BioShock 2 |OT| of Big Sisters, Delta Daddies, and Creepy Uncles

On the subject of who to kill:

I actually really liked the Stanley scenario, I actually spent a while in the control room with him thinking over if I should kill him or not. Ultimately he was a weak, defenceless man who's past atrocities were a result of power he no longer holds; he was no longer a threat to anybody. I spared him hoping my compassion would resonate with him and he'd change his ways, in the end it does so with Eleanor and was a nice pay-off.

Though I think the achievement's for achievements sake, it's got nothing to do with morality. I can't even comprehend why anybody would want to save Trapper Keeper Gill.

Well, she is her mother. Harder to hold a grudge against her than it is to hold one against Stanley. Heck, Stanely put her up for adoption not knowing who the kid was. And he killed dozens if not hundreds of people to cover up his acts. What's the worse Sophia did? She did kill people (indirectly) but she was going for an ideal that in her crazy mind was 'right'. I think she's certifiably insane, no reason to kill her. But I agree, I wanted to kill her :p. Were it up to me she'd be dead. But I can totally understand your foster daughter wanting to save her mother regardless if you taught her some people are worth saving that didn't know better. Which Grace would be, as well as Sophia.

Well, just focusing solely on the end, Sophia tried to kill Elenor's Big Daddy by nearly suffocating her, then tried to blow up rapture with her in it, so I don't think the fact it's her mother meant much. :lol

Meh. I just had my first lock up on the 360. I beat a big daddy to get a little sister, I did two gathers to get lots of ADAM, I put lil sis in the vent, and I was kicking big sis' ass when it locked. Now do I have to do all of that over again? :-/

best audio log in the game so far (I'm in Fontain Futuristics):
goodbye fontaine, hello atlas - a direct parallel to dialog in the first game

Subject Delta has a surprisingly interesting developing back-story, I'm extremely intrigued.

I have a feeling that this will be my "Silent Hill 2" of this decade. For me, last decade belonged to SH2 because of its unique and rich storytelling and Bioshock 2 hit many of the same notes for me as well. One thing that really struck home with me was this:

At the end, I was so desperately eager to fuck up Sofia Lamb. When the final battle was just a bunch of enemies that she summoned, I was a little indifferent to that because I was hoping we'd get to off Lamb like we got to off Fontaine. Anyway, at the end came the scene where Sofia is fucking drowning, and for whatever reason that I cannot put my finger on, it bothered me. I wanted to see that bitch burn through the whole story but when the time came I felt oddly sorry for the character and seeing her drowning got to me. And then something amazing happened-- Eleanor saved her, and the only reason being because I spared some other lives throughout the course of the story. When I realized that she'd be spared due to my actions, which had a positive effect on another character, that really blew my mind.

I was also pretty mindblown, and heartbroken, during the Little Sister sequence. Seeing what they normally see and realizing just how completely and utterly oblivious they are to their surroundings and what they're doing very much struck a chord. Then when I saw the corpses that they extract ADAM from literally having angel wings depicted on the ground where they lie went ahead and made my jaw drop. I fail to understand how anyone that rushes through the game can appreciate things like this.

This game is fucking brilliant.

I just finished this game today. I didn't like it as much as you did apparently, but I did enjoy the aspects of the game you spoiler tagged a great deal. The second sequence you talked about was hinted at in Bioshock 1, but it was awesome how they expanded on that further in the sequel. Overall, I'd rate both the original and sequel around the 8/10 to 8.5/10 range. Bioshock 1 had that intro and Fort Frolic, whereas Bioshock 2 had a far more impressive and satisfying conclusion.

Just beat it...it was interesting. The ending was better than the one in the first game, but that's not saying much. I really enjoy the atmosphere/look of Rapture but after letting it sink in I would have been fine not having this sequel. It's solid, but Lamb isn't anywhere near as interesting as Ryan, and some of Rapture's mystique is lost this time around.

Some things bugged me overall.

-I felt like Big Sister fights were tedious and annoying. They aren't as menacing as I thought they would be.

