Better Developer: Sega or Nintendo in their prime?

:lol that whole post right there makes you sound like a Sega fan who understands the truth but is afraid to admit it. Just say you like both.
...

Um.. what? I am a Sega fan, and I did say I like both. What are you talking about?

Look at half of the other posts in this thread; most of the people who like Sega better like them for their uniqueness and diversity, which were my reasons as well. It doesn't mean I won't give credit where credit is due.

Fair enough Andy, I like Sega too...

well I like Nintendo more.

I just hate Sony :D

taking that SNES CD and turning it into the Playstation was brilliant so I give them credit for that

You're just sad because Nintendo is irrelevant these days.

He is right though.

This thread is about their prime, and today isn't it.

Maybe if you look at the Gamecube Nintendo he might look something like this

Sega really showed Nintendo up hard in the Dreamcast era, and that's the way they went out. I'll always remember Sega going down in a blaze of glory with the DC, pretty much the best first party output in modern times IMO.

As a Sega fan I hate your avatar, it makes me sad :(

SEGA please come back to us

I never said Nintendo took out Sega.
I asked who won... big difference!

My answer still stands - at the time Sega lost biggest, Nintendo weren't even playing.

We're further from Sega's prime than Nintendo's though. :(

You should've just done a topic of Genesis vs. SNES. We haven't had one in about a year or so now.

:lol

This was gonna be my exact line when I entered the thread.

My vote: Sega. SMB3 almost tips it for Nintendo, but I love old-school RPG's and action games, so Phantasy Star II, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, ect. just put them over the top.

Oh, and the Panzer Dragoon Trilogy for Saturn rocked my world HARD. Still does.

Too bad, deal with it. I say it's a good game from hands-on experience!

But no matter what you should grateful for Sonic Rush DS. OH HELL YEAH!

You're right.

It's not just a matter of being distanced from its prime. There is no SEGA any more.

What makes this discussion that much harder to take is that awesome teaser trailer from E3 Sega had. I reacted EXACTLY like this

I keep coming back to Sega, hoping not to be smacked around anymore. Please let Afterburner rock...please.....

Hmm. I don't know.

There's two things to consider.

I've enjoyed more Nintendo games, but my favorite games on Nintendo consoles are third party titles. While my favorite games on Sega consoles are first party titles.

I say Nintendo just due to sheer number of enjoyable games.

I always felt Sega was more edgy and alternative and pushing gaming and while Nintendo pushed gaming in its own way, Sega will always be who made me love games with Genesis and then they cemented it with DC.

Skies, Shining Force,PDO and JSRF and SC52, Shemue2, I just love Sega!!!!!

When I was young I wasn't a Sega fan at all, since I didn't like the Sonic games, and that was the big thing during the Genesis days. I mostly ignored Sega but looking back, they had tons of really good games. I agree with posters that during the Dreamcast era Sega had an incredible output of great games, however, I still think Nintendo is the better overall developer.

It all comes down to when was Nintendo's prime. Nintendo hasn't really ever released a ton of greats in a small time frame. They have just made great games over the years. So I guess if you're judging by only a small period and not their total output, I guess I would have to say Sega.

Plus Sega made Zaxxon.

I enjoyed both Sega and Nintendo since the early 80's, cannot go wrong picking either or. For arcades, Sega bar none, /humble bows. Their arcade originality, quality as well as quantity kept me entertained for years.

Home console front, I was always partial to Nintendo. When Mario, Zelda, Duck Hunt, Punch Out, Metroid etc.. came out, it was like the Sega of the arcades - originality, quality and quantity.

oh boy. I guess I'd vote Nintendo because I think their best games are the best games ever made, but good Sega was about as good as games can possibly be. Basically, either of these companies at their best represents what is good and holy about gaming.

Nintendo, though I have to admit I rarely played any Master System games and almost entirely missed out on the Saturn (all the games everyone loves anyway).

I loved the DC and was fond of the Megadrive, but when I think back on my fondest gaming memories, they're almost all Nintendo.

Nintendo has continously developed some of the most revolutionary games of each console era.

Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Legend of Zelda
LoZ: Link to the Past
Super Metroid
Donkey Kong Country
Mario Kart
Super Mario World
Super Mairo World 2
Super Mario 64
Star Fox
Star Fox 64
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
WaveRace 64
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2
Super Smash Bros.
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Pikmin
Pikmin 2
Fire Emblem
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Zero Mission
Paper Mario 1 & 2
Mario and Luigi SuperStar Saga

... this is just the tip of the iceberg. And let's not forget the phenomenon known as Pokemon. I don't like the Pokemon games and I've rarely played them, but there was a point where Pokemon ruled the world.

Nintendo's lineup of quality games is unrivaled. Sega has often put out more crap than quality games, especially over the past few years.

It's no contest: Nintendo

Mario64 and Fire Emblem give it to Nintendo, barely.

I don't really like choosing between the two companies though, they both made so many amazing games. Hope they can resurrect themselves in the next gen.

P.S. And Miyamoto was right, games DO need to be shorter.

