Episode 6:

This might have been the worst directing effort of anything I've seen in quite a while. Those dialogue scenes..the sk-guts has a bunch of ugly dissolves, everyone just fucking standing and parroting their lines, the farnese-antyhing is just confusing. The Mozgus one starts wide, then the director crosses the line for a over the shoulder (maybe a pov of Serpico? No cause he disappears in the next shot), goes to a medium close up, a centered shot (pov of Farnese?) and then the director crosses the line again for a wide one. wtf....and the amount of information we got in 3 minutes, it's like a speed-reading.

SK va, his shinning everything, anything major in this anime is beyond criticism cause they can't even make a simple scene work.

And the orgy ahahaha. Yeah he fell. Somewhere. Somehow. Unperceivable. It ends with a spanking with the camera moving circular over them, like a fucking carousel.

This episode was a mess. I felt like the previous episodes were improving but this one was a big step back. They sped through so much shit that I honestly didn't know what the hell was happening, and I read the manga.

I noticed both of these as well. And it's not the first time they're done the spinning camera thing before either. It's bizarre and upsetting.

Damn! If the episode is really that bad, I might wait for next week's episode to come out before watching this one.

If you can wait, it's honestly not a bad idea.

The big downfall of this episode is there's just no mildly entertaining parts. No Susumu-scored fights, or a rape horse muppet. It's mostly just boring and headache-inducing cinematography. Pairing it with any other episide will make it seem less like a slog meant to last you a week.

As someone who only watched the 90s show and never read a single issue/vol of the manga. I was so hyped to see what happens after the original show ended. But this is just mediocre best. The new characters aren't as cool as band of the hawks. The animation to me feels like it's a downgrade from the original even though the original came out almost 20 years ago and probably had a lower budget than this. I am upto episode 3 so far. Man...Only reason I will probably keep watching its to probably to see the ending to the guts vs girfith story. Also helps that Guts is such an amazing character. Also how the heck did guts escape where the original left off. It seemed to me he was dead/about to die. He had 0 chance of escaping when the demons had him pinned down.

Not happening in this or any time soon. Honestly it's about the journey. There's so much awesome Berserk manga content now you could read it and then immediately read it again and you wouldn't be bored or remember everything.

That rape horse wishes it was animated as well as a Jim Henson muppet.

I almost never do this, but I'm dropping this show. Episode 5 had my hopes slightly up, but in fairness it's probably just hearing more of Susumu Hirasawa's new song that hyped me up. Episode 6 however is atrocious.

I've just started the manga -currently reading vol. 6 -, and I feel like this new series is spoiling me the post-Golden Age events in the worst way possible: by being a poor alternative to the manga and speeding through things. I barely understand what's going on or who the characters are (outside of Guts, Casca, Puck and Skull Knight obviously). It's spoiling the story in a nearly literal sense. The 90s anime worked because, from what I've read so far, it cuts out very little and gets the tone and pacing right. This doesn't. I might watch it later, but only once I'm caught up with the manga to make sure the anime doesn't spoil anything for me.

I can't imagine how anyone who hasn't read the manga at all or seen the last CG movie with SK would feel. Speaking of...

Dude, as others have said, just drop this and read the manga instead. There currently are 38 volumes: the beginning happens after the Golden Age with the Band of the Hawk, then it's the Golden Age arc - what you know from the 90s anime - until volume 13. From volume 14 on, it's all original content that takes place after that. In other words, there is still 25 volumes' worth of content yet to be covered - not to mention the fact that the manga is still going -, and this new anime only lasts 12 episodes. So you're not getting the full story.

What you're getting in this adaptation is a heavily truncated, modified, poorly produced show.

If you must watch Berserk animated, then at least watch the 2011 movies before watching this. There are three of them, and they cover the same period as the 90s anime. The big difference story-wise, aside from the fact that the movie cut out more stuff than the 90s anime, is that they have a proper ending. You get to see how Guts and Casca escape the Eclipse, and the beginning of their new life. Watch the third movie if you can't be bothered to watch the other two. That's where you get the end of the Eclipse.

Guys Ive never watched Berserk. What's the best way to get into it before the game hits? I think I'd like it.
But I'm confused with all the titles and series and movies.
I just want to watch it not read it.

Same for me, Kilrogg. Dropped the show and decided to finally get off my ass and read the manga.

I'm at vol. 10 and I can't believe I almost spoiled this amazing piece of art of a story with this insulting anime adaptation.

The only reason why I never bothered with the manga was this smidget of hope that one day they'd continue where the anime left off. And now that I've seen what that looks like... no fucking thanks.

4 episodes was all I could endure.

The best, most complete way is and always be the manga. 38 volumes and counting.

With the exception of this new adaptation, there are 2 older adaptations, both of which cover the first 13 volumes of the manga (roughly) and nothing else:
- The 90s anime series. 26 episodes.
- The 2011 anime movies (with CG thrown in, kinda like the new anime except better). There are 3 of them

So yeah, again, those two adaptations cover the same part of the story, called the Golden Age arc. That arc covers past events that led to Guts's current status as a cursed warrior hunted by demons and the world generally being a shithole.

Question is: should you watch them? And since they tell the same story, which one should you watch?

Short answer is: watch the 90s anime, then once you're done, watch the end of the third movie.

Why? The 90s anime is, simply put, better and longer, but it ends very abruptly. Without spoiling anything, the end of the third movie gives you a sense of closure that is completely absent from the end of the 90s anime.

