Between bunnies and ladies, Sony chooses the bunnies

Who would ever think Nintendo games would show more sex appeal in games than Playstation. But here we are.

"And let me say that for the record, I want to state that Night Trap will never appear on a Nintendo system. Obviously it would not pass our guidelines. This game … which promotes violence against women, simply has no place in our society."

Not a fan of censorship if that's what is happening here but the point of the game is to unlock pictures of large breasted women that look like they were drawn by a pubescent schoolboy? It's like we're back in the 50s again.
I could almost understand unlocking something like concept art, music and the likes which quite a lot of games seem to do but from the trailers unlocking those images the entire point of the game and the name of it. It's almost like the whole things only exists for the friends of the schoolboy who did the drawings.
With it being an EastAsiaSoft publication I wouldn't actually be too surprised if the entire thing from start to finish was done intentionally, including changing the characters because they know the reaction that some people would have by doing this which again likely makes it appeal even more to their target audience.

They've implemented very strict rules over sexualization of women in games released in the US. They don't want someone getting offended at a Twitch stream and inciting a Twitter mob against the PlayStation brand.

You must be smoking crack to believe Sony pressured this dev to turn the girls into bunnies! Come on man.

I don't think they got any pressure. It was more like, you either remove the girls or we won't release your game on our system.

Son the devs, instead of not releasing it, went with a more creative approach.

Have you guys even seen the game? It's stupid. A very basic meatboy platformer that looks like it's for 5 yr Olds, and you unlock images of women in undies. How stupid and desperate is this? Shitty shovelware.

I think perhaps the strangest thing of all here is that it really looks like they've been done by different artists with the one drawing the women being there on some sort of day release rather than being a proper employee.
As I said, I don't like censorship if that's what this is, but it really seems like this has somehow managed to improved things in some ways.
:messenger_beaming:
I mean, the game will still be the same cheap rip off of a well known game like their others.
If people like "Weird Asian games" there are actually loads out there on both consoles, I picked this up on Switch a few months back. It's Japanese weird rather than Chinese weird like the EatAsiaSoft games and hardly the greatest game ever but it was certainly different to other games that I've played and I've enjoyed messing around with unusual Japanese games since the Famicom days.

Sony doesn't censor games. Sometimes publishers decide to release their games on each region or platform reaching certain age rating, and self censor the game to reach that content. Sony or Nintendo only verifty that game matches that age rating.

There are many games in PS4 featuring nudity and sex scenes, even published by Sony itself. They just have to rate it properly with the related age rating on each region and to assume that some retailers may ban certain content and that some country's goverment appoval process may block the game.

Exactly.
This case is a clear case of devs choosing E instead M.

Sony didn't tell developers they couldn't make 2D games in the PSX era either, but those games wouldn't pass approval.

That's not how any of this works. Stop it man.

Yes it does. If you want to publish a game on a PlayStation platform, that game has to be submitted to Sony for approval. Back in the PSX days they called it concept approval (ask Capcom how that went with Mega Man 8 or Konami with SOTN). But they have specific criteria that have to be met. Sony isn't the only one who works this way, hell they learned it from Nintendo. All three publishers have criteria games have to meet in order to be published on their platform.

These approval rules change over time. When the first PlayStation launched, Sony would outright deny 2D games because they felt they didn't make the console competitive enough and differentiate it enough from the 16-bit era. During the PS3 era they had a rule where if the game came out on any platform before the Sony platform, you had to include some kind of exclusive be it DLC or costumes for the PS3 version.

In 2019 they updated their approval rules regarding sexualization of women. This is one of the reasons why we never got DOAX for PS4 in the US and why the DOA5 SE had a lens flare covering a bare ass (that was eventually patched out).

It's only a PR stunt.

All Sony does is to verify your game fits the age rating of each region (ESRB for USA, ZERO for Japan, PEGI for most EU counties, the ones for Germany and Australia etc) that the publisher agreed with each age rating agency (not Sony).

Depending on the case (for big game companies or all retail games in some countrie, for all games in other countries), these age rating agencies review the game to double check that the game really features what the publisher submitted. There's a trick for small companies who retail digital only games who can get that process for many agencies at the same time for 'free', saving a lot of paperwork and some dozens of thousand of dollars that it costs to get these age ratings for retail.

Obviously sex scenes -as seen in TLOU2 just to mention one example-, sexy women -remember that Korean Bayonetta clone Sony promoted on their State of Play event-, nudity and so on continues to be allowed in PS games.

It's not a lie. SCEA denied Symphony of the Night a US release, Konami had to hold Metal Gear Solid hostage in order for it to get approved.

Capcom had an even bigger fight. SCEA was outright denying Street Fighter Alpha, Mega Man 8, Mega Man X4, and the Marvel vs. fighters a US release. Capcom threatened to withhold Resident Evil, Street Fighter EX, and their other 3D games unless SCEA approved the 2D ones.

It was a huge fight and anyone remotely familiar with PlayStation history knows about it.

