Not too mention Guts looks like he's got a crescent moon shaped face in that pic.

Just watched the first episode. Yeah I guess no surprised based on the comments in this thread but I didn't like it all.

While I enjoy good animation I can deal with an anime that doesn't allways look great.... but this is one of the first shows where I'm distracted by how ugly it is. The ugly CGI look is already bad but the stiff and rombotic animations make it so much worse. Seriously, what's with Berserk and ugly CGI, they made 3 movies using some bad CG no one liked and then went like "yeah, now let's make a show in that same style!!". What?
Didn't like the choice of music either, berserk should sound more like Dark Souls and less like generic metal.

How the pacing and directing will unfold is still to be seen. But so far this was a terrible first impression

This is a well crafted plan to get you to like the previous animations, you see when the original animation debuted back in the 90's many Berserk fans didn't like it because all the things they skipped or just flat out omitted even where these things are important and happened during that Golden Arc.

Then the movies happened and people started liking the classic animation more and more, now we have this atrocity that makes the movies tolerable shit with great animation. Even when they are just horrid you see people saying they are not as bad.

Once the boat arc gets animated in 2028 with PS1 CG-like graphics, 5 frames and a homeless guy with a guitar doing the intro people will find a new love for this adaptation and will like this shit by saying "well at least the CG was PS2 like and not PS1 like" and "there were some cool shadows here and there"

We are in hell.

There is no current anime with the level of detail that adapting Berserk properly, hand-drawn, would entail. It simply would never be made. It's time that "fans" got over this fact.

This isn't to say that what we got is fine, but even comparatively to other modern anime, it's at least on par. I guarantee that Dragon Ball Super has more money behind it and they're cranking out episodes that look like they outsourced them to elementary schools.

I think this is a bit of a false statement. Look at something like Red Line from Madhouse. That is 100 percent hand drawn and a work of passion. It also took 7 years to make but is packed with details on top of details in nearly every single scene and animates like a dream!

Or even something like Princess Kaguya. its not the same style as Berserk as all but there are definitely animation houses and directors and such that could do Berserk justice even if they don't capture every itty bitty detail from the manga.

The CG sucked, but aside from that it's more animated Berserk, so I still enjoyed it :)

Shame they went 3D though. Made Aijin look bad too. The only anime so far where it truly seems to have worked is Knight of Sidonia. It wasn't perfect, but the 3D worked so well for backgrounds and mech action that it overcame the characters.

I think he meant it's impossible in practical terms, not technical ones.

People have had different reasons for disliking each adapation. You can't just lump everyone together and act like we're all of the same mind when we come to disliking each adaptation. I've never seen anyone complain about the lack of detail relative to the manga. You would have to be out of your mind to expect that level of detail.

The biggest complaints regarding the recent movies had nothing to do with (hand-drawn) animation or detail, as it's one of the more beautifully animated movies in recent years. The complaints revolve around 1. The use of CG 2. The omission of material from the manga... The Wyald fight for example. Or how half-baked some of the plot/character conflict is relative to the show...Which I personally don't agree with, but makes sense given how many hours the TV show got to tell the story vs. three films. 3. Casca whitewashing

I'd be happy with a Hunter x Hunter style adaptation. Well animated, consistently drawn and detailed enough to look good, and doesn't jump around or butcher the story.

Look at what you just wrote. You compared something that took 7 years to make to Berserk's 2016 made-for-TV adaptation, something that was also announced out of nowhere and we knew had a budget of nothing. And then you're comparing it to Princess Kaguya, which took 8 years to make.

If Berserk 2016 took 7 or 8 years to make and it ended up looking like it does now, yes, I'd be disappointed. But the one making false equivalencies here isn't me.

edit: Additionally, the full runtime of this series is going to be somewhere around 9 hours. Be reasonable with your expectations please.

Ok as I said, I'd take a Madhouse style Hunter x Hunter animation. I've repeated this a couple times or maybe something along the line of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. I don't need it to be a recreation of every single scene down to the most minute details. I'd like it too look good, animate well, and if it had some great music that would be great too. There are tons of well animated, good looking shows that come out and run for a very long time so I'm not sure why we're making this out to be some insurmountable challenge unique to Berserk.

Nobody is asking for Miura's perfect drawings here, but what is "reasonable"? Is this first episode a "reasonable" result given the time and budget?

This is one of the worst animations I've seen, no exaggeration, it looked raw, inconsistent, and poorly animated.

I'm really not sure why you (and a bunch of other Berserk fans with the same argument) think that a proper Berserk adaptation would need some insurmountable budget and will therefore never happen. There is a lot of amazing anime that is done on a low budget, all you need for a good show is a good team behind it. The biggest problem of the new anime isn't even the budget - it's just bad in everything and more money wouldn't really fix that. Heck, just look at the original Berserk anime - barely enough budget to properly animate the thing, but the end result was still amazing.

And no, this definitely isn't on par with modern anime. From what we've been shown so far, it's probably the worst show I've ever seen. Even the Puzzle and Dragons anime that is currently airing is better than this, and that's just incredibly sad.

I'm pretty damn sure a lot of people would be happy with JoJo's level (even season 1) animation. Hell people were happy with the last Berserk series and the animation is easily the worst part. Great direction, adaptation etc. goes a long way.

The original anime was far from amazing. Nostalgia goggles are in full effect, friend.

edit: Animation-wise, at least. The sound direction was elevated somewhat drastically by Susumu.

Is anyone arguing otherwise? We all know it was low budget, those panning shots over still images to sound effects and music made that pretty obvious. However it was far far more true to the spirit of the manga even if they omitted certain characters and events and overall a more competent looking production than what we've seen so far from the current anime.