Just know that you're not getting the whole story because the manga goes far beyond those two adaptations.

[EDIT] Just so you know, the new 2016 adaptation covers what happens AFTER the Golden Age arc/90s anime/2011 movies, which is why people were initially excited about it. But it doesn't cover everything, and it's really bad, so my advice so far is to just skip it and read the manga instead. I don't know how much the game covers, but it goes beyond the Golden Age, that's for sure. There are characters in the game - including playable characters - that I haven't seen so far.

Thanks for the info. I'm confused with all the editions on Amazon. I want to get the anime series from 90s and the movies and the new one. I see this

But not sure which one it is.

So what you're saying is. You don't want to experience proper Berserk.

Watch the 97 anime. I can't imagine having a pulse and not wanting to read the manga after that.

Are there larger formats of the Berserk Manga?
I have several of the Dark Horse releases and the artwork and text are way too small to properly enjoy. A nice large format like the adult coloring books would be nice, or how about massive coffee table sized hardback compilations?

The best way is to read the manga. If you don't want to read but watch something that sorta resembles it, then watch the 97 anime series, which adapts only a small part of it. Both the movies and this show are atrocious adaptations.

I think the dvd series is oop though. Blu only in japan

You can watch a good cut of the 90s anime on youtube.

I rewatched it after rereading the manga and before I started watching this anime. Although it isn't perfect I think it holds up extremely well.

The preferred way to experience it though is through the manga.... which isn't very easy to get your hands on legally unfortunately. I can't believe there isn't a digital version yet.

You can get your hands on the German double volumes pretty easily, but those seem to be exclusively in German. Single volumes of any languge - forget it (for any reasonable price at least). Some volumes in stock, others unavailable and sold for horrifying prices.

I'd post an addendum, as somebody who has also somehow held off from the Manga after all these years likely on account of the Susumu Hirasawa factor, to first watch the original anime BUT THEN scope out all the Berserk games, then round it out with the movie trilogy. I forget exactly how it all breaks down in order, and I don't think it was as massive a portion as with Nadesico back in the day, but still...somebody here probably knows.

I'm 99% some of this current anime was covered somehow in some of those older games as it is hitting bits of nostalgia and lore that I recognize which shouldn't otherwise be possible to rouse from my dusty memories after all this time.

You'll never experience berserk then, people aren't exaggerating how much better the manga is. The 90s anime is acceptable but misses stuff out so if you want to continue youd have to start the manga from scratch anyway.

Manga reader here, watched the old series too, and I finally got around to watching the first episode of this. GAF wasn't wrong, it was pretty brutal. I guess I'll stay away from the rest of it considering I didn't really enjoy a single thing about that episode. God it was so ugly.

I got into Berserk a couple years ago. What I did was:
Watch the older, 90s anime series. It covers the early stuff from the manga, which is the best story arc in the series, and it does a really good job of it.
Read the manga if you want to get the rest of the story (you will). You could also skip the anime entirely and just start the manga from the top. In fact I'd recommend starting the manga from the beginning irregardless of whether you watch the anime or not, but you could probably get away with just continuing from the point where the anime ends.
Avoid the new anime. I watched one episode and it was traaaaaaash. If you want the whole story you pretty much have to read the manga.

Edit: Sorry for double post, oops

I saw the comic books are available in amazon. And description says they are in English too. So If I saw the 90s anime. Every single episode. How many volumes I can skip?
Or where should I start from?

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

You should probably just start from the beginning as the 90's anime cuts out a couple important characters who didn't have big rolls in the Golden Age arc and it excises one major antagonist.

As I tell most people, just get one volume a month if you can pace yourself and you'll need more than 3 years to catch up to where the manga is today as well as having the content that was released in the mean time.

Let's just say for the sake of financial reasons. Each comics is like 10 dollars. From what I understandt there is 38 issues/volumes out right now.
Volume 13 covers the eclipse in more detail. It should be the perfect launching point for anyone that wants to pick up where the 97 anime left off (and you CAN'T miss out on Miura's art for this event). I know people want you to start from scratch (shoot, I do too haha), but the 97 anime covers the golden age much better than the movies do.

You want to get caught up as slow as possible or you'll undeniably suffer more than you have to. lol So you can take your time in buying stuff.

Black Swordsman arc ends in middle of Volume 3 though.

Actually, it'll be 12.
That's a frustratingly short number because this arc is pretty predictable in Guts has a vision of Caska burning at the stake in episode two, so it's basically him walking in a straight line of him slicing through Mozgus and getting her back.

Black Swordsman arc is at its best when it takes a more of a road trip, so it's a shame they skipped both the elves and trolls.

Ah well, glad it's only 12 episodes then. Anyone know how long this shitty studio has rights to the license for?

Damn I hope Netflix or someone gets this as a passion project for anime fans. Berserk anime never gets the love it deserves :(

There's no licensing rights that the animation studios involved in the current Berserk production, Gemba and Millepensee, hold to the IP. As is standard for anime, there is a production committee made up of many different companies, including Koei Tecmo, Mainichi Broadcasting System, and NBC Universal, that puts up the funding for the production and has ultimate oversight of it. Of course, Hakusensha, the manga publisher, is on the committee as well, and they ultimately have the right to work with whomever they wish to produce any new Berserk media.

Guys is there a dubbed version of the 90s anime?

There's like 6 episodes of Berserk on Crunchyroll but not sure which one these relate to