-I don't like how fragile you are in the game. You're a Big Daddy, why do splicers tear through me like I'm not wearing anything?

-With the outdoor parts I think some kind of interaction with the sea life would have been cool and possibly terrifying. A missed opportunity, IMO.

A solid game overall but I don't think I'll ever go back and play it. Make a prequel game and maybe I'll look into it.

Was the last few levels really that great?

I got a little over half way and was really enjoying it, not as much as the first though, then my cousins Xbox went to shit. I was like I'll beat it when he fix's his 360, will be a while.

The last quarter of Bioshock 2 was quite good, and this was a welcome surprise considering the last quarter of Bioshock 1 was rather mediocre, disappointing, and by-the-numbers. Bioshock 1 hit it's peak too early, whereas Bioshock 2 didn't have any levels as great as Fort Frolic but it had a much more satisfying conclusion.

I don't really expect anyone to, I was just so happy that I finally got a game that I found to have a fantastic story, great gameplay and amazing atmosphere with really truly creepy sections and wonderful emotions because those are things that rarely come together in the same package. When I play a game like this, it sets over extremely well with me. I'm not so much wrapped up in trying to compare this game with the first Bioshock, I just know how to appreciate what's there and what I felt that they did an amazing job with. Just, to me, games like this very seldom come along. I kept waiting for the game to fall apart because of all the impressions I read, but that moment never came and it just kept getting more brilliant and surprising as it went on, both from gameplay and narrative angles.

I'd much rather focus on what this game offers as a standalone work of creativity than pick it apart and worry about what things are too similar to the first one, how the formula doesn't change much, how it's basically "Bioshock 1.5" and all this other crap I'm seeing, because whether it's Bioshock 1.5 or Bioshock 0.397, I think it's a great fucking game with its own delicious merits. The Silent Hill games stopped trying altogether and Shattered Memories was a clusterfuck aside from its genius twist ending, so I have to settle in with something else. This be it.

BioShock 2 is one of those games that you start to like more the more you progress in the game you make, and even after finishing your fondness for it doesn't stop growing. I went from being disappointed and considering it an unnecessary sequel to liking it very much and planning on doing a second playthrough to get the last 4 achievements I'm missing.

Play multi-player if you want to feel like a real big daddy. And it's awesome taking down a big daddy online, too!

No mercy for Stanley! The only thought I had was if it would cause him more suffering in the long run if I spare him, forcing him to deal with the crazies. I was glad Elenore saved Sofia at the end though.

Stanley's predicament reminded me a lot of a certain choice in GTAIV, almost the same exact set up. Oddly enough, that one resonated even more with me because ultimately Niko wasn't so much of an empty shell, but I still acted the same.

I said it earlier, but remember that you're a part of the
Alpha series of Big Daddies. They can use plasmids and are a lot more agile, but if you remember correctly, they also go down a lot faster than the other types. That explains why you can do things Big Daddies from the first game couldn't, and also why you feel more fragile.

Agreed and it's only a problem at the very early stages of the game. You can max out the health bar quickly and pick up the augment that lets you carry an extra health pack early as well. I found that even a very poorly set up adam gathering sequence will only put a big dent into the health pack reserves, it won't actually kill you. Speaking of which, I wish there was an option to go through health packs automatically.

Finished today. First time in this thread, didn't want to risk any accidental spoilers.

Over all I liked it only medium. I'm an enormous fan of Bioshock 1, but my favorite part in the game was Rapture itself, so going back to it in this game just felt mundane and predictable. I don't know that there was any way they could have avoided that, but it doesn't diminish my disappointment.

The few gameplay changes they made I didn't think added much.

The adoption and gathering thing seemed like a good idea, but in the end it just ended up being kind of boring and tedious. By the time I got to Fontaine Futuristics I was sooooooo over it.

The whole idea of "being a big daddy" didn't seem to mean much other than that you could use a drill and walk around underwater and pick up the occasional slug.

I thought the Big Sisters were a great addition though, a really great idea, and they were fun to fight.