As a game, maybe, but there was only one Sonic every year or two. That does not make a system. It started as an action platform with shooters and arcade conversions and ended up being the system for sports game. Aiming at a different demographics was the way the Genesis was able to gain valuable market share (and Sonic stole a bit of Nintendo's).

I'm gonna have to go with Nintendo back in their prime, since their games were so revolutionary... but I also loved SEGA's games, they were very gritty and had their own sense of style. SEGA did make my favorite game of all time, though. Oldskool Nintendo is the best developer ever, with SEGA at #2 and Square at #3, IMO.

It's hard to pick what exactly Nintendo's prime is; you could make arguments for NES era (85-89), the NES/SNES hybrid era (89-92) or the SNES/N64 hybrid era (94-98). With Sega, for me it's much easier....it's definetly the Dreamcast. The truth is that no one can really compare to Nintendo's early NES days when they had multiple industry revolutionizing games, so I have to give Nintendo the edge here.

Only games I ever stopped eating and showering for are Nintendo games. You know the deal: wake up around 8-9am, start gaming, realize around 6 pm you stink and are dead hungry with a headache. Just to beat that one-eyed Goohma in LOZ or dead Hitler in Bionic Commando. Hunger headaches, sore thumb, waiting in line or calling 14 different stores, etc all revolve around Nintendo. Those dirty bastards. Now Advance Wars 2 keeps me up at night when I know I have to wake up at 5 am. Fuckers.

I think the fact that I'm having a tough time figuring out what Nintendo's prime was is enough to edge me into Nintendo's corner. They have been a consistently strong developer.

With that being said, Sega has had plenty of shining moments. Frankly, I miss their rivarly--that was far more interesting than this spec war shit between MS and Sony.

Sega for me has had four prime game-making eras...

1985-1990: Mainly for the System 16 stuff here...Hang On, Afterburner, OutRun (the game that made me fall in love with gaming), Space Harrier, Power Drift, Rad Mobile, Golden Axe, Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, and Super Monaco GP were among the highlights. And Revenge of Shinobi was simply brilliant.

1992-1994: Primarily the Genesis stuff, this is when the system hit it's prime and Sega started to rely more on their own IP then the licensed drek that had carried the machine in the early years. The Sonic series, SOR series, Shinobi 3, World Series Baseball (RIP Blue Sky), and I guess those RPG's were some of the high water marks for the machine. And this time period also ushered in the Model 1 board with VR and VF. Also can't forget the System 32 games like Rad Mobile and the underappreciated OutRunners.

1994-1998: The Model 2/3/Saturn era might be my favourite of them all, though it's real close with the DC era. The Model 2 and 3 games were just incredible...Model 2's Daytona, Sega Rally, VF2, Fighting Vipers, Virtual On (my favourite fighter ever), Virtua Cop 1 & 2, Manx TT and Sega Touring Car, all leading into the Model 3's VF3, Super GT and Sega Rally 2. It's remarkable that the Saturn could run anything that resembled the Model 2 games, but for the most part they did so, and coupled them with the Panzer Trilogy, Decathlete and the fruity as fuck Nights. But the arcade output is what made this era, probably the strongest for one company in a single period.

1998-2002: The DC/Naomi era...the arcade output wasn't as strong as the Model 2/3 era, but they made for far better home games with the closeness of the visuals and the number of extras those ports received. Not that the arcade softs were anything to sneeze at...Virtua Tennis 1 & 2, VOOT, Crazy Taxi and F355 stand tall with any arcade game they've ever made. Couple those with the Visual Concept sports games, Sonic Adventure, JGR and the Shenmue series (Shenmue 2 being my favourite non-racing game era), and the DC probably made more noise in it's two and a half years then any system could hope to achieve.

And they've made some great stuff since going third party as well...VF4, Panzer Orta, Shinobi, Nightshade, OutRun 2. It hasn't all been misses...there's simply not as many gems as there were during their console-making days (the dropoff in their arcade output is far more alarming to me then their home stuff). But as I've said the last year or so, those gems will come.

Nintendo. They were always consistently awesome, whereas Sega was good with occasional spills into awesome.

Nintendo may becoming more and more marginalized (as a developer), but Sega's almost completely irrelevant now, and their quality has dropped unbelievably in the past 5 years or so.

Yeah, I know, in their prime. Well, to be completely honest, I still think Nintendo's got it. Sega, on the other hand, never did. IMHO, of course.

I can still remember when I would have chosen Sega as an EASY 2nd to this kind of competition, however, and I miss not being able to do that anymore.

The great thing about Nintendo is that they continue to develop killer games while Sega shells out shit like Sonic Heroes, Astro Boy for the PS2, Billy Hatcher, etc... I have to admit that I loved the Dreacast and I do love most of Overworks and Smilebits games, but aside from that and perhaps AV's games, Sega has hit the shitter.

Nintendo games are fun, but light

sega's games were fun, and hardcore. Sega was the gamers company.

Definitely Nintendo. Sega has always been rather hit or miss. Back during the Genesis era, Sega's quality really took a nose dive when Sega of America started putting out their own crap.

Too hard for me to pick one, I loved them both back when I was growing up. Nowadays they both have dropped way off in my mind, although I stil hold them in high regards.
