there is so much wrong with this that I can't even name them all due to the sheer amount

from faces, to animation, to colour bleaching, to plot changing, to sound effects, to battle choreography

I only care about Puck. As long as they do him justice, the rest of the anime could be bottom tier garbage for all I care.

Most people here are going to watch every single episode of this anyway because it's Berserk.

And then go back to read the manga to cleanse their mind of it.

One day the Berserk manga will finish and we will have a studio that will give Berserk the Hellsing Ultimate treatment and adapt the volumes (very accurately like Hellsing Ultimate) into hour long episodes with a good budget, animation and soundtrack.

Until then we have to endure stuff like this so that Berserk at least remains relevant in people's mind for a while.

It's not unrealisitc but difficult to pull off when what you have to work with is not a lot
I still don't see how this line of reasoning disqualifies all criticism. Especially since JoJo is doing just fine with what I'll assume is a comparable budget.

Meh, I enjoyed it. Definetly need to get used to the style and some shots look really bad, but whatever. It is Berserk and I had my fun with the episode.

I just don't get how they can't do a proper adaptation of Berserk when each week there's a bunch of animes coming out with great visuals and animation, but one of the most popular manga ever can't even do basic shit?

Music was horrrrrible! Does not fit Berserk at all. It's more what you would expect from some edgy shonen. Music was not dark/depressing at all. If they couldn't get access to Susume Hirasawa's music then they should've gone more church-music-ish, like in Guts' nightmare.

Animation was very stilted, they seem amateurs in 3D animation.

The story changes were OK. Guess they had to if they wanted to start after the Eclipse but still reel in new viewers.

Guts' face was bad.

Skeleton soldiers were all shiny, very bad.

Foleys... bad. I get that they tried to make the sword sound like a piece of metal just clanking against stuff, but it did not sound appropriate for the things it was clanking against (skeletons n stuff).

Overall... sad, just sad. It's a mess. Good bits here and there and a buch of bad bits everywhere. Very disjointed, in music, visuals, sounds.

I only care about Puck. As long as they do him justice, the rest of the anime could be bottom tier garbage for all I care.
Puck was good, but the voice was annoying.

Those other anime usually have moe blob characters that they can market and merchandise to the otaku fanbase to recoup their budget. You don't have many characters in Berserk that you can do that with.

Also it seems like they keep trying to push CG onto Berserk, maybe they don't want comparisons to be made to the 97 anime. Especially given the artstyle that most anime these days are in. I mean it would be better than this CG mess we have right now but the art would still be very bright, sterile and clean which doesn't match Berserk all that well. 90s was the best time for a Berserk anime but even back then they couldn't put a big enough budget to it. And Berserk NEEDS a big budget and high talent to be done justice.

That is the point Jojo anime came from 2nd rate studio too and budget also low but they care so much more.

you are right, when I watch Jojo I get the feeling that the staff from studio behind it are all fans, watched Berserk and I get the feeling that the staff haven't even read one chapter from the Manga nor don't know who HIrasawa is. How could that music be approved?

There is so much wrong with this post I don't know where to begin. So I'll just say to go watch this trailer for Mob Psycho 100, another TV anime that will be airing this season.

I didn't say every anime these days is like that, there are obviously exceptions.

Hell I would've loved it if the studio who did OPM did Berserk too. But those are very few among many. Majority of anime these days are garbage moe blob bait.

Having followed anime closely for many years now, I can assure you that the statement "Good animation only goes into moeblob shows because those have characters the industry can profit off of" has no basis in reality.

And if you like the studio that animated One Punch Man so much, I hope you're looking forward to Alderamin on the Sky!

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Maybe HBO will try its hand at adult oriented R rated animation again and give us a late night Berserk series. I can dream at least.

Edit: Maybe Pixar is tired of making kids movies and dabbles in a Berserk film. They can make the opening like the scene from Up but between Guts and Casca. ;D

Yeah, it would be cool to see shit like Spawn: The Animated Series coming out of HBO again. I think Spawn was just recently added to Amazon Prime, and I've been watching and enjoying the hell outta it once again. Berserk would be a good fit for HBO.

