Now what's the next step in your master plan?
It's bad content though.

What's bad about it? Wyald is supposed to be a "bad" character even in the world of Berserk. He takes that whole Apostle ethos of do as you desire with your life to its most insane and disgusting lengths.

The whole Black Dog arc combines all the worst qualities of Berserk while adding literally nothing to the plot.
It's season 5 of GoT of Berserk if you will.

Happy about more positive impressions of episode 2. I only just discovered this thread and that it has started, and the impressions of the first episode were brutal.

I'm totally giving this a chance... I never read the manga but have been a fan of the Anime for years, and watched the movies as soon as I could get them from Amazon.

I only learned about the movies when the 3rd one hit theaters and it had the cut and uncut versions playing in parallel... did we get the uncut version in the western localization? I suspected not... I heard about demon penis that I didn't notice... though the rape was pretty damn graphic for a film.

Back OT, I'm excited to finally continue the story, in whatever form this is.

Oh, and the very first thing I ever experienced of Berserk was actually the Dreamcast game... so imagine how confusing that was. I lent it to a buddy and his "kids broke it"... fucker probably sold it for a high price. I didn't care much at the time, but years later it hit me how cool it would be to still have that!

Ok, so having watched Episode 2, I will admit it was definitely better than Episode 1, but it still isn't very good.

Serpico's voice is just terrible. Farnese's and Azan's are pretty good. Griffith's is really good. Animation remains stiff and awkward; there's nothing fluid to character movements, which is especially bad when the fights happen. Casca seems to be getting whiter by the minute, so that's pretty much tanked my hopes of Episode 1 just being screwy. Music is nothing to write home about; I just can't even tell what mood they're trying to set half the time, the songs are so awkwardly arranged.

We will have to agree to disagree, a big part of that whole sequence was to show off the fact Guts could take on an apostle one on one even before he became a monster killing berserker not too mention what it does to Griffith.

It's bad content though.

It's bad in the sense that all forms of depravity and violence are bad but I still think it's significant enough for Berserk fans to read through it. If you're reading Berserk odds are you are coming into it morbidly curious about he ways it can make you feel dread and discomfort at times and this delivers in spades.

I think it's a good juxtaposition piece compared to other parts of the manga and at the very least and people unfamiliar with it should still read it and decide for themselves whether or not it was worthwhile.

You arent missing much by not watching the OG anime besides shitty animation, key characters missng, and a shitty ending.
There's a difference between shitty animation and animating around a budget, the art is still high quality. The VA for Japanese and English is top quality and the soundtrack is out of this world.

I think Wyald is useful for at least inducing a feeling of pure horror, it's like a foretaste of the eclipse. You could say that the first encounter with Zodd achieves the same thing, but Wyald is like the first encounter with something like that in the full light of day.

As someone who hated the first episode, I thought the second one was awesome.

Wasn't bothered as much by the animation/art style as I was in the first episode. Nice interaction between Farnese and Guts. Puck was great.

Btw, I'm crushed that we likely won't see the
horse rape scene.
It's one of my top 5 BERSERK scenes if not top 3. I just love the PTSD Guts got in that scene, and how he responded.
First time Farnese sees Guts ain't all bad either.
Hopefully whatever Miura changes it to is as visceral as it can be without it being what he did in the manga.

Miura is an 'executive supervisor' on this project but who knows how much control he has. It feels like Miura has nothing to do with this adaptation.

I don't know if Casca's race being 'changed' bothers me as much as it normally would with any other media (I'm looking at you, Ghost in the Shell).

The lands of Berserk are 'European' and Casca is at the most 'mixed race' as she doesn't have African hair or features. Also, even though she's consistently drawn with dark skin has her race ever been mentioned in universe or by Miura himself? Wasn't her father white? Don't remember if you see her mother in the flashback. Maybe Casca is Berserk's version of Spanish, Italian or Greek?

Regardless, one of the best things about Casca's character design is that because of her dark skin she stands out in group shots. I like that Miura did this with the Hawks to make them stand out like Pippin being a massive guy, Judeau having gentle features, Rickert being a kid, etc.

She was adopted, if I remember it right? Her colour done by Miura seems to match the likes of Silat and Daiba (brown skin) so I'm guessing she's closer to Middle Eastern/Southern Asian than African, or at least based on those features more. That's just my take on it, people often argue over this. She's definitely not supposed to be Caucasian though, that's for sure like they're portraying her here.

Berserk 02

I fucking despise this show, even though this episode was better then the first. There are moments that could be cool, would be cool if the show didn't look so terrible. But everything looks like a PS2 cutscene aside from ultra close up shots and it just ruins it. This has half of JoJo's pie - cool shots, cool camerawork and some cool direction but an utter failure on the visuals. The conversation between Farnese and Guts just looks so...abysmal. In consideration of your injuries? What injuries you didn't draw any in this scene aside from the bandage. Farnese and Serpico are in such gaudy colors, good Lord. The art style really fails those outfits.

Why is Guts inexplicably terribly injured upon meeting the knights? Oh its because we skipped Lost Children where he got wrecked. Nice one. Again, these Golden Age flashbacks do nothing for the Berserk fans or newcomers because they suck. Yeah we know about this. Newcomers don't because you can't get all the details about their relationship down via shoddy flashbacks. Also still using "hawk" and not "falcon" zzzzzzzzz

Soundtrack was gud tho

Yeah, I believe the reasons for Silat and Daiba's race is to make their unique fighting style more fit into the universe. I think Casca's skin tone is to set her apart from the rest of the Hawks in manga format mainly because her race, and race in general, never comes up as an issue, theme or subject. Casca being Desi or Hispanic would make most sense in the context of a 'Medieval European' setting as there were people travelling to and from these regions (Persia, Egypt) in the real world during this time period.