Pacing was a little uneven, it really started to sag in the middle. The last act of the story though was great, with a much more satisfying ending. I also agree with some of the posts about feeling disappointed with the lack of a final fight with Lamb, like with Fontaine in the first game. Which is sort of funny since everyone complained about that the first time around (though I didn't mind it). Maybe because this time she's clearly the enemy right from the beginning, where as in the first game the first half is Ryan, and then it switches to Fontaine.

Fuck this post is long, I wonder if anyone will read it.

Anyway I wanted to also add that my girlfriend sometimes sits down and watches me play games for 5 minutes or so before she gets bored and leaves. It's usually like some military FPS or something. But this time she came in and sees a little sister walking around with her Big Daddy (and calling him Mr Bubbles in her creepy voice) in this run down flooded Art Deco setting while I'm shooting fire from hands at these freaks jumping around with masks and she became immediately enthralled. She was like oh my god... what is this place what is happening and started asking me all these questions. I had to pause the game and explain the whole fiction to her, and she's like hand me the instruction book I wanna know more! :lol

It reminded me of me 2 and a half years ago when I first stepped in to Rapture. :(

I still don't really buy this...
considering you die just as fast, if not moreso, than Jack from the first game. The Alpha series are noticably weaker than the normal Daddies, but they are still noticably tougher than any splicer. You on the other hand are a gigantic wimp, I would have loved them to just make your life bar way longer and only be able to carry 1-2 medkits, and to compensate either make them very infrequent/very expensive. Would've been a fairly easy way to make you feel more like a big daddy.

Just started playing this so I haven't read much of the thread in fear of spoilers.

Seems like they've really upped the shooter part and... well, Bioshock was already a fairly clumsy FPS. The whole thing- changing ammo types, switching between powers, laying down traps... It seems like the shooting should be much slower paced. Instead you're constantly being bum rushed and the clunkiness (especially in the way that there is often a disconnect between when you hit the mouse button and when the plasmid actually fires) turns it into a bit of a mess-- especially given the "bullet sponge" effect going on with the enemies and the PC controls being a bit of a mess. Using the function keys to select plasmids is such a boner, a Crysis-style selecto-wheel would have been much nicer.

And as for gathering Adam... First I've got to kill a Big Daddy, then I've got to wander around and find a body, then I've got to hold off waves of baddies, then I've got to find another body and do that over again, then I've got to find a vent, THEN I might have to fight a Big Sister!
You know what I liked? When it was kill a big daddy -> get adam

I was having fun with multiplayer.....until tonight. Played for 2 hours and had at least 5 freezes.

I'm also finding it much more frustrating at level 29. It feels like I hit a wall. Can't put a good streak together and the leveling is so much slower. Not sure if I'll be able to make it to 40.

I'm definitely taking a break for now though. Going back to finish up my hard run.

I just hit level 31 but haven't experienced any wall like you. What are your weapons/plasmids/tonics? From level 1 to 31 I had no problem with dealing with a bunch of splicers using Machine Gun and Winter Blast with Shotgun and Insect Swarm as my secondary. Sadly my Machine Gun is too weak for the higher ranks so I'm switching to the Nail Gun but I hate that fucking wind up.

Big Daddies are godly online.

Sure, it seems tedious, but it is optional. You can just kill big daddy -> rescue or harvest. I got the "obtain 600 Adam" achievement halfway through my playthough, so there's plenty of it. As for the Big Sister, you fight her when you've dealt with every little sister in a level.

Yeah, considering all the other online achievements are obtained by doing something for the first time (take down a BD, become a BD, win a match, complete a trial, etc.) it's kind of a drag that you need to reach rank 40 to get that achievement.

While Fontain Futuristics is sinking, you see Eleanor through a window with Lamb. Lamb will be drowning. If you didn't kill at every opportunity, Eleanor will have learned from you and save her from drowning. Otherwise, Lamb dies.

I only killed Gil. Does this matter? I think Lamb died. Would be interessting to know what happens with her, when she survives.

I'm gonna play through it again and murder and harvest everyone.

If you harvest all the little sisters, do you end up being more powerful? Because saving them starts having a pretty big bonus effect with the gifts and such.