Adult Swim announced it was doing sequels to FLCL and I hope those are big successes as well as being great anime as well so that maybe they start trying this more often. I'll take a third season to the Big O that maybe possibly makes an attempt to answer some of the questions the series sets up but I'd also love if they made a deal with a big anime studio, get some passionate Berserk fans to produce, direct and create it, and release a faithful, good looking adaptation of Berserk on Adult Swim! Think about it! A man can dream haha

As someone who quit watching anime 10 years ago and who gave the Berserk Golden Arc movies a try just a week ago I didn't really have any issues with the animation but the tone shifts and anime tropes definitely put me off...I guess I was expecting something with more mature tone (not gore wise), that jpop ending was dumb as hell and clearly shows who the anime is going to cater to.

Didn't find it super bad but I was just expecting something different.

Spawn style Berserk animation for HBO...

whew

Now that would be dope.

HBO Spawn, now there's an example of making something look good when you have almost no money.

Yeah..... not a fan. Especially the faces are often just lifeless. When Puck was ranting at Guts his face barely moved. Looked really weird.

Only moment I really liked was when he pulled his sword, that was well done.

Oh and yeah what's up with Caska being white

I went in with realistic expectations and I got what I expected. I think Miura may have slept through those EP meetings though. lol It wasn't terrible or anything. Yeah, Guts does look skinny and Casca isn't brown enough. Sagisu was pretty much Bleach-tier, but there were some standout pieces of music to me.

Voice is terrible. I know female VAs can do boy voices, this isn't that. And for some reason I always had him as green in my mind, not blue.

Why Jojo and Ippo can get good adaptation and Berserk Can't

Why..

Don't bring up Ippo please
:( come back

It was pretty crappy but I still enjoyed it. I was expecting the worst thing ever after reading the impressions here. The animations just feel so off, if that was better I could be more forgiving of its other faults like mishmashing a ton of chapters into a single episode. I guess they did it this way so that the new anime could conceivably still take place after the original anime? IE, introduce Puck in this late fashion and have the Collete stuff as a replacement for the girl/tree attack at the beginning of the Lost Children arc. In the next episode preview, it shows Guts in chains. How are they going to explain that, he just got a minor scratch in this episode.

Pretty ugly but a few bits and pieces here and there were nicely done, I think they did a good enough job of making the sword feel like it had solid weight (apart from the times when they didnt ;) ). Better than I expected, which is damning with faint praise.

I mean...it's not the ideal, of course it could be better, of course we could dream of the ultimate Berserk anime that was so totally awesome...but is it that bad that I wouldn't watch it going forward?

Nah, it'll do. If after almost 20 years this is the best we could get, I'll take it.

Not a Jellyfish

but I am a sheep
I just finished the episode, good god was it bad but I will keep watching because it is new Berserk content.

CG is bad, sword clanging noise is terrible and overall just what are they doing with the story? Opening of the episode I was on board thinking okay yes lets go with what happened after the eclipse and then they decide to just throw in skeletons and a tree monster.

Well I'll watch it and keeping an open mind but it was a pretty sad start. Still I'm just hoping to see Mozgus be fucking over the top a lot and hope the Musou game doesn't suck.

Im enjoying it, I like the story. I liked the movies, too. The visuals arent the best ever but eh. I still hope it gets a dub. Im happy to see that it hasnt taken long at all to see all Guts' new party haha.

Sorry for the really really dumb question, but am I able to watch this for free on Crunchyroll but just a day behind? Or do I need to get premium? Thanks :)

As first episodes go, I actually found it pretty enjoyable. The super colorful CG infused animation was jarring as hell in a few spots (the part in the Inn), and the music is a weird fit for the subject matter. But otherwise, I thought it was decent, it felt pretty faithful to the parts from the manga. I mean, they left out a big chunk from the beginning. But I've seen and read that beginning part so many times now that honestly, I was glad to see them skip it.

That CG stuff, though... Fuuuuuck.

It looks bad most of the time, but I still enjoyed it a lot. Just really glad to have more Berserk. They can always fix the animation in future stuff.