? There are several 2D games in PSX lol

Castlevania
Alundra
Rayman
Metal Slug
Most Fighting games
The Adventure of Little Ralph
Strider
Mega-man
Beyond the Beyond
Arc the Land
Oddworld
Legend of Mana
Breath of Fire

Just to say a few.
So just stop with the bullshit.

Why does Sony let in this shovelware, do they want the crown from the eShop or something?

On a side note. I think Sony should buy Playboy. Bogus Nudity is perfect for the brand.

See my post above. As such a huge PlayStation fan you sure don't know the history of the console much.
Imagine a console where maybe half of the library is 2D and you still try to made up story.

Imagine Sony forcing 3D on big devs but let 2D fine with indies.

That is how your story looks.

Here's an IGN article from 1997 about Mega Man 8 and X4 being denied approval:

And there weren't indies on the original PlayStation.

Totally fake news, they were released normally like hundreds of other 2D games.

Sony even published 2D games for PS1, the year one they had Arc the Lad, then they published via Psygnosis (already acquired by Sony) Discworld, co-published Mortal Kombat 3 and so on, here you have the list of games published by them on PS1: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sony_Interactive_Entertainment_video_games#PlayStation

Fake news, all these game were released both in Japan and in the west.

I should be blind but that rumored story and you "2D blocked" story are not the same.

There is nothing related to 2D there but quality of titles.

Mega Man 8 and X4 were blocked because they were 2D. Anyone who was alive during the PSX era and followed the console at the time is well aware of this.

Totally fake news, they were released normally like hundreds of other 2D games.

Look above. I posted an actual article from 1997. I'm sorry if that was before you were born and refuse to acknowledge it.

PS1 was my second console.
I have 39 years old… I had 12 years when it launched.

And no… there isn't any 2D block… in fact I was signed to a monthly magazine where there is the releases of the month with several 2D games every month.

The PS1 library is public to anybody check.

And no Mega Man 8 and X4 were launched in 2D.

The article is a total lie.

Mega Man 8 and Mega Man X4 were released in NA a month later than in Japan, super fast for the standards back then to bring Japanese games to the west (maybe because these games had very little text so localization was pretty quick):

In fact, look at the Saturn release dates.

Is this actually true though?
I'm not saying it isn't true but over the years I've seen many people quote this fact but I'm yet to read confirmation from a single in the industry who has actually seen. Everybody just sort of that it's true and over the years it's sort of become true because everybody heard it from somebody else but nobody has ever actually seen something first hand, including developers who ere working on the console at the time.
It just seems like a really strange thing as when the console launched in all three regions, it released in all three with 2D sprite based games. In America, who usually seem to get blamed-for not allowing 2D games it actually launched with three of the twelve launch games being 2D sprite based games. As somebody who still has quite a hefty PS1 collection, there was never really a point that 2D games weren't being released on the system across all three regions.
Again, I'm not suggesting that it isn't true but of all the years of hearing this I'm yet to see anything other than people saying that they heard somewhere that it was true or read something written by a third party who heard it from somewhere else but never anything from anybody who would actually know of such things. I have no idea what they forced developers to do but it's always fascinated me that it's one of these things that people seem to have accepted this fact for decades without ever being able to confirm it.

Seems like you know more than SCEA concept approval who on G4 around 2004/2005 admitted that was the policy during the PSX era, citing competitiveness as the reasons for the denials.

It is a myth created for no reason.

Games listed in the "article" released at the same time as Saturn (some even launched first in PS lol) and have little to no delay for US release (something not usual in PS1).

It was Bernie Stolar's "Five Star" policy.

It was Bernie Stolar's "Five Star" policy.
The own article says Sony Japan didn't let that "policies" lives… PS received all these 2D games just fine.

As I've said, I've seen lots of people saying that they know it to be true but I'm yet to see a single thing that's been backed up by anything that could be classed as anything more than hearsay.
I sincerely hope that you require a little more than oft repeated hearsay and rumours before you accept what you're told with truly important things in life. There is nothing there that would considered proof by any court on the planet.
Again, I'm not saying that it isn't true but I'm still yet to see any facts.

They were eventually released, after being denied. So are you saying Capcom was lying to IGN?
The story seems to be made up yeap.

BTW Bernie Stolar left (I won't say he was fired but Sony Japan was heavy disappointed with him) Sony in 1996… less than a year after he join (May 1995).

Sony admitted it on G4 around 2004/2005 saying that the policy was in place during that era to approve the games that would be the most competitive and 2D games were too similar to the previous gen in their eyes at the time.

Oh no, what game will I play now to see doodles of half naked women lifted from a middle schooler's notebook?

Really, would really love to see that because until we all see that it's still rumour and hearsay which is the exact issue that I have with the entire thing.
Again, remember, I am not saying that it isn't true. I wasn't a publisher, a developer and I've never worked in that type of business so I have no proof either way although the games that were released on the PS1, the games that I actually bought at the time and still own hints heavily that something somewhere has been lost about this claim that people often repeat.

I'll just hop in my time machine and record it on VHS for you (YouTube didn't even exist then).

I don't know what is more pathetic. Grown ass adults continuing to console war past the age of 12 (and denying Sony's regressive and very selective censorship policies) or the mental reprobates that are celebrating the censorship.
