have been satisfied with an OVA series if it meant better animation and less content.

The more I read, the more I can't believe what I'm reading. I respect people having different opinions about anime, but this is too much even for me. I don't mind the writer actually enjoying the new 2016 version but dragging the original through the mud like this... why?

Nah, I'll say it. That dude is wrong. 80s 90s anime is still the best anime. The grit, the handcrafted nature of it all...It's really hard to find stuff like that these days. Everything now looks too clean a sterile.

Seriously,I don't know what they're thinking with the armor. Either go full CGI look or leave those metal shaders out of it.

So I'm gonna go read the manga now, from the beginning even though I saw the 90's season.

That being said and avoiding spoilers: has Beserk the manga ended?

I'd say it still needs at least another 100 chapters to really end conclusively, so probably at least 15 years even if the pace were to speed up.

So I rewatched the first movie and I forgot that Guts looks like a Joestar in the Phantom Blood/Battle Tendency art style; it was really weird.

Both early Jojo and Berserk are surely influenced by the art of Fist of the North Star. Kenshiro bears resemblance to both Guts and Jonathan Joestar.

Except that Guts in the manga and in the 97 anime looks nothing like any of the Joestars or Kenshiro save for being muscular and having thick eyebrows in fact I'm pretty sure Miura said that Guts' appearance was based on Rutger Hauer. Like look at this;

Hokuto no Ken absolutely was a big influence for Miura. He even talked about it really recently in a Young Animal interview.

If this is only 12 episodes their budget must be even smaller than I thought because god-damn is it ugly. It hurts me knowing that JoJo has been getting a fantastic adaptation and Berserk can't catch a break.

Finished the trilogy in the past couple days. I'm hooked on the lore. Dunno if I should go and watch the OG anime or start the new season that just aired. Sounds like I missed a lot but I got the gist, I think.