I've not tried but I would imagine you end up with more Adam but lacking those gift plasmids, each time I've completed the game though (rescuing the sisters) I've had a mega surplus of Adam so it really depends on what you mean by being more powerful.

How long did it take you to reach rank 40?

Around 20 hours. It's very easy, particularly if you take advantage of some of the easy trials that come around. I didn't even have to change my style to get many of the trials, and some of them give you huuuuge bonuses (250 adam and 500 adam. Interestingly, many of the 500 adam trials are easiest of all)!

The Big Daddy is way over powered right now. As him, I can just run people constantly and if you have others guarding you or a turret there near you... you can forget it. He should be on a timer or something or slowly run out of breath or something.

Strange, I was thinking he is a bit too weak. I have taken down numerous big daddies by myself. It's insanely easy. One, put on Big Game Hunter tonic (bonus damage to Big Daddies). Two, use houdini to sneak up behind him (extremely simple). Three, lay into him with a nail gun for a few seconds. Even if he notices the damage fairly quickly, I usually take off 25-50% health in one single go. Usually in every round I participate in, the Big Daddy is dead within 30 seconds to a minute of the round. If you have a team working together to focus on it? Fuggedaboutit. Thing goes down in 10 seconds or less.

Yeah, it's super fun. Some people don't like when I use the Houdini Plasmid, however! An example of a message I received just this morning after destroying everyone in a round:

I felt it was nothing alike: Dimitri did nothing but try to kill you and your loved ones, Stan committed some terrible acts but ultimately they lead to you having a loving little sister and the downfall of Lamb. Dimitri was a stone cold killer; Stan was a pawn of Raptures leaders; he had to commit mass murder or he'd become a test subject and Ryan would get another lackey to do the job, likewise he had to do something about Eleanor.

Albeit due to his greed Stanley was a man who constantly was in the wrong place at the wrong time from his perspective; but if it were a more noble man in his position then rapture would of Fallen to lamb, Eleanor would truly be a slave, and the little sisters would be lost to their families.

My first impressions of Multiplayer on 360 aren't good. Out of maybe 6 games, I've had 5 drops and it's taking forever to find a game in general.

What mode are most people playing? I'm not really having success with any of them

I tried it first time this morning, and it was HORRIBLE. Too more than 5 mins to get the first match. According to the lobby I was matched up with other level 1 dudes, but in the game, I was fighting level 10+s. Of course, I struggled with my pathetic initial setup. My team managed to win, and it showed me that I leveled up to 2. Except, the lobby was closed and then I was thrown back to level 1. I still have the achievement for winning the match except my record is clean with all zeros! I wasn't expecting MW2, but pretty disappointed by the all around bad experience. I'm not going back until I hear they fixed the whole thing next time.

Grabbed the game this weekend.

Shocked that the game doesn't have an auto-save feature for checkpoints. I learned out the hard way that it autosaves only between chapters by finishing a chapter but not moving to the next one but just switching the console off, so that I could return for some daddy hunting. Of course, when I came back it sent me to the beginning of the chapter. Quite unusal in this day and age, let alone for games with such budget.

Just beat it. The game was pretty average, like most people have been saying it is lacking something that I cannot put my finger on. I am not so sure that the level design was up to snuff as the first game or perhaps I have just gotten used to the world of Rapture. The final area/sequence that lead up to the ending was amazing though.

I wish though when you possessed the Little Sister that you could see what the Big Daddy looked like through her eyes. Perhaps he just looked the same as the real world like the posters and dolls on the ground had shown. I liked the whole scene though, it was very silent hill-like.

I would definitely like to see a prequel to Bioshock 1 where Rapture is at the zenith of its era before things go downhill. Not sure how they would pull it off though.

I've been switching it up for the most part but my main staple is Insect Swarm and machine gun, with grenade launcher and telekinesis as secondary. It worked great for me up until now but its looking like I might have to change soon.

I've noticed a lot of people using Incinerate and a grenade launcher at 35+. Might have to try that out.

And I played some more today after my horrible night and it was much better. Don't know if I was off or what. Just hope I wont run into something like that again til 40ish lol.
