Berserk |OT| - Big men, bigger swords, OFF THE BOAT - Berserk #344 24/6/2016

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I am absolutely terrified of what the F.E.M.T.O. System would look like.

Fixate on a female in an increasingly unhealthy fashion
Extinguish all hope for salvation with horrible demon tentacles
Molest her and other terrible things to get back at your best buddy
Torture the love of her life in front of his eyes... eye.
Obliterate her mind and move on and disappear into the night.

What you really don't want to see is the U.B.I.K. and S.L.A.N.N. systems.

At least he's off the fucking boat now and Griffith got bitch smacked.

Don't get me wrong it was pretty great and I look forward to the Rickert, Daiba, and Silat party and it's nice to see Luca doing well and etc etc but that was not as much content as I was hoping.

Well those IdolM@ster games aren't going to play themselves.

We have a wild Berserk chapter out there, untranslated but with a quick glance I saw tons of witches, wizards, talking tree's with faces, a glimpse of the moonlight child, and an entire village of magic users.

It's nice that Schierke finally gets to socialize with peers that can relate to her.

I mean, Guts and friends are well and good, but the opportunity for Schierke to connect with fellow witches should lead to interesting character developments.

I just had a quick look at it as well. It looks like it's a solid chapter! It's got some really great art and quite a bit of creativity. I'm really loving how the story seems to be moving at a fairly fast pace at the moment too. I can't wait for the translation of it to come out! Also, the next chapter is due July 22nd! Things are looking good for Berserk fans!

I like the knowing look the old man on the goat gave Guts when he first rides up after causing the rain to put out the fires. Neither says anything but you can see each sizing the other up.

Does anyone know where you can pick up Volume 29 of Berserk for regular price? Used copies are going for 40 and new are going for 90-100 bucks. The only place that has it at regular price has a BBB rating of F and from what I understand are basically thieves.

They really need to reprint more man. This is crazy.

Sadly that's all for now until Dark Horse does another reprint. Or you can join me in writing them constantly about how they really need to release some of the older volumes and hell, give us a special edition set of volumes that are larger, nicer in quality, maybe have some extra bonus art from Miura, and a nice hard cover. Oh yeah!

I would buy hard cover compendiums in a heart beat. But Berserk would need to become ultra popular in the west for DH to do something like that. Hopefully one day someone makes a fantastic Movie/Game/Anime or whatever that sparks interest in the series again. It's one of the best pieces of literature in the medium it's in. It's a shame it doesn't get a royal treatment in other forms of media.

The budget is usually the issue and maybe not the best studios chosen but I wonder if it isn't MIura himself in part. He sounds like a bit of a recluse and those are always hard to work with. I can only imagine what the Young Animal reps have to do to get a meeting and then ask him when the next episodes are coming out or if he wants to make a videogame with so and so or an anime with this studio. Who know's what his opinions and requests might be like haha

It's a long shot, but have you tried checking comic book stores in your area? That's what mostly ended up working for me when Berserk went out of print the first time a few years back. I still ended up having to track down the rarer volumes online (namely #16, which was going for $60 - $100. Scored and got mine for $15 after a LOT of searching), but thanks to that comic store I managed to get most of the stuff I was missing.

I know Dark Horse reprinted most (if not all) of the volumes last year, but it looks like they didn't make a lot since a lot of it's gone OOP again. Here's hoping they do at least one more reprint with the new anime series and game coming out.

Jesus, that's insane. I just checked Amazon and that's the only one going for crazy prices. Why is that, anyway?

I'm glad I completed my Berserk collection earlier this year. I hope those looking for them don't have to wait too long for a reprint.

Also, please check instocktrades.com because that is the best place to buy the series at a great price.

The might reprint but there's always a big issue with how much they have to do it just for the sake of having some profitability. There was a thread about this on dark horse a few years ago where, before the major reprint, many berserk volumes were out of stock

https://web.archive.org/web/20141113181316/http://boards.darkhorse.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=19979

While we at Dark Horse appreciate the concern over volumes being out of print, we have to look at both sales history and sales velocity in making our decisions about what to reprint. Though the numbers that BigRock posted are not entirely accurate, they are indicative of the low numbers of available stock for some volumes. But it's not just a matter of Dark Horse reprinting books. It only makes sense for us to reprint books for which we anticipate enough demand to make reprinting a worthwhile endeavor.

I took a look at our in-house sales history which tracks stock on hand (both in our warehouse and in Diamond Books Distributors' warehouse), number of copies sold per month, and unsold copies returned by the bookstore market. Even last year, when there was stock on hand for ALL of the volumes of Berserk, the sales velocity (copies sold per month) for many of the middle volumes was anywhere from single digits to low double digits (in the low teens). That means the consumer demand for many of those middle volumes is between 80 and 170 copies per year. Even going back to press for just 1000 copies (the bare minimum print quantity, for which you pay a higher than average printing price) would leave us with a six- to twelve-year supply. And, sadly, If at the end of those six to twelve years, we have managed to sell all one thousand of those copies, between storage, inventory taxes, and licensing fees, Dark Horse will end up in the red. Not really a recipe for staying in business.

Well, you say, why not raise the price of the books to cover the costs? Great. Except history has shown that raising prices on those volumes to the extent necessary to cover the costs would further erode sales -- and increase inventory taxes. So, that's a non-starter.

I'm just trying to layout the realities of the publishing business for you. Believe me, we'd love to be able to make everything available forever, but that's not realistic or possible.

