Best graphics of any game?

You are joking right. The sand is awesome looking. The way it interacts with Drake is stunning. This is in motion - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jLv6pR6ZSk

There is nothing out there that does Sand better on consoles. This section almost makes the animation and visuals pixar like.

And I do not know what other video of Halo 4 people have access to. I have just seen the E3 demo and while it looks nice it does not come anywhere close to the visuals of stuff like UC,GOW,KZ,Gears etc.. At least not in its current state.

That sand have nothing special. No physics, no dinamic 'something', nothing. Just some prerrendered foot steps. I can't unsee that plain shadow.

I can believe someone can select that scene having so many showcases to choose in uncharted.

The end result is the sand looks freaking amazing.

Expecting dynamic sand on 2005-6 hardware is beyond ridiculouse.

How can you praise the sand when the shadow over it is absolutely plain?

What exactly were you expecting the shadow to do? Warp around with the sand? That makes no sense. Shadows are cast on the ground, not stuck to it.

You clearly never played the game.

The section where he's on top of a dune and the sand just crumbles down, is that "prerendered" as well?

what does pre rendered footsteps even mean? lol

Can't see what's wrong with the shadows, that's a rather high quality shadow and is cast the way it should.

This is by far the most stupidest argument i have seen in this thread ^^ =_+

What are you talking about? The sand is very much dynamic.

I think he means fully simulated dynamic. Which is beyond ridiculous to expect from current gen hardware. Even next gen consoles likely won't have many fully simulated physics. We will see some dynamic fluids here and there and a ton if dynamic cloth. Thats about it...

I have weird opinions about graphics... I'm gonna throw Kameo out there... as far as more recent games, I love the style in Bioshock (the first one)

Indeed. But it's still head and shoulders above what we see elsewhere.

Use the Cruise Ship level as an example.

99% of games are going to build a level, with a "skybox" of water in the background.

Naughty Dog actually built the entire ocean, then built a ship, and dropped it into the water, physics and all and then turned on weather to affect it. All of the waves, mist, etc. are dynamic events.

When they script that
the ship capsizes (which is obviously a 100% scripted event), the water flooding the boat isn't scripted, that's the actual water from the actual ocean they built, pouring into the actual boat they built.

It's sick to even begin to contemplate how they pulled it off and I hate to see people knocking the tech on display here because they are so used to the smoke and mirrors that most games use. There is some seriously impressive shit going on in Uncharted 3.

Wut? Have you ever been on a beach or something? Even your low res photos proves my point.

Of course it is. Can you tell the difference between a scripted event and a physics engine driven event?

Sometimes it's very dissapointing to see people praise the wrong things when talking about tech. Most of them confuse artworks and art direction with tech engine. Best of uncharded is not how ND did this or that, it's how many things do in a given frame being a PS3 title.

For example, Bungie did a lot of great stuff at Halo 3 lighting, but failed hard at most basics artwork stuff, so most of people just thinks Halo 3 have bad graphics.

Yeah the cruise ship is absolutely mind-blowing. Playing it on crushing and dying about a thousand times in a row shows how impressive the physics on display are.

It is possible with DX11 level hardware through displacement maps and the geometry shader.

We should probably ban downsampled gifs from crapping up these threads

That and unreleased games as well. Until people actually have played Halo 4 and Crysis 3 and seen it on their own systems, I would reserve judgment. This thread is half filled with marketing material released for upcoming games.

True. But for console discusion there is no really any direct footage beside few ones.
Best graphic should be technical+art not only one of them.

Sure Okami HD can look amazing but it's not from technical excellence but pure art.

I think right now my top3 are:

1. Witcher2 (Not super hightec but use tech well, God tier textures, God tier art)
2. Metro2033. (Good art and absolutely god tier technology aka Crysis2 am cry)
3. GTA4 + ENB (Trully next gen right here right now

Honorable mentions:

Crysis1 with mods for pure big beautifull open spaces (Crysis2 am cry)
Cryostasis
Hard Reset
God of War 3 (IQ excelence, art, textures)

Oh, come on guys. You can't be actually thinking water or sand have actual physics in current game consoles. Not even an High end PC with dedicated physic HW can do that.

Raging Rapids Ride PhysX demo

Footsteps at sand are prerrendered maps. Water, as impresive it is, have no physics either. Current game physics are as fake as Genesis Sonic's physics, almost everything is prebaked and streamed.

Can we move on?

That's like saying Final Fantasy VII looks exactly like that via mods. That's not what the game looked like, I'm sorry.

wait did cloud actually look like that when running FFVII on emulation? wtf
One would think they'd simply use the low resolution asset for the game because the output resolution of console would never allow for that much detail to be seen in the first place.

Thread is about graphics, not physics. Thread is about aesthetics and impact, not math.

Metro doesn't win anything but a few notable mentions because it swings so heavily from amazing to absolute shite.

Absolute shit is hyperbolic in my opinion but the game is definitely inconsistent, especially in the texture department (Dead City eww).

However at its best I don't see many PC games on par with it, the lighting is spectacular.

That said Crysis 2 trumps it rather easily.

If im not mistaken from the slides the used their some of their water tech with the sand.

So you know this, yet you rag on uncharted 3 for not having dynamic sand on 2006 hardware?

No, is not the same. FF VII mod changes models, textures, etc.... The WW dolphin shots only add more res and AA. models, effects, textures are exactly as they were on GC.

Should we dismiss all this Witcher 2 shots, because lots of ppl can't play the game at that res and with AA added?

It's a comparison of the unmodded PC version vs. the recent HD mod. Cloud doesn't look like that naturally via emulation, no.

Well I am hyperbolic person ;) Plus a lot of my impression is colored by how much I loathed actually playing the game. One of the few games that I preferred just getting to the next under-ground checkpoint because the atmosphere was so great.

It didn't at the time but it does now if you want it to. Since this is a thread about the best looking graphics, all that matter really is how good looking it is now, not how good looking it was at the time.
