I think someone earlier said the novels were getting a re-print with a different SKU.

Could you possibly provide a link, because I can't seem to find mention of it anywhere.

I may as well wait to go for those to complete my collection as a few volumes scattered through out the current series are either out of stock or completely out of print.

Sales velocity for some of those volumes are in the tens per month, which is abysmal. :(

I haven't heard about but I hope it's true.

It's sucks that Dark Horse owns the rights cus if it was Viz, they'd have released some VizBig versions of the manga like with Vagabond and DBZ.

[edit]

It's crazy how long they've been out of print, was googling around and saw people talking about how volume 4 has been out of print for a long time and that was almost 3 years ago.

The DB series actually confuses me because there's two complete collections of DBZ that both appear to be "BIG". One is 10 dollars and collects 3 volumes per omnibus, whereas the other one is 13 dollars and also collects 3 volumes/omnibus.

I agree with you though, the Berserk release is disappointing because it's one of the smallest sized manga in my collection (although the paper quality seems to be a bit higher than the regular Viz and there's a lot of ink on each page).

And I know for a fact that Dark Horse can release high quality manga because of Planetes, which is a lot like the Viz BIG.

I read somewhere (don't remember where) that DH doesn't do reprints until they have enough orders to justify one (I think they said they needed a thousand or more; something like that). I'll have to see if I can re-find the article. They also discuss just how poorly some of the volumes sell too (which is where I got that figure of 10s/month).

I actually watched a video about that a few days ago.

https://youtu.be/J3uDwNnkjsk?t=2m34s

tl;dw: There's a collection that's the same size as normal manga volumes that collects all 3 in one and then there's the VizBig versions that also collect 3 but the size of the volume is bigger and it's just all around a higher quality product.

Man, the quality of the regular omnibus is atrocious. Same as regular volume + paper so thin that ink bleeds through?

Yeesh.

Man, what is up with the regular animation of this series? Static shots looks good but when they're in motion we get this:

It's like they're rushed or something

Btw, thanks for the recommendation of Gantz. It's pretty decent so far (150 chapters in).

I think some people may presume that if the current studio made the series purely in 2D, it would look like a Madhouse or Bones caliber masterpiece. When in reality, there's some incredibly heinous drawings mixed in the parts that are 2D.

I can't find a still offhand, but in the latest episode when the woman who tried to get food for her baby is sitting in the torture room, it looks like something a high schooler scribbled out.

If anyone watched Shirobako, this is likely analogous to what is happening behind the scenes.

This look is actually growing more and more common in anime though some studios and artists do it far better than others. One Punch Man has a lot of scenes where the quality of the drawings becomes much more sketchy and "harsh" but often goes with much more kinetic and frentic animation moments, usually during fights. One Punch Man and Tengan Toppen Gurren Lagan was another. It often looks rougher in stills and frames taken out of context but things are usually moving so quick on screen you don't notice as much.

I think it's way more obvious in this because of cg as well.

How can one man be so wrong?

Gantz is easily on par with Berserk until it ends poorly. Which, let's be real here, could potentially happen with Berserk someday.

I liked Gantz a lot but its pretty shallow despite having some pretty incredibly highs. It was the definition of an awesome premise and a great start and middle but you can tell there was no clue how to wrap things up or come up for an explanation for what was going on. I would have rather the series just ended with none of the third act and just end with another random group of people starting the whole Gantz thing up for the first time themselves.

While it's not perfect, I've been enjoying this immensely. It's been the better part of a decade since I've last read it, so a lot of this has been stuff I forgot.

Im rewatching the fight scene (cause of Susumu) and it's giving my a headache. Between some very strange decisions in terms of spatial definition, crazy closeups, the camera moving in circular (in what would be a more normal pan), the low framemrate of the entire thing and the space not being conformed

this is a hack job. At least confirm the continuity of the environment between 2 frames. This is straight up amateurish.

I rewatched the Golden Age films the other night and honestly, whilst I complained then about the animation in those - it's actually good in comparison to this new series. At least the apostles didn't look like arse and chips.

The issue with the battle scenes is not just the usual shit anime purists love like backgrounds, the animation or framerate - it's that you can't really follow them because there is like 0 flow in them and dozens of weird cuts that confuse the viewer even more

You complain about a shot that is intended to be seen in motion; the anime has a very questionable art style but at least be fair here. It looks far better in motion (and often better than what the actual episodes offer lol)

Also everyone should check out Thunderbolt Fantasy, its incredible and if you're wondering why I'd love to see a Berserk adaptation in a similar light over what we got... well check out this gif.

Anyone thinking puppets means Team America needs to check this show out. Its amazing.

Noticed this while browsing Crunchy Roll, that opening battle was amazing! I need to watch more of this!

I think SK knows the God Hand can't be fucked with. He couldn't even beat a non combatant class like Void.

Was this from movies or new show?

Non-issue. Such frames are not intended to be noticed by the naked eye during motion. Judge the show by how it looks in motion, not by how things look in freeze frame.

I am yet to see this episode, but this sounds incredibly nit-picky.

On the surface it's pretty nitpicky and the fight felt good enough, but losing spacial continuity in storyboarding during an action scene is a huge faux pas.

The reason the fight with the dog apostle in episode two felt so janky was in a large part due to the storyboarding of the scene. Guts is teleporting around and never facing where he's going, and following the action is just overall confusing.

In contrast, on a fundamental level, the Studio 4'C movies were immaculate in that regard.

Steve Ahn is a director on Voltron and was one of the main boarders for Korra and other action shows, and he teaches a storyboarding class to professionals. In it he breaks down how every single shot of the opening siege in the first movie is structurally flawless montage. Whether or not you liked the movie or not is a whole different subjective matter, but the storyboarder really knocked it out of the park.

Just look at that skull knight gif above, and think about how the same action beat would look in the new show.

It looks terrible and jarring in motion though.

I forgot what a depraved piece of shit Nina was. Luca went well beyond the realms of just a simple Bright Slap.

Does Skull Knight not move his jaw when he talks? The only time it moved was when he talked about the eclipse. Though it was just a jaw drop.

They couldn't even afford to animate something on one axis

Wait! Isn't the skull a piece of his armor, not his actual face? Same with the skull armor on his horse, does the dude even have an actual physical body?!

Pretty sure it didn't move while he talked in the movies too.

Explain his jaw moving then. Unless it came loose at that one moment.

I've yet to see the latest episode, did his jaw move or not while talking? It didn't in the movies and don't remember seeing him with open jaw in the manga.

Though it's not uncommon for helmets that cover the whole face to have a moving lower(jaw) piece. Certainly make more sense than having decorative spikes coming out of his actual skull.

He opens his jaw to eat behelits as well as insert his sword inside of his body to create the sword of actuation.
