Best graphics of any game?

Good job with the Halo 4 downsampled bullshot gif spam. Maybe you should be Microsoft's marketing agent.

Wheres the load of jaggies that I'm going to see when the game is actually run on my TV upscaled to 1080p?
If you want I could post some full size 1280 .gifs.

Well, I don't know about most posters here, but when I consider "awesome graphics" my checklist goes in that order :

Artistic design > Technology

I DO love things like Battlefield 3 or modded Crysis and appreciate the awe-inspiring technology behind it but I'd rather take a really nice art-style over a bland technology prowess.

That's why games like Rayman Origin or Journey rank higher that technological masterpieces in my eyes.

What I do appreciate, is when they try to put a nice emphasis on the art while still backing it up with good tech (like Witcher 2 or the Uncharted games for instance)

In 10 years time, I will certainly look at Crysis and BF3 as "meh" games as far as presentation is concerned, whereas Rayman Origin would probably still rock my eyes (just like Okami and Wind Waker still rock my eyes nowadays)

I agree. I do appreciate raw technological prowess but art style is ten times more important. Sick of these technological wonders that could put an elephant to sleep with their design, they always lack an artistic vision or that magic attention to details. Some games just give you that magical feeling when looking at them, when their atmosphere and style just hits that magical trigger - Despite textures being a bit lower res, lighting not being out of Crysis and polygons not pushing a trillion.

Like, after having played Dark Souls ( With the fix, of course ) I'd say it surprisingly looks better than Witcher 2, the feel and style is amazing.

A quick tip to all who want to impress us with the graphics of games that are actually ugly but you claim otherwise:

Make sure to post postage stamp-sized pics and gifs - that'll fool everyone!

Almost everything will look good at 300 x 300 pixels......
Journey looks every bit that good in person.

Seriously, you can simply not fault Journey in the looks department.

And I'd argue the music is even better than the graphics.

Defo up there with Demon's Souls and Killzone 2 for me this gen.

My God, please tell me what this is? I have a deep deep love for ocean based games like Endless Ocean and Aquanaut's Holiday (PS3 - see below for screens)

It's from Endless Ocean 2, there are certain areas that are specially marked for viewing up close, and rendered in this level of detail.

On PC I still think Battlefield 3 is the best by a significant margin. The game is properly optimized doesn't run like ass on maximum settings. Runs great even during mass scale MP battles. Great animation as well. Looks better then Witcher 2 and (modded)Crysis 2 imo.

Yeah, in terms of presentation, Journey is amazing. One of the few current games I think will have lasting visual appeal.

It looks quite fantastic too. I really loved those end sections especially when you get a little tropical storm lightning as well.
Gears 3 has some really stand out moments. I had never previously thought UE3 would ever give me visuals like that game did on 360.

I agree with anyone stating that art is better than raw power. And this means that console stuff is usually better looking. That said, when PC pushes the boundaries beyond known territories, well, that's also hot-stuff.

here some Crysis screenshots from my personal collection. Vanilla stuff, no mods.
Just FOV and light and HUD control.

Yep, Gears 3 looks amazing and it runs better than the two previous games too which is quite an accomplishment.

Also another game that gets unnoticed and doesn't get the mentions it deserves in threads like this is Red Dead Redemption on 360, still maybe the most impressive game on the 360 and one of the top 5 best looking games on the consoles this gen IMO...this game does so much things right that it blows my mind how amazing the game looks and runs on the 360 - R* really pushed the 360 hardware to it's limits: 720p w/ 2xMSAA, a good amount of texture filtering, very good textures, beautiful lighting, day/night cycle, different weather conditions which can affect foliage and trees, detailed character models and a huge draw distance all in a big world that looked and felt alive.

Also to anyone wondering if Journey looks as good as the gifs, well it looks even better in person...it's an amazing looking game.

Agree completely.

The Witcher 2 looks amazing in places (like the interrogations with Roche at the beginning) and awful in others. It's just so inconsistent.

Since those shots are very literally just the GC version upressed and anti-aliased, doesn't that mean that an HD rerelease would actually look EXACTLY like that? Except with a higher res UI.

An HD remake yes, that would be exactly how it looks, but if it's just a re-release on the Wii U, it'll be running at GCN native resolution.

But I guess what you're talking about and what I'm talking about would be two different things, you're talking about an HD remake (which I could totally see happening) and I was talking about a digital re-release (which I could also see happening).

Halo fans are really something else. They even try to force their favorite games in the graphics threads :lol Halo 4 looks on par with this generation (finally?) and now it's the best looking game of all time.

Crysis is still unrivaled in my opinion. But I don't really know Metro 2033 and some other great looking games.

