I was so happy he survived for the entire series. I remember watching the Chuunin Exam arc and thinking this guy was so charismatic and creepy. That voice, those snake themed abilities, his costly but surprisingly effective quest for immortality... his whole aesthetic really worked for me. There are some characters I instantly get attached to, and Orochimaru was the first and only Naruto character to grab me like that.
he regains his human form later and shows no remorse when he talks to Guts and Rickert. So it's not clear if the original Griffith is gone or if Femto is still Griffith with a demonic body. I just sort of assumed it was the same as the Apostles, where they have their memories and parts of their personality, but no qualms about doing horrible shit. So you can hate Femto, because he's an asshole, but he's not the Griffith from the Golden Age. Or something. Or maybe he is?
i like a fair number of shows more than berserk, but no single character in any show i've watched is nearly as reprehensible or easy to hate
honorable mentions include johan from monster and envy from fullmetal alchemist (the first anime, not brotherhood; despite the show's other failings, i thought envy was great)
What's more terrifying than a villain bent on world domination? A villain that just wants to be left alone to do as he pleases. Yoshikage Kira just wants to live a quiet life
What a character. He's the president of the United States (not joking) and has a 91% approval rating, and yet he's one of the most rotten characters in the series, bar none. He isn't overly evil but his "fuck everyone else" mentality and the means he uses to achieve his goal certainly makes him a bad guy. I think the
final confrontation he has with Johnny says a lot about him.
Oh, and there was that time he randomly killed some guy because he was ugly.
One Piece is a happy go lucky series where everything usually turns out for the best. This character literally serves to undermine and destroy that notion. His actions basically shake the very foundation of the series. He also has the distinction of straight up being unnerving. Whereas most villains are "graah graah i'm evil" he's always got a friendly attitude and a smile on his face. Plus, he actually looks like a pirate!
The author of Setsuna's destiny (the protagonist of Gundam 00), the character who's murdered countless named characters, and the character who's arguably inflicted the most damage on the entire world. He's just a merc who loves war, but that's obviously a front. He's 00's equivalent of the devil.
BK1, also known as 'The Black King,' from the Casshan OVA.
I think what makes this guy truly terrifying, is that he didn't do anything immorally wrong. He was following what he was programmed to do, & he realized that humanity was a virus that was killing the planet. He figured the best way to protect the earth is to eliminate humanity altogether, & is firmly convinced that his actions are for the betterment of the planet.
Dio, from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. He's a complete douchebag with no redeeming qualities (apart from his fabulousness) - he's pretty much pure evil but he's extremely entertaining nonetheless. His Stand,
The World
, is my favourite Stand in the whole series too (well, technically
Star Platinum: The World is the same stand I guess so it's a toss up between the two
). The ability to
stop time is just too damn cool, as is the way he uses this power
Crushed. Events manipulated by Madara cause him to see his friend kill the only person with any meaning to him. He was still a child and manipulated by Madaras will. Which I suppose is ironic as Madara himself was manipulated.
Anyway without Obito.
Kakashi wouldn't have a Sharingan
No Kurama attack that killed Narutos parents so he wouldn't be Jinchuriki.
Uchiha clan slaughter was aided by Obito.
AKATSUKI
All of the events in Naruto that are awesome are because of him.
Even OPs suggestion was manipulated by Obito and even
kyubey's great. for all its talk of being objective and emotionless, i don't feel that's the case. kyubey almost seems to take sadistic pleasure in granting wishes.

so femto, johan and hisoka are already mentioned several times eh? than you have your answers
at berzerk:
after all the vile shit femto did i still ask myself, "is he really a villian"? he is more of an antagonist than a villian. it all boils down to the question would you scrifice 50 men/friends to save yourself and change the future of millions. (to make it better)
... rickert had the best reaction. that slap and his speech made me alil bit tearyeyed.
Obito is just a shitty Pain. He didn't go through 1/8th of the shit Nagato did but he becomes a mass murdering nihilist because some girl died and he was lonely as a kid. Sucks but holy shit.
King Meruem (HxH) - He simply follows nature's rules and by them he's the strongest and just wants his spots as King. And then
Komugi
happens and he finds himself fascinated with human nature, to the point of actually
falling in love
with one.
Hisoka (HxH) - Just the most psycho wildcard ever, I even hardly count him as a villain.
Dio Brando (JoJo) - Simply the most asshole motherfucker ever lived. Steal your gf first kiss? Done. Kicking and burning alive your dog? Done. Poison your father? Done. Spread death and corruption? Done. Becoming a threath for all of your future successors? Done.

It's all Griffith, he consciously made those decisions during the eclipse and crossed the line to being femto/full asshole.
I think the whole arc was to show that Griffith wasn't really that sympathetic towards his comrades, he also said he don't consider any of them to be his friends to begin with during his dialogues with princess Charlotte, the only person he ended up having feelings for was Guts, during eclipse he comes to the realization that his allies were just there as his stepping stones to fulfill his dreams and he accepted that.
Griffith's own feelings towards Guts was a problem and the culprit of his downfall. After transforming into Femto, he wanted to take everything back that's supposedly "his", and Casca who ended up falling in love with Guts kind of symbolizes that, thus leading him to dominate over both Guts and Casca and also to destroy their bond and what little feelings he has towards him, it's why he went to meet Guts again after being reborn as human and said something along the lines of "I've come here to see if there's anything that can still sway my heart, but it seems that I'm free.", he made those choices consciously and he has no remorse of the whole thing.
A significant portion of the Golden Age arc is setting up for Griffith to be physically and emotionally broken so the God Hand can goad him into agreeing to the sacrifice. Deliberately letting all of his soldiers die is a little out of character, but since he has the whole "my dream is everything" mantra, it still makes sense. The whole rape thing though, was so thoroughly heinous and served no purpose other than to spite Guts. Griffith has always been practical and unemotional, so doing something so petty, "I'm going to do this because fuck you Guts or something" is too much. So I wasn't sure what the author was trying to say. Griffith isn't "simply" a megalomaniac, he's a petty asshole? I don't know. The rape scene is gross and I feel like it ruins Griffith's ambiguity.
Griffith is not in the same position during the Occultation as he was previously in his life as the leader of the Falcons. He's completely stripped of everything. Why do you say the decision is out of character ?
As for why he makes that after , well its Femto , not Griffith. And yes he is doing it to hurt Guts. During the Black Swordsman arc , it's also shown he might have a special enjoyment in hurting him.
I would say Eboshi or other similar "villains" from Studio Ghibli. I understand villains that want to have power, take over the world, etc. but they're generally very simple.

She's a master manipulator. She has plans within plans. She's cocky as hell and loves it. She tortured her own child into insanity and her plan is to cause the entire world to go insane.
He wasn't brilliant or anything, but I loved everything about his hammyness. I loved his shining glasses, cross and blades in the dark. i loved that everyone was claiming that this guy is a human, despite regeneration, inhuman strange and an endless supply of holy swords. I also liked the little scenes that showed that he wasn't actually a bad guy to normal people, where he cared for orphans in his free time or stopped a fight when innocent civilians got in the way.
Dessler from Space Battleship Yamato. He's a complete and utter asshole but he's so damn suave and amazing at the same time. He's evil and he just won't die. He's the unbreakable man pretty much.