I'm just the messenger here, but if somebody can figure out a way for us to provide Berserk readers with copies and allow us to stay in business at the same time, I'd love to hear it.

Damn they really really need to release a digital version at this point. I wonder if there is some sort of hold up stopping them from doing so. I know a punch of people who would rather buy things like comics on their tablets.

Yeah more care was put into it than any of the legit releases I own.

In the very early 2000s I got quite a few anime series in those types of boxsets. The only thing that was hit or miss was the subtitles, the packaging was always very nice. I have a similar one for the Berserk original series.

Well that sucks, I haven't read berserk since 2006. Planning on rereading it in its entirety soon.

A lot has happened though which I think its funny, saying a lot hasn't is really disingenuous. The world the story takes place has literally transformed but I will say no more.

Dope, thanks for not spoiling. Looking forward to it.

Yeah Berserk is one of those few instances where the words Epic and Awesome are actually totally suitable to describe the happenings and events that take place in the story.

there needs to be a digital version of the manga in English, I think they sell it digitally in japan so why this is this still not available here is mind boggling.

Amazon finally shipped Vol. 30! I have had it on order for over a month. That will officially complete the collection! As far as reading I am halfway through volume 24.

Dumb question but are we allowed to post chapter summaries from other forums? Someone did a pretty rough summary of everything going on in the new chapter. Though I suppose we can just wait for the fan translations.

Those guys are very picky lol. Probably not.

Kinda crazy that I have been reading puella summaries of Berserk episodes since i was a teenager lol. Time is fucked up.

I'm not sure I could have handle this, I basically picked up the manga when the movie series were announced which was ~5 years ago jeez that went fast and slow (for the manga).

I think the first time I heard of Berserk was the anime when I was in middle school and had just discovered the internet and a whole new world of anime. I didn't see it till much later but my first real experience was the Dreamcast game a friend of mine picked up. Didn't even realize it was a manga or even know what manga are hah. I was just getting to high school. Didn't get into the manga itself until freshman year in college when access to high speed internet and DC++ opened my horizons to everything from movies to anime to.... porn. And here we are.

I think we are going to get so many big long awaited events. Guts could finally have something done about the brand. Casca will hopefully be healed and we'll see what she does. And of course what Guts does, or rather what the Beast ends up doing. I'm still waiting for it to show its evil dog face. Then again Guts seemed to make some kind of deal with it/himself during his battle with the seagod, working in unison with it and the Berserk armor so who knows what will come of that. Schierke now has an entire community of experienced magic users to learn from as does Farnese. Where this leaves Serpico and Isidro we have yet to be seen. So much is finally happening!

Same here. My brother picked up the Dreamcast game on a whim way back in the day, and then just so happened to come across one of the Berserk anime DVDs not long after. He eventually introduced the anime to me (I hated the first episode but kept watching cause he made such a big deal about it). Then a little while after that Dark Horse announced they were releasing the manga in the US. Followed Berserk closely ever since.

Was probably around 15 or 16 at that point. Almost 30 years old now! I hope the manga finishes before I turn 50...

If Miura could keep up a monthly release schedule I think it could be finished in 5 years. We're basically on the cusp of multiple major events going down in the series. If Miura were to go for the dread time skip using the weird time dilation effect of being on Elfhelm, we could see just that.

Thank god I picked up Berserk late last year. You long time fans have suffered.

It's good practice for keeping something out of your mind when thinking about it won't do any good. Generally I think that the only people who still get upset at the hiatuses are the Johnny-come-latelies.

It's a lack of respect for Miura. The man is still young and if he keeps himself healthy, he'll easily finish Berserk. I don't want the man to kill himself to get Berserk out quicker.

I'm usually perfectly fine with the hiatuses, it's not like I don't have other shit to occupy my time with.

I think for a long time Miura didn't respect himself. Guy sounds like a perfectionist and a workaholic, a great and terrible combination depending on how you look at it. He had something of a health scare a few years back after overworking himself to exhaustion. He still has a crazy daily routine from all things we've heard, like 14 to 16 hour days, 6 to 7 days a week. At least now I think he takes vacations and actually spends some time doing something other than Berserk.

If anyone is interested he did a 6 part mini series a few years ago called Gigantomachia that takes place on earth a million years into the future after humanity still exists but there are several divergent species that have arisen from mankind over the eons. Its Miura but it definitely felt like a bit of a pallet cleanser for him as it was nowhere near as dark, had an upbeat protagonist who and a thousand year old dragon in a little girl body trope... well sort of. Also its got a focus on wrestling moves and is Miura's homage to giant monster/robot battles and oh yeah, there is a Golden Shower!

Edit: It takes place 100 million years in the future.

Miura seems like an interesting and deeply perverted man lol. I do need to find the time to read that though.

I believe it released as a single volume not too long ago. Not sure if Dark Horse picked it up though. I could see him returning to the series if and when he finishes Berserk. It was a really interesting world and he was only scratching the surface with those six chapters. It was actually supposed to be 5 chapters but he added a bonus sixth one that is sort of an epiloqgue that also further expands on the world the characters inhabit which sounded so exotic and surreal at times. The art was also incredible but no one expected otherwise. It actually feels a bit like Miyazaki's Nausicaa manga/anime but with a focus on giant monster fights!

How does Miyazaki find the time to draw that well? The only mangas I've read through so far have been Naruto and Claymore and the artwork just pales in comparison.