It's not like both things are mutually exclusive. Visually compelling games are usually technically and artistically compelling. Many people are quick to dismiss games such as Crysis for being technical showcases, but as your screenshots show, the game doesn't lack artistic sensibility. Console exclusive games simply tend to have higher budgets. If more PC-centric developers could afford the same kind of resources, the could come up with far better-looking games than those on consoles. Hell, even console ports look far better on the PC even without advanced graphic effects because of the far superior IQ and framerate. Screen and texture resolution, texture filtering and antialiasing, along with smoother framerates automatically turn a good-looking game into a fantastic-looking one. GoW 3, Uncharted 3, GT and lots others would look godly on a modern PC.

On par? Seriously? You would have a hard time finding many console games that look as good as Halo 4. I don't know what generation you must be in, but there's only a handful of games that can be considered to be on the same league, and many of them are corridor shooters.

And Crysis is far from unrivalled. It still looks great, but it's a poorly optimised game. Crysis 2 and 3 are much better choices. There are some who simply prefer the jungle setting in the original game, but technically the original game has been clearly being surpassed by others. Artistically it holds up well, though, especially with mods.

Its the best looking game on the console.

Spoken like a true fanboy.

And good job proving my point. The game will look good, but it's going to be a jaggie fest just like previous two games.

Oh so salty.

Edit: No one's saying Halo 4 has the best graphics of all games in the history of gaming. But it's definitely at the top for console games.
The shots you've seen are from a rather old build and Frankie has mentioned everything looks better now.

I also love Wind Waker. That game blows me away, especially considering how old it is.

Erm, you know that Halo 4 runs at native 720p with AA right?

So in fact, it will not be as jaggie as Reach, and certainly not as jaggie as Halo 3 and ODST.

Graphics threads are always crazy but in this one otherwise usually sensible posters have joined the asylum ranks.

I shall of course not name names so lets just say that fictional poster TheSetho5 have lost his mind.

Isn't it stupid to make comparisons between a pc title and games that are being built on hardware from 2005?

Wait, did some say Dark Souls looks better than The Witcher 2: Assasins of Kings™?

As shoddy and bad of a port as the PC version is, it doesn't even deserve to be mentioned with the mid tier of good looking games. If you're talking art, that is subjective. From a technical standpoint, The Witcher 2™ takes a massive dump on Dark Souls.

I would even knock off points for the half assed called PC port. It could be fantastic if not for the lack of enhancements for the PC version.

The "Dark Souls looks better than Witcher 2" claim sounds crazy at first, but the more I think about it, the more I agree. No locations in Witcher 2 are as striking as, say, Anor Londo, and the armor and enemy designs? Not even close.

Dark Souls is more consistent, too, despite having its blander areas.

of course, this is assuming you are rolling with Dark Souls Good IQ Edition.

Flotsam is pretty dope, but overall I agree. TW2 has great art but Dark Souls is god tier.

This is really key, I think. Too little importance is placed on consistency and coherence.

The Witcher 2 does have great looking scenes, but the attention to detail is sorely lacking in places. Just take the neeker texture in the chapter 1 intro. It's hilariously out of place. Besides that, the lighting is incredibly inconsistent, and the color grading is far too heavy handed in places.

The only answer is Wind Waker. That game will forever be gorgeous.

A true triumph indeed. One of the most beautiful games ever made.

Imagine what would be possible with that artstyle today on modern hardware.

Too bad the gamer babbys destroyed any hope of Wind Waker 2.

Those Crysis faces remind me of TV sets with the sharpness set to max (ie. not good at all).

I might get Journey just to see how it looks like on my projector. Looks a bit dull though (coming from someone who loved Flower).

It seems to be contagious.
nice stealth :P

In art, yeah. Overall visual flair goes to TW2. Many areas in Dark Souls look blocky and dated. I know Witcher 2 has it's down moments but overall, it looks great. I can't believe this is even a question.

Are we not looking at the same textures or something?

Now, you can find bad spots in both games but unless Dark Souls get some better textures, I wouldn't even put them in the same conversation. Art is something else though, as I said twice already.

Crysis 2 dx11 is probably the best looking game ever, even though its scope is not that impressive, etc.

This gen has brought us countless jaw-dropping games (on the pc mainly).

I mean, Alan Wake (my god this game in 3D), Mirror's Edge, Just Cause 2, Sleeping Dogs and other console ports look incredibly good. Mind-blowingly good given the proper treatment (like crazy high resolution and AA, 3D vision, etc.). And that's just vanilla-gaming.

On the console-side of things, I'd say the usual ones: Gears 3, Uncharted 2, some areas from Killzone 2/3, some tracks from GT5, RDR on 360, Wipeout HD/Fury.

And yes, Journey is incredible. And so is Halo 4, from what I've seen.

Dark Souls, really? I mean its not bad after you do the res patch and have it downsampled from say 3840x2400..but by all means it not all that great.

Witcher 2 can sometimes look off but generally it looks amazing. Consistency is important and underrated in games today, but Dark Souls does not look good enough to fall back on the consistency card imo.

I think the buzz around Durante's fix, and the resulting drastic improvements to the game's IQ is causing some craziness