Hard to have nostalgia for something I've watched last year. Bad animation quality is not much of a problem when the direction, art direction, music, voice acting and pretty much everything else is amazing. It captured the atmosphere of Berserk wonderfully and managed to properly convey the great story even with a bunch of cut content.

Well this was a fun driveby.

Go watch the earlier shit then? This is a sequel series to the original arc which has been done repeatedly.
Why you heff to be so mad. See I just didn't know this was a sequel. I did no research I just saw a dude who looked like Ike from Fire Emblem in a new anime. I was gonna come on here and post my thoughts then I read about it being a sequel on here. I don't reallu have the means to go back unless it's on CR already. Have nice day friend.

Hmmm

off topic. Is season 1 of Jojo way worse than the other ones? thing is I watched first season back in 2012 and I wasn't impressed enough to keep watching it

Are other seasons huge improvements? I'm not easily impressed by anything and only HxH and AoT were good for me after FMA(2009).

I knew about the anime since 2005 and only watched it in 2013

it was very enjoyable even if it wasn't a masterpiece and flawless work.

Now I'm just sitting here thinking about Berserk with Roundabout cliffhangers.

The only bad thing about Part 1 is that Jonathan Joestar is fucking boring. Part 2 is much better if you got that far. Jojo doesn't become modern Jojo till season 3 when you get punch ghosts and the current Part 4 anime is pretty good too.

The series gradually improves in pretty much all aspects. Part 1 in particular is by far the worst part, and it gets much better in part 2 (episode 10, I believe). If you looked at the currently airing part 4, you probably wouldn't even think the same team is working on it since it improved so much.

Some people really exaggerate the weakness of Berserk 1997. It's true that there's a lack of polish in some of the character art in middle and distance shots, and there's not continuous lavish animation. But from the way some people have talked about it I expected it to be practically a picture drama, but it still has a fair bit of animation even in the action bits. It may make obvious use of stills - well-drawn and stylish stills, I might add - but I've seen so many anime that move far less and have far weaker art. Plus the art direction and overall visual creativity really make the show shine. There's a lot of atmosphere which helps to elevate the material. You should go watch something like Samurai Flamenco if you want to see an anime that fails miserably at being visually engaging on any level.

People probably just complain cause it's old. The new "anime" doesn't even look as good as Zeta Gundam and that's like from 84 or something.

Animation wise it ain't great, but story wise it gets pretty amazing. JoJo's animation has improved a lot, which is part of what I meant that people would be happy with it.

Berserk '97 has absolutely fantastic background art. It may not be the best looking show animation wise but it has 100 times the personality that 2016 has. 2016 is a cold, mechanical and emotionless facade.

Just going by the first episode I have to agree with this 100%. Hopefully it gets better.....

I'd heard how bad this was and yet I still wasn't prepared for that. What a disappointment. I actually had my hopes up after the first scene because (aside from a small delay going from the 3D knight to the close up of her face) it didn't actually look that bad.

Then the rest of the episode happened. The 10 seconds of Susumu Hirasawa's new song was pretty okay, though?

Just able to watch it, it is not bad... but it isn't good either. The animation is all over the place though and it really messes with the viewing.
I will give it some more episodes before I drop it.

I'm disappointed after watching eps 1 just like everyone else. however, I'll continue to follow it to it's (bitter) end. to be a fan of Berserk is to suffer, be it the manga or anime. this is a fact I've accepted a long time ago. it seems fitting in a way that we're getting a new adaptation like this 😞

You read the manga...from the very beginning because the anime cut some very important things out. You want to know why Guts has touch issues? Go read the manga. You want to know what really happened before the Eclipse? Go read the manga.

You can watch this anime but I'd recommend against that at the moment. I'd say try picking up the manga. Dark Horse seems to be doing a new reprint with new covers, some added art pieces, and so on. Buy one a month and you'll need over 3 years to get to where the manga is currently, plus whatever is released in that time. I'd also say start from the beginning as the anime cuts out several prominent characters who don't appear much in the golden age like the Skull Knight and Silat and of course Wyald.

To be honest I'm super eager to know what happened post Eclipse. I'd hate to retread the same plot lines with the rise of Griffith. I actually found some of that a bit slow even in the old anime.

I understand that but some pre eclipse stuff is different in the manga and certain parts of Guts backstory and even what really happened before the Eclipse were never adapted outside of the manga. As far as I'm concerned the movies and the new anime just turn Guts into a murder addicted rage monster and I really doubt the new anime would handle his later growth properly as well. I honestly just say "read the manga" for a reason. I can see this thing butchering Farnese as well.

I'm actually a little worried how they are going to handle some of the more salacious and disturbing parts coming up. They might be even worse because of how stilted and weird everything looks.

Like someone else said, I actually really like the intro song as its own thing.

But for a Berserk theme its not at all the tone I would expect. Feels like something you would hear on a shonen anime.

I'm resigned to the fact that the OST from 90's Berserk will never be topped. There's something about it that hits you in your soul. I don't know much about Hirasawa but I'm guessing he is a Berserk fan as it's the only anime he's ever done the score for if I'm not mistaken. He even has a credit for the second anime movie.

The 97 anime features a lot of still shots and ways to 'cheat' around the small budget but it never really looks bad at all. Even The E
clipse
which was at the end of the arc was still beautiful and actually ended up having some of the best looking moments in the entire series unlike some anime finales (I'm looking at you, Gainax). [Potential Spoilers]

Heck, even the movies which have been slated for their CGI had some gorgeous shots.

This is just scrub-tier animation.
