Betrayer announced — hands on with new FPS from the creators of F.E.A.R. and No One..

I'm intrigued for sure.
For Monolith hayday dev team is a big part of that obviously. If only the NOLF IP wasn't in license hell.

This game's gonna play hell on my eyes.

The art style looks nice but that high contrast monochrome is going to burn out my retinas on my TV.

The art style looks jarring. It's not that it's bad but such contrast-heavy black and white hurts my eyes pretty bad, playing that for hours will give me massive headaches.

Need to see way more before I make a solid opinion on this but without its black & white trick, it looks like a normal FPS. Add the textures to everything and we have seen it all before. Hopefully they have something more to the title and not just "Its black & white guys! So edgy!"

Not my favorite genre so I might be biased, but the "art style" seems more or less like a lame attempt at covering up poor graphics and some pretty standard gameplay. I wouldn't get too excited about this.

About 50% of the human population have eyes that are sensitive to stark black-and-white contrasts like this game, which gives them headaches and eye strain. Adding some in-between colors and making the contrast less extreme would help. Hopefully the devs are aware enough of this issue and they don't think too highly of their "unique" art style so that the game is more accessible.

Madworld was unplayable for me because of that, and this doesn't bode well either.

Contrast is so cranked up, almost to the point where I feel sick looking at the game, don't think I would be able to handle playing it. :/ Sounds like a pretty interesting concept though.

Mad World ended up with a more yellowish tint to make it easier on the eyes. Maybe something similar could be done here.

It look interesting at first glance, but the art style looks like more of a distraction. If the video is any indication then this would be almost unplayable for me.

I feel like they need some more grey in there or it's gonna be hard to play this for very long chunks.

I'm intrigued by the style though. That and dev pedigree, of course.

Everything is so black and white with you people.

8/10

Well, good to know I'm the 50% who doesn't have a problem from looking at it. Hopefully, actually playing it on August 14th might help the eye strain for others when they're immersed in the game.

It'll be like playing a full game in Alice MR's berserk mode, which is A-OK with me.

well I am totally interested, the art style is pretty damn cool, but I feel I may go blind, had hard times with the trailer.

But I will keep an eye on it.

If it looked like that I would be a lot more excited. The problem is that the game is only black and white, there are no shades of grey, and such an extreme contrast is simply hard on the eyes. Not knowing anything about the gameplay, story, or setting, I can completely write off this game just by watching a video. The trailer was enough to start hurting my eyes, so playing the game would be like torture.

You can differentiate the characters from the background much easier in the alice screens than in the screenshots from Betrayer
Contrast and all that

Super high contrast. Very hard for me to tell what's going on :/

Game looks interesting though. FEAR was amazing. NOLF was amazinger.

Edit: The trees, foliage and the top compass remind me of Skyrim.

Constrast is too extreme to not have every area carefully designed to prevent situations like in this gif

where you can't see jack against that solid black.

This seemingly has horror elements though, so that could be a part of the experience. Still doesn't seem great in any way from what was shown.

Game looks interesting, but I hate the NOLF name drop considering this game looks nothing like NOLF. This is all FEAR and no NOLF.

Make a spiritual successor to NOLF next. I'm getting sick of these guys making "horror" games.

Looks absolutely gorgeous. I'm a little worried that the aesthetic might be a little overbearing at times, but I'm definitely down to give it a shot. At the worst it'll be a game for beautiful screenshots.

They name dropped it because they created it. Craig, Dave, and Wes were pretty much the core team behind NOLF.

That's nice and all, but I feel like they just drop the name to live off nostalgia. Since moving onto FEAR that's all they are doing, another game in the same vein.

what does this game have to do with fear? fear is defined mostly by slowmo manipulation to take down enemies.

It's another "horror" title.

I'm sounding salty (which I am somewhat) so I should be clear I'll support these guys on day one. I've been waiting so long for something similar to NOLF I get bitter when I see the name being dropped and not seeing the developers make any game similar to it in a long, long time. The last taste of anything NOLF related was Contract JACK and that game was terrible.

I'll stop now, don't want to completely derail the thread and am looking forward to the game.

I'd say the theme (with only knowing what was released today) is along the lines of F.E.A.R., where the combat appears to be taking a step back closer to NOLF in terms of simplicity.

Which these guys really didn't work on.