Personally, I've never perceived her to be Caucasian but I'm not settled on a definite race for her, I'd like to see Miura clear this up once and for all one day. It seems like a fairly common thing in East Asia to whitewash in the media.

Episode 2 was definitely better but the main issues I had with the overall look and animation are still there. It's almost painful when you have 5 minutes of an odd looking Farnese to be ended with a great looking close up of her face. Makes me wish it would all look like that.

That was pretty decent. My main problem is the pacing I suppose. Things move so fast that information would be a lot to take in for a newbie. Those pointless flashbacks seem even worse since that time would've added some much needed breathing room.

Also keep the goddamn camera still.

That said when the music started near the end, things got pretty damn good. I look forward to the next episode if it is indeed written by Miura, although I question
what looks to be kinda fillerish in an adaptation that may need as much time as possible.

didn't the fight where fracese was a hostage happen outdoors when she began to realize guts wasn't the monster she thought he was? Placing it in a building is weird but in the end the story should have the same impact

Why are the Golden Age flashbacks all 2-D hand-drawn animation? Are they trying to have us remember the better times of the 90's anime? Are they trying to make us all suffer like Guts? Because if so, it's working. But not for the reasons they were going for.

Watched episode 2. Frantic pacing and Casca-whitewashing aside, that episode was an improvement over the first.

Yeah, that particular scene takes place completely outdoors. Makes me wonder if they'll keep the shot of a faith-shattered Farnese hunched over as the sun rises in the distance?

You are not suffering. It's a cartoon. Deal with it and stop watching if you feel traumatised.

Props to you guys sticking with it. I decided to drop it after seeing that first episode, but I'll probably still read impressions because they entertain me more than the show itself could. Was looking forward to seeing Berserk material from something besides the Golden Age as well.

When we see her back story, we find ot that she lived on the border to another land. So I just thought that was the Kushan empire and that she might be Kushan, or at least part Kushan (at least it was my head canon).

I think I would have much preferred no characters being hand drawn if they would have instead hand drew the environments. They are PS2 era level visuals.

Edit: Is this a preview of the Vita version of the Berserk Musou?

They really need to stop doing those elaborate camera zooms and shit cus all it does it make the 3D models look even worse.

Also laughed at the weird editing when Guts talks to Serpico, I know it's minor but Guts walks out of the tent and stops right next to Serpico to speak to him and then the next camera angle has Guts walking away but he's way ahead of where he was just a split second before.

Things like add up to make the whole package feel amateurish.

What, they skipped the lost children arc? What the acutal hell? That's easily 2 volumes of the manga and pretty much THE absolute highlight of the entire Dark Knight arc.I mean there isn't really much else happening between the Eclipse and the Dark Tower.

This and the screenshot above are an utter disgrace.

I mean what the hell are they going to do if they advance the story at this pace if they have TWENTYFOUR episodes to fill? 18 episodes of "the adventures of Shierke and her party" (please god no, the manga already fell apart after the Dark Tower arc, particularly after the trolls)?

Doubt I'll ever bother to watch this series and will just wait for a better adaption of those arcs (be it TV-series or OVAs, Hellsing Ultimate style OVAs would be neat). Meanwhile I'll just keep watchin Ajin instead for my Seinen fix, which, despite being mostly GCI, actually looks great. If any of you haven't seen it yet, check Ajin out, it's absolutely fantastic.

Found some time to squeeze the episode in.

Episode 2 was much better. Shocker that a big part of it has to do with sticking closer to the manga in both order of events and what events they actually displayed. Still doesn't feel like a continuation of the 97 anime and to be honest quality prospects are pretty grim but I feel like it has potential to surprise me. Sticking with it for now.

They have to stop playing BLOOD AND GUTS AND GUTS AND BLOOD song. It's pig trash.

When do you think we'll see Cascablanca in the present?

This is perfect.

I think they only have twelve episodes, so yeah. They're rushing. They'd honestly be hard-pressed even with 24.

If you really don't know why they cut Lost Children, then I don't know what to tell you.

If you mean the gore factor: They could have toned down the violence or used stylistic devices when the child fairy slaughter happens. Heck, they could even have removed Rosine's nipples or given her a rag bikini or whatever. Anything better than just cutting one of the best parts of the manga and THE main event of the Dark Knight arc outright. It's one of the absolutely essential parts of the manga because it shows just how evil, rotten and twisted the apostle's and their followers are (even when they appear nice, friendly and innocent), being the point where it becomes clear that Guts has become utterly ruthless and because the events are THE reason why Farnesse and her knights go after Guts in the first place.

If you mean that the arc is shite: Opinions man, it's one of my absolute favorites

Probably also budget and time constraints. No, I don't think it's bad.

A lot of people are going to be forced to accept the reality that this show will never be what they want. It could have been, but it's not going to be. This episode was an improvement, but they're not going to stop with the animation style they chose. Personally, I'm going to watch until the end.

Watched it. It was a slight improvement over the first episode but I think that's just Berserk's inherent quality shining through. Some good shots, loads of garbage ones that tank the episode.

Next one looks like it has new content or at least jumbling them around. I guess they couldn't really get away with the horse stuff.

Someone forgot to set the shadows to high.

But seriously, it's crazy how there are better looking videogames that run in real time.

I imagine there will be an uncensored blu ray. The first episode also seemed to black out some gore bits after the girl was cut in two.
It becomes especially embarrassing if you compare it with what Polygon Pictures is doing with their GCI anime TV-series (Knights of Sidonia and particularly Ajin). Now THAT's proper GCI on a budget.
