Well, I'll see you guys after episode 2. I'll still give it the usual 3-episode rule, but definitely with expectation in check.

Can't be worse, right?

...

Finished the trilogy in the past couple days. I'm hooked on the lore. Dunno if I should go and watch the OG anime or start the new season that just aired. Sounds like I missed a lot but I got the gist, I think.

Just read the manga. The movies are a trash adaptation of the story. The 97 series retells the same events but it's more faithful and better directed than any other Berserk adaptation.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Both early Jojo and Berserk are surely influenced by the art of Fist of the North Star. Kenshiro bears resemblance to both Guts and Jonathan Joestar.

Well Miura did do a manga with Buronson, the author of Fist of the North Star. Miura did the art and its not very good, its called Japan. Very nationalistic.

Except that Guts in the manga and in the 97 anime looks nothing like any of the Joestars or Kenshiro save for being muscular and having thick eyebrows in fact I'm pretty sure Miura said that Guts' appearance was based on Rutger Hauer. Like look at this

Guts its partially based on Rutger Hauer but in general one of the biggest inspirations to Berserk is the work of Go Nagai, namely Devilman

I don't see Bruce Lee + Mel Gibson / Kenshiro / JJBA in any of this.

Hokuto no Ken absolutely was a big influence for Miura. He even talked about it really recently in a Young Animal interview.

Well that makes sense. Miura has worked with Buronson like I mentioned above so even if its not a direct inspiration, I'm sure he took something from his time working on Japan.

I rewatched the first episode and I gotta say the part where he first draws the sword is pretty well done. Gets me legit excited.

I'm ready for episode 2 today o(≧∇≦o)
with more shoddy CGI

OG anime is the best adaptation of the manga we're probably going to be getting any time soon. Soundtrack is also the best I've ever heard in an anime series.

Huh, this episode was waaaaay better than the first one, imo. Hope Berserk stays on this level, at least.

I agree, this was far better and enjoyable than the first episode. Though I'm still not feeling the music, I think that was Forces towards the end? It felt different in some way.

Its a bit off topic but If anyone wants to know what an actual good looking CGI animation based on an anime/manga looks like check out this clip from the Gantz CGI and see how badly they botched the Berserk anime. Using CGI is no excuse for the ugly animation or anything else when something like this exists and is fully CGI:

What the... there is a Gantz movie? Oo

Nope still ongoing but moving at a snails pace.

Do we know why does it take Miura forever to release 20 pages?

Ive always been interested in Beserk but never had a chance to watch any.. Should i start watching this series?

EDIT* From reading some of these posts the first episode is not well-received. :)

Second episode was pretty good - much better animation and direction wise than the first episode. Everything just felt much tighter - and there was substantially more 2d work featured this time too.

Really loving the flashbacks to the Golden Age.

The second episode just came out like 60 minutes ago. No one here is in a position to judge the entire series yet.

It's one episode but yeah it hasn't left a good impression. Berserk is still a manga series worth getting into and the 97 anime is brilliant.

If you want to watch this, go watch the movies or the '97 series + the third movie, as this anime just drops you in the middle of the story.

If you haven't watched or read any Berserk, then definitely DO NOT start with this series, since it doesn't cover the beginning of the story. Your best option is either the manga or the 90s anime, depending on whether you want to read or watch it. The movie trilogy is not as good but is also a decent choice, although I would highly recommend the 90s anime series over them.

What the heck!? Everyone knows Casca had black hair!

Damn seems like we're stuck with CaucasCa
That was pretty obvious from the number of scenes with her like that in the previous episode. The episodes were already made, so the best to hope for would for it to be edited for bluray/dvd release, but I'd doubt it.

Gave the second episode a chance and while not as bad as the first episode I'm still not feeling it.

I just can't for the love of me stand the CG stuuf at all especially when the very few non CGI parts look this good

if only the whole thing was this good :/

That screenshot is just like the other one, where she's being illuminated in pitch darkness, though.

She's still whiter than a ghost when she was several shades darker than Guts in the manga, bright lights or not.

Marginally better, Guts still looks like he belongs to another sfm project though.

Every scene with Casca is pain and the VA for puck isn't great.

Probably too late to change it now, I'll just internally scream whenever Casca shows up.

Btw how do you guys tell the difference between 2D and CGI scenes? I can't differentiate between the two at all in this anime.

You arent missing much by not watching the OG anime besides shitty animation, key characters missng, and a shitty ending.

Yeah just missing a more fleshed out story, some great art, incredible music, a really good English dub...

I don't know if Casca's race being 'changed' bothers me as much as it normally would with any other media (I'm looking at you, Ghost in the Shell).

The lands of Berserk are 'European' and Casca is at the most 'mixed race' as she doesn't have African hair or features. Also, even though she's consistently drawn with dark skin has her race ever been mentioned in universe or by Miura himself? Wasn't her father white? Don't remember if you see her mother in the flashback. Maybe Casca is Berserk's version of Spanish, Italian or Greek?

Regardless, one of the best things about Casca's character design is that because of her dark skin she stands out in group shots. I like that Miura did this with the Hawks to make them stand out like Pippin being a massive guy, Judeau having gentle features, Rickert being a kid, etc.

After reading half of the manga since the first episode I can see why people don't really like this.

Awesome that you ended up reading it at least!

Your description of the original anime also fits for the movies perfectly. Both adaptations have their ups and downs. I don't believe its necessary to watch the entire trilogy and the series before going to the manga. Better to just go to the manga after seeing one. It's pretty redundant watching them both in the same time-frame regardless of personal preferences. The manga is 10x better than either anyway

I was uninformed... and now I am informed!

But yeah seeing his older stuff gives me hope that I may someday draw as awesome as he does.

While not as egregious as the first one, Episode 2 was also bad. People will naturally enjoy it more cause it's a much more faithful recreation of the manga events. It's still badly directed (that circular pans...yikes), bizarrely edited, and awful sound design decisions (even the Hai Yo insert is random). As an adaptation, a few changes, some are a consequence of past decisions (Puck and Guts relationship, who is the blackswordsman? why are they after him? why is Guts hurt after such an easy fight?), others are surprising (Farnese being acquainted with the band) and others are just random (i don't really understand the purpose of the flashbacks)

They really seem to have an hard time with the models. Guts looks like shit. Farnese is way too symmetrical (she looks good in the very first shot of the episode, the rest not really). Even in the the flashback scenes (which seems to be the same team of the opening) they look wrong (Griffith looked nice though). Azan and Serpico on the other hand looked nice.

As I said about the first one, the cgi is an aberration, the changes are idiotic but the real negative aspect of this thing that really brings it down is the lack of talent of it's direction. The interrogation scene is a nice example. It's just flat, boring, static, weird zooms, over the shoulder stuff, the axis jumps all over the scene, a bunch of flashbacks for the sake of it. Feels so random, like the director has zero idea what he wants to do. Just focus on Farnese man and let us understand why she gets so pissed over what's happening in the tent.

Better, but of all the reasons to be irked with flashbacks in a new anime after all these years---I never would've imagined the main ire from them would be a continual re-emphasizing of the insane whitewashing of Casca.

Just...so utterly needless on top of all else.

Thankfully, episode 2 didn't change my opinion, enjoyed it as much as episode 1. Also liked that the theme playing at the start of the episode and the scene where guts
escapes the camp
is the same one used in the Golden Age movies.

Episode two is actually pretty great. Give it a chance. There is CG, but it's not as bad as the first episode. Plenty of 2D animation goodness, but if only the entire show was made like it.

How many episodes will this season have? First I heard 25 here on GAF. Then I read 24 over at Wikipedia and then I heard 12 here on GAF again. Anyone want to clarify?

So I'm gonna go read the manga now, from the beginning even though I saw the 90's season.

That being said and avoiding spoilers: has Beserk the manga ended?

Like HiatusXHiatus, or GRRM... We are patiently waiting for a conclusion.
At least GoT has HBO

Go read the manga from the beginning.

Anime is missing a few arcs from the beginning [Black Swordsman Arcs] and even the Golden Age arc from the movies have some key moments removed
(The King sending his dark knights, led by an Apostle, after Guts and Crew after they had rescued Griffith)

Yeah the Wyald chapters are, well, disturbing, but it's quite a bit of content Berserk fans miss out when they skip the golden age arc of the manga.
